So I know I'm late but I just saw the news about the Blu-rays. How in the hell am I ever going to get to watch this show in a nice quality with the music I like?! At this point I'm tempted to just rip my Dragon Box sets, rip the audio from the old three episode a disk DVD's, and make my own Frankenstein monster.

Fat Buu doesn't really work- it's pretty much totally contrary to his character- but the rest of those are really nice.

Finally finished watching the second Dragon Box last night (only 207 episodes to go!), haven't seen most of this stuff in 11 odd years, and never before in Japanese. Outside of a few bits of fluff like the Chichi and Bulma cutaways (especially Bulma; holy shit woman, Gohan's just had his neck snapped and you're whinging about having to sit around for a while) and some unnecessary flashbacks, I've actually kinda liked the pacing of the show up to this point. The Japanese music and sfx make the show feel more about building tension in the staredowns and then releasing in the moments of fighting and for the most part it works.
Then I had a quick look at the episode guide in the booklet for the third box and saw that the fight with Freeza's final form was going to take twenty more episodes. Yeah.

They're on hold at the moment. Only 2 volumes out.
It's too bad. As soon as I realized they were going out of print, I picked them all up.
The video quality of the blu rays is fantastic. I sincerely hope they discontinued them because the higher ups at Toei are planning a Japanese remaster and don't want a FUNimation remaster in the wild.

Wow that's lame. Of what is released though, would those be the best version?
Toriyama has confirmed in interviews before that he really doesn't plan much, if anything, out. You'll notice that the idea of a super saiyan wasn't even mentioned until.. I think it was the ginyu arc?
Toriyama probably conceived of super saiyan as a plot device to use during the upcoming frieza battle, to make frieza's power so great that only a basically mythological being of legend could defeat him.
Then there's hte fact that characters completely disappear at ranodm points for seemingly no reason at all. Launch is practically non-existent after the Piccolo fight. Tien doesn't even show up in the Buu saga except for brief cameo appearance despite certainly being able to sense everything around him.
There are inconsistencies and contradictions all over the place.
Toriyama may have a brief inking of who should take the spotlight, but that's the extent of his "planning." The most extensive long-term planning he probably did was starting the trunks/android arc and thinking of doing a torch-passing story from Goku to Gohan.
Dragon Boxes are the best version, imo.
