Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Just got this and played through the tutorial level. The combat is janky as hell, the controls are definately going to take some getting used to, but waking up in the first village and it seems like the kind of thing I will like - basically a Japanese action twist on Elder Scrolls.

Since I really didn't like the melee controls I chose an archer since it would give me the choice for long range as well as still being able to hold my own in melee, we'll see how that goes.

Are there many cutscenes? The long intro was incredibly dull.

Nah not too many cutscenes at all, as for the controls you'll get used to it, there are a lot of things you could do and if you're using something like strider, it gives you the ability to cancel out of long animations later on with an ability, it's probably the least clunky arpg you could get, unless you're using a mage or warrior :p

Enemies staggering and such is based on stats, so you'll find enemies not getting stunned in early parts of the game, and having your weapons enchanted with spells matters too

I couldn't tell if I was hitting anything or not most of the time, I was just mashing hoping things would eventually die.

I think it's just a matter of getting used to, I suppose. I didn't have any problems with melee in this game, but maybe I'm just used to the combat of DMC and Monster Hunter. You should definitely experiment with melee later on, though.

I got yet another quest which is impossible to finish. Picking up packages in the canyon is not finish-able until ou get a second quest, the packages are not there yet. So I'm wondering around looking for things which are not there. Capcom needs to need to learn a bit of the "if,then, else" logic.

Hmmm. You absolutely sure about this? I got the letters despite Fedel's quest timing out and getting cancelled, giving me a different cut-scene when I entered the canyon via the rear entrance.

If Fedel's quest is active it shows the postman getting attacked. If its inactive you get just a shot of the Gargoyle flying up to attack you. I've seen both. Was the cockatrice spawned at the leap yet?

Both items are in a particularly obtuse place down a series of slopes with a branch midway, so its easy to miss.

I will say this is one of the few games where a silent protagonist doesn't jive with me.

I never felt like, say, Crono or Link needed to say something and didn't. There wasn't a situation where something was happening and I felt I would have acted dramatically different from the way the game portrayed it.

But in DD, there are people basically in my face and threatening me and my character is basically ":D" all the time. I would have even taken dialogue choices with no voice.

Warriors are awesome. I think I have a secret love affair with that class.

I might try Mystic Knight next, but I would have to create an entirely different character. I usually build my character around a certain look. The Arisen I have now would look foolish as a Mystic Knight. I specifically made him to be a Strider/Assassin. He could have been a Magic Archer but I never had a desire to play as a Mage or Sorcerer to get my Magic attack attributes up.

The game just takes you out of any kind of "immersion" with the presentation, it's too gamey with a lot of designs, I don't mind them but it could use a lot of work.

But Arisen is probably the most hilariously awkward silent protagonist I've ever controlled :p

That LENORE scene was so weird and funny, I still chuckle whenever I watch or think of that scene

Edit: Zombies takes forever to kill without magic, stupid things!

Edit #2: pretty sure I could kill this ogre solo if it didn't fall off the edge

In 150 hours of play, I've never found the snakeskin purse. The reward for that quest really isn't on par with the rarity of the item at its center.

Yes, I'm looking in the right place. Well, I'm not anymore because it's pointless, but you catch my drift.

Hmmm, in all 3 of my playthroughs the purse has been in the same spot two times, and 50ft away from that spot on the third.

I found it in the river by the Abbey. Follow it downstream and stick to the southern (right) bank, that's where I found it twice. The other spot was on the opposite bank, about 50ft upstream from the first spot, the ripples are easy to miss.

Sounds like you chose Strider. Daggers always feel off to me, because all the attacks have so much forward momentum, and it feels much more floaty than the other melee weapons.

finished my 3rd play last night, at about 90 hours now.

i was trying to be thorough and i ended up fucking up the dukes manse quest. AGAIN.

i'm using a guide next time lol, i want my platinum and to be done with it now.

It's just how it's designed, sword feels fine and dagger has no range and can't stagger shit, that's why I prefer swords, except dagger dudes gets to use a bow, those assholes.

You're not done bro! solo run with a new game!

by the way, if anyone needs to farm carrots, my pawns name is Uwantcarrots, psn is quinntendopower

she is large, has minimal equipment and suasion. she looks like a big carrot too.

i hate spending time online looking for the perfect carrot farmers, if anyone knows of a few good massive fat shits with a passion for holding up to 999 fucking carrots at the same time please let me know!

i also killed the griffin last night before he had a chance to make for the tower. headshots take that guy down almost immediately.

