Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Eppy Thatcher

God's had his chance.
The thing is the NPC missions really flesh out the game world, and it doesn't seem random when certain things occur, and sometimes you cause them occur. I always wondered what happened if you paid the moving expenses for that family in Gran Soren. Did they just vanish and if so where will they go? Also I understand how Madel got money to open her shop, and I got to see a nice cutscene of my pretty boy assassin being a Snake wall hugger lol.

Also how could you miss the floral delivery quest at Cassardis with huge green question mark floating over the ladies head?

I just don't understand how Itsuno could let the quest structure out the door like that. Its like it was rushed out.

LoL .. see i paid the moving expenses and they never left the field. They were simply nicer to me when I walked by. Also.. for whatever reason (even after paying for the not guilty forgery) Fournival was sentenced guilty in my game. I listened to the verdict and was honestly kind of suprised like... wtf. I could of swore I made him innocent. Fuck.

And LoL.. I missed EVERYTHING until i was on my way to Gran Soren basically. I ran directly out of Cassardis without even looking into a house or building. Didn't look for any chests or anything and heard plenty of people remark that there was like 20k worth of stuff and gold if you looked for it in the first city. I did a double take when people started talking about these quests. I only learned about them after i was done with the Hunt quests and talking to the duke. Realized I had obviously missed my chance and said fuck it. Also never got a quest for Witchwood involving the golems and in fact never even SAW any golems in there. Ran all over looking for stuff and secrets and not a one.

It's kind of odd but at the same time I love it how different this game comes along for different people.

Still need to 3 star a bunch of equipment including my Fey Whisper and my Carnation ... Having some serious trouble finding some of the crafting items for these higher tier weapons. Can anyone point me in the right direction for those 2 items? and also... if anyone wants to send me anything twilight I'm gonna change my pawn back to strider tonight for any kind souls that may be into gifting gear ;)

Yeah, I mean, there are A LOT of ways to add difficulty to a game when it's completed. You can add new areas/dungeons that are only accessible post game with more difficult enemies/challenges (which is what like every RPG does). As I mentioned already, you can make selectable difficulty levels. A buddy of mine suggested that in Dragon's Dogma there could have been unique, tougher leader enemies that have a small chance of appearing in certain troops/packs on the field. Like take the wolf packs for example, maybe there's a small percent chance of there being a flaming cerberus in the pack. This flaming dog could drop something really good and rare too. This way there is always a threat or reason to retread old areas.

The thing you DON"T want to do is have everything scale to you. There are sooooo many ways to increase difficulty for a player. Just auto scaling or auto forcing the player into a hard difficulty is just bad, in my opinion. I'm usually good with an RPG if there is always something to strive for. There's got to be a reason (usually an impossible boss) for gaining levels, finding better gear, learning all the skills, etc. I haven't gotten to post game yet in this game, but isn't the UR-Dragon the mega challenge in this game?

That's an awesome idea.

Also... yeah scaling sucks dick, and that's not what I'm advocating.

no, you didn't - sorry... but what i'm saying still stands - that they went for something different, which just didn't work for you, personally...

What I'm saying is that I don't understand who this system works for? How long can you play a game like this where there are absolutely no threats to you before you become bored? I honestly dont understand the design decision of creating a 199 level cap but doing nothing to maintain any challenge.

What story?

D+ during the first 80%, A- the next 20%.

Agreed. I restarted halfway through NG+ and haven't looked back since. You think you'll miss your high-level loot, but you really don't. If you're desperate, you could always set up a complex trade-back scheme with fellow players, but personally I enjoy using the jank weapons. Gives me something to strive towards.

At the end of the day, the cincher was my pawn. Lower-level, new players will get more use out of my pawn that solo-run assassins farming loot in the Everfall.

I'm going to start another game with a solo mage... will report back here later with the results, lol.

I can't believe how many shit I've missed, I ran to dragonforged to decipher this tablet and walked to that Windbluff Tower and Ser Daerio or whatever the fuck gave me a quest, aweome.

