Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Is there a way to open any of the locked/sealed doors in the everfall? I've cleared every floor. It feels incomplete or I missed something major.

@Papercuts: I totally agree. I've had more fun with this game than many others this year, but I'm finding that most of DD's ideas are far more interesting in theory than how they're actually implemented.

The world doesn't stay scary. Night doesn't stay scary. The Ur Dragon isn't executed as well as it could've been. Affinity is neat but not as transparent as it should be. NG+ is nice to see but ultimately a halfhearted bore for people who still seek a challenge. Restarting completely erases any of progress with a previous character, discouraging beginning again from scratch, etc.

Inconsistent is an apt word. DD could've been so much better than it already is. I would totally love a sequel to polish away all these rough edges.

I know there are lots of other games out there with overly scripted (practically unreplayable) campaigns that are meant to be consumed in two sittings and then tossed aside, but I wanted more out of DD. I know that it's unrealistic to demand an endless game (especially since DD is so generous already), but I felt like I got as much as I was going to get once I hit NG+. It didn't matter if I wanted to keep playing or not; I just felt like I was suddenly done. =\

Post game, sorry.

They re-use the same dungeon in a very poor fashion, they make it seem as if all of the dungeons are connected (it's just the same room with different enemies spawns) they close off doors to give it a labyrinth feel.

The doors dont have anything inside.

I figured as much. Too bad, it would be cool if they'd made it some kind of puzzle where you have to clear the floors in a specific order or something to unlock new areas. If the doors can't be opened they shouldn't be there. :/

Damn, being a Warrior is much more fun than a Mystic Knight. I like the weighty feel, and the strength of my blows are so satisfyingly bone-crunching.

What are the best looking Longswords for a Warrior? I've only got the Wounded Heart right now.

I like the warrior too, but they have too little skills and a complete lack of secondaries. I prefer mauls to the swords, smashing something with a giant spiked ball is so satisfying.

I've kind of gotten over this since a lot of the skills suck and Arc of Deliverance is so fucking tremendous that it's like 10 skills one.

Daggers and swords are the ones that really get screwed over, imo. They both have a ton of cool skills, but with only three slots you're really limited. A lot of the niche skills get shelved because they're just not worth it.

Arc of Deliverance is superb, but I'm not that big a fan. Too many times I aimed at a dragon's heart only for the game to auto adjust it to hit his arm or leg.

Agreed with daggers and swords, plenty of cool skills there, I think they really wanted us to switch around as and when the situation requires. I absolutely love the strider's flying kick into a helm splitter.

Anyone else tried fighting the offline Ur-dragon? I was fighting him with different classes to test the damage potential of each class. In a single round, got him down to the last bar with a mystic knight. Attempting with magic archer left him with 3 dots, partially because the 10 hit homing arrow thing really doesn't cut it when he's just down to one or two glowing spots. Gonna try with the other classes later.

Well I think I'm ready to finish the game, I've returned to all map locations in post game, been through the everfall multiple times and defeated the Ur Dragon twice (once offline).

Such an incredible game, it will be my goty almost guaranteed. The only other real contender right now is Darksiders 2 and I really don't see it surpassing this, as much as I will love the parkour and puzzle dungeons.

I love how real and alive the world feels, how everything looks dirty and lived in but still retaining color and natural beauty rather than being a morass of grey and filth like Skyrim and so many other "realistic" games. Gransys actually seems like a real place.

Decided to kill 2 birds with one stone tonight. I escorted Quina to the Prayer Falls and killed some female bandits for the male bandit leader, such a douche bag he is. Stumbled upon the female bandit camp and found a bow in there, everything was going fine, then I stumbled upon the leader and shit went ape, like about 50 women descended on my head so I bolted. One of my pawns told me the leader is a horrible misandrist when were fleeing thanks for telling me afterwards numb nuts.

Stumbled upon a cave on my way back that brought be right back out to Gran Soren, it looks like a covered well. I'm sorry, but this the best RPG I have played in years, it somehow eclipsed Human Revolution which is now holding the silver medal.

You can override the auto adjust by tilting in your desired direction. It makes a huge difference against things like dragons and armored cyclopes.

