Dragon Quest Community Thread: Come in! Would you like a Puff-Puff?

I'm in love with my DQVI repro on my SNES, it's one of my favorite games now! The graphics are so cute from that era (late SNES) this game is so charming. It's underrated compared to the others (only a 8.1 on gameFAQs), the SNES version is better than the DS, I have both. Thank God for repro carts!

I'm up to the final boss, what's the best place to grind? Just outside his tower (in the final dungeon)?
...that's what I've been using. My characters are bw level 41-44 and I've almost mastered "Hero" and about to begin "superstar".

I'm thinking about getting DQIII Remix for my SNES...even tho I have DQIII GBC, the graphics, feel, and charm of the games from the latter half of the 16-bit era are just irresistible.

You could save yourself a lot of money by just buying the JPN versions (which are unbelievably cheap) and buying an Everdrive to play the translated versions. Plus you would prevent the destruction of old (and irreplaceable) game soft by doing this instead of getting repros.

Alright, this was fun.

Now that I'm finally done with all the mainline games, I want to delve into some remakes/original, mainly PS2 DQV and SNES DQVI.

how do you get a cat in your party in DQ3?

So this is totally random, but I was curious the other day after finishing DQ1 on iOS to see what they made the game in. I extracted the IPA and mostly just found binary files, so nothing too interesting yet. However when I did the same thing for DQ4 I found Unity files. Was there a version of Unity for NDS? I need to look into that. I find it kind of interesting that DQ4 was done in Unity but it doesn't appear that DQ1 was. I'm guessing this would mean that likely DQ5 and DQ6 were also Unity games.

The implication here of course is that with some UI and input work these games could conceivably appear on any platform Unity compiles for.

Probably meaningless, but it was interesting to me.

Edit: Looks like DQ8 is also Unity, http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/dragon-quest-viii-on-ios-android-runs-on-unity.251108/

Edit2: I wish I could read Japanese better, http://www.4gamer.net/games/210/G021014/20140408096/

The original versions didn't use Unity, but the ports do. One of the developers who worked on DQ8 mobile actually posted on Touch Arcade and talked a bit about it.

DQ1-3 were developed by different developers.

DQVIII ported on Unity? mmmmh my hopes for a steam version now doubled!!

I would pay a lot of money for that.
I was just thinking of hooking the PS2 back up to play some VIII tonight.

A Steam version of DQVIII would be really nice. Bonus points if it uses the cloud feature to transfer saves between iOS, Android, OS X and Windows.

DQIV question:
I'm a little confused on how to do the money trick with Torneko. I have a bunch of money, I know how to make a profit by selling armor, and I know to get Cautery Swords and sell them in my shop.

Now I keep reading about people saying you sell the swords in Ch 5? Where do I put the swords to ensure they carry over? I already gave some to my wife, was that incorrect?

EDIT: I've beaten both the NES and DS versions. Just figured I could use a boost this time around.

In Torneko's inventory and bag.

did Chunsoft come back to DQ?
I saw Spike Chunsoft mention in DQIII iOS title page

They did the original I think. Usually Square Enix lists all the people who worked on past versions when they do remakes of DQ games.

Random question, what's a good first time party for DQ3? I went with Thief, Mage, Priest (and the hero of course) but I'm still early. I really need to finish DQ7 first.

I am really enjoying the party chat in DQ4. :( Too bad it was removed in the DS version.
DQQ 8 is unplayable on my phone (and i guess all phones )
I won't be double dipping DQ5 unless they port the PS2 version with the DS addition , but i am guessing the DS remark will be easier to port.

Will be getting DQ3 on Android when it comes here.

I hope SE will be smart and release DQ7 on 3DS in the west before porting it to Smart phones WW.

Loto Trilogy GBC should be on 3DS VC if it's not already. Or Square-Enix could be awesome and port the new mobile versions and release them on the eShop w/ controller support, fixed IQ, etc. ... but they won't.

It'll be kinda strange to go from DS IV, to PS2 V, and then back to DS VI.

