Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

DDs spells look freaking great, but you will spend 90% of the fight just trying to cast one of them while your pawns mop up. And if you're fighting fast enemies like Hellhounds or Chimeras? Just give up or spam Ingle because you will never ever cast anything.

HAHAHA so not true. If I pulled off more than one high gicel while fighting a drake as a solo sorc, you can do more way more shit on a mere chimera with pawns running around.

1) Find a high ground
2) Cast a fast spell (ingle or levin) till the serpent dies - chimera topples
3) Cast whatever slow ass spell you want.
4) When the chimera gets back up, cast comestion - the best toppling spell ever
5) Go back to step 3.

So I'm about to buy this game.

How awesome is Mystic Knight?

SO awesome....

You will love it.

Not as awesome as an Assassin, but still an ok class to play.

I guess this is good, can't wait to try out mystic knight. Almost finished with my first playthrough and have only gotten through half of the vocations. Second playthrough will be fun as well. Assassin is awesome though, I love it

2 questions:

1.) I stumbled upon a place called the blue moon tower. I got some cool treasure and such but as I ascend I come to two doors, both locked. I'm assuming it's for story reasons? If not any advice would be great.

2.) does any of the DLC add additional areas or is it mostly just additional escort/fetch quests?

1. Yes, eventually you will have to go there to
fight
a
griffin
.

2. I purchased the first set of Quests dlc, and its just fetch quests. I dont think any dlc have addition area's though.

EF loot has been pretty weird. i'm seeing items i didn't see before in my first game. it feels like a new loot table has been opened up with constant drops. i'm getting an item per room on average, multiples aren't too rare either. this might be linked to my level, no clue.

i'm currently at 132.

Its really funny the way some of the more, err, colourful dialogue is so well buried in the game.
Sir Raster ( Him of "Oh its you... Bugger off!") is hilarious, especially the one-time only bit where he mentions that he's more likely "to grow a pair of teats" than you slay the dragon.

Merin has a similarly off-colour comment at one point too. There's so much detail in this game its nuts.

I can't swear to it, but I also think I just got a version of LENOORE! with slightly different dialogue than on my first couple of playthroughs... it definitely seemed different.

agreed. i usually talk to every NPC multiple times in RPGs, i'm glad this game delivers.

Haha! Apparently I'm fucked hardcore. Aslam died on a quest and I guess he's the only fucking NPC in the game that can change my vocation? Fucking awesome.

I think I've spent a hundred hours on my first game and new game+ total, new game+ wasn't so bad, the lack of difficulty didn't bug me too much since I just wanted to finish all the quests I've missed, but I stopped playing that midway through.

Playing on a new character solo is hella cool though, well at least so far, only still lvl31 and just finished the shadowfort quest, strangely I'm coming out around the same level (maybe about 2-3 levels higher) as my first playthrough and the difficulty is just right, nothing too bizarre, I find myself having to plan ahead and grab the right herbs (getting blinded and sleep sucks), managing inventory and choosing the right skills for the mission I'm on.

Fights are a lot less messy, you don't have to babysit the pawns and you could tackle an area however you want, picking out what you want to fight in a crowd, and move as you fend them off, using the environment since you could bait them where ever you want, or even just ignore some of them and leave them for on your way back, the world feel more connected because they're not really infinite spawns, so if you took the effort killing the buttload of bandits, half of them will be gone when you make your way through again, it's like your work pays off.

I'm at level 28 and about twenty hours in and so far I really like this game. I've barely touched the main story I feel like - just did my first main story mission in Gran Soran.

I guess my only real complaints so far are the lack of enemy variety so far and a bit of disappointment with the nighttime portion of the game.

The previews I watched gave off the impression that nighttime wold be a full out survival horror nightmare where enemies are all over and overwhelming and really that just isn't the case for me so far.

Oh one more question, I'm a fighter right now. Been one since the beginning of the game but I think I'm ready to try a new vocation.....if I change and end up hating it can I switch back to fighter without losing all my progress?

You won't lose any progress you gain with a Vocation, so no worries.

Yeah, night time has different set of monsters, but kind of static, also the map aren't really too huge, so they're not really too terrible as your character level too fast for the game to keep the sense of danger throughout the entire game, also depend on the area you wander into

Yeah maybe my character leveling too fast is the issue.

I do feel like at the beginning of the game I was nervous at nighttime. But I'm not sure if it was really because I thought I'd get overwhelmed and die or because that was my expectation going into the game.....probably a bit a of both. I have been a bit surprised about how little Ive died in this game so far. Maybe 5-10 times at most.

Thanks, that's good to hear.

The best way to play, honestly. Especially with all the planning involved. I've actually gotten better by playing solo, because it forced me to learn the most efficient way to kill the harder monsters.

