Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Man, I tell you, there were two super annoying things in this game. I didn't dislike them, just they were so fucking annoying

1. The way hellhounds drag the fuck out of you if you get knocked over. FUCK you Hell hounds, get the fuck off my shirt bitches!
2. The way that asshole does the SUPER ELBOW COMBO in that one mission in the post-game in the Pawn Encampment. You move up on him and sometimes he does like a six-to-nine elbow combo in a row, in which you are almost entirely helpless. I just arrowed that jerk in the face after a while, 'cause his elbow shit felt a little like the way people used to do leg sweep cheesing back in the day

I love the Hellhounds. They made me afraid of venturing out in the world like in the beginning of the game. So freaking hard, made me wear the ring that ups flame protection for the first time in the game.

The #1 thing I hate is, without a doubt, the repeating dialogues throughout the game. The random repeated pawn chatter & especially the merchants.
I'm going to the merchants/inn after returning from every fight & they repeat the same damn thing for each & ever single menu option & when you back out from them.

How doable is it? I remember jumping down the well with just my pawn and shit got really real when I got knocked over and lantern going out, going alone against the rest of the world would give me nightmares, but at the same time it sounds fascinating...
KuGsj.gif

It's perfectly doable. I'm level 45 already, and I haven't even met the duke. You'll level very very quickly, because you'll actually gain almost double xp compared with a 4 man team, but the challenge is still there. With the assassin augments I can tear enemies apart quickly, but one wrong step and I get swamped, and I'm screwed. I'm also going to try maxing all the vocations, I'm on sorcerer now.

The hardest part is the starting section before reaching gran soren. Don't start with mage, it makes things infinitely harder.

Try the tutorial stage without any pawn to get a feel of how fun it can be.

Does reviving people do anything? I revived
julien after I killed him when he fought the commander lady but nothing interesting happened yet

Go back to Gran Soren and speak with him inside his jail cell. You'll need a Skeleton Key to enter his cell. He'll then give you his shield - Wizard's Vizard.

The merchants are grating, but I've grown to love the chatter from my main pawns. I especially appreciated it in my duo playthrough since it would have been so quiet otherwise.

Ah, ok. I'm level 37 right now, would that be enough?

I did it in the late 40s or early 50s so i guess you can do it. The way to the dragon is harder than the dragon itself. I was an archer, so the dragon was fairly easy...

Some leveling up shouldn't be wrong i guess...

The hardest thing about that fight was
I couldn't figure out how to hit it as a fighter, I still don't, lol, I did it by just climbing its belly and stabbing it but the climbing took forever and definitely looked reeeeeally wrong, also letting my pawn did all the work

Seems that you don't have to forge anything to get Fournival off. I went the forgery route first time round, but in NG+ I'd already completed Reynard's quest so he was basically gone from the world.

Other main difference was
I'd also already done "An Innocent Man" and despite the ex-Gardener's testimony looking like it would contribute towards a guilty verdict, it seems like that, Ser Daerio's man's testimony, plus Feval (? dodgy noble who gives you the quest to get the package back), Geffrey and Symone's affadavits will do the job. It certainly makes the comments made by the quest vendor dude afterwards, make a lot more sense

Today I woke and looked outside again
But the sky looked the same to me
Something told me that this world had changed
Couldn't figure out what did it mean

Some say to get out fast, looks like it's gonna last
Get all your things and fly (DON'T LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND)
Some said it'll be OK, just go ahead and stay
Be sure to drink your iodine

The wind is pushing me, into the clouds again
I feel the blood in my veins
Time is running free, I feel like letting go
Just like the Dangan

Staring out to the hourglass inside
My mind is racing and wild
Blinded by eyes that cover up the facts
Uncertainty with all the cracks in a smile

I'm breathing life or death, are we making progress?
Not really sure this time (THE CHOICE IS YOURS AND MINE)
Not sure what to do next, no real test reflex
Can't touch or see with my own eyes

The wave is pushing me, into the current again
I feel the blood in my veins
Time is running free, I feel like letting go
Nothing to slow me down
Dragon inside of me, I feel it letting go
I can't hear not a sound
Flying into free, I hit the mother lode
I am the Dangan

The wave is pushing me, into the current again
I feel the blood in my veins
Diving into free, can feel it letting go
Not gonna hit the ground
The sky is painted free, why can't we understand
We kill ourselves in the end
It's simple as one, two, three, it's written in the sand
We are the Dangan

Terrible! I mash the buttons to get out of the main screen to avoid hearing that lol.

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
Can I mess anything up by doing the
behind the waterfall temple thing
before the hydra head escort?

The dragging was annoying, but what really annoyed me was when they would always time the fire-blast to be right when my dashing sword stab was about to make contact.

