DOTA 2 v7.00: New Journey (Test Client Dec 11, Main Client Dec 12)

ok so i'm thinking is omni even more broken now? if you GA then repel, there's literally nothing you can do because repel is undispellable now?
I'm thinking the whole thing is a crap shoot for now ... Every hero just got a -20 agi/str/intell nerf

If you play DOTA or have played DOTA this new patch is apparently a doozie (hashtag gamechanger) that is both absolutely titanic in size and revolutionary in it's changes. It has been almost 6 months that we have been stuck on 6.88 with minor balances. Bigger changes have been intentionally delayed for the sake of TI6 and so that everything will drop with the introduction of the new Monkey King hero. Developer IceFrog has not released a new hero in a long time and the community is quite hungry for new playstyles and progression. Other games like LoL, HotS, and Overwatch seem to have regular hero releases.

Similar games tend to just release heroes with similar playstyles that bring nothing new to the table, which isn't the case with Dota, iirc.

Now, if I only played dota this sounds like a wonderful thing. :p

Honestly I don't feel the talents have pigeon-holed heroes into specific roles any more than they were before. Most of them seem to either slightly help with existing roles OR cover a weakness such as low mana pool etc that could help with playing an alternate build/role at will. Obviously some of the ability changing ones are insanely impactful, but most are just minor shifts in play style. I like them so far.

There is less gold on the map due to the lower bounty kills and longer respawn time for jungle camps. So you cannot get items as fast as it used to. Talents make up for this by giving free "items" out of a limited pool ("choose between these two talents") in favor of exp instead of gold. So to me, it is definitely less flexibility since you have limited choice for items.

Plus most talents are enforcing existing roles, for instance big playmakers get shorter respawn time, carry get lifesteal, etc. It is only for few heroes such as Lich that you get to choose between more offensive (carry) or more defensive (support) playstyles.

i only played a bot match so far, but the map redesign is pretty neat. Bounty runes on a separate timer, more 'balanced' creep camps, Roshan finally in the middle of the map ...

From a mechanics standpoint, i like the fact that they made even less items an 'orb effect' ... that's such a legacy WC3 engine thing, it has no place in Dota imho...

New HUD looks cool, much less wasted space than before. How does it work with the custom HUDs that you can/could buy?

It's nice to see that dota is starting to move further beyond the WC3 engine limitations.

I'm still very torn on the talent system. I like that they are the replacement for the stat upgrades we used to have, but some talents are straight up better than others by a loooong shot. Also I agree with some here that they force some roles, but it's hard to say just now.

All the HUD skins have been remapped to fit the UI, here's a album if you want to see for yourself. http://imgur.com/a/NAhhr

a lot of what made the skins unique is gone now, which sucks, but overall I like the new UI a lot because of how much screenestate you have now.

Ah, yeah, the new HUD skins seem kinda tame but the new UI should still make it superior to the old one so that it's not a big loss. The old one seemed like such a waste of the screen.

I like this mockup of the HUD from Reddit. A lot easier to read and turns the HUD into basically a cleaned up version of the old HUD.

Anuxi's mockup is very nice as well

GAF lied to me, they said there would be a meltdown, but it is mostly positive, hopeful and civil here.

The biggest issue I've seen this patch is with the HUD. People seem to like the content, otherwise.

What I find kind of interesting about Monkey King is he's a very "old" style hero, with fairly simple, straight forward abilities. There was some fears that new heroes for Dota 2 would be crazy and do crazy things and be super complicated (Arc Warden, Oracle or Earth Spirit for example), but Monkey King isn't really out of the ordinary for an Agility Carry.

Having played this back when it was still called DotA All-Stars in WC3, the 2 stat point system going away is so weird. I can't remember a more fundamental gameplay change than that.

Played my last game of normal Dota last night :\ I think the stat system adds more than we gain by taking it away, regardless of talents.

Also - I know that Icefrog made a lot of changes, but a lot of heroes I expected changes on were left untouched, while others that were already bad were balanced to be worse. No changes for Nyx/Ogre, who were top tier supports in this major? Nothing for NS, who hasn't been seen in awhile? Adding a scepter to PL that *makes more illusions* when illusions now have a gold and exp bounty? Nerfing Necro so that his main role is pretty much gone?

