Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Convince me I should be a magic archer. seems a boring class!

Pretty much every shot from your arrow is a heatseeker (almost never miss). You can target 10 enemies at once in about 2 seconds and then the shot you hit them with pretty much staggers every beast in the game except the big ones, great dagger skills, the ability to shoot your tank pawn with an arrow that makes it either completely resistant to stun and/or any debilitations, but mostly I just enjoyed the ability to shoot an arrow that lit up the entire area, which makes night time day time.

I've tried numerous classes and Magic Archer is one of the better ones. Mage/Sorcerer are a complete bore. Strider is great fun. But I need to try assassin and Ranger. I can't bring myself to try the fighter/warrior stuff. Those classes always bore me in games like this. I prefer a more stealthy ranged approach. I definitely wouldnt recommend Magic Archer over the basic archer that you start with. That one was way more fun.

wait each generation of Ur-Dragon gets even more powerful!?

I haven't even got to one yet!

I'll have to read more about it in the guide, but it sounds like it gets harder each level, and heals per user death/quit while fighting it; however, it does sound like it can decrease in difficulty(damage output I'm assuming) based upon how many people are dying to it. Sounds like a nice balance will be reached where it just has insane amounts of HP/regen and still keeps you on your toes(but not enough to rage quit haha).

alright, I've already maxed vocation on Ranger/Strider and most of the skill I want, so I guess I can test the waters on Magic Archer

Also thanks for the Ur-Dragon info guys

Question about Magick Archers: Can your arrows be aimed manually?

I know they lock-on by default. Magic does, too, but you can pull up a manual aiming reticule by pressing L3 (on PS3). Is there a similar option for magic bows?

Fuck it, I'm going to say it. I've played long enough. This is one of my favorite games of all time, full stop. I've been picking at it, trying to like find a reason to dissuade myself. There are some niggling little problems. It's annoying I can't make my main pawn an assassin or magic archer or whatever. And it gets a little hacky slashy at times.

But god, has any other game replicated this feeling as well? THIS is what the Elder Scrolls games should be aiming for.

Consider the difference in atmospheric pull. The atmosphere is not merely for window dressing, its gameplay oriented. The enjoyment one gets from trekking deep into some woods, running out of lamp oil and then being virtually CONSUMED by the darkness - horrifying direwolf howls and haunting harpy sirens lulling you into the abyss, creepy fires in the great distance hinting at some new undiscovered area - is seriously second to none. It's one of the rarest feelings I've ever got from any game. It's like if Monster Hunter had a love child with Skyrim and Dark Souls, but it only took the best aspects of each game!

God, if the world was only a little bigger and there was a little greater variety of enemies, I don't think I would need to play anything else ever again. What a fucking experience so far

One of the things I really love so much about this game is the nighttime being actually dark, for me that goes a hugely long way in making the night feel spooky and atmospheric. It's nighttime as I post this and I can't see to the end of my garden, that's how it should be in all games and how it is in DD. Take Skyrim for example, its version of nighttime looks like evening in the real world.

I love the class, lots of power and flexibility. Using the upgraded flare shot in a cave full of undead is uber, great light source for anywhere dark as well. I'm learning how to use the explosive bolt effectively, I wish a normal arrow set it off, but it is only melee.

It starts slowly. Like really slowly, and doesnt ever get that cool. Ranger/Strider imo is much better.

No and it irritated the f*** outa me when fighting against enemies with multiple hit boxes. Unless I just completely missed an option that let me do it.

that means i should save the kill X number quests for NG+

i can't find fault in this, i FEEL this when i play. Its easily my game of the year, i don't recall ever digging something so much after completing it an still wanting to play it again. i don't normally do that.

Anyone know how the toss and trigger skill works? I've been trying to use it for ages, but all it does for me is knock 'em in the air, no explosion.

You have to push the button again immediately after knocking them in the air - they also have to retain their distance to you. It's an extremely short-range skill.

