Dragon's Crown Thread of Import Impressions and Elf

Dat Wizard on a raptor:
ibzHWnWZezjeLO.jpg
And my favorite wizard spell:
8 hours in, level 24 and 4 more stages + last boss left to clear normal.

No grinding so far, but it kind of sucks that there is no option to join random mp on the level of your choosing. All you can do is choose a level yourself and hope that someone joins/play with your friends.

Bad:
- Horrible controls (the game is designed for the vita)
- Battle system has little depth
- Loot balance is on the conservative side, and very little sense of reward
- Very very repetitive looking backgrounds

To sum it up: this game is a grindy 2D Diablo wanna-be that is not done right

There is just nothing that stands out aside from the artwork that makes me want to pick it up again. Give this rental before you buy. I really regret buying this game despite being a fan of games like the old capcom D&D games.

Okay. I hope you enjoy your next game purchase.

I've only played about three hours but it seems pretty fun and should be a good game for my train commute. I do think that it might be better on the PS3 though. Things can get pretty confusing on the vita's small screen when a bunch of stuff is going on.

What’s The Difference Between Dragon’s Crown’s Fighter, Amazon And Dwarf ?

Should have renamed Fighter's 'attract' skill to 'provoke'. Hopefully, there's a practical use of this skill.

Provoke/Attract chaining between 2 Knights( if the skill has CD ). Meat shield for tricky long-ranged mobs. Reposition bosses to minimise off-screen attacks. Holding bosses attention while the rest clear the minions.

I wish the boss and stages designs are hard and challenging in the sense it is subtly promoting synergy between players.

Been playing this since release, and to sum it up, this game is a major disappointment.
I am playing the console version.

Good:
- Pretty artwork
- Fully featured game-play mechanics (lots of small mini-games)
- At long last a new 2D side scrolling beat-em up in HD

Bad:
- Horrible controls (the game is designed for the vita)
- Battle system has little depth
- Loot balance is on the conservative side, and very little sense of reward

Those were the epitome of in-depth combat systems, for sure.

FF6 in box is only 1554 yen??!

Yes. Super Famicon games are not that rare in Japan and they are priced accordingly. I love that in the japanese retro scene they are still player and not collector focused. US pricing is pretty crazy at the moment. The super potato I went to had like 20 boxed copies of FF VI for sale.

But yes, both Crono Trigger and FF VI where around 12 euros a piece in boxes. You cold get pretty much anything boxed under 4000 yen that is not super super rare.

It is. You can join someone during a quest if they have free slots.

Ah cool. Is the voice chat built in, or do you have to be in a party?

EDIT: This also reminds me that I still havent managed to play D&D PS3 multiplayer or beat the game...online or off.

I agree with almost all of this.

It's definitely a Vanillaware game, for better and worse.

For the record, the controls on the Vita work great. Especially using touch to open chests/unlock doors etc. I can imagine using the right stick must suck for that stuff.

As for the combat, feels about as deep as the old Capcom D&D games. Seems like DC has a much bigger list of moves though. Plus the Rune magic.

I got the game this morning, and I put a few hours into it. It's definitely taking some time to unleash all its mechanics, but the actual combat and stuff is alright. I'm still getting the hang of how to use the Amazon. She's fast, and really mobile, but it's important to get lined up right for her attacks. She has a parry that I'm having trouble using right. It can be hard to see enemy attack tells when you're playing with four people.

It's definitely a Vanillaware game, so I'm not sure how long the combat depth will remain satisfying, but it's fine for now. It's still a really beautiful game.

I actually don't mind the right-stick stuff all that much at the moment, but it'd definitely be much, much easier to handle with a touchscreen.

That links to nothing. I wnanted to see it too :*(

Just got done trolling eBay...no one selling early copies either :***(

Is the PS3 version of the game 720p or 1080p?

I was able to confirm 1080P on the PS3 from a Japanese streamer on like the first or second page. So that's good news :D

This ^ I love the D&D arcade games, but to say DC's battle system is more shallow is... weird.

Finally cleared normal mode! There was no "grinding" involved - I've backtracked to previously cleared areas few times to clear the quests, but that's about it.
Cleared 80% of the second half with randoms/or 1 friend (duoing isn't bad, since bosses have less hp than with 3/4 players).
It took me 10 hours 30 minutes and I was level 29 when I killed the last boss. Took me under a minute with a Wizard.
Do you always get 9x S rank treasures for that guy?

Can't wait to play the hard mode.

Edit:
Don't know if it's been posted here before, but you don't have to purchase DLC to get new Game Master voices.
Completing the game unlocks a Game Master voice of the class you cleared it with to purchase in the magician's tower. Costs 1 million gold.

Just played some PvP. It was awesome. Definitely not putting this game down anytime soon.

Just curious at this point, but what do you really use gold for? I feel like I'm earning a lot more than I'm spending in the basic treadmill of identifying items, selling stuff I don't want, reviving new partners, and so on.

What you've listed + continues. The latter can get really expensive.

PvP pics:
I was terrible.

are plot, music and immersion/atmosphere similar to odin's sphere? I really loved these parts of that game and I am jumping in if these elements are preserved

Just unlocked multiplayer.

