Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

I should get it this weekend. :) Any tips for a first timer? Also, when you take a screenshot, it just puts them in your photo album? I'm getting the PS3 version.

It saves to your PS3's HDD.

Pro-tip: always carry oil for your lanterns (for your Pawn as well). Be wary at night and make haste. Night time is very dangerous in this game as your field of vision is very limited, and wandering around aimlessly can make you fall off cliffs.

Agree with everything here. 100%

Haha, thanks! :) Always have lantern oil? *check* Can you camp anywhere to make it daytime again, or do you have to go to an inn for that?

Getting tons of positive feedback on my pawn... really neat game mechanic.

I think I put more thought into the pawn than the main, because I know other people are using it.

You have to go at an inn or there are certain camp sites in the game where you can rest and wait until the morning time. Camp sites are few and far between, though, so don't always rely on a glimpse of light at a "camp site" - more like an ambush site, heh.

Can someone sell me on this game? I read the OP and it was more like a guide than a pitch and I read the Eurogamer review and it was sort of vague as to if it's overall a good, deep experience that is a lot of fun and exciting to progress in.

I'm still a Fighter. Nad some of the higher level abilities are bad ass, like Flesh Skewer (love that)!

And my pawns are:
-Sorceror
-Mage
-Archer

So they cover the distance and give my sword Fire, Holy power, etc so I can close in. Fucking awesome.

Sounds awesome! It's just the inability to dodge or block that kinda worries me...

I'm loving this game, tech problems be damned! I think this game replicates nighttime wilderness better than any other game I've seen, Alan Wake included. It's so goddamn awesome and intense; especially when you can hear the beasts in the darkness but not see them, and the Undead coming out of the ground? Sick.

I have a nice Conan pawn, level 15, with some decent buffs, and 2 level 15 Mages laying down ice and fire, and we are currently tearing shit up. I thought about rolling alone, but I love the teamwork from the pawns; haven't noticed any crazy AI problems yet. Plus, it made Witchwood a cakewalk at level 10. This game is damn good so far.

See these are kind of the vague descriptions I see everywhere.

I don't like SP Monster Hunter and find it really dull and grindy (but I like the idea of fighting giant tough monsters), I do like SoTC, and I do like RPGs.

I'd say it's well worth the full price i paid for it.

The battle system is quite rewarding (if a bit repetitive)
Pawns are a very novel idea (even if the AI can be dumb)
Graphics are decent (animation needs some work)
Voices are decent (GRRM seems to be influencing everyone...)

What I like about the game is a sense of exploration. I was never worried about going into any dungeon in games like Amalur/Skyrim/DA2/ME3/FO/etc. THIS game will definitely get you worried and prepared ahead of time. You WILL find good stuff in dungeons. You WILL get a sense of accomplishment. You WILL go FUCK YEAH the first time you beat one of the big creatures.

I really do wish Cap had made a few more different design changes to REALLY put this over the top, but the really stupid things I hate
- no true quick travel
- some confusing quests and quests markers
- some janky fps/tearing

don't put a dent in the overall game.

Definitely what sold me on this game is picking up enemies and throwing them off of cliffs. Though they can somewhat do the same to you...a wolf was charging at me and before I could finish my attack to stun him, his run had pushed me far enough to the edge that his attack pushed me over :p

What are you looking for in an RPG? That will determine a lot about your perception of DD.

This is an RPG that feels much more old school than a lot of recent efforts. You will get quests early on that tell you to go to areas where enemies can curb stomp you pretty easily. It's a game that fills you with a sense of adventure most games lack lately, as there's no (widely avalible) fast travel, you have to plan out treks and try not to get caught out far away at night, where you lose almost all sight on what is ahead and get attacked by much more aggressive enemies. But when you do get caught at night and manage to fight your way to the morning, just before another town? It feels amazingly satisfying.

I'm absolutely loving this game. I thought I would regret it on an impulse buy, but damn is it great. Even if it stutters, I'm having loads of fun, especially as a Strider.

Just thinking of how this would be multi-player makes me shiver. Damn it Capcom, WHY!?

Yeah but warriors can't.:/From what i've heard the dodge move is also only available to the strider/assasin class.

If you have a fighter, and have the right move mapped (it's the move mapped to RT+O/B in the demo) you can hold both triggers and do a backwards leap move, sans the lunge attack that normally follows. It's really useful. (It's basically the Dark Souls move) And I like it more than the dodge, because you're facing the target and your shield is at the ready.

I hate getting caught outside at night and having to wait all the way to daytime

So far I've owned the night... but I'm still early in the game. I have to say though I shit bricks when my lantern got doused in the fight down the well. That was pretty sketchy. And awesome.

