Dragon's Dogma Demo Impressions

Don't know if you know, but GI gave it an 8.5. Saying it doesn't really have a story line. I thought it did though? Isn't there a trailer called "story trailer?"

I think the whole story is just the dragon part, gotta find out the mystery of the cycles and how the characters are related to it, probably not too big

It just says:

If you need a strong story to pull you along in your adventures, you may be disappointed with Dragon's Dogma. In the beginning of you game,
your character meets a dragon and has his or her heart yanked out.
From there, it's up to you to find the
dragon and slay it.
That's basically all there is, for better or worse."

From what I've heard, that's only a part of the story.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but a strong story is almost meaningless in this type of game. I beat Oblivion's story missions just because I had done everything else in the game. I got bored 30 hours into Skyrim so I can't speak for that one. I mean, assuming the game truly is open world and you don't have to advance the story to open up areas.

Agreed. I don't think I've ever played a huge open-world RPG with a very impressive narrative - just serviceable at best.

I'm not sure how this game will do, but for me.. it'll be a good MH substitute, since I've been waiting for a US MHP3 forever.

and Character creating? Who really gives a fuck? It's not like you're looking at his/her face the whole game.

Finally played the demo last night. I felt a little over my head starting with the Griffin fight as I was basically just spamming, and it all seemed a little chaotic. Once into the prologue quest and actually figuring out moves, tried a little finesse which got me pretty excited.

The amount of different attacks available was very nice, even tapping quick attack slightly after the first move ends gives you a different move (overhand sword crash) than if you'd just kept hitting the button. With the Souls games, I mainly turtled and took my time killing enemies. Dragon's Dogma combat isn't quite as solid, but it is definitely a lot more flashy and feels very satisfying when you get your moveset under control.

All this framerate and tearing talk is getting out of hand. I played the PS3 demo 3 times and didn't notice anything. My buddy played the 360 demo and didn't notice anything. Some of you are too busy looking for things to nitpick about.

Anyway, I'm seriously considering getting this instead of Diablo 3 this month. Love the vibe I got from the demo. It kicked all kinds of ass.

I still like Dragon's Dogma |OT| Stop Dragon My Heart Around

Not being able to notice it is good, but people aren't over exaggerating the issues either.

People aren't over exaggerating. But holy shit, we've been harping on this since April 25th. Think about that. It's ridiculous.

Haha, it's not really surprising. Something like SotC gets brought up and I immediately think of the shitty framerate that literally gave me headaches. Tearing and frame drops can actually make games completely unplayable if it's severe enough for certain people, and it's not really something they can just forget about. Hopefully the demo is just really old and the problems are much better.

Yeah I didn't really notice anything that bothered me either. Game runs just fine for me. Yeah, it can't compare to stuff you've seen on PCs, but I think I've just let myself not get to into that sort of thing. I've seen Metro 2033 on PC and that looked amazing. But I still play old games and stuff so I guess for me it's more about how fun the game is and if it's at least playable. The demo was nowhere near broken in frame rate for me.

SotC did the same thing to me. A shame too since I don't remember ICO being anywhere near that bad and I loved it.

I actually think the story looks interesting enough, but you are right. It is all about adventuring in the world and experiencing growth. Something which I think this game will pull off incredibly well. The Game Informer article was very positive overall and said that the game manages to do it's own thing, the combat and leveling is incredibly satisfying and it makes the genre feel fresh. That is all I needed to read.

Agreed. Stop Dragon My Heart Around is still the best one.

This times 100. The problems exist, but the repetitive complaints haven't stopped for over two fucking weeks. Let's move the fuck on and enjoy what the game can provide us.

In celebration of classic Capcom fantasy and jolly cooperation, now I'm off to complete my Magic Sword playthrough (^___^)

OXM has given it a 6 out of 10. It's a mag review, so I haven't found specifics yet. Not an encouraging score though, but I'd like to see the complaints. As a reference, they gave Amalur an 8, Skyrim a 10 and Dark Souls an 8.5.

Keep in mind that it's not the OXM who have been putting up all the videos. That's OXM UK.

Wonder what's the negatives, I hope it's just about the story stuff again

How do clothes and armour work in this?

You could equip different armor/clothing for different body parts like legs, torso, head, etc, and you could equip accessories like cape and I think for some you could wear clothes underneath and accessories on top, not sure the exact details but I know you could mix them up a bit.

This was the only excerpt from the review via Metacritic:

"Much like the main character's chest cavity, this RPG ultimately feels hollow, with no real heart."

They probably had quarrels with the story and maybe the world overall lacking in interesting content.

They probably just wanted to use that line.

Just played the demo finally. Tiny graphical foibles aside I thought it was bloody awesome. Hanging on to a Griffin and stabbing it in the neck is NEVER getting old. Get it in my eyes asap Capcom.

Decided to make a new pawn! Thought my old character look too similar to my main character

I think after watching several playthrough videos, I might go with the idea of just going with 1 pawn for the starter missions and see how it goes, until I unlock advance class I guess, I would like to try out the pawn community thing but maybe later.