I will say that Magic Archer does have one of the coolest shots of all the archers though. It basically shoots out 5 sticky grenades, but they only explode when you hit them with melee. If you have an active tank, it works out nicely. I also found that if you shoot the cows/bison(whatever they are) with them, they'll stamp in anger hard enough to set them off. BOOM.

Someone help a semi-retard. I cannot find the Snake Skin purse for the life of me, its the only non-kill x,y,z quest I have left before I continue on with the Pawn Guild quest. I'm enjoying being a Warrior more than I thought, its so meaty, both me and my Pawn are Warriors, but we've made it to Vocation rank 9 at level 35. Time to go after their real jobs...

I found one in the water/river behind Gran Soren. The one with the lizard men in it. I didnt actually find it, but one of my pawns picked it up.

The M-Archer's Flare Shot thing looks and sounds so damn cool in places like Soulflayer Canyon. Blast it out into the pitch-black distance, silence, then a thunderous boom and sudden illumination a couple hundred metres away.

Yep, I love it. It did irritate me though when a lot of the time it would explode in mid air right in front of me instead of going to where I was aiming it.

It seems like the coolest parts of Magick Archer are the dagger skills: spell-enhanced melee skills, a stasis trap, an M.Def. buff, and the ability to set yourself on fire.

Oh my fucking GOD! I just got the purse as it was turning to nightfall. All of a sudden skeleton freaking mages and this god tier floating sorcerer with a crown appeared, ambushed us. Picture this, 2 warriors and 1 Mage named Issac that's pretty well made. He was basically the only ground to air assault, whittling away piece by piece off this things life, me and my pawn were cleaning up the overlying sorcerers and this "king" cast Maelstrom. I have never seen the spell with my own 2 eyes until now. Somehow we survived with me and my pawn jumping off a high rock landing a double air blow to this things head, killing him almost instantly after Issac the hired pawn mage had chipped away his life well enough...

Stunned!!!

But you can put the aiming circle on the edge of the hit box you want, say very top for the head, far left for the right arm. It takes some practice, but the extremities are easy enough.

I finished the game and gifting didnt appear to alter anything other than giving me an achievement. Throwing people off cliffs never seemed to affect the game or how people treated me either. The only change I noticed was the twinkly sound it made whenever you talked to someone that had received at least 10 gifts from you (or that you had escorted safely). Someone mentioned that there was a sex scene at some point, and I got that but it wasn't with a person I had gifted anything to. Or spent much time with to be honest. Was nice to get a little girl-girl going on though. I'm a pig.

Certain vendors with a high friendship value gets extra high end equipment for sale, for example the dude in Gran Soren will sell the golden belt, and the dude at the Greatwall will sell the royal and divine surcoat, both of which can only be found as low chance drops in the everfall.

BOOM.

The problem I have with the magic archer is that the bow skills are elemental based, that homing 6 shot thing is ice, whereas the exploding arrow one is fire, etc. It sounds useful, but really isn't because they don't tell you this anywhere in the game and you'd be wondering why the hell that lovely homing shot doesn't work against dire wolves and snow harpies. The normal bows skills work much better, they have no charge time, and hence dps is much much higher.

Ok beat the post game too. Ending was weird alright. I guess there could always be a sequel where they explain the pawns and their origin a bit more. My LI this time was the princess :)!

Final Boss was so easy :S . Especially compared to some of the bosses in Everfall. Beat the game at level 64 and now I unlocked NG+ too. Are there any reasons to play again? I heard the level cap is 200. Any uber bosses outside the Ur-Dragon?

I had a lot of fun with the game overall. Hopefully Capcom makes a sequel at some point where they improve :

-Pawn AI
-enemies type varieties (too few types)
-World Map (not enough variety in the area, no snow or desert and so on)

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
What is the Gen ## stuff you're all talking about? The Ur-Dragon?

