Dragon Quest Heroes |OT| - The World Tree's Woe and Some Heroes We Know

Played this for about 5 hours the last two days. I'm enjoying it well enough, but admittedly a lot of that has to do with me being a huge DQ fan and being amazed at seeing all these characters and monsters in glorious HD. Not to mention the fan service and just the joy of getting a DQ game in English in 2015.

I knew the gameplay would be repetitive going in but I was still hoping for a bit more variety. There's story missions, side quests, challenges, grottos, trials, and it's all the same shit. The grottos are literally just "do a story mission over again". I did the first challenge in Arba after getting the world map and after half an hour I realized that it's literally just an endless swarm of monsters and there's no point to it beyond being a completionist or just doing some extra grinding.

Voice acting is a mixed bag. Some are great. Some are average. Some are terrible. I don't know if it's just an English dub thing, but whether it's a CG cutscene or an event scene, there's always a 2-3 second pause between every line of dialogue and it's quite annoying.

I wish there was a quicksave option. I understand and like the novelty of keeping the traditional saving method alive with a makeshift church in the Stonecloud but just being able to save through the menu would be a hell of a lot quicker. There's other menu fuckery too. With the sidequests, why do I have to report them as completed? Why can't they just be completed when I finish them? Why can't I just get my accolades from that woman next to her automatically instead of having to find her and then mash X for 30 seconds? Why can I only hold 30 ingredients? I have my own airship and one of my companions is the ruler of the entire realm and I can't find anywhere to store more than 30 ingredients?

I don't fully understand how leveling works. Do the people outside of your main party gain experience? It seems like they do but not quite as much as the others.

Despite those complaints I'm still enjoying it, but I can see why people who aren't into Dragon Quest would give up on the game. I pray this game sells well and SE won't use the sales of this Dynasty Warrior spin-off as an excuse to say "see, Americans don't like DQ so it's not worth translating anything."

It's been said multiple times in the thread (and just a handful of posts ago) that you can increase the bag limit through the sidequests, one of the first ones you get increases it from 30->45. (I think it's #8)

I know that, but I'm questioning why that even exists. I don't recall there being any limit to the amount of ingredients you can hold in any of the more recent DQ games. Just seems like an artificial barrier to give the side quests where you do the same repetitive shit some meaning. It's a shitty game design decision.

Weird design choice in general to keep more classical like the source material, but you can upgrade bag capacity with sidequest for ingredient. There a Auto-Save feature...

They gain XP, but at lower rate

The reason you must "report" to complete the quest is that you can decide to use materials for crafting instead of turning them in for quest completion.
(yes some quests do require you to turn in materials you'd rather use to make uber accessories, and of course that design is intentional).

Surprising turn of events: the monsters were never friendly, they were under a spell to lull humans into a false sense of safety. They were just released from the spell...

I wished they would have stayed faithful to the source material by not imposing an arbitrary limit on the number of different ingredients you can carry or limiting the EXP non main party members gain.

That actually makes sense, but now I realize why one of the quests I thought I completed is still active. I picked a quest that I had already met the requirements for and when I went to report it as completed, was told I had too many ingredients and needed to get rid of some stuff. So I go make some alchemy stuff and when I came back to the quest girl, it didn't show as completed anymore. So I guess I must have used the ingredients required to complete the quest on alchemy stuff. Yet another reason why the arbitrary ingredient cap is bullshit.

I played to game up until you are introduced to the camp. I didn't get much time after that to play. From my limited experience with the game, I love it. It runs smooth.

Got this from Gamefly, no idea how the combos work. I hit square repeatedly, sometimes it's a four hit combo, sometimes two, sometimes three. I've tried delaying my presses, pressing directions...nothing. I just don't get why sometimes I do different combos.

I was disappointed, primarily because the tactical stuff is really off-putting. It reminds me a bit of Brütal Legend in this regard-- starts off as an enjoyable action game, then gets weighed down by a tower defense mechanic that I have no interest in. Had DQH been more like Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll, I would have liked it more... but, as it stands, I think I screwed up by spending money on this.

I believe it depends on the control type that you choose.

This and the nonexistant difficulty are offputting. I have a copy of warriors orochi 3 ultimate i might use to scratch the musou itch.

Thinking I probably should've gone with Samurai Warriors 4-II instead. The difficulty was fine in DQH, I thought, but I lost too many times because I didn't dispatch monster medals right to defend an item-- and that bothered me to no end.

Yeah later missions penalize you heavily by not moving tactically (and post game areas one misplacement would cause you the entire mission).
Bear in mind that difficulty was toned down heavily by Horii's command :D

Looks like I'm going to be playing this next week my CE is stuck at Canadian custom since Monday -_- .

Man that sucks ....

