The latest press release for the upcoming Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake has also confirmed that the newest mainline entry in the Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age, has sold nearly 8.5 million units globally to date.

The same press release confirms that the Dragon Quest franchise as a whole has sold over 94 million units worldwide, surpassing the 88 million units confirmed in June 2023.

In December 2024, a Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake press release confirmed that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age sold over 7 million units worldwide, implying that over a million and a half have been sold since, which seems unbelievable.

Awesome, cant wait for XII, and how they will do it without Akira Toriyama... :messenger_crying:
And it reminds me that I still have to play mine XI DE...

I never finished it. I bounced off pretty hard when the game forced you to play as the other characters during a certain story section, it was mind-numbingly boring, in my opinion

That said, I genuinely had a lot of fun up until that point

Well deserved and imo among the best in the series.

Can't wait to see more of XII. Hope they don't fuck it up.

I really enjoyed it, but never finished it. Here's hoping it gets a Switch 2 upgrade patch, just so I have an excuse to play it again.

There was a lot to like there but I thought DQ8 was better. Bummer they only release remakes and monsters/builders games now and don't make any new dragon quests.

I never played or bought the S variant as I thought that was complete fucking greedy horseshit (not even having an option for an upgrade, but having to pay full price again for just such tiny extras, plus it was Switch graphics as a base) I did really have fun with the gameplay though.

I hope the rumour ages ago about it switching to non turned based doesn't happen. If its no longer turned based, I'll be passing completely, sadly

Man I really need to fire this up. FF8R and FFXII have been my JRPG fix lately (forgot how good these two were) but I stare at this game every time I load up steam. Hoping they port or remaster DQ8 to PC eventually.

There are countless people who can imitate his style.

Many improved it in their own different ways.
Yep, anyone can copy.
But create is another thing... There are good creators out there in the Akira style, but none of them are Akira.
Will always have that 'what could have been' feeling... At least for me.

Any chance we'll get any news on DQ12 this year?
I like Square and even enjoy most of their modern games but god damn it takes foooooooooever to release games.

Maybe next year we might see some actual gameplay.

I don't unserstand how anyone can mention this and not mention the insane overworld theme blasting non-stop from start to finish. Never been more sick of a tune.

The thing that really stuck out to me about DQ 11 was a low-key aspect of that it hit me like a ton of bricks. I was playing through this on the eve of the birth of my son--now 6--and I still think about it often.

The hero is raised by his adoptive grandpa, Chalky, who dies of natural causes very early in the game. The player doesn't interact with Chalky much, just enough to get the contours of "chill grandpa guy".

Separately, throughout the entire rest of the game, the player can find journals of an adventurer all over the world on random bookshelves. As you read these journals over the course of the game, it becomes obvious that the author is actually Chalky himself, describing his own younger life.

Something about a young man incidentally becoming acquainted with the experiences of his father figure in this indirect way is beautiful to me. Aside from the obvious thought of wondering what my own son might learn about me when I'm gone, there's a bigger metaphor about the lingering presence and "voice" of a parent that remains even after death.

Even writing about it now makes me emotional. Right game at the right time, I guess.

Anyway, good game. 👍

Loved it. Although it should have ended after Act 2. It had such a nontraditional (for the DQ series), bittersweet, "we won, but at what a cost" ending. Act 3 had to fuck all that up with time travel shenanigans.

DQXI is modern JRPGs done right. Turns out you can modernize your game and still stick to the gameplay and identity that made your series popular in the first place.

Massive side eye to Final Fantasy.

I somehow managed to replay DQ11 from scratch (after nearing the end and quitting) and beat it + all postgame content, it was so good and very well deserved success, hopefully DQ12 comes out in <1 year

At some point it changes to the map theme from DQ3 and it's mega kino. It's quite late in the game tho.

DQ11 OST is actually good IMO

Game is great too. Doesn't try too hard to be something it's not. It's kind of like the JRPG equivalent of a boomer shooter. Except with a bigger budget.

Amazing game from probably my favorite franchise/IP. If sales were a bit stronger outside of Japan, this could be a 10 million seller sort of franchise but I fear any steps taken to get more Western sales may diminish sales in Japan. I feel it's such a strong seller there because it sticks to staples of the series. I'm very nervous and excited about DQ XII. I had no idea how another 3D mainline entry could impress me like DQ VIII did, but I though XI was incredible and I might like XI more than VIII.

Edit: VIII is really deserving of a remake or remaster. It's been too long since that PS2 era masterpiece got any attention.

Its a shame the S version is just a port of the Nintendo Switch version. I would buy again, but I prefer stick with the native PS4 version.

Or 5.

5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 all deserve remasters.

I'd especially like remasters of 5, 8, and 9
There has rumors of a DQ9 remake or remaster for years and I'm still waiting. Game is way too good to be trapped on the DS for eternity. Give me co op DQ you cowards!

Awesome man, I'm happy for the success of this series, honestly. I've never played a Dragon Quest outside of messing around with those builders games on Gamepass, but it's a series that I want to delve into at some point, as it seems to command quite a reverence from many RPG fans.

Question for you guys, if I'm trying to dive into this, where do I start? Chronologically, are they just in order or are there some odd ones? I prefer to play story focused titles like RPG's in chronological order. Thanks in advance for suggestions fellas.

Well Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D takes place before DQ1&2. Those three games are part of Erdrick trilogy.

But majority of other DQ games works same way as Final Fantasy, they have their own contain story.

Nice, so 3, 1, 2, 4 and so forth would work then?

Yes, but he aware that, like a previous poster said, 3 to 1 to 2 form their own trilogy called the Erdrick trilogy, Erdrick being the name of an ancient hero from whom the main characters are descended (and 11 is technically a prequel to 3 as well) and then 4, 5, and 6 are their own trilogy called the Zenithian trilogy, a mythical city that appears in all three.