I don't want to sound "casual" but I think quests are a bit too easy to miss in this game. One of my only complaints, really. I don't need quests to appear brightly on my notice board for me to do them. Just get rid of the deadlines - they really serve no purpose as far as I can tell.

the quest and equipment structure is pretty bad.

still though, the game has it's drawbacks, but for an open world game and the first try i'd say they did a damn good job compared to other similar games that are completely broken or just boring.

Yeah I just don't think it presented itself very well, I don't have any problems with missable quests, but the thing is that DD doesn't have a lot of questlines for you to choose from

it works for people attempting to go with different classes &/or fewer/no pawns. i know you don't like this, but there it is...

Indeed, you can miss out on some pretty major quests. One notable quest, "Duchess in Distress", contains cinematics and pivotal character moments, but it's only available during the brief period of time between the Duke assigning you the Greatwall expedition and going to the Tainted Mountain. These two quests are directly side-by-side, and the Duke makes the expedition quest to be of top priority, but the only way to get "The Duchess in Distress" is to ignore his directive and fart around for hours before going on this very important mission.

The most maddening part is that the quest is still available after you complete the Expedition, but it cancels itself the moment you accept it because you missed the "deadline". If I can't do the quest, why is it still being offered? I hesitate to call DD's quest system broken, as you can complete every quest if you know exactly when they're available, but it's undeniably obtuse and unfriendly.

I could understand a system that shuts out access to certain quests based on decisions you've made, but realistically the only way to complete every quest in the game is to explore every single backwater containing NPCs, not once, but after every quest you complete and every level-up. With no system of convenient fast travel, it doesn't quite work out. You really need to know exactly when these quests are happening to save a lot of wasted time. I think it needs work in the sequel.

hunh? my post was regarding new game+ (& 'challenge' or lack thereof), not the quest system :) ...

What kinds of pawns do you all look for? What vocation would you prefer to use in your party? I'm figuring out which build I should go for.

I always go with a support mage, I like buffs/debuffs and heals :p, then it's just 2 damage dealer, which I don't really care who, usually a sorcerer and a ranger/warrior

Right now I'm levelling sorcerer (ugh) but when I switch back to Magick Knight it'll be:

Me: Magick Knight
Main pawn: Ranger
Pawn 1: Mage
Pawn 2: Fighter

This is a great setup because it means I can destroy everything while I have 3 pawns to watch, clap and give me useful information like it being a fine scrap, even if he does say so himself.

Man I am so sick of playing this fucking prologue.

I just started a new game as a mage character to see how it felt solo... well as I was rushing through the beginning stuff I forgot to save Reynard!

Ugh!

Now I have to do it all again! And I can't remember my settings for the character I just made, which I really like. What a friggin' bummer man.

I really hate that escort quest from the Waycastle to Gran Soren. The mule is so slow!

Yeah that one is kind of a bummer too, after the tenth time. I also don't like how my progression is forced in the early game... like having to do witchwood before the escort.

The thing about Reynard, is this it isn't fair! I turned right out of the village to jump down and get the chest and gold... so I never actually saw or heard him cry for help. So I'm basically punished for exploring a bit and not immediately walking down the path. Had I not played this part a dozen times already, I'd have no idea I missed something important. I mean he is pretty important and it;s possible to miss him right out of the gate. Not fair, and I wonder how many other things I will miss because I walked one direction over another, and not have any indication of my mistake.

Kind of bullshit. I really love this game but stuff like this is annoying. I think once you play the prologue you should be able to skip it for new characters.

That ending credits.

pretty much every part of this game is outsourced to some different company, so many outsourced contractors.

I backed up my save before finishing the game lol, now it's time to go back to that save, in your face Capcom :p

37 Mystic Knight (was an archer of various sorts for 1-36).
37 Sorcerer main pawn, who started as a mage
42 Fighter or Warrior (no shield) pawn
37 Mage (for heals) pawn

I might swap the warrior pawn for a bow guy since I'm tanking now.

After starting with fighter then switching to warrior, ranger is amazingly fun to play as. I found warrior really underwhelming mostly due to how slow many of the moves are. Connecting with the upgraded Arc of Might move (or whatever it's called), however, is pretty satisfying. Switching from that to a class with fast and effective melee + ranged moves is quite the upgrade.

