Dragon Age: Origins |OT| Letting The Fade fade out of memory

It's really a shame that Shale is DLC that is almost certain to be sold later on. The guy is a core part of the experience, and as a character with his own abilities, backstory, arc, voice acting and dialogue with other characters, he is hardly your typical DLC.

Shale's the best character in the game in my view, other than perhaps Alistair, and EA and Bioware really need to just add him in the game to future copies rather than forcing people to pay. He's free now but will very likely be sold later on - and free or not, how many people have actually bothered to download and install Stone Prisoner, particularly with all the DLC clusterfuckery?
Who actually buys used copies of PC games, though? I've gotten one - Far Cry 2 off Goozex - in god knows how long. I really can't remember anything before that. I also don't believe it'll be sold later, since it is meant to push new sales vs used/piracy.

That said, you're right about installing it, and it's something I never thought of. I'm not so sure a casual user would install it, which is disappointing. Being able to redeem codes in game would've been a huge step up.

What makes you think they won't keep packing him in with new copies? Personally I think it's to get people accustomed to the idea of downloading content for the game.

I bought this yesterday :D

I started a human mage. Game is great so far, I didn't want to stop playing. It's a little difficult to see how your dialog choices will effect the plot at this point.
I want to help Jowan and Lily, but I talked to the first enchanter after I got their quest and told him what was up. The way he talked before it seemed like he was more lax and would be supportive. Instead he wanted me to turn them in. I chose every dialog option I could to deny it, but they sort of force you into agreeing with him to set the two up. Hopefully you don't have to, and if you do I think I might load an old save.

As far as abilities and the like go, is it impossible to respec in this game? I chose the lightning spell, the frost spell, and the weakness spell so far, but I'm not really sure what path I want to go down at this point because I don't really know the system well. Do these spells not matter much compared to the specializations?

I don't think you would even be able to buy the DLC without having a fresh CD key to use with your Bioware Social Network account.

No respec in vanilla. There's a mod underway to patch it in, check the past couple of pages for a link.

I hope they do pack him in, but if it's mostly to push new sales and make it look like a temporary promotional offer, they could very well decide to sell it later on. It wouldn't be the first DLC that was free upon the game's release only to be sold later, though it would be a pretty egregious thing to do with this particular piece of content. Hopefully they don't go that route.

Shale is so glaringly a part of the original game that it seems clear that they purposefully took him out, so that makes me cynical.

It's for sale on 360, at a pretty steep 1200 points. I assumed it was the same on PC.

Might sound as a stupid question, but where can one get ahold of the wallpapers and OST from the Digital Deluxe Edition? Can't find anything under My Media on Steam. Thanks in advance.

Oh, there they are. Thanks!

Is there a "proper" way of accessing these files? :p I mean, a non-cheap-feeling way without having you navigate your folders or linking to it yourself?

No right click on the games list?

I understand PC look best but how far off really is the PS3 and 360 versions? Does the PS3 version look that much better or run that much more smoothly than the 360 version?

Whats the official GAF recommendation for this game? I have a good pc however I don't tend to feel like sitting in a stiff chair for hours in a basement on end. I much prefer the 58 Plasma with a Controller in hand upstairs, but I do not wan't to spend more and get crappy performance etc..

this isnt a arugment to start a flame war either. Im just looking for someone who has played on all three to let me know.

I have both the xbox360 and PC version.

I can say that if you have a good pc, go for that version.
It's not that the game is bad on a console, it's just that it is significantly worse than on a computer. I'm not even referring to graphics. Gameplay wise, a lot of stuff is better on the pc.

True. The game seems like it was designed to play like Neverwinter Nights and Baulder's Gate then Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic (some might have been thinking this. I know I was to a degree). From what I can gather I figure you could get away with mico-managing your party on the PC since you can pause and issue commands either. Having played enough Neverewinter Nights 1 and 2 I can imagine that Dragon Age on the PC plays the exact same way. For there I didn't really need to bother with the AI setup for the most when I played though, at least some of the more detailed settings.

For the console version I'm finding I HAVE to make use of the tactics system or I'm screwed for the most part. Having a healing tactic setup I'm finding is a must unless I want to do all the healing myself and that can be a problem if I'm attacked as a Mage. Glad enough drop off of enemies (make sense they'd have them) and they aren't that expensive.

Not sure but was Bioware ever clear that was the difference in how they designed the game? It looks like they took the PC game and adapted controls similar to ME and KOTOR but in the end it is still a PC game so things seem limited on the console. If anything I think they should have took the entire control setup from KOTOR for the console versions.

The game creates multiple auto-save slots for you. Just go back to one of those. Not the greatest solution, but better than quiting or restarting.
Why can I only see 1 then when I try to load the game? 360 version

Only see one on the 360 version as well. Figure that was all I was going to get and had to do extra saves myself.

