Speaking of Kai, Kyle Hebert, Chris Sabat, and a few other voice actors have confirmed they're working on dubbing the Majin Boo story arch. Shocking, I know.

What was Toriyama thinking when he came up with that Gohan gets mad bullshit?

He wanted a way to differentiate Gohan from Goku. Gohan was naturally, probably due to upbringing and Chi-Chi, a calm child. So the idea that his power only came out with anger is not a bad one, especially as that's the entire basis of SSJ.

Is there a reason why so many people hate kai?

Can't speak for anyone else, but it's not so much that I hate it as that I'm just not that interested in it. The idea of a streamlined version of the show to better match the comic's pacing is certainly appealing, and if they'd actually done some new animation to properly link the edits instead of just redrawing bits here and there and leaving obvious cuts elsewhere I'dve probably been down, but as things stand I'm happy to stick with the original show.

Anyways, I was around 6-8 when I first watched DBZ and I remember always being scared that my parents wouldn't approve of it being violent so I always changed the channel when they came into my room. I had about the same tension you would have watching porn with somebody walking around outside of your room.

Kind of stupid that Gohan was already stronger than Raditz era Goku even though he only did shit in the woods like Goku did in Dragonball and received a couple of months of Piccolo training. Everyone witnessed Goku's long training as a kid, and then Gohan just shits on it.

Yeah it's funny how people complain Buu Saga Goten and Trunks were already Super Saiyans, yet the series always did stuff like that.

Dragonball operates under the theory of Lamarckian inheritance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamarckism

So why was Goku sent to destroy Earth in the first place?

There was no real purpose, it was kind of a systematic thing. Saiyans would depopulate planets so that Freeza could sell them. The Saiyans would send their weakest children to the weakest planets as babies, and when they arrived they would eventually grow older and strong enough to kill everyone on the planet. This was both for efficiency reasons and because the even the weakest children were seen as disgraceful and expendable.

Goku happened to get sent to Earth.

So are the orange bricks the best way to get all of the series in English? I loved the Blu-rays but they stopped making those for some dumb reason. The Dragon Boxes are either never going to be made again or $100 for one set of them. Which is crazy as you can't find all of them. I guess the bricks are my best chances huh? They still make those lol.

Also the movie blurays are great. I've been slowly collecting those and watching them like a series. It's been a fun experiment. I've only seen the first 4-5 or so. Great picture for how old they are.

The dragon boxes are the absolute best way to get the series, but since they're out of print the orange bricks are your only legal option. If you don't care too much about visual quality, it's not that bad. If you like the dub music, it's the only set that has it.

There's also the old 3-4 episode DVDs with the dub music. That's how I collected the series.

I dunno, it wasn't that they were super strong that bugged me, it was more that every Super Sayian transformation beforehand was a big deal, in response to some super emotional event. But Goten and Trunks transformations was just so... casual.

Imagine, for example, if Kid Trunks went Super Sayian for the first time after seeing Buu regenerate from his dad's final sacrifice? That would have been some awesome shit.

I have been watching the series with the Japanese music mostly. It feels like it fits the best. I actually haven't watched the series with the dub music since it aired on toonami. I don't remember it that well. But I didn't hate it. I just hate that I never grabbed the dragon boxes when they came out. The quality of the bricks never bothered me but I still like picture quality if there is another option. Boo. I miss the Blu rays.

Meh, if anything the SSJ legend was already nerfed in the Cell arc, so I didnt mind seeing Trunks and Goten getting them.

The "dumb reason" is that they weren't selling. Employees have been pretty candid on/with the ANN Podcast about that. They were doing all sort of expensive restoration and remastering of the shows original art, and the sales just weren't there to justify the cost of continuing.

Oh. Well that sucks. DVDs look like ass now. It was nice to get a high def version of the series. I don't understand why they weren't selling.

I imagine the majority of people that want to own the show had gotten a complete set somewhere between the singles, the orange bricks, the Dragon Boxes and Z Kai. I doubt many were interested in double dipping so there just wasn't much market left for them.

Future Trunks is the best character in the series, oddly enough chibi Trunks in the worst

Future Trunks and Vegeta had good chemistry to each other, and their arc is good. Seeing Vegeta go from not giving a shit about his son, to the point where Trunks literally tried to beat the shit out of him, to seeing Vegeta go ape shit over his son was great stuff. The Anroid & Cell arc is also the time where we see Goku and Gohan's relationship develop, as it wasn't really focused much in previous arcs due to Goku being MIA. So kudos to the Cell arc in that aspect.

I think they didn't sell because of over saturation. I don't think the last of the orange bricks came out and suddenly the more superior dragon boxes came out. Then as soon as the dragon boxes finish up, here come the blu rays. Everybody that wanted to buy the series had already bought it for the most part. They really should have waited a few years before pushing the blu rays out.

You're also forgetting that Funimation was in the midst of releasing Kai at the time.

Gee, I wonder why? They re-released the show in several forms, in several formats, almost concurrently. They had the Orange Bricks, the Dragon Box, Kai on DVD & Blu-ray, and the Level remaster on Blu-ray all releasing nearly at the same time. You can only sell a show so many times before everyone owns it.