As for wanting us to switch skills around, I couldn't really. Kiss/Gouge for big enemies and Wind/Compass for groups of enemies meant that I only ever had one free slot.

Fighter got some really crap skills, there should've been more core skills for them, I was totally expecting a more effective taunt/shield drum that would enrage mobs but recover your stamina or something

What's everyones favorite monster design or favorite monster to fight?

I'd say the Evil Eye because he's the most creepiest and to fight, well that'd be the griffin. Just grabbing on and holding on for dear life. Such a good fight.

Any grabbable big monster works for me!

I'm not loving the ur-dragon though. Seems that since I made my character a magic user (mage-sorcerer-mystic knight-arcane archer) I'm destined to suck at this fight unlike everyone who raised their strength and made gouge assassins. Also gen 29 ur dragon is never going to die on xbox. Never.

Tried out the 70% damage increase at night augment and took down a Wyrm in about 15 seconds. lol

He dragonforged 3 pieces of gear for me as well, bless his pointed-little-head. :D

Now I'm trying to decide if I should continue Everfaming, or go on to NG+ with just my Arisen and main Pawn... I don't think I can put up with the Ur-Dragon. I've fought him thrice now and every time I go back he has another 2+ bars of health. I don't want to watch threads all day to see when he'll be near death.

At least I got the Ascalon sword for my first attempt.

Love fighting the Hydra. Pawns climbing up different heads, chopping away, myself on the ground launching flaming arrows at it. Then its heads are ripped off and it falls to the ground helpless while we all rush and attack that bitch, only to have it regenerate to start the ordeal over again. Good times.

I really enjoy playing as a Sorcerer on my NG+, but Golems suck as a Sorcerer. My damn pawns won't climb on the golem to attack its weak spots, and magic attacks do such miniscule damage to the thing that it becomes a chore to chip away at its health.

I love all the monster designs. They did an amazing job bringing these fantasy creatures to life and making them fit perfectly in the otherwise very realistic looking world. My favorite one to fight is probably the hydra, it's so fun and satisfying to climb up the necks and hack them off. The only one I really feel could have been done better is the cockatrice, they pretty much just stuck a different head on the gryphon model.

Yeah, the Hydra is my favorite.

I had hoped that if you severed all 4 heads and seared them with fire that you could kill it much faster, but no such luck, they regenerate anyway.

I did get swallowed whole once, though. Slowly being moved down the throat while my Fighter Pawn desperately hacked away to free me!

Wow, only level 12, but this game is so good. Went to Gran Soren to respec from strider to magic archer and liking that one more at the moment. The quest to Gran Soren was amazing. It became night while I was in the middle of it and I have almost never seen a video game suddenly turn so exciting. Narrowly made it. Then I went back to the beginning to do some sidequests. Went back into the cave under the well and it was time for easy payback (as a magic archer compared to strider).

I have a question regarding on of the quests in the beginning. I have to look for a thief.
The NPC tells me to speak to two other shopkeepers - I do so. Then he tells me to wait in his store until the thief comes and I chase him. I do so, but no thief ever appears. I tried again by blindly running around the village, but no thief in sight. Where is the thief?

Also I have a lvl 12 fighter pawn (scather/mitigator) who performs quite well so far. Are those two inclinations a good combo, or should I try for scather/challenger?

PSN is illynator if anyone else is new to the game and looking for a very low lvl pawn.

I was looking into sharing my pawn and its only possible via giving my PSN or twitter or facebook? WTH?

I spotted him by running up and down the road from the inn to the stairs leading to the church, along the marketplace. He seems to just run along a set path, so if you're patient he should show up eventually.

I've gone for Scather/Challenger on both my pawns, but I'm thinking that Scather/Mitigator might be better since they won't have to worry about chasing dudes. You can just take care of the archers/casters yourself.

I'm lvl 28 now and starting to wonder when I'll find some nice gear. I've had the same hodgepodge outift pretty much since level 5 or so and though I've upgraded it, I'd really like new stuff.