I downloaded the official DD compendium of wisdom App for iPhone. It says that Selene and Symone are both 14 years old... Still strange, but...
I hope i won't end with a affinity to Asalam at the App O,o

At Lvl 28 there are certain parts of the map that you will be totally annihilated, but there's not much reason to go there at all.

Also. I'm going to get burnt at the stake, but I believe this game should have had level scaling. God I can't believe I'm being a hypocrite like this, but I am/was painfully over leveled. I finished the game for the first time around Lvl 60 or 63 I believe. It wasn't my intention to become over leveled but I was so engrossed in the game. I walked everywhere, for days and nights, doing random board quests just because I could, seeing all kinds of random events. Did alot of NPC quests that I am shocked to have done so much on my first run. I spent atleast 130 hrs on this game before facing the Boss. When it came to the story missions I annihilated most things in my way.

So far the toughest thing I have faced are the Drakes, The Dragon itself and a Hydra I fought underneath the Shadow Forte to receive a Golden Rapier. I pretty much destroy any creature in seconds. Maybe I should make a gimped build, but not now atleast. When I get the look I want from the Eve-Fall. Maybe....

Eh...I don't need level scaling. Just more enemies and enemy types. As you level, mob groups would get larger, or a more powerful version gets mixed in. Or on occassion is replaced by something else entirely, like a random boss encounter. Knowing where everything is all the time grows stale.

Oh no Levels calling is a bad way to solve the problem ... You should legitimatly have less problems in starter areas once you've geared up and got levels .. the problem here is the lack of various zones with challenges even at high level or a good NG+ ..

but level scalling remove all the sense of level design and level balance since you don't have to create areas that might lead to some traps since everything will always be stronger than you ..that's cheap design and games that use this method should die in a fire.

DD is awesome because you can explore anywhere from the get go and get encounter better ennemies without warning and fall back if needed ..with level scalling , there is no safe place and that just kill the fun ...

i shouldn't have to worry about wolves at level 45

I finished the quest where you go down into the catacombs and get some revival stone or whatever. Where do I go next to continue the main quest line?

I feel like this game is so unclear about a lot of things. Makes it very frustrating. Grrr! :(

Huh? Revival stone in the catacombs for the main quest line?

Do you mean wakestones in the Everfall?

At this point, DD will be likely be the first 360 game where I get 1000/1000. I usually have little interest in pursuing achievements but I'm a day or two from beating the game a second time and the only thing left to do will be to amass 350 armor/weapons.

Completely random chance from a pool of 8 items per chest, with 4 of them being the ultra rare 2% or 5% loot.
Save in front of a chest & use the
Godsbane
when you don't get what you want to retry immediately.

I think he might mean the quest at the beginning where you were asked to revive the Blacksmith's son, you find a wakestone shard at the bottom of Everfall, which is a separate quest to the main story one.

For the main story quest, you receive the quest from Barnaby where you're asked to investigate the bottom, when you click on whatever thing it was down there you should trigger some
tentacles
, and the quest should update to "report back to Barnaby", after reporting it, you should get a mini cutscene asking you to speak to Maxmillion who is right outside the castle gate at the top of Gran Soren.

Completely untrue. I was casting high level spells on every big enemy in the game, including these fast Chimera. Also never had any problem casting a spell, but I was always sure to adust my pawn's inclination to be more protective of me, and draw enemy attention. I'd also hire pawns with similar inclinations so I would have the time I needed to cast my spells.

Playing as a mage would be damn boring if high level spells were fast and easy to cast. There would definitely be no sense of challenge or strategy in that case.

Those high level spells, like High Maelstrom, High Glicel (I believe, the spell that brings forth spikes of ice) were pretty invaluable when fighting those three big enemies in the post-game.
In one of the rooms where you fought a Gore Chimera, Chimera, and Lich (plus all his Hellhounds).

omg, i'm so dumb. i just kept rushing through the main quest and i got to a point where i had to start a ng+ if i wanted to continue. now i'm back hanging out with rook in cassardis :(

So as far as changing classes and all that, I've got a couple questions if someone could be kind enough to answer:

1. Do you just change classes at the inn in the capital and pay the change penalty, keeping all your old skills as you jump through classes?

2. Are all the skills a class will offer available once you top out the class rank? I don't want to have zero to spend my points on but I don't want to change off a class only to find that I missed out on something awesome because I changed too soon.

I hope Capcom are taking note of what happens to DLC sales when they agree to a shitty 60-day exclusivity period for 360, and find the bulk of the playerbase on PS3.

360 players a missing absolutely nothing with this ridiculous DLC. Its not like this is a Dawn Guard level of proper DLC. It has all been trash so far.