Have you tried the demo?

Oh i didn't know that, thanks. Can you do the backwards leap move with the warrior class as well?

And The Last Wizard you should mark your spoilers above.

I don't know...

I have to say man this DLC armor kinda screwed up the early game. That's all the pawns are wearing and people who didn't pay for it aren't getting their pawns chosen.

I kinda regret buying it... just because it was way too OP.

Also a reminder to those who seem to get a blurry image with the 360. Remember to NOT have your 360 on autosensing when it comes to your color setup in your system preferences. The setting for high def movies is the one you want...well if your on a high def screen. Huge difference between that and Auto or as I just found out my brother was playing with it set to RGB.

really enjoying the game, &, yeah, the pawn mechanic's fantastic, & rewarding - sorta re-defines what 'co-op' can be :) ...

Game comes out here tomorrow (whoo!) and I still don't know what job to go as lol.

Are there any that make the game a little easier than the others? Any that are outright difficult to use?

I'm so excited!

Does anyone play as a fighter/warrior?Is it really the hardest class to master?

My fighter can kill dragons, chimeras, cyclopes and any goblin that dares to cross my path... however... there is a simple quest that have you slay two sea birds--seagulls mind you... and I CANNOT kill the d**n things to save my life!!

I've been running up and down the beach chasing the evil birds but none in my team has a bow, LOL! Oh Gosh... I'm running up to the Encampment and renting a Seagull Slayer to complete my quest : (

Seriously, I am loving every minute... lots of fun.

Finally got around to trying the demo, and it was great. I was bummed out when it ended, since I did not want to stop playing. The aesthetic customization is great, and character building seems deep and varied. The combat is quite good, which I'm not used to in open world games. And I love what I'm hearing about the element of danger, and risk vs. reward in exploration. Overall, it just seems to offer a lot of things I want out of open world RPG's. Definitely gonna pick it up over the weekend.

BTW, for my pawn I tried to recreate Bronn from Game of Thrones. Who wouldn't want to have that dude watching their back?

I suspect the game feels like a bit of everything cuz it seems everyone inside Capcom worked on the damn thing at some point.

You got DMC guys doing the combat and enemies, you got Monster Hunter influence in the creature modeling and scale of big enemies and the crafting / gathering / armor selection... you got the Resident Evil team contributing their ah, authentic, brand of interface, inventory juggling, and even the damn fonts.

I saw it suggested today that another thing the game feels like is Capcom's AD&D side scroll brawlers expanded into a 3D open world adventure and dang if there's not some truth to that. The fighter class especially, complete with the way attacks impact, the chunkiness of it and hit freeze, blunt sawing sound of hacking through enemies. There's really a connection there. Plus having basically the AD&D bestiary on-call seals the deal.

Lol... so I get all the way to witchwood. realize as the sun begins to set that I don't have my lantern. Not sure how that happened, but it's gone. I'm stuck here in the pitch black. haha :(

Question: I am in the game pretty far, but havent found any Castle type levels yet. Are there any? Sure there is the abbey and cities, but I mean fighting monsters inside castles?

PS. I'm already thinking, a sequel could be just... wow..

Calling it a night just before heading to witch wood. Reading the last couple of pages of this thread has me wanting to tackle that with plenty of time.

So far I'm liking it, killed the ogre and the hydra. The hydra fight was more chaotic than it needed to be due to the camera but that's the only knock I can come up with at this point and that's only because I'm wondering if it will be an issue with boss fights throughout.

DD has almost nailed what combat should be for any RPG in the future. Interactive, ongoing tactics and positioning are finally getting to the point were they should be.

edit: wish I would have grabbed a screenshot of my strider in the jaws of the hydra. I was on one of the necks, it thrashed around and I wound up stuck in the jaws.

What's the quest line for Witch Wood? I feel like I missed something, as I've just been killing random shit/exploring since the game started. The only major quests I've done so far:
the well quest, escort the cart, and the underground pawn quest
, otherwise I've just been leveling. Sitting @ lvl 20 now with not much time played(feel like it's REALLY fast to level), guess I should start questing for a bit, as I can't find any good weapons in shops anymore.

My pawn is finally shaping up @ Rank 7 Mage, finally got some good heals/support stuff for her.

Kinda pissed that the Metamorphosis potion doesn't respawn in the shop, so I guess I can't make my pawn taller(didn't notice how short she was til now) :(

So now that this is out, I have to ask: is there any way to make the pawns shut up?
Yes, use the pawn chair. Mine hardly says anything now unless it's something new.