Hi guys,I have a question,I started DQ8 on my ps2,I have reached Pickham but I no longer have the will to continue playing.
I started farming for gold in order to buy better equipment and weapons but the battles take so long and I earn so little in terms if gold.
It takes so long to farm for one piece of equipment it gets tiring.
Please is there something I can do to get more gold or finish battles faster?I really like everything in this game, its really a masterpiece but the grinding becomes so tiring and monontous
Should I try another DQ game? Are the DS game more accesible ?
Thanks for your time

So the main issue is that you can't afford everything a new town has to offer in one go, huh? You know, you're not exactly obligated to buy every new piece of equipment at once. Buy what you can afford, and continue the game. You'll be in the area for a while so no worries about leaving Pickham behind too early.

Also, I don't recall having any money problems at that point the last time I played. Have you been finding and defeating the special monsters along the way and selling their monster coins? I believe there are other ways to raise money using the Alchemy Pot, but I'm never abused it so I wouldn't know. You can also get some decent equipment as prizes from the Pickham casino, but that requires tokens which cost money. You can just save and reload abuse the casino until you win big. But that's just another form of grinding, come to think of it...

Hm. It's all relatively the same. You'll be tempted to grind whenever you reach a new town because you might not have enough to buy everything in the shops.

You are not meant to upgrade everyone's equipment to the latest from the shops in each town. You should pick up the biggest upgrades, and pay more attention to additional effects (like breath damage reduction) than defense power, etc. You should also try to make what you can with alchemy.

You don't have to worry about missing items in DQVIII. You'll revisit towns often enough. That game has like 3 or 4 separate forms of fast travel. Two of them are available fairly early.

I'm replaying the PS2 version of Dragon Quest 5. A few thoughts:
  • The graphical style here seems really similar to Dragon Quest 7 3DS. I think the team that worked on that must have drawn some inspiration from this game, since it is a similar attempt to take the original Dragon Quest 7 style into full 3D.
  • Some things in this game still look very good, but the animations are very old fashion... something about the idle animations of everything just looks dopey. Reminds you that it's 10 years old.
  • I forgot how good this game is at ramping the player up. Manages to start things off in a very safe way (folowing Papas, allowing dead characters to come back with 1HP, limited map/dungeon exploration) without feeling hand-holdy or "on rails"
  • I really prefer playing Dragon Quest games on handheld. I've played the DS version enough and wanted to do the PS2 one again but man it's really hard to just boot this thing up, wait through the translation every time, play for 30 minutes, try to rush through the rest of a dungeon to get to the save point and repeat the next time I want to play

I just watched some DQ5 PS2 videos on YouTube ,, my memory of it was so much better :(

DQ5 DS art style age much better. Oh well.

I bought DQ2 last night. Really like the sprite for the Hero, it looks a lot more like the artwork than past versions for this game. Controls are pretty much the same as DQ1 on iOS, and the way they handled multiple enemies in battle and having more than one party member for items is pretty intuitive and easy. I almost died going from Midenhall to Leftwyne but once I got there I leveled up to 3 and haven't had issues since and I am now in the town where you meet the Princess.

The dialogue is much like the iOS version of DQ1 with all the "thou" and "must" type stuff, so if you were annoyed in that one, then you'll be annoyed in this one. I kind of wish the game had the bag as only having like 10 inventory spots per character is pretty much the one "archaic" feature they didn't improve upon for this version.

I play it upscaled in PCSX2 with widescreen, and it's glorious. Mostly unstretched (except on the world map, for some reason), but 2D elements like text don't look great.

Also seems to be very easy to emulate, presumably because of its low polygon counts and such. I still like how it looks.

VIII looks much better, of course, but seems to have slowdowns in weird places for me.

Edit: Actually, battles are stretched too, but I just tolerated it somehow. I might change to 4:3 if I keep playing.

How are you playing DQV PS2 English? Emulator and patch?
If you've somehow managed to play this on ur PS2...I would do anything if this was possible (ala reproduction carts).

There is no way to play it on a PS2 without some sort of modification. Easiest way is to get a memory card with Free MC Boot on it and use that to boot one of the many game loaders like HDLoader or ESR.

What is an Everdrive?

Flashcart for old game consoles. Somewhat expensive but compared to repros not so bad. Although I've recently learned its possible now to make NES and SNES repros without destroying original cartridges thanks to this -- but Everdrive is still probably a better choice.

