Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Whoa, that Hero's gear looks like the business. I might finally have something good looking enough to retire my current gear (a mixture of Brigandine Jacket + Violet Neck Wrap + Guts armor set excluding the shirt). Even for the better stats I refuse to wear that Grisly crap or be a "me too" Crimson set wearer.

This game... oh this game... so good.

The lighting in this game is gorgeous... along with the soft shadows... ooohhhh so good.

I did an escort mission solo without hud, running to the top healing spring and back - even though I'm lvl 69, the game still manages to feel both threatening and fun. Also kept off my lantern and fought my way back through the dark.

Without the HUD on, this game is so ridiculously immersive it's crazy.

What would be a good default option for next time is - having HUD fade out until you enter into combat.

The minimap... I don't think this game should have a minimap - truth is, that kinda thing distracts from the setting. Instead of been immersed in the game, it feels like you're traversing the minimap 30% of the time. Sure you should still be able to check the map easily... but it's just so good when you're lost in the feeling of the game itself.

Also did the same while wandering through witchwood - when it's just you and landmarks... your brain just works differently you know?

It really and truly is. If this game had better textures (they're serviceable but admittedly one of the game's weaker points) it would be jaw-dropping. The shadows in particular look really impressive for consoles.

Game only really need to leave a compass for direction and a simplistic hp/mp bar, the minimap was kind of useless other than knowing where the road and your pawn is, since it doesn't tell you where enemies are (should've been a skill for ranger).

Ideally there would be options... but truth is most people don't really go out of their way to gimp themselves - but because they don't do that, they end up missing out on these non-obvious immersion factors that just make the game that much better.

If they designed it without a minimap, they would be able to engage in that... but also they would be forced to design the game in such a way that landmarks were more obvious and compelling (although they're not too bad as is).

Also, you can navigate via the sun, less so the stars in this game. Pretty fuckin' astounding.

Thought I was 40-something hours into this glorious game... Turns out I'm 65 hours in and I feel like things are just heating up. Amazing!

What's the best armor(melee classes) that I can get in Everfall not counting online Ur? Damn I hope they're not in chests.

So Im on my way to Gran Soren the captial and I've reached that place inbetween Waycastle.

I've only done a few side quests so far like that one chasing the theif, going to witchwood to find that missing lady, i couldnt do that one down in the well in your home town, and I think a few others I cant remember.

Also just before Waycastle I killed that Cyclops near the beach too which took some effort from me and my pawns.

I think Im only at level 10 but I really need better armor and weapons and skills.

Should I just focus on the main quest getting to the captial and following it there?

I ordered the game on the 31st of May from Zavvi using a -10% discount code, but it still hasn't shipped. I cancelled the order 10 minutes ago and will probably wait until its price drops significantly.

Is there any small chance that it will be ported to the PC? Has Capcom mentioned anything yet

Is it me or does the 360 produce better screenshots than the PS3 version?

A break down of my attempt so far.

Stalwart Bow (5% drop rate) - Dropped 3 times
Martyr's Tailsman (4% Drop rate) dropped 5 times
Dragon's Pain (2% Drop rate) Dropped 0 times
Crimson Sabatons (2% Drop rate) Dropped 3 times (in the last 6 attempts...fuckin lol)
Lordly Cloak (2% Drop rate) Dropped 2 times
Shadow Gauntlet (2% Drop rate) Dropped 3 times

Finally got those damn daggers (Dragon's Pain) to drop, best part.....I ended up making more than enough to buy them T_T

I've beaten this game twice and gotten 1000/1000 but it is still calling to me. I may start a third play-through this weekend. Plus I feel the need to check in on my pawn and see how much love she is getting.

The different classes are just so very fun to go back to, especially with all the pretty cool skill hybrid classes offers (haven't tried magic archer yet), I just dislike that your level cap is too high so new game+ is just not too fun, I would take a new game option where it lets you start from fresh but keep the vocation ranks so I could restart over and over.

God's had his chance.
Tweaked my assassin skills a little last night including circling intimate Gambit back into my rotation after not using it for easily 10 or 15 levels (83 or 84 now...)

Holy shit... i remember why i fell in love. Staggered an Ice Drake in the everfall ... hits the ground.. 2 1/2 intimate stabs and he's done. Fastest fight i've ever had. My pawn directly after the battle .."HAH HAAAAH! Well done!!"

So ... who's been at the dragon today? what's his life lookin like? I want to kill him today. Tonight. Whatever... it's going to happen.

I think it's just because it's smaller and you don't notice the compression as much. I could definitely be wrong though.

Aw man, after not being interested in this game at all (frankly I hadn't really done any research on it), I watched the GameTrailers review on it for kicks and now I'm really itching to play it.