I completely agree. It's currently my GOTY. Nothing comes close so far.

Consensus. Which is more useful on a Fighter pawn. Steel Will vs Dragons Maw?

I use Dragon's Maw on my pawn. I don't pay close attention to her fighting, but she seems to be routing enemies very quickly, and losing very little health. I also have Soul Skewer and Heavenward Lash on her.

Yeah there are a lot of things they could've done better, the pacing and map size for example, the map don't have to be overly large but having a more opened design with more routes would've helped, and I think the variety of enemies are good enough for this type of game, they just don't feel properly placed due to the length of it, like say running through an entire area you will most likely find 90% goblins and maybe a chimera until the night comes, you go back and it will be the same thing, not to mention the game forces you to backtrack, so throwing in more routes with better placed enemies would've kept the game fresh and keep the sense of danger up.

However even with some of the problems, they nailed a lot of things, they did try to mix things up, it just feels like some stuff came a little too late or could've paced/spread better

The series reaaally need to live with the same director on board and improve it the same way he did from DMC to DMC3, and since this is completely single player, they have no reasons not to scale the combat up.

Also Itsuno deserves more credits on his work, he's made a completely capable game and people are still shitting on him for "killing dmc"

I don't think i've ever played any other game that came even close (maybe some original Resident Evil ...) where the sense of danger was so real around every corner. Combine this with the fact that the game is completely free roam and something magical happens. It's literally the only gaming experience i've ever had where on what most games would consider the quick run home after adventuring it gets dark all of a sudden and turns into another adventure entirely... hearing that low lion growl or BIG wings flapping above you and not being able to see anything of the monster until it's jumping at your face... so amazing.

Said it once pages ago but this game perfectly recreates the child hood tension of being out at the park juuuuuuust before it gets dark. "There's enough time... it's not really dark .. probably gonna stay plenty light for another 30 minutes or so" only to find yourself outside in complete darkness 10 minutes later. I completely 2nd Amirox on this... Haven't played a game that made me this excited about GAMING since maybe GTA. And this is an entirely different beast... that I may just love more.

I really truly believe capcom has a gem on their hands here. Praying it gets a sequel and/or some truly epic DLC.

Christ, did I just initiate a point of no return? I
fell down a large hole and am now tasked with getting a ton of wake stones. How do I get out? All I can do is this chamber of confusion.

Can I get back to Gran Soren?

Yeah, just jump down the pit. You'll eventually hit a point where you reset from the top. Grab on the highest platform and you can run up to the pawn guild. Giving the wakestones trigger NG+, so avoid that until you're ready.

You can get out by either using a ferrystone or by jumping in the hole again. It loops over and over while falling through everfall. To get out, let it loop once and grab the first ledge on the right/upper right. There is a stair leading to the pawn guild.

I've been playing like 60 hours and I only just talked to the Duke last night lol.

<3 this game so much, fighting the Drake was epic.

I'm trying Magic Archer atm but I'm not liking it as much as Strider/Assassin yet, will try Ranger next as really, I didn't think I would (I usually don't in other games)....... but I love the archery in this game!

God's had his chance.
I hope they release some patches, add a new new game+ with scaled up enemies, I want to playthrough the main story again with higher tier enemies :(

I'm actually suprised at the level of ease at which i'm killing things in the post game that aren't in the Everfall. Like... I got beat up a little at first by dem hellhounds but beyond that it's kind of easy still. My 50+ levels of assassin stats probably don't hurt either ... but really, gouge goes through life bars like Whoa at night with all the boost skills set up. I finally got around to working on some fighter/warrior levels to up my strength a little for the HP/carrying weight bonus but i'm sure i'll be swapping back over to assassin as soon as my gifted twilight gear shows up :)

I can't wait to play assassin, been doing fighter mostly and capped strider and now I'm on warrior, heard assassin is a mix of all the melee classes so it's going to be fun