Lastly. All these fucking changes and they couldn't be assed to put a Christmas hat on Rosh after 3 years of no holiday events?

Hey guys I've really been curious of these games like Dota, LoL etc. What is it about the game that you like? Also if I was going to get into it would I need a good gaming PC? What's going to be the cost of entry to me? I've feel like im being left behind lol.

This was a very minor balance patch if you ignore the talents. I expect either a big balance patch once the dust settles or a lot of minor changes along the way.

That's because icefrog has been slowing balancing things towards that.

I mean, when HoN came out "no orbs" was one of its selling point. "The game isn't limited by WC3 engine anymore".
A few patches later and orbs became a thing again because back then they were fucking broken.

Not every talent tree are well balanced, but I like what that new system bring to that table. Thought more could have been done to allow more character to be played in a completely different way/role ( like Lich or even Gyro tree kind of does ), but it's not like we can't expect to see some hero rebalance with their tree in the next patch(s).

The idea that we will need to relearn many things from runes, jungle, to ward spot is kind of overwhelming, but a good kind of overwhelming.

The first image you quoted is super easy to read, but it looks so much like League of Legends. I'm not sure if that's what the design philosophy was, but man, the resemblance is striking.

Orbs/UAMs were definitely a balance thing. Couldn't you determine what was and wasn't orb effects in WC3 (from a map development standpoint)? MoM + Deso + Drow Frost Arrows would be just a smidge OP.

Still don't understand why Caustic Finale still needs to be a UAM though. It makes the least sense out of any of them. I don't think it would be OP combined with any other UAMs in the game.

Cool. Maybe I can get away using my laptop. Also is the game addictive? Why does it attract so many millions of users. Just need to know what value I'll get before investing my time into it.

Some problems with it:

1 - leveling up
2 - talent tree
3 - you can easily see +stats but not +armor? +armor (and +damage) is way more important than +stats, especially with the new ancient reducing base armor. I don't see any use for +stats other than some stats stealing heroes which pretty much never will make you hit 1 base stat.
4 - KDA is useless, knowing yours change nothing. The ones that matter are in the scoreboard anyway (to see streaks or something like that)
5 - CS is useless.

4 and 5 are important for streaming and spectators. CS also isn't useless.

If you're into competitive PvP with basically unlimited skill and knowledge cap then yeah, it's a game that can just be the only game you play. I'm sure I'm not even close to the only person around here with 2500+ hours clocked.

just noticed the skillnames on Slardar's ult and and bash is changed now

cool

the game is kinda addicting to me. I don't exclusively play dota, but I usually play X game and then head back to dota, for so to play y game and back to dota again etc etc.

keep in mind the skill ceiling is pretty steep, but the gameplay is really rewarding if you put your time into learning the game ^.^

My problem with talents is less about pigeon holing and more that they feel like an unneded additional axis to care about "+10% to X" and "+18 for Y". Skills, items and talents feels like it might be a bit...messy

I'll reserve final judgement till I play with them though

Dota is already so complex that adding stuff like this while alleviating some management thanks to the backpack kind of evens it out imo.

I like both huds, but a mix of both would be nice. The info (stats to the left/under of the portrait, kda under the talent tree), but the health/mp of the first mockup.

I don't care for either of those mockup HUDs. Clutter reduction was the entire point; both mockups only add more junk that you really don't need to see at all times.

I would, however, like an option to always have friendly HP and mana on below their portrait.

A lot of good HUD skins died so that we might have the UI I always said we needed to have.

RIP Valor HUD, which is 100% straight trash now.

RIP Scions of the Sky HUD, which loses Sky + Venge, which was the whole point of the skin.

Also, RIP to all the skins that don't properly cover the edges of the minimap.

I look forward to new HUD skins designed specifically for this HUD, but I'm very content with how clean the default one is and I don't expect I'll be equipping anything but the default for a good long while.

I didn't notice this, but I like these better. I felt like his previous skill names were pretty lame. Slithereen Crush was always that though.

I actually liked that his skills were just verbs. I kinda wish they just changed it to Crush and had him be unique in a dumb way.

I'd take the HP/MP bars from the 2nd and mix it with the rest of the first picture. As it is, my only real complaint is that it seems a tad small.
