Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Just changed to assassin without really planning ahead and am gonna have to farm goblins for a while to get some of the skills i've been waiting for. But godamn.. LOVIN this game. Had a few run ins with some higher level bandits that caught me off guard jumping out of a house on my way back to GS. Barely managed to get out alive and flew through 2 levels for my effort.

After getting familiar with the city and opening up
the hunt
I just packed on as many missions as i could at one time and am now working my way through them. Just finished getting to the hill with the Arisen thing scared into the side of it out of trailer and ran into my first Cyclops. Was nervous and saved and thought about and cleaned out every other enemy in the area before I started in on it ... and then just WRECKED the son of a bitch! 3 perfect eyeball shots with the full draw and then worked my way up his back till i was just under his neck, popped a potion and then decapitated that big guy. for a bar and half at least I was just cutting away at him in this same spot while my pawns kept him distracted. Was glorious.

If my daughter wasn't demanding elmo out of my big screen right now i'd never leave this game. Naps soon little one. Naps soon....

Oh forgot to say. This is indeed the type of gameplay that really makes the entire thing feel epic. Technical issues aside, you can get so lost. It makes you feel like a hero doing all that shit and coming out from a battle as the winner. I just wish I could push a button for a victory pose:)

So I'm level 20 and decided to venture toward witchwood but the bandits are still kicking my butt. Any warrior class bandits take me ages to kill even buffed up with fire, any advice? Guess I need to recruit some warriors of my own.

yea, they're overpowered. my advice is to draw them out little by little then gang up on em.

I could beat them with level 8. I've recruited two Fighters and they would regularly grab these bandits with shield so I could beat them up with my Strider. I just had to make sure I wouldn't get hit by them since I would die super fast.

You are alone? I would say ya if you don't have pawns set up and someone ranged to keep them busy, or a fighter to take the brunt from you always getting attacked, or a mage to keep you healed up and buffed. I rarely traveled alone though.

Just run past them, down the hill, and enter the Witchwood.

So I wandered into the Water God's Altar to escape nightfall. I was only level 8 when I went in, and through some tough trials, made it through most of it. I am now level 13, and found some great loot. This is why no level-scaling is the way to go!

You could beat them in lower levels easily. If you're having trouble, avoid surging thru them to not aggro every group after them. You could finish off the rogues/archers first then pile on the remaining dude.

* * *

Question tho:
Can you create multiple pawns in the game?
One of the quests cannot be completed after arriving at the capital. Would they still let me re-try for the quest again?

Also if you see a pawn Sylvanna (currently level 18) - hire her! :p

Ya that's for sure. Pick up and extra. Even one more guy can really even out fights that felt impossible before.

I highly recommend people, when they go strider/archer/assassin, to at least pick up a Warrior pawn. I would even go as far as to recommend the warrior as your main pawn because you can set augments that will make enemies attack him. This gives the rest of your party (preferably mage and sorcerer) to attack the entire mob.

This game just gets more and more addicting. It can be damn punishing when you even THINK that you are now strong enough to do a region where you previously died, but boy is it rewarding when you finally can.

I finally managed to kill these guys at level 18 with a full party at around the same level. Hit-and-run strikes agaist them work best - lure some away from the group and kill them one by one. A lot of people seem to be able to do this at lower levels by simply hiring high-level pawns. If you go into it like a straight fight, it's probably suicide until about level 27, I imagine.

I don't know why these guys are so strong - seems odd for an enemy you're expected to best right after leaving the Encampment. Good challenge, though. Tougher than any boss creature I've encountered thus far.

Ugh I'm going to have to bail out of here until the 7th when I get this. It's hard to watch and I don't need hype to rise any more.

Am I the only one who was not fought in the night as of yet? I always tend to do quests which take the minimum amount of time so I can get back at the city just before dusk. I am such a pussy.

Ya thats a good way to go and a solid setup for a way to get through with minimal issues.
I was punished in the Well in the beginning. That was my first death. Totally thought I was ready.

I was not ready. I was as far from ready as I could have been. I swear the baddies juggled me like my body was made of handles. Just passing me around like a doll. It was pretty terrible.

No but isn't that awesome! Its that kind of thing that makes the game.

Ease into the night on the trail outside of Cassardis. Goblins and wolves are all you have to worry about - it's a good chance to get loot ad boost your Pawn's knowledge.

I second this - warriors and striders have great synergy.

Dude, you need to go out in the woods at night. The mood and intensity is pretty awesome. I had a shocker moment last nite when a Saurian jumped me from behind a rock at the river's edge. But the best part is hearing the bones of skeletons in the darkness walking toward you, as your pawns yell warnings. Love it.

I'll repost my questions here:
- Can you create multiple pawns in the game?
- One of the quests cannot be completed after arriving at the capital. Would they still let me re-try for the quest again?
- If I change my vocation to Assassin, what will happen to my Fighter skills?

You should just try at least once.

I was escorting someone to the Shadow Fort and along the way I noticed that I'm in the area where lots of goblins and a Drake live. Sure enough I run into the goblin horde. I'm level 16, so I have no problem taking them on. As I was fighting them, I hear the Drake roar. I immediately book it to the fort knowing I have no chance against the Drake. I stop to turn around, only to see it flying at me. I run all the way to the fort, then once I complete my quest, I play it safe and use my last ferrystone.