I'm very heavy from the everfall loot at the beginning of the game, but I don't care I'm walking with all the stupid loot and
tentacles

Just got this game and oh shit it is badass. I was worried that I would hate it but after seeing some noble posters claim they enjoy it I took a chance. Damn it is fun :)

Teknoman's pawn is an ice cold killer btw, she slaughters entire groups of bandits by herself. Ok time to check out the pawn community thread!

I hit lvl.160 today. I wish the offline Ur-Dragon dragonforged 100% of the time, it's kind of a waste of time since it doesn't. I think I might do a solo NG+ run soon...

It's just how it's designed, sword feels fine and dagger has no range and can't stagger shit, that's why I prefer swords, except dagger dudes gets to use a bow, those assholes.

That's why I'm an Assassin. Sword & Bow is the best combo.

Assassin has the best sword skills as well, I use:

Burst Strike - for closing gaps.
Intimate Gambit - does tremendous damage and usually guard-breaks on the blade twist.
Dire Gouge - bye-bye anything I can grab onto.

Aww oh well I guess there's always NG+.

On a side note I left the city to go do a quest and saw some convoy getting beat down by a bunch of goblins. I saved them since goblins are nothing to me now and then all of a sudden a griffon crashed down on to us and killed everyone but my party. It flew away over the city before I could really fight it :(

Strange coincidence, I read this and then that series of events JUST happened to me. I was just leaving Gran Soren with Mercedes on the escort mission to Shadow Fort.

Wait, no, the fucking piece of shit carried off my charge!! DAMN YOU GRIFFIN!!! I WAS TO MAKE SURE NO HARM CAME TO HER!!

Yeah, I didn't like switching between dagger and swords too much though :(

And I like wearing heavy armor on fighter :D

Edit: Progress for today, adventure through Everfall!

So, after a month since it's release, how and where does GAF place Dragon's Dogma, this generation?

I'd say it's an incredibly competent action RPG. Moreso than KoA: Reckoning, combat wise it's up there with the best, if it had a lock on system I think they could have afforded to make it even more challenging.

Overall though, for me it's still underneath Demon's/Dark Souls & Skyrim just because the presentation and story is so damn bad, it's just laughable at times and it's a shame because Capcom is so much better at telling stories than this. They must have run out of budget and time or something, because it's like the foundation is there but half of the pieces are missing. Besides that I really love what they did with the dialogue in this game, I've never heard so such "authentic" old english spoken in any form of media, it was weird at first but in the end it's what saved the world from being completely unbelievable and broken IMO.

I think the inevitable sequel has a chance at being one of the greatest RPG adventures ever, I'm hoping they're already working on it for next gen.

I completed KOA Reckoning, but got sort of bored near the end and I decided to forego all the sidequests mid-game. Didn't care about the story - skipped all the dialogue.

I stopped playing Dark Souls, because, well yeah, it was too hard. I found it too unforgiving. Hardly made it past the first dragon/wyvern when I decided that it wasn't fun, at all, to play. THe framerate was also horrendously bad, but I had a review copy.

Not sure why I typed this. I guess I want you to tell me to buy this game, but I think I've already decided I will, when it drops in price.

Oh yeah: how's it offline? I don't have any internet.

Before all of this talk about a sequel. I want a meaty DLC land. Maybe where Mercedes or Julien is from. Or Quina said she was going to the main land. I see now point in going to the Everfall and farming high-tier armor and drops for enhancement only to use it in a new game plus where that strong armor is virtually useless.

Massive post game DLC with extemely difficult enemies. I want the DLC to come with a disclaimer that you can only access DLC after you have cleared the main game and need good stats to even get let off the boat.

The legend of Grandonchiere and Erstwile must continue.

Oh yea, pawns are also a huge part of the draw for me. Pre-launch I was pretty down on the concept, but no, they're really well executed. Being able to kit them out and share them online adds to the fun. If you enjoy customizing characters and gear hunting, you'll probably have just as much fun offline.

This would be nice, I just don't get the feeling that it'll happen. I do hope so, though. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

The entire generation? Uhh...I think I need more stipulations than just that. I don't think I'd put it in my top 20 RPGs of the generation or top 50 games but it's a competent game. Very ambitious but just drops the ball in so many areas.

Loving the game.... but Bandits. Why the hell are they such dicks? The area near Witchwood with the bandit castle. Im level 20, should they be giving me a hard time as they are? The only way i can win is cheesing them with distance causing them to run back and forth.... and then a few days later they respawn.