I bought the DLC weapons because I got tired of my broadsword, but none of them are as good as my lvl 3 broadsword until they are leveled up and you need really rare items to do that. (10 direwolf pelts, 10 freakish manes, griffon pinion, etc)

Is there a good quest I should look for at this level that has some nice gear? Or at least someplace to find those items to level up my dlc weapons? Thanks in advance.

Direwolf pelts aren't hard to come by. Exit out of Gran Soren via the gate next to the field, follow the road by the river and cross the bridge, keep going down the road straight ahead (following the coast) until you come to a large waycastle (Windbluff Tower). Orient yourself so you're facing away from the entrance to the waycastle and go straight ahead, a little to the left. This area is filled with direwolves but there is also a Chimera lurking about so be careful (Chimeras drop freakish manes though so you might want to take it on). Remember though that you only need 1 of each item, you can make forgeries of the other 9 at the Black Cat in Gran Soren.

Gryphon pinions are dropped by gryphons, you'll encounter one as part of the main story.

Just ordered this game for PS3 (hope it isnt a lot worse than 360)

Any advice or tips for a newb?
The PS3 version is fine, no issues here. The learning curve is a bit high and you need to get used to the gameplay mechanics, so just do a lot of side-quests and explore a lot.

I just learned the other night that you can hack off materials from big monsters(cyclops tusks, wyrm horns, etc.) after they die.
So that's how you get a Cockatrice's beak. :lol

Caxton's Armory gets new gear to sell at various points in the main quest, and you can also do a sidequest at one point to add even more stuff. The main quest will also send you to dungeons with decent amounts of loot.

Has anyone else had the innkeeper disappear in Gran Soren in NG+ after talking to guy at the rest area by the healing spring? If so, any luck getting him to show back up? I've entered and exited the city multiple times, waited for about 3 minutes in the actual inn to see if he needed to just pop in, and rested for 3 days at the inn in the fort.

I couldnt figure that quest for a while, i thought thief was gonna break in to shop and i waited there lol.

There is a tip, if thief is close to you some upbeat chasing music starts to play and it gets louder as you get closer to thief.

You need to talk to the innkeeper again and it will automatically change to night time. If you just wait in the inn he won't spawn.

Stand just outside the inn and they will eventually run by. You've got to knock them off their feet and then grab them. You can chase them around the town if you miss the first time. Best place to herd him is to the left of the inn as you are standing at the door looking out. There is a grassy ridge next to a ruined building, they will run there and then back the way they came. Wait for them to come back out once you see them go that way and then nail em!

What's up with Skill Stifling? I have some gear on my mage now that is the best stat wise besides it bringing me down to -29% skill stifling.

I'm not entirely sure what that stat is about.

Skill Stifling is like Silence for physical skills. It shouldn't do anything to your mage, afaik.

Thanks guys. I made the mistake of waiting inside...

Ran around and bumped into him by accident. The hectic music and him popping out of nowhere nearly gave me a heart attack... managed to grab him though.

Is there a way to cancel / pause side quests without any repercussions? I got a quest from the mission board in the starting village to escort someone to a place south-west~ish from grand soren. When I made it my current quest the guy appeared from thin air. I got there 1/4-1/3 of the way but I'm not sure if, at level 13ish, I can make it through the legions of wolves and bandits.

Can I drop him off at the encampment, a village (and take him with me later) or can I cancel/retake the quest?

Sadly there is no way to place, tell an escort to stay or lose them. You have to go back to Notice Board and cancel it.

Also out of all my escort quests. I did a ton, none ever died, until.....Selene got Lightning one shotted by a Chimera out of the blue, turned off immediately and went to bed last night/this morning.

Weapon stat question:

My pawn is a Strider who has two sets of daggers available:

Scalding Razors (2 stars)- Strength 268, Magick 385

Saurian Bane (3 stars)- Strength 304, Magick 161

Seems to me the Scalding Razors should be the ones to have equipped, right? The 385 magick comes from fire damage that they deal in addition to the 268 regular damage, right?

I'm just questioning it because those Saurian Bane daggers were DLC. You'd think DLC weapons would be top-tier but maybe not? I don't know.