Fan translation. I'm playing on a PS2 with a burned disc using Free McBoot and ESR (yes I have the original as well; it came with a demo for DQ8 so I took that out and keep the burned disc there). Emulator is OK but I find PCSX2 (and Dolphin for that matter) to still be very buggy and don't like the idea of my games crashing randomly... also an actual PS2 is 100% accurate which is very nice.

I'm also running it at 480p thanks to GSModeSelector; looks so much better than 480i! Also I didn't know there was a widescreen patch for DQ5. I'm fine with 4:3 so I'll probably just keep going but looks neat.

In case you're not aware, widescreen patches are a PCSX2 emulator thing, not a patch you apply to the ISO.

PCSX2 hasn't been buggy in this game, for what it's worth. I think there was a crash that was fixed a year or so ago, but I haven't experienced it.

I played through the game in PCSX2 a few months ago. It's perfect except for the final dungeon, where the camera would like to go underneath the floor in the 'outside' sections.

So it's possible to play DQV in English on my NTSC PS2, incredible! It looks like I need a device to burn (the game) onto a PS2 disc or am I reading this wrong?

I'm playing DQ3 for the first time...

I waited far too long to play it. I can honestly say I'm enjoying it more than any of the classic Final Fantasy titles. I might restart because I want to use a Thief, though.

So I'm decently far into DQ2 iOS and I thought I'd offer up some thoughts. The combat difficulty isn't particularly high, and they've rebalanced XP gains (or it might be the same as SNES I forget) so once you get the ship your levels will sky rocket for awhile. I gained a bunch of levels while I was trying to find the hidden sea treasure, which it seems like didn't show up until I talked to the correct NPC(s).

This is probably the one gameplay issue that still really exists in this game, a lot of times it isn't super evident what to do and for things you might remember you need to do from playing before, it feels like you have to talk to certain NPCs to set event flags letting you progress. For someone with a lot of RPG and DQ experience this isn't really bad, but I could see people playing this for the first time and being really turned off by it. This is of course just a product of the era the game is from so it is kind of unreasonable to expect it to be changed.

A thing that definitely needs to be fixed is the crash bug. It seems like going into sleep often causes the sound effects to stop working. Music still plays, but there are no sound effects and for some reason this results in the game crashing when you speak to some NPCs in towns (seems like shops mostly). Luckily you don't really lose progress because the game auto-saves every time you enter a town, but it is still annoying.

I also had it crash when I tried to open a treasure chest and all my party members inventories were full. Dropping an item prevented the crash but it was odd and would've been really frustrating to someone who wasn't able to deduce the problem right away.

My characters are currently levels 24, 22, 17 and I have all 5 crests. IIRC I need the Moon Fragment next so I can take on the cave of Malroth or whatever. I'm also trying to figure out what I need to do to get Don Calico (one of the many name changes) to give me the Water Flying Cloth. I've saved and re-started the app but he hasn't finished it yet.

Anywho, overall I think the game is a pretty good port/remake for iOS and the only thing I'd like to see is a stability fix. I'm playing on an iPhone 5s with iOS 8.0.2 installed so I don't think it is my hardware as the issue is pretty consistent in its cause. I really hope they put out DQ3 for iOS as that is of the first 9 DQ games the one I have played the least.

You can always go back to the tavern and add a thief to your party. They'll start at level one, and you'll need to train them up quick, and even then they'll be lagging a bit behind the rest of your party for a while, but it's probably a better idea than starting the game over just to keep your team levels balanced.

And if you really want to balance your team levels, you can unload your extra party members at the tavern for a while, take your Hero and Thief out for a stroll, kill the Hero, and then have the Thief train solo for a while, as he drags a coffin around.

Guys, I know this is super random, but does anyone know (or is there even a way to confirm) if this is actually Mr. Akira Toriyama or his official account? link

Or is it just some fan?

The account liked a DQ fanart piece I did, and I need to know if I need to keel over and die from fanboying or not.

Edit:

For the curious, (and at the risk of partaking in shameless self-promo) this is my piece that he(?) liked.