Im only in gear from Gran Soren though. Meh, ill just avoid the place for a while.

You just need to kill the rangers/striders first, those are the biggest assholes, leave the warriors/fighters for last, but at lvl20 they aren't really a problem

Thats how ive wiped them a few times but it involves cheesing one way or the other. When 7 of them decide to dig pile me the mages get one shotted while the supposed "tank" stands around derping.

, well the Tank is probably based on how the master raised him, they could be standing around taking hits or go after the strongest dude, etc.

but yeah it's really just about taking the rangers out and then kill the close range melees, if you or your pawns run ahead into a crowd of them it'll become unnecessary messy especially at the beginning of the game, just pick them out one by one and you could kill them all even if you're a lot lower level than them.

They deliberity kept the story mostly untold because they wanted people to believe that this was closer to the souls series. Its like everything they did was to get the Soul audiance.

Call me crazy but I think I prefer the frame drops on the PS3 to the screen tearing on the 360 (judging the demos). I might just buy the PS3 version, despite the Digital Foundry analysis. Anyone else think the same?

Doubt it, they spread the contents because they are just bad at story telling, they began developing this game before the first souls game was released.

If they wanted to target the same audience, some design choices wouldn't be this accessible, post game would've happened a lot earlier and new game+ wouldn't be shit.

Its not quite up there with the Souls games imho, and Nier was such a standout in its oddball way, but its not far off.

Only real criticism I have is that the challenge aspect falls away too quickly. Still find it powerfully addictive as a loot whoring game mind, but, once you get past about level 70 with good weapons/augments (armour doesn't mean shit, I've murdered NG+ with my main in a thong and a bikini top and nothing else) you're basically in easy mode.

The upside is that combat remains fun, even when you're basically invincible. Fighting a giant fucking Archhydra (not the baby from early on) is something I doubt I'll ever tire of.

Very fun, and there was enough story to keep me happy after ferreting out all the side-stories and bonus stuff.

Good job Capcom.

I saw that some people said that the location is random... hopefully it's not.

I think it's just a matter of getting used to, I suppose. I didn't have any problems with melee in this game, but maybe I'm just used to the combat of DMC and Monster Hunter. You should definitely experiment with melee later on, though.
This might be the problem - looking at the pedigree of the game - what little of DMC I've played (a demo of 4) I hated the style of game, God Of War, DMC and that type of mash-fest is completely boring for me - Monster Hunter I've no experience with.

I will persevere, I just died after venturing out, picking herbs and plants then came across a few groups of Goblins who died with ease, but then came across some larger enemies and wolves who took me down pretty fast - I had no idea what was going on or how to heal I was just mashing attack buttons since that seemed my only option.

7.5/10 or 8/10. Good, solid game with too many annoyances to give it anything higher. Also has an incredibly boring story until the last 20% of the game. Truly fantastic combat though.

The location is absolutely random. I found it in a pool of water in the middle of a dungeon. Just stick to all the bodies of water near Gran Soren that you can find, and look for fishing holes. It'll pop up in one eventually.

I think it's also a rare 2% drop from the Sulfur or Neo Saurians. Also, try completing the Duchess in Distress quest.

Man I just picked this up. I can't really afford it right now and I keep telling myself I should really return it but damn I feel like this game is tailor made for me. Where a lot of other RPG's have come out and really lost my interest I can't stop playing this. The super dense nature of skyrim's world sort of made it feel like I wasn't really exploring anything and while the souls games are just phenomenal I always end up rage quitting.

I'm only 10 hours or so into it.... Though, this game has somehow hit this butterzone with me. It's difficulty is right where it needs to be for the main trails but if you want to go off the beaten path you really have no idea what you're going to encounter and there is a legitimate feeling of risk that isn't completely debilitating.

Doesn't hurt that even though the game isn't exactly the most gorgeous thing it has fantastic direction and is incredibly scenic. Sort of like Red Faction Guerrilla oddly enough.
ymkn9.jpg

Also the character creator is just fantastic

ending pt. 1.
i maxed quinas affinity first for this playthrough and gave mercedes the arisens bond. the duchess was favored in the ending anyway. i tried to finish all quests in NG+. i only missed about 5+follow-ups in my first, and a couple others like ambush got canceled due to story progression. i don't think the quest design is too bad, but there is much room for improvement.