My friend got the game and played for about 10h and he said he was not impressed but I think you enjoy this game more if you are a fan of Dragon Quest series (which is not the case for him) .

Yep i had about the same opinion as you at 5 hours, but it get a little harder the further you advance. i got my first failed at 9 hour, and thing seem to get lot harder... but at least challenging...

I heard post content is really hard and you have to grind a lot...

I think a large part of the fun of this game is the power fantasy of seeing characters traditionally never rendered in 3D fighting in an action setting. I can understand people who aren't familiar with DQ not being as giddy when it introduces a new cast member, but for me, this is transporting me back to being a 10 year old vividly imagining my characters carrying out these attacks in a largely text-centric turn-based combat system.

Terry flipping around with his Arcbolt Sword is kind of blowing my mind, and the DQ3 costume on Luceus is nostalgia overload. In 3rd or 4th grade we had to make paper-mache masks in art class and I made one of Erdrick/Loto. No one appreciated my epic nerd-dom.

There's an in-game moves list.

I can definitely understand why people aren't enjoying certain elements of this game. Much of it is DQ transported to a Trill-like game.

And there are some things the game doesn't tell you to do that might save people frustration later on down the line. Like how you can outright start a spell as one character and switch to the next - very helpful for those lizard assholes.

While I'm leveling some complaints, two of the boss fights are boring. The s
tatue
and the g
uardian that you have to launch off the side
. Compared to the other ones, those just made my eyes glaze over.

Lastly, it sucks that you can't play the story missions after you beat them. I get that you are grinding condensed random battles, but some of these middle to later missions are insanely fun and I'd love to run through them again.

Those are just small issues though.

5ish. Too early to make the call on difficulty?

Yeah, it ramps up. The quests get harder, the bosses force you to pay attention, and placement starts to get really important, as does specialization of characters.

Ive never played a musou or DQ game. Is this a good place to start? I have to say, i LOVE the artstyle from what i see.

Good for a first musou game? Sure.

Good for a first DQ game? Not really. Mainline DQ games are not much like this game at all gameplay wise.

This is not really a classic Mousu game, more a small arena action RPG with sometimes tower defence section. If you like action RPG and this style, you can't really go wrong...

I haven't played it but I think it looks like a great first DQ game and I feel SE is actually hoping to get people into the franchise this way.

The game looks beautiful and you'll get to know the world and characters of DQ. Doesn't mean you can enjoy a standard DQ RPG afterwards.

Started playing last night and noticed that the narrator is Daddy Pig. As the parent of a 3 year old daughter who loves Peppa Pig, that made me laugh.

Does anyone know when this will be available to purchase in the UK PS Store? I've been searching for the game all day and had no luck.

I guess you could like at it that way. In that sense, it does give you an idea of what DQ games are about. Just don't go buying mainline DQ games expecting them to play anything like this game.

Both SW4 and SW4-II are better games than DQH. Though SW4-II nerfed hyper attacks..;<

Are there any technical issues like framerate drops?
Majority of omega force developed musou games have technical issues and erratic framerate is the most prominent one. DQH is no exception. There's framerate drops and stuttering..
Anyone who has claimed this is almost smooth 60 fps should get his/her eyes checked.

Ah well, a smooth framerate would have sealed the deal. This or Tales of zestiria... I need some lighthearted JRPG goodness.

It's definitely not perfectly smooth, but about 10 hours in now and I haven't noticed any significant stuttering. It definitely starts dropping frames when there's a lot on screen at once, but it's never been (to my eyes) a major issue.

Yeah, I think you and I are in the minority. After an hour or two I've definitely noticed the throbbing/stuttering of the framerate, but I still kind of appreciate the 60fps vs just another locked at 30fps console game.

What are you guys favorite party so far? I love the Trunks looking guy with the Sword, but I'm not sure what my other three people would be(haven't unlock everyone yet).

Great... This has totally ruined my hype for the game and my copy arrives tomorrow. Those sections in Brutal Legend took one of the greatest premises for a game ever and completely spunked it up the wall. Shit :( I don't think my enthusiasm for everything Dragon Quest is great enough to deal with forced bullshit strategy nonsense.

i think he hyperbolic the tower defense section a little, they are nowhere near as terrible and micromanaging as Brutal Legend, still a action game as the core. It's still a action RPG, "some" story section and "some" challenge just you have to escort or defend a place. Open area are like Tinity : Souls of Zill O'll in free mode.

Ya, I didn't find the game to start pushing back until about 7-10 hours in. It does ramp up, there are some 1-on-1 boss battles that force you to learn Block/Dodge timings and are standard "learn the attack pattern or die in 2 hits" type of affairs.

You don't really control them at all. Set 'em and forget 'em.

Some monsters will act as sentries, some will do things instantly, and none of them are really all that important.