It took me about 3 1/2 hours. I did a few side quests here and there too. Wasn't rushing through it.

So you're stuck on singleplayer for a few hours, or local only?

Me and my friends are getting together to play this when it comes out so I want to make sure that we can all play with no delays

Seems like a lot of people really don’t like using the right analog stick to move the cursor.
Vita version FTW!

I only grabbed the Vita version cause I'm more of a portable guy, but the game certainly feels like it was made for the Vita in terms of ease of play etc.

Just tried a level 17 dungeon with some randoms. Holy shit multiplayer is fun.

Also, Elf is still the best.

Seems like local only to me. I haven't tried it, but at the tavern menu, there are "press start to join" icons for all four players.

Yeah, same here. Very, very tempted to switch. Arrrgh! What are the cons for Vita? Lower frame-rate, smaller screen (but still, dat OLED!)?

Here:

I rounded up all the info we have so far on the differences between the two versions:

Vita
+ OLED screen making the game prettier.
+ Touch controls to pick up stuff/open chests.
+ The ability to take screenshots.
- Framerate buckles under pressure when heaps of stuff is happening on the screen
- Easier to loose track of your character due to the smaller screen.

PS3
+ A more stable framerate.
+ Play it on a big T.V.
+ A little easier to keep track of your character.
- Having to move the cursor to pick up stuff/open chests.
- Can’t take screenshots.

I've just cleared the first floor of the additional dungeon which unlocks after clearing the game on normal - basically a random set of rooms from all dungeons.

I was automatically grouped with other players, despite dispatching with my NPCs. No idea if it's mp-exclusive, but it was really hard. On the plus side, I got 3 levels in around 15 (?) minutes while there. Some really good equipment as well.

I've also experienced my first slowdowns that were actually a bit off-putting. 2 Wizards using everything they have, summoning golems and 2 other guys going all-out as well and a ton of enemies on screen. It was crazy, but a ton of fun.

The Vita being portable is a pretty big plus too!

Well yeah.......I thought that was pretty obvious! : P

Thanks a ton -- wow, pretty evenly matched. The $10 savings and having portability may be the factor for me in swapping my pre-order from PS3 to Vita.

I forgot to mention that the Vita version is cheaper. OLED + touch controls are enough for me. The framerate isn't perfect for the PS3 version too apparently...

I've got a big Panasonic plasma and I'd still rather get it on the Vita. For me OLED is king....it'll look stunning on the Vita!

It looks better on Vita. It looks good on TV, but the OLED makes the art and colors pop in a way most people's TV won't.

The lighting is great, too.

When I did my Amazon pre-order I applied my Discover Cash Back money -- anyone know how that is handled on a cancel?
Wouldn't they hold off on charging it until it shipped? I have no idea, I'd probably just ask Amazon support.

Is it "Inferno" or "Infernal"? The trophy list IGN posted says "Infernal" but I'm taking that with a grain of salt.

The Japanese voices for the characters (as opposed to the narration) are just battle grunts/yells, right? No conversations or anything?

Since our artbook is being downgraded to softcover, and the English narration is available as loot drops anyway, if the first-month-free JP voices are nothing substantial I can push this purchase off until September or so without feeling like I've missed out. It'd take a lot of stress off my wallet...
Ugh, so much misinformation.

1. The artbook was always softcover. Please refer to the announcement of the artbook sent by Atlus on May 9, 2013.

2. The DLC is not JP voices. JP voices as options for the characters is standard with the game. The DLC is to change the narrator's voice.

Don't know if it's been posted here before, but you don't have to purchase DLC to get new Game Master voices.

Thanks. I knew the voice packs would be available in-game but I don't think it's been posted how you get them or how much they would cost. Is 1 million gold a lot, relative to the rate you gain it? How much gold did you have after beating the game on Normal?

Will this be cross-play, where you can play on Vita with friends who might be playing on the PS3?
It is not cross-play. You can transfer your save Vita <--> PS3, but Vita can only play with Vita and PS3 can only play with PS3.

Around 20k. I basically had around 10-40k when playing on normal, but maybe the amount will change on hard and infernal. Item identification prices will probably increase as well, so I have no idea how it will all turn out in the end.

True, but I can imagine reaching a point on the higher difficulties where you only identify S-ranks and sell the rest, so I imagine that will cancel out.

Noooooo the artbook is not hardcover!?!?!?!??!?! What a disappointment :(
Serious question: why do people think it's hardcover? Atlus has been saying soft-cover since they first announced it.

Seems like a lot of people really don’t like using the right analog stick to move the cursor.
Vita version FTW!

The problem is the way right stick utilized in the game.

Moving a cursor around the whole screen to find hidden points is tedious. For some reason the cursor floats around as well, and it is very disconcerting when there is already so many things happening on the screen. To get an idea of how frustrating it is, imagine replacing your mouse with a controller.

It feels like they shoehorned the thief/hidden spot feature to make use of the vita's touchpad, and they simply could not figure out a good method to implement it for console.

I've basically stopped using the right stick except to unlock doors/chests because it slows down the pace of the game down to a crawl.

Well because all the shots and vids i have seen show the japanese artbook with the hardcover so i was expecting the same. :(