I just turned in the three petitions that help to acquit Fournival found right in Gran Soren itself, and kept any that condemn him. Only other thing I did was visit the keep to the north and escorted the witness back to Gran Soren which was super easy. When I left the castle after turning in those 4 pieces of evidence, my pawns even stated "I think we have enough evidence to ensure his innocence now." Never had to visit Reynard at all, and Fournival was found innocent. Quest took about 30 minutes, and I just rested at the inn for three days in a row to fast forward to the trial date.

I only imagine people would need to visit Reynard if they accidentally dumped off conflicting evidence reports and want to ensure the trial goes one way or the other.

Agreed. Fire blast spamming was FAR more annoying than the hellhound dragging. I did play a Ranger though, so I rarely found myself even close to the hellhounds and was only dragged about on rare occasions, but those fireballs they shoot are punishing and constant.

What!! You were supposed to give Daerio the Ambrosia meat?! Oh my God! I kept them, forged one. So that I would have 6. I gave one to Valmiro when it turned sour, then I Airtight Flasked the other 5 when they turned sour for a notice board quest! AHHH!!

The lack of fast travel at least to townsl is REALLY diminishing my enjoyment of the game. At the very least they could give you three port crystals instead of just one, it's such a gigantic waste of time. Dark Souls had shortcuts and bonfire portals. Having such a crappy way to navigate the world is pathetic. There's definitely no way i'm buying this game after i'm done with my rental. Can't wait to run all the way back to the Bluemoon Tower!

Lol. You should have placed one PC at the tower, but of course there's no way you would have known on your first playthrough anyway.

Yeah, there's some design issues like this which many people aren't fond of.

right when i got the PC i tried placing it wouldn't let me. I later read that you can't put them in towns? I only have one too atm, level 33. It's just a thing that makes me think people designing games don't actually like playing video games.

they have to be put in the field from what I can tell. you can pick them up and move them around too.

i was so apprehensive about using the PC on my first playthrough, i used it in the last few quests thinking i would get another.

Need a little advice/info on the vocation system. So, I started as a Fighter, and have leveled it up to the 9th level. Why would I want to change vocation? What advantages does that bring? How does this system work?

Also, what should I change to, Assassin or Mystic Knight (leaning Assassin, I like to be lighter on my feet)?

Augments carry over to all the other vocations allowing you to mix and match to get your ideal setup. Also, if there's any skill overlap between the classes, you don't have to repurchase them.

Assassin and Mystic Knight are both powerful classes, you can't go wrong.

Mystic Knight gets my vote. Ruinous Sigil & Great Cannon are crazy good. Assassin has alot of good augs.

A lot of stuff from Fighter will carry over to either.

I've only been a low level strider and near max assassin so far but assassin is pretty cool. I like the double jump and roll abilities at least. The actual dagger moves are so-so at this point though I haven't bought them all yet.

Snake Bite or whatever the poison move is called is awesome. The poison part seems mostly worthless, but the damage and animation are great.

Magic Archer destroys hellhounds with ease. The exploding arrows and 6 shot freeze bolt are awesome. The mobility, range and flexibility kept me coming back to it.

Yeah I actually just picked that up in my current visit to the city so I'll be trying that out soon. Poison in general seems pretty useless against tougher enemies, it doesn't tick damage off fast enough.

The freeze bolts also destroy the basilisk, amphibious monsters (for example in the well of the starting village).

Yes indeed! I was shocked when I tried it, because they are some tough bastards. The six shot's initial blow knocks them down, then the follow up shots freeze them solid. It fucks up the Succubi too.

Errr, once you reach Gran Soren you can buy ferrystones which will automatically whisk you back there from anywhere. The option is there, so if you didn't use it... you cant really complain about it.

The obvious reason why port crystals aren't commonly available until NG+ is because it they basically invalidate the whole open world premise. Once you have a bunch of them set... you can bounce point-to-point as much as you like. Making the money for them is not an issue.

Adventure games shouldn't absolve the player of making smart choices in terms of how/what/when travel choices. Picking your next point-of-call from a menu list is hardly conducive to building an impression of a sprawling and hostile wilderness!

Guys I've been on the fence with DD for weeks now. The demo didn't do much for me, as it didn't really give me any idea as to how the game plays outside of combat. I know this isn't supposed to be a game like the Elder Scrolls, but is there enough substance to the towns and world outside of constantly battling?

I disagree with you of course. I do use ferrystones when i need to return to gran soren and i do try to align my travel destinations to make things a little easier, but the problems persist that a few extra port crystals at map intersections would solve.

"oh it's an adventure game!" is a meaningless statement to me. It was fun adventuring out THE FIRST TIME to destinations, not over and over again. Instead of an "adventure", it's just a joyless time sink to kill the same bandits/wolves/harpies to get to the same locations you already went to several times.