What are the best skills to learn and use for the Warrior class? Anyone got any suggestions?

Also, is there any real point to being a Fighter after unlocking other classes? Is the Magic Knight just flat out better than a Fighter?

Bluuuhhhh i realized i posted earlier and went to play then went to sleep and absolutely forgot to leave my psn/pawn name while i was begging. I'm so bad. My PSN is Seven_Legends, pawn name is Twilight and if anyone could toss a Sultry Paero on her it would make all of my days.

That said i'm about to beat Ur dragon offline for the first time! Wish me luck! hope i get the sword. Took about 3 runs.

Fighter: Sinew - 5 - 2,800 - Carry weight +10 kg
Warrior: Impact - 8 - 8,000 - Improves knockdown power
Warrior: Clout - 9 - 10,000 - Strength +20%
Strider: Eminence - 5 - 2,200 - Jump attack damage +30%
Fighter: Vehemence - 8 - 6,000 - Strength increased by +10%
Assassin: Bloodlust - 4 - 2,400 - Strength/Magic +70% and Defenses +30 at Night

Warrior jump attacks are great--and the jump+X is the fastest single-target swing you can get out of that class as the regular attack is the slow AOE swing.

Awesome, thanks! I actually meant the 3 actual attack skills (don't know what they are specifically called in the game), but this info is probably even more useful.

Arc of Might/Deliverance and Savage/Indomitable Lash are great boss killers. For regular enemies, I prefer using the augment that increases core skill damage and just smacking the shit out of stuff with standing light attacks and jumping heavy attacks.

Spark/Corona Slash are good for knocking light enemies down, but the damage is abysmal.

Escape Slash/Exodus Slash give you invincibility frames. Really good for a class that has no other defense.

of course it stops mattering by the time you're level 30 as you just become a tank.

Do Warrior pawns reliably use their jump attack enough to warrant spending an augment slot on Eminence?

I've noticed that Warrior Pawns use the jump attack a lot, so I'd say yes.

Corona Slash - 6 - 2,800 - A broader sweep
Whirlwind Slash - 4 - 1,500 - Foes launched with greater force
Pommel Bash - 4 - 1,500 - Stuns tougher enemies

You have no idea man. After every quest, its walk around a check for me, which is insane. I just save at Gran Soren, check the entire NPC areas and if there is nothing interesting to find quest wise I just load over. I was a staunch non-fast travel supporter, but now I understand the complaints. Ideally for me, I could care less about fast travel, just make a competent quest system and I wouldn't need it.

In any case, still loving the game.

Definitely. They're related to the ending, so I suggest beating the game first, then looking up what triggers those Trophies at the end.

Ic, thanks I'll keep an eye on this.

My pawn is currently mage, going to back sorcerer afterwards. Gonna max rank all of the vocations.
I'm thinking about either making him Warrior/Ranger depending on what people look for more in a pawn.

If anyone wants to add for future pawn use:
PSN: itzknickknac,
Pawn: Leonidas,
Currently: mage, lvl 47

Sometimes I play this game just to take cool screenshots... I wish every console game had this feature.

edit: this might be a little controversial... but I despise the game's theme song. it's just so obnoxious when I'm trying to load a game or whatever and I have the headphones on. it's perfectly fine until the rock kicks in...

Sometimes I play this game just to take cool screenshots... I wish every console game had this feature.

This is the only game in a loooong time where almost everytime I play something happens that I think "godamn.. i need to show that off" and for the most part, i can.

A part of me wants to go buy a capture device for my tv. Jumping from one Chimera that was in it's dieing animation onto the head of another chimera only to continue the stabbing session is something that i would probably not believe until I saw it... but it happened. And it was glorious.

got a shot of my entire team except for my support mage crawling all over a cockatrice a few days ago. It kept trying to take off .. would hover for a moment then lethargically slump back to the ground to try for another running start. I was laughing. (hate those godamn turkeys)

Oh my god i finally beat urdy

I had to fight him 3 more times because i didn't realize i could just hit his face for his last little bit of health which was like, 5 hits. Damn that was satisfying. Too bad I got a heaven's key :< I want the sword badly since i don't like daggers that much.
