Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

i really wish we could just make them into the specialized hybrid classes, like Assassin, Magic Archer, etc. That was a bizarre and nonsensical oversight, imo

I think the game might have issues with some of them though. Take Mystic Knight: the cannon spell is hard enough to use when the enemy is circling around you; I can't imagine the AI being able to do that as shoddy as it already is.

I'm currently level 27. I didn't do much : I just travelled here and there, not very far from Gran Soren. Actually, I've been able to go on the other side of the quarry. I found a camp (thank you anonymous pawn for your hint that there was one), and I stumbled on a wyrm... With tons of Hobgoblins... Suffices to say, I've been croaked.

And now I have the same deal, with a manticore and a legion of saurians.

Why do you hate me game ?!

As for the sequel (I'm pretty sure we'll get one sooner or later) what I would really like to see is a weather elements and the seasons. I'm not sure if it's possible to make the seasons real time but they could be trigger by some of the story elements. I think it would make all the location fresh for a longer time if we could travel them during summer, fall, spring and winter.
As for the rest I wouldn't take away anything from the game , I would keep all the gear and just make small changes in the look and stats and of course add more new gear to it, that way we would have a bigger and better selection of things to wear and fight with. Same thing with the game world, I would keep the land we have now and add more to it, let's say another land of the same size. I think it would be pretty nice to visit old location with the weather and season elements and new creatures, find some new places there and venture for the new world. It something that would really make a game a lot bigger with much less work.
As for the new vacation, I would like to see a class that fights with spears and halabards, maybe some savage class that fights with throwing weapons like small axes and knives etc. And of course would keep all the ones we have now and make some changes to them, so they can feel fresh again.

Pawn AI is the big problem.

It basically made archers useless since some specialized functions (hitting discs, aiming for dragon hearts, aiming for the metal rods) are pointless because the AI was not built to discern which of these things was important.

Also, a sequel really needs to cool it with the magic effects. They really got right in the way of the camera.

Good God. This game is expansive. I just finished the quest for Fidel and ended up on the other side behind the female bandit Fort to a whole new area. Ridiculous and Fantastic at the same time. Found some place where guys were guarding it and bought some Grypic Arms guards for my Fighter pawn and then warped the hell out of there.

When am I going to start getting really cool armor? I really like how Julien is dressed, he looks awesome and I'm attempting to go for a similar look with my Pawn but its just been garbage all around. Even after giving Claxton the Golden Idol, the Berserk stuff is so-so I only bought the White Cape, and the Gryphics chest plate and Legs looks horrible, when will I get amazing looking loot for my pawn?

Another question is I have a notice board quest; to get a similar badge from Ophis that Maul gave me, the only question is. How will I even talk to this woman and she hates men and starts an all out riot?

I'm facing difficulties against some monsters... First it was Ogres, but switching to 1 Mage + 1 Sorcerer pawns helped. But now, with 1 Mystic Knight (me), 1 Ranger, 1 Mage and 1 Sorcerer I can't stand my ground against a lot of ennemis in the open ground (such as the ridiculously massive bands of brigands near the Fort in the southern aera).

So... What should I do ? Completly change my team ? Switch class to Hunter/Magic Archer (the arcanic canon isn't very effective) ? Find new and better equipment (I'm level 28, but I haven't been able to find some really powerful items - I guess I have to do wyrm hunts in order to unlock some ?) ?

Note : My character never-ever was a Mage or Sorcerer. So, I guess I'm falling behind in terms of Magic stat. Is the Magic Archer still viable ?

Also : How am I supposed to destroy a cyclop's helm ? I faced 2 of them so far, and I haven't been able to get rid of their helmet.

Dress in women's clothing.

Also, don't do her quest. Talk to her, then talk to the woman outside the gate.

If you take Ophis' quest, she's going to ask you to slaughter some of Maul's men, and that will aggro them to you every time you go near that castle.

Yeah, the A.I. is pretty shoddy, but that shouldn't stop us from deciding that it would be better with the option. it would be better definitely imo

Well, 4 assassins at night time would be an overkill for everything, or 4 Mystic Knights using Great Cannon, geez, I don't think that game could handle that, it can't handle one cannon not to mention 4 lol

Maybe, but part of the appeal of games like this is figuring out how best to exploit things legitimately. If you work hard to get four assassins, let the people have it. It's not like this is a competitive game, not in any real sense. Also sometimes people want to test out new classes without risking the main character being a weak pos, since he's always your main line of assault.