Though I do wonder if the auto-saves are based on the character. You can switch characters when you turn on the game. Anyone know if each character has it's own set of saves under it (why else let you switch characters I'm thinking instead of having either be save based) or are all the saves listed no matter which character you are on?

I don't think so, but IMHO it's pretty obvious that the game was made with PC in mind for the first few years. Remember how long it has been in development.

Crap, I missed it then. I'm playing an elf mage and am in Redcliffe already. I guess I'll try to go back and get her. Hope it is still possible...

Just finished it, it was a interesting idea, but it dragged on a bit to long. Should have had less areas.
Yeah, and I wish that they'd encouraged usage of all three forms in combat (and not just to use their nukes). That whole segment was extremely easy, even on hard. And the look of the fade reminds me of Xen.

The Mage Tower the second time you go back, not part of the origin story.

So can you drop mods right in existing campaigns?
Yes. Just follow the instructions, and if you load up in camp, zone out and back in to see the chest.

Why is storage needed when you get 120 slots in the inventory?
I installed it when I had 70 slots. I shove long-term items in there like equipment I can't use yet since it prevents me from accidentally selling/destroying/pooing on it.

Man, I'm REALLY out of the loop when it comes to gaming these days.. I had no idea this game was already out.

Watching the IGN video review I see the battle systems are quite different between the console and PC versions.. anyone who has tried both that can give an opinion on which they like best? I can say that I'm a big fan of the combat in KOTOR, basically I like when there's some micro-management and tactics but still a decent "flow" to it. IGN makes it sound like the console versions are basically hack-and-slash?

I also did one of those tests to see if my PC could run it, and it seems it lands somewhere right between the minimum and recommended requirements. I'm guessing I won't be able to run it on the maximum settings, will the graphics still be significantly better on PC?

The combat isn't that different between console and PC. The difference is that on PC it's easier to see what everyone is doing (giving you more tactical awareness) since you can scroll back to a top-down perspective. And you'll have a far easier time issuing orders for everyone with a mouse and keyboard.

And to your second question, yes. Even if you're just on-par with the consoles it'll give you the opportunity to sacrifice stuff in the areas you don't care about, making it run better or run worse. You'll also have the benefit of mods on the PC.

Shit man, I found out yesterday that you could press tab and see all those tiny clickable items. I went over all the places I explored and cleaned out everything I could.

However, some places are now sealed/destroyed so I probably missed those forever. Oh well.

I finish recruiting all four factions/races whatever you want to call it and about 50 hours in.

Thanks, I think I'll pick up the PC version.

to those that have completed the game already, when is the point of no return?

ive finished the dalish, redcliffe and mage storylines so I just have the dwarves to do but I really want to get all the side quests out of the way. it seems like a lot of them, the chanter's board n all that are completed by collecting stuff along the way and some others arent accesible to me since I dont have all the zones in denerim unlocked

Point of no return is
going to Redcliffe after the Landsmeet
you have no other option after that than to progress the main plot.

So...all of a sudden I can no longer play the game. Played it all last night, got housed by the dude in the courtyard at Redcliffe Castle and went to bed. Just got home, fired up the game...and get a product activation pop up.

Sign in with my EA account...could not activate using the EA account I provided. Mother fucker.

I bought it last night for my PC. On High settings at 1280x768 It ran a solid 60 FPS in the dwarven city. but when I exited the caves and went outside for the first time the framerate TANKED ):. To be expected I guess but still disappointing to have it running superbly for the first hour or so, and then take a dump.

Is there any known performance tweaks? or somehow to change specific settings, rather then the general High/Medium/Low global settings?

I am having a ton of fun with it so far. :)

That's part of the mini-boss fight. Future revenants will steal your credit card info and use it to buy materials for making meth, and send any porn you have on your drive to your parents' e-mail address.

Finished it today
level 17 Mage
31.44 hours

ran through the last 4 hours of the game(no side quests, skipping some conversations too)

Last portion of the game is a pain in the ass, and the ending is weak(for such an epic game it should have been a 30 min cut scene)

Amazing game overall

So I'm having troubling running it on low on my laptop. Using it on my laptop is only temporary but it passed the canyourunit test by about a fourth so I assumed I could run it at a decent frame rate. I'm getting this weird audio feed back and its running at like 15-20 fps. Sometimes it hits single frames. Any suggestions?

I'm running a
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83GHz
2GB ram
GeForce 8600M GT
Vista

I've already tried a reinstall and graphic drivers update which didn't help.

God, I love all the lore!

The message boards, message "sacks", message "trunks" and "subtly slipped across the counter" messages may not have any spoken dialogue, but reminded me that you don't need a line spoken to be fantastic.

Feels like a return to this Bioware:

I have a similar setup on my laptop. Only thing I was able to do was lower settings to bare minimum, but it was still sluggish. I'm sticking to playing it on my desktop for now.