I love this game, despite the horrible map.

I spent most of my first few hours running around between the first city and the encampment so there wasnt a lot of danger in my way. It wasnt that bad.
Then I did the well quest and it was dark and I got my lantern wet so it was so darker and I was literally attacking shadows and crying.

Im never going out in the dark again! :(

sounds scary, I've only done it once or twice just trying to get back to a safe have.

After reading the post about a giant black night coming out, zombies, and stuff as solodified my resolve to not adventure in the darkness.

As a matter of fact, I'm in the middle of bandit territory waiting for daylight to come. Nowhere near another safe place so I don't know how long I'll be here:(

1) No. You get one "main" pawn to customize. You fill your remaining 2 part spots with other peoples Pawns

2) To my knowledge, if you miss a quest, you're hosed

3) Its like the FFT job system. Skills or abilities that can, will transfer over.(weapon skills do not, unless your new vocation uses the same weapon).

Do treasure chests respawn? I swear I looted the shorelines near the start of the game and I just returned from Withchwood and their all closed again and can be reopened. I think I answered my own question, but I was just curious if anyone else noticed this?

I was able to do it at level 11 all around, 27 seems like major overkill. There's only really a few big threats, I just took out the bow dickheads with my strider, the full bend skill knocked them down the hill and I used a big rock as a good sniping spot to cover my pawns. The shield weilding guy could quickly kill me but my pawn took a decent beating...witchwood itself isn't bad, so it is pretty odd and you can just run past him.

I did on on the hydra head escort to city mission.

So mystic knighters, what do you think about the class early on? I feel like I wanna go assassin because I don't really have anything going for me right now.

Just learned something new, anyone whose made it to Gran Soren knows to look out for falling boulders in certain areas.

If you have a bow you shoot the boulders and make them fall before your reach them.

Hah, yeah, I'm just the sort of player where that sort of thing never enters my mind. The more I play DD, the more I have to accept that some fights just aren't for me. I was initially fooled by how the quest is offered at such a low level - I expected every obstacle in my path to provide a decent challenge to characters level 8-12. Live and learn, I guess.

To those who beat it at level 6, you really can't deny that this area is disproportionally difficult in comparison to other bandit fights in the area, right? I'm just trying not to feel like a lameass, here. Maybe it's because I'm stuck using game-generated pawns (no reliable internet connection).

I post a lot from work, for those who are curious.

I'm loving the game. The story is pretty shit, the characters are soulless, but the combat is freaking great and more than makes up for a lot of the rough edges. The big battles give me that Shadow of the Colossus feel. There is a lot of potential to grow, glad that I bought it.

Wolves and undead you say? I just got my ass handed to me in the night by 6 sorcerers who seemed it was fun to gangbang my main pawn chick. 1 fireball and I was done for.

As if bow-users needed another reason to dominate.

the big monster jumped to its death, that happen to anyone else?

Me too. Are we sure this isn't scripted once it gets to a certain level of health? I recall him being quite formidable and not being sure if i could weather the fight. then he just falls and I'm like "alright".

Oh man, that Drake. Yeah, it freaked me the fuck out! Then, it started speaking in tongues to my Pawn and turned my pawn to fight against me. Awesome though.

I hear there are also 'Wyrms' and 'Wyverns' in the game. Can anyone confirm? Are these the same model as the Drake, just different colors/elemental effects?

This game man, I just took out an armored cyclops after like 10 mins then whats waiting for me a little behind him...a dragon. I just said forget it and turned the other way

I replayed the demo twice and made my definitive version of Carrot and Angua to have on the main game. The wait is becoming so long.

Effing boulders, man

arrows buddy, you know you want to:D

I was a fighter, then assassin, and figured since my pawn couldn't be a hybrid at least one of us should be so I took the plunge and am loving the magic archer. This coming from someone who never plays as a mage, it's just the perfect balance.

Is the demo indicative of the final game? I ask because I found it to be really underwhelming, but that might be largely down it all being robbed of any context, that and it does an extremely poor job of explaining anything.

I keep being impressed with the little things in this game. Lots of "hardcore" stuff in here that I didn't notice until a little bit ago. Namely, food that you gather will rot if not used. Picked up some fish and some meat from some beasts and after a day or so it is now rotten. Also getting wet not only drains your stamina faster, as you are weighed down by wet clothes, but mages cannot cast fire magic when wet, not to mention your lantern will go out if you're in water. And the dread when the sun begins setting and you're a long way from a town or outpost. My god, the dread!

I also like the little touches like when you're out of stamina and bent over breathing heavily, your pawn will come up to you and touch your back and ask if you're okay or tell you to take it easy.

Little things, but I like them. Gives the game a very unique feel. Also forms a pretty cool bond with your main pawn that I didn't think would be there. I figured they'd just be a pack mule or something, but I find myself genuinely caring about my pawn.

This is awesome. I never noticed that with me getting wet.

That happened to me, as well, so it may be intentional (or just a horrible bug). I got him down to about 3/4 HP and then my pawns were just like, "Victory is ours!" and he was gone. I was like "WTF?" lol

I have a question, sorry if it's been answered earlier, but how quickly do enemies respawn?
I left it paused for about 45 minutes or more, and when I got back to it, all the enemies have returned.