I still regret not getting the Dragon Boxes or even following the fact that they were coming out in the US. Orange Bricks it is then. Boo. At least they are pretty cheap.

Edit: hmm. They do have the dragon boxes on amazon. Are they even worth how much they are asking for them? $130 for the first box. Holy shit. $400 for the second box.

So why is the orange version worse then the dragon box version?

And the pricing for the dragon boxes are so inconsistent.

Box 1 $130

Box 2 $600

Box 3 $40

They're out of print. 1 and 2 are by far the most expensive, but they'll all be in that range soon, unless FUNimation reprints them.

Yup. Totally forgot about that. Funimation saw that all of these were selling well, so why not add super remastered blu rays to all of that?! They'll buy it no matter what! Lol, Funimation.
I snooped up all the Dragon Box's the instant they came out, best decision I ever made.

Yeah, it's a great feeling. I have the definitive version of a series I love at my fingertips whenever I want. This thread makes me want to rewatch some of it.

First box set is always the most in demand. Companies expect a drop off between volumes and it appears Funimation underestimated interest for the second set.

I'm watching DBZ 'season 1' online, but the voices don't seem to be the same as I remember them. Vegeta has his adult voice and not the voice of the popular video 'it's over 9000'. What's the difference and is there any place I can watch the old voices?

Originally, the dub that we got in North America was outsourced to Ocean Studios and distributed by Pioneer. Eventually Funimation gathered their own cast and started using them when Goku got to Namek (in the US broadcast run). With newer DVD releases Funimation eventually went back and redubbed the first 50 or so episodes that the Ocean cast had dubbed. That's what you're watching now.

You'd have to collect the old Pioneer singles to watch those Ocean dub episodes, though there are some clips on youtube. Outside of the US the Ocean cast actually dubbed the entire series but Funimation has the distribution rights in North America and some other parts of the world, so that's why there were never any DVDs with that cast after the original 50 episode run.

Fun fact: Sean Schemmel originally auditioned for the role of Captain Ginyu because he thought Ginyu looked cool, and when he got given Goku's role assumed that Goku was some side character.

The Orange Box sets have incredibly high contrasting colors and are very oversaturated. The images were run through a filter that blurred them in order to eliminate the noise on the film, and the frames were faded together to make the film look more fluid in motion, but that just ended up making frames bleed in to one-another during fast moving action sequences (read: all action sequences). Some of the more prevalent examples are Nappa looking like he's having a seizure and foaming from the mouth and Super Saiyan Goku with a melted face, but it's not difficult to find many examples. The blurring and color saturation removes most of the visible details, like the wrinkles on Piccolo's arms or any cuts or scrapes the characters have.

The DragonBoxes are so inconsistently priced because some of them sold better than others. More people bought the first box than the second, so the price of the second is higher.

Such a shame FUNimation cancelled the Remasters on bluray. :(

Speaking of Raditz... he's like the forgotten family member huh?

It is kind of funny that Goku was down with forgiving Buu, Vegeta, Tienshinhan and Piccolo, but never even gave a second thought to his biological brother.

The Ocean Dub exists for the whole series, but I don't know anywhere you could buy it. You would want to specifically look for the words "Ocean Dub" if you want the original voices. I actually prefer the Ocean Dub voices mostly because I was used to the most recognizable ones, Vegeta and Piccolo and I found the Funi voices of those two grating.

He actually never really wanted to "forgive" any of them. If you rewatch Goku's reason for leaving them all alive, it's not to rehabilitate any of them, it's so they can get stronger to fight him again. Piccolo is the first real example of that, where he specifically lets him live so he can come back to fight again. He flat out says this about Vegeta to keep Krillin from killing him, too. Buu is another example, but that was also unique because God owed him a favor.

He didn't try for Freeza because by the time he was SSJ, it was clear Freeza was at his limit. Presumably this is the same for Cell too. Or maybe Cell wasn't a "real" opponent since he was made up of stolen abilities. As for Raditz...probably just Toriyama not remembering details as usual. Or maybe Raditz kidnapping his son was too much of a crime to forgive.

Goku's character is unique that way: he's the psychopathic blood knight that constantly seeks out stronger enemies to the point where it's self-destructive. He also just happens to be a nice guy as well. He also has a bit of a child-like naivety about how inherently good people are (they're not).

Goku was about to forgive Raditz when he begged for forgiveness (when Goku grabbed his tail) and then Goku let go of his tail. Raditz betrayed him and wanted to kill everyone including him. That's what made him want to kill Raditz. Same with Frieza really, he flew away from Frieza then he betrayed Goku by firing at him, which led to Goku shooting a beam back and supposedly kill him.

He didn't have a chance to let Cell live. He died because Cell was going to blow himself and Earth up. Besides, he was already beaten by Gohan. So Gohan would have been the challenge Goku would seek.

That's a good point; Raditz and Freeza were completely dishonorable combatants. Goku is big on Bushido rules and "fair" combat.