My pawn (ranger) takes a golem out by herself... You habe to show them how it works!

I dunno about the other stuff, but you can get rid of cyclopes' helmets by climbing on their upper back. They'll try to grab you and knock the helmet off in the process.

Do what now!? I know Madeline sells female only clothes, but I can't equip them naturally...

And, I don't mind slaughtering some of Mauls dudes, he made me kill some of her girls. So old testament time I guess...and eye for an eye....

Also if you're an archer if you shoot the Tusks and break them, the Cyclops throws the helmet off. I feel bad for some of the monsters in the game. My stomach literally sank when a little Goblin fell on his back and was looking up at me begging for his life, with his hand raised like he was saying. No, please....No. Some others however they piss me off, I was in the curse wood and was fighting Bandits, Chimera and a Skull Knight at the same time.

You can buy a woman's dress in The Black Cat.

Yeah, my pawn ranger took forever to take out a metal golem on the first attempt (and then was petrified by a wight and smashed into nothing by the golem on a second attempt :lol), but after getting that monster experience she wiped out the high ones pretty quickly after I broke all of the lower ones. Intentionally broken AI "learning" seems like a great idea until you run into that situation.

Julien's gear will be a DLC bonus at some point, mark my words.

I'd be ok with #2.

I wouldn't.
The combat mechanics make Dragon's Dogma and that's one thing the West has forever been unable to get right. Also chances are high Capcom would look to some z-tier developer.
Seriously? An ex-Morrowind dude? The only know-how I'd want from him would involve world-building and little else. Morrowind is a mess of a game.

You didn't actually have to take the maul's quest to kill female bandits

If you did the Cassardis innkeeper's quest beforehand, you can send him back a traitor and no one has to die.

Lol I know, I caught the Thief back in Cassardis, but I wasn't sure what Maul would have done to him. He seems to want to turn his life around, and he's helping out the Inn Keeper, every man deserves a second chance to turn himself around, especially from a criminal existence. So I chose to kill the female bandits.

The result if you sent him back:
Maul decides to spare him because he came back a man repentant for running away.

Reviewers are always terrible, I honestly don't know how people trust them at this point knowing what we in the hardcore gaming community knows about what goes on behind closed doors at these websites and publications. it's truly shameless stuff; there is no objectivity.

That's not to say you couldn't legitimately criticize Dragon's Dogma and find it lacking, I certainly know of several areas that could stand to be fixed (even if it didn't mean as much to me as it maybe does to someone else), but I certainly would not give a fuck at what metacritic says. Decide for yourselves, not with paid corporate shills.

Last I saw DD was around a 77 on Metacritic. Honestly, that's not too far from where I'd land it. I want so much to give it the highest praise possible because the things it does well, it does REALLY well. The combat is so good...the exploration/world is so vast...the pawn system is incredible and unique.

But I can't sit here and say that it wasn't incredibly tedious backtracking over, and over, and over, and over. Its fast-travel system was dumb. The story is so incredibly pointless , boring, and non-existent for most of the game...yet it does conclude spectacularly; I only wish it had had that revelation and charm sprinkled through more of the game. Characters are dull and lifeless. Pawns' dialogue were so irritating...the same thing over and over and over.

It is a flawed gem in my eyes. No doubt it is a very memorable game, but I don't think the Metacritic average was that insulting. I'd probably give it an 8/10 personally.

It did really deserve to sell more, though. A game like this is begging for a sequel.

I thought the fast travel system was dumb, but when I gave it some more thought, I realized why it was the way it was.

The point of the game is to constantly feel in danger. You're supposed to start expeditions during the day and be scared at night. The problem is that you get way too strong too fast, lanterns burn oil like the amish use iPads, and enemies are always going to be in pre-set places (save for a bit of wandering on the parts of chimeras).

Early on in the game, I nearly lost my shit because I remember seeing what looked like two cyclopes in the distance at night, then the two eyes looked at me, the head growled, and it flapped its wings and took off. I ran like hell to the tents past a wave of goblins and slept until morning.

That was awesome but it becomes much less harrowing when I can kill anything with arrows.