I LOVE these types of open-world RPGs with good combat and deep mechanics. I'm going to have to put this in my to-buy list because it looks like a real hoot.

Anyone here thinks Warrior class is the most awesome? I just switched to Warrior, don't have that many skills yet, but it seems sort of waity. I'm thinking it'd be more fun as assasin, but not sure.

So I think I'm pretty much done with DD at this point. I've completed it twice, farmed the hell out of the Everfall, killed the Ur-Dragon on and offline... I just bring myself to keep levelling up now that I've hit 140. I was planning on taking it all the way up to 199/infinity but it's feeling more and more like a chore. It's a pity Capcom don't seem to be interested in releasing any decent DLC for this as it might've kept me interested. Regardless I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with DD2.

Bought the game today and played for a short while. So far, so good, but I'm getting slaughtered in the well in the first town. What level should I be to attempt the lizardmen there?

You know, I'm ok with this. Something bothers me about Skyrim's "complete accessibility" mantra, which sees you become the archmage, lord of thieves, head of the fighters guild, brewers guild, bakers guild, tapestry weavers guild... it's somewhat ridiculous. The only meaningful choice (imperials or .. whatevers they were called) is a decision between two equally stupid groups.

It makes the quests in DD feel a bit more meaningful than just checkboxes on a laundry list, and it makes (the first playthrough anyway) a bit more personalised.

Not really. Very few are the quests in DD that get cancelled due to a decision you made. They get cancelled because they're tucked into some ill-travelled backwood, or because you hit some sort of invisible "deadline" without anyone telling you (i.e. Quina in the Witchwood, Duchess in Distress). Skyrim, for all its faults, actually had substantially more meaningful choices than DD.

I love this game, but I'm just telling it like it is. They both have a lot to learn from one another. Skyrim needs better combat. DD needs to learn how to get its shit together.

Thanks, and how about this Mercedes quest?
I just watched her fight and she lost and gave me a sword
Is that what I was supposed to do?

You can do it at a low level provided you have a means to pull them up into the tunnel one at a time, for example sniping at them with a bow. Don't jump down among them, if any of your pawns are dumb enough to drop down simply move back up the tunnel and spam "come" or "help" until they climb back up to you.

Its one thing to do, you have other options :D

You could've also interfered and
killed Julien, then revive him again using a Wakestone. Visit him at the castle jail and he'll give you his shield.

The well was pretty low level, also it will help if you upgrade your gears a bit, the starter armors and weapons were pretty crap, especially if you run around with a rusty sword, lol.

Just remember to slash their tails and they will be pretty weak, the hardest part is the fact it could get really dark down there due to your lantern going out if you get knocked into the water.

Sorry mage pawn, who told you to appear right when the ambush music kicks in at night, should've said something instead of running away when I slashed you!

Decided to take someone's advice from earlier in the thread and I just turned off the mini map along with the controller display. Left pawn subtitles on though. I've found that I legitimately appreciate what they have to say for some quests it's just that they'll often start to say something useful but cut themselves off and say something dumb about how old this bridge I'm crossing is. So at least I can still read what they meant to say haha.

So I started the Griffin quest, almost level 40 now...
I got it wounded but it flew away to the Bluemoon tower...if I look at the red mark on the map it's a place I never went to yet and in the middle of nowhere, what's the best way to get there?...beyond everything I explored is blocked by mountains...

Just go across the bridge to the right (when you exit the Gran Soren) and keep heading right. It's a linear path and there's really only one way there.

Thanks for all the answers guys!

One more Q: Are the Greatwall and Duchess in Distress quests timed in any way? Not in the sense of doing quests, but in real game time (night day cycle?) I know you gotta do the Duchess before the Greatwall...

The only "timed" quest is Fornuvals trial.
The rest aren't timed, they just expire when you advanced a specific storyline quests.

Just played the demo, and quite liked this. I might get it once it drops in price. How long is the game?

40-80.

Opinions. I still don't have a problem with this. Why should all the quests be given up on a plate? I will say that to begin with it irritated me having quests get cancelled, it was only when I got over my own desire to MUST COMPLETE EVERY QUEST EVER that I began to see this design as something alright by me.

There's a similarity to Dead Rising. IIRC, a whole lot of people were "WTF!" at Dead Rising at first because it was literally impossible to do everything on one run, at the same time.

While Dragon's Dogma certainly isn't a "restart again and again on purpose" roguelike, it seems to share a lot of the underlying design philosophy of a game like that.

Which also means it isn't for everyone, and a lot of people are apt to simply say "it does it all wrong", as did many say of Dead Rising.

The way they've got the system set up, is not perfect and a sequel could expand and buff out the blemishes... but it makes the game feel involving in a different way, which is a good thing. (Standing apart from the crowd, that is.)