I'm starting to regret some choices, when I finish farming the Everfall for good looking gear. I'll start a NG+ and have Fournival be found guilty, but then romance Symone to live in my home in Cassardis. It only seems fair.

I'd say instead of level scaling, they should have done what DS did and make all enemies 3x stronger in NG+...

I've got all these moves but what's the point if most things die in 1-2 hits.

Killed my first drake last night! So epic, entire group was around LV38ish: Assassin, Sorc, Mage, and Fighter.

Drake comes out of nowhere, blasts me into a nearby lake. Grabs the Fighter and mind-controls her. She grabs my mage. I eat like 20 pieces of random rotten vegetables and hit her like a truck. She drops like a stone, but I was too late. The drake's breath takes me to critical health and kills my healer.

Then the hobgoblins ambush.

I'm fighting like 30 hobgoblins and a drake in the dead of night, barely keeping my party up, and then my lamp runs out of oil.

The drake was at about an inch of health left when I ran out of curatives. I took a risk firing arrows into it's heart and although many missed, one of them crit the drake and knocked it down! I just barely finished it off - and my ebon cape (LOL) got DF'd.

So damn good :)

Do you have a

yes, they're in my inventory. but i've been using them for a loooong time now.

There's a pack of 10 messageboard quests called "The Chosen" up now, details are on the wiki. Nothing special from the looks, challenge-wise, but each gives a unique piece of gear as a reward.

God's had his chance.
So I tossed on my grisly gear and switched vocations with my main to level Warrior for a while and while it took me a minute to get the hang of the rhythm of combat with that big fucking sword once I got it ... oh my lord. This IS Berserker class... so much fun. Went down into the catacombs in post game and was swinging my sword fighting just kind of trying to put it all together and got jumped by a group of 9-10 zombies in one room. Trying to get my combo swing up and it's not working. they keep managing to stagger me or full on knock me over. I take a half step back... pace a short combo.. step back again and do the savage lash and kill all of them but one in a single strike. O.O

I can imagine this being seriously fun. Was reading on the DDwiki that the Arc of Judgemnt or whatever the final charged power attack is can 1-shot a cyclops??
Is this true, ye olde Warrior experts?

I was actually thinking this game could really stand to benefit from that sort of "AI director" thing in Left 4 Dead. At the very least to make sure the pressure is on at night.

I'm starting to get that feeling haha. It's kind of fun for the moment though. I'm finally getting my sorcery rank up and I feel like I'm just wrecking Gransys. Hob Goblins coming up? Oh that's no problem I'll just summon a medieval orbital strike and rain down comets from the heavens. I wasn't so sure about my choice to be a magic user earlier in the game but maaaaan what a good choice that was hahah.

But yeah better enemy variety in a sequel with more powerful foes would be excellent. You can really get ridiculously over powered in this game way sooner than I expected.

Hmmm I wonder where those areas are other than this dragon I came across Nothing has really challenged me at my current level. Then again I only just finished my first trip to Everfall so maybe new areas open up? Or maybe I just haven't gone to the right areas yet?

Game shouldn't have capped at that high when majority of the map was around lvl20, with some of them being at 30+, once you reach lvl40 you're pretty much done with the game until post game if you play with pawns, new game+ made all of the contents obsolete, they need to patch that shit, considering you need to delete your game if you want to start over at lvl1 :p

So... why hasn't this game dropped in price yet? Infact it seems to be more expensive now then before release -.-

Even used copies go for pretty high.

It's probably not selling as badly as NPD numbers would have you believe.

What quests will I not be able to do after a certain "point of no return"?

I can do the duke audience now (level 33), but the man says I won't be able to complete other quests. I read that I have to give up the wyrm hunter licence. Are the two quests I haven't done there the only ones that are effected by the "you can't complete them any more" or are there any others as well?

So is new game+ as big of a difficulty increase as say dark souls was?

And that's a bummer to hear that most enemies level off around 40 since I tend to get bored with games once I'm overpowered and I'm already at level 28.

I fear I'll never beat this game now since I'm sure I'll hit 40+ just messing around and then have no desire to finish the main game. Same thing happened in skyrim.

New game+ doesn't scale, so there's no challenge at all.

The game is still challenging again towards the end of game so don't worry about it, it's not really a long game but there are things to do at the end that's still challenging.

1. You don't lose the skills, but only Augments and a few basic weapon skills transfer between classes.

2. Everything is available once you reach Rank 9. You'll still need to buy the first level of a skill before the second level is available though.

I believe it's just any quest given to you by an NPC that will be cancelled. Notice board quests will remain active.

I took these just before beating the game I believe.

Ummm...yeah. Bestiality??