The game is trying to force moments like that on you by making you walk back, but you outstrip its oppressiveness relatively early on.

Well-said. Very good points.

I agree - when I started and I got to Gran Soren I immediately took on an escort quest and I had no idea what I was getting into. It took me 2 solid in game days and nights to just get the person to the destination, and it was incredibly tense and exhilarating. I felt like I had actually been on a journey. Now that I'm a much higher level, I can walk through most enemies I encounter without too much trouble at all, and I have enough cash on me at all times to load up on as many travel stones as I want -so I guess it kind of evens out. That being said, I still wouldn't mind some form of fast travel to get between Cassardis and Gran Soren.

I'm obviously missing something as I haven't used it yet. Is there a quick explanation somewhere?

In the main game, you can get one portstone and very expensive but more common ferry stones to warp you to Gran Soren. You can lay the port stone anywhere and it will also be an option to warp to.

In the NG+, you get unlimited numbers of portstones but they're about 200k a pop.

i finished the valmiro quest line and now
he loves me. i lowered his affinity after the first quest, because he was blushing, but that wasn't enough apparently. now it says max. affinity with male chars: 1 in the statistics. i think i'm fucked.

it's weird the affinity with all female chars i got previously never got wiped from my first playthrough, now i'm not sure who will get priority. i try to get quina to max for this one and mercedes. not sure if quina isn't already maxed though.

As I stated before. I was a defender of lack of fast travel, because I still and do understand what atmosphere the game is trying to instill in the player by making everything feel like a trek. I have no problem with that.

I have no problem with enemy placements being the same ( I get random moments/ambush's ) that break that. I have no problem with the distance, no problem with the Lantern oil. My problem with lack of fast travel is the broken quest system.

In a game where Quests can be unlocked, cancelled, shifted in the blink of an eye and you have no idea where they will pop up without using a guide is down right insane, using Guides is so spoiler"ish".

So far I have been doing a pretty good job I think. I structure my Notice board quests, Escort quests and even some NPC given quests so that I can be radial, and span nearby locations and kill as many birds with one stone as I can, and so far it has not failed me as yet.

haha, now in my third playthrough, i have 11 people with max affinity, 7 females... :lol

I reluctantly agree. I remember night in this game being hyped as this oppressive force that you'd want to avoid at all costs - that enemies would be stronger and spawn indefinitely. But you're right, at about lv.25-30, you get to that point where nothing is really a threat anymore. Hell, most high-level players run builds where they're stronger at night, so what's the point? I appreciate the utter darkness of it - the atmosphere is spot on - but past a certain level night in DD may as well be night in Skyrim or Amalur. Just cosmetic.

My strategy with "undesirable" NPCs is to simply kick them until they don't like me anymore. I kicked Madeleine in the stomach and she no longer likes me - the guards didn't even care. It sucks with NPCs like Valmiro or the Duchess, who disappear from the world at the end of their quests, so there's nothing you can do to lower their affinity.

That system is so broken. So very broken.

As near as I can figure, the following quests will get you max affinity whether you want it or not:

Duchess in Distress, Bad Business (if you give her the daggers and lie to the guards), and Valmiro's Goodbye. I think Aelinore takes priority over the rest. Some quests that will probably give you max affinity but also likely not take priority are Witch Hunt and Reynard's Business quest. It's strange that Selene is not a more common option because her ending dialogue (all two lines of it) is probably the best explanation for what actually happens.

I think to some extent, the reason I'm really liking this game is because it's the most approachable RPG in some time. The premise had a fairly simple yet captivating charm to it that just totally clicked with me, while some other RPG's that are so in love with it's own story it will often try and clobber me with a heavy handed story.

Capcom has something special here and to scrap it all for an attempt at a quick cash grab by making it more like Skyrim or any other western RPG would be an absolute travesty.

I can't remember the last time I played an RPG where choices in a quest had me hesitate to turn things in or do certain things. After spending years on the Blizzard Quest theme park roller coaster, it's great to have some quests not play out the way I expect them to.

Doesn't giving Arisen's Bond lock the favoured NPC for the game cycle?

PS. Fuck you Valmiro, NG++ because of you!

I hate how there's that jingle sound every time I talk to Asolom or whatever the innkeeper's name is at Gran Soren. Very awkward that he starts blushing and crap and I didn't even give him any presents.
