If I find something I can't use or if I have something good left over when finding/buying new equipment, I often give it to my support pawns as a "thank you" gift for a job well done.
Same here. Been using somebody's "Gandalf" (lol) for the past few levels.. Found a hat for mages and had no use for it so I gifted it to him. His owner probably won't have any use for it by the time I send him back, but oh well.
Oh man, so tired after last night. Things started to kind of "click" a bit more, but still not super happy with the lock-on blocking setup.
Anyways, last night I decided to do the quest for the
hunt
in the quarry area. So after fighting a ton of
ogres or whatever those hairy brown things are
I finally get to the place I need to be(got lost fighting goblins in the dark for ~20 minutes).
Have this HUGE battle, running around trying to keep my pawns in check, one of them keeps trying to use a
ballista
but keeps falling off the roof...so I'm running all over fighting everything pretty much. Fast forward to this
cyclops
I'm fighting on the roof, and the dumb pawn decides to get blown off the roof through some wall into a building I can't really access yet(well I guess I could have inhindsight, but not really mid-battle easy). So...pawn dies, have to fight this fight with 3(not too hard), but annoying because I wanted to leave good feedback on their seriously awesome pawn.
Finally finish the quest after probably an hour or more at this place. Start heading back in the dark(no choice otherwise really, don't want to just idle around). Goblins, goblins EVERYWHERE. Those god damn horns are going off left and right, sprinting around trying to kill the horn blowers, but they just keep coming. Probably spent 20 minutes in this one spot just killing goblins because they kept coming.
So my party is down pretty low on HP, not a lot of pots/food left, but I got the goblin situation under control, so I start heading toward the entrance(but I go the other way this time to reach it)........
Suddenly I see: "Ambush Quest - Reward 250000 XP" or something like that, just some un-Godly amount of XP for the reward......yea, out of no where I hear
fucking swooping wings
and then this huge shadow
was a drake I think
....I started sprinting and didn't stop until Grand Soren(probably 20 minutes of running).
I started that quest at about 11:30...didn't go to sleep until almost 2:30. This game is pretty epic.
Wow... so I was playing with the EU version of the game up until now, but I got my Japanese version today after work. Popped it in and... the Japanese version doesn't recognize the EU save This was always okay with other Capcom games, but not with this one. 15 hours down the drain.................
Took an escort quest, ended up fighting 2 cyclops at night, a golem through the morning and a chimera in the afternoon, and arrived back in town at night, busy day as an Arisen.

Why aren't people pressing more on buttons? Just... you know, checking what each does? There's no way for you to trigger some kind of atomic detonation if you do this. New game? Take controller in hand, and press on the little bumps until you know what each does.
It sure ain't rocket science. And surely beats being angry or frustrated because someone else didn't point out something.

Ended my first session yesterday getting into Gran Soren. Mostly positive impressions so far, and the floaty movement & the staccato rhythm of the combat didn't grate me as much as I thought they would.
I'm slowly making sense of the world and what's in it. So far I've kept up with the linearity of the beginning, but tonight I'll probably do my first free-form session -- just exploring and fighting whatever I'll find on the way.
All-in-all -- I think the game will offer me what I need. A world to explore and enough freedom to do it in my own rhythm and style.
My only complaint so far is that theres no quick slots for consumables. Other than that, inventory has been great. I love the buying/selling system where you can just unload everything at once.
4 hours in, level 13, and I'm not really feeling this at all. The best part is the combat and even that's mediocre because of the chaotic nature of battle and no lock on. The animation is pretty nice too but everything else has been 'meh'. I'll give it another 4 hours this weekend and hope it clicks.

Went through the well underneath the starter town last night. Game is so much fun. However, I have no quests to do now so I guess its time to head for the big town I can see from the coast.
I love the pawn and party system. I know a lot of people hate the constant chatter (and a lot of it is quite redundant) but it makes it feel like a real adventure companion group to me.

If you don't like the combat, you're not going to like the game. I recommend changing character types to see if there's something else you might enjoy more. Pretty much everything in the game outside of combat and enemy animations feels half-assed and lame, but if the combat clicks then it's a winner. I definitely get the review scores, both the really low and the relatively high. I'd love to see a combat system like this in a much better game, but I said the same thing about Amalur, which also suffered similar issues to this in that not much else of the game lived up to the combat. Where this game succeeds and Amalur failed is difficulty. I'm 5 hours in and I pretty much hate the story and the dialogue and anything having to do with talking to people, but the combat has me engaged and the difficulty keeps me on my toes. Based on people that have finished it, it remains difficult the whole way thru, which is a huge plus.
There's sort of a lock-on as you level up, but I tend to agree with the complaint. And I don't buy the "well there's different areas on the enemies to target". So? Just implement a way to switch targeted areas once you're locked-on. Other games have managed to do it. I don't know what it's like with the warrior/mage/sorcerers but with the archer it becomes less of an issue as you get deeper in the game.

It's just a different style of combat. I guess you can take it or leave it, but I like it as is. There's pretty much a light lock on for a lot of powers anyways. I can do the Strider's slide attack through some dudes, immediately press it again, and he'll double back and slide through them the other way.

Lock on pisses me off in every game if it seems unnecessary for most encounters. I usually avoided it in Dark Souls except when it offered clear benefits, I didn't even notice it missing in this at first. As long as my swings hit more than one target, I don't see the need. The place I need it most is spells, and spells have a lock-on.
I'm about 7 hours into this and things are starting to open up. Really enjoying the game, and have been hyped for a while especially after the demo.
The combat has been really fun, I haven't had a chance to tinker around with equipment and other skills. So much is daunting at this point, so at my own pace I'll let things unfold. The world has opened up and there's already plenty of paths with enemies that just destroy me.
The bosses, animations, and action have been the high points and that's exactly what I was looking for in a game.
I came into this game to beat ass, and that's still my plan. Feels good to just get a grip on the fighting mechanics 'till they're second nature.

In a weird way the song is starting to get me pumped up to play.
four lizard men who were nearly indestructible and can one shot kill you. What level are you supposed to fight these? Can I come back later, I made it to the big city and it said one of my quest was removed, so I can't go back to the starter town?
I love the combat, though some of the encounters on the roads are too close together. Can the mage heal to full or does your max health go down until you sleep?
Bah! After starting over as a fighter I'm really starting to miss my bow. I think I might restart as a Strider....again. I will PAY for multiple character slots CAPCOM!

Because it's the most constant complaint i keep reading about both from gamers (that have either tried the demo or game) and reviewers alike.
So if it keeps people away from buying the game then it's absence (obviously) is not good for the game.I don't see why it shouldn't have been an optional choice for those who want it.

The knowledge chair is kind of annoying. They should just let you go through all the questions and pick how you want them to act, instead of just throwing a random two or three at you and then making you re-try over and over until you get the one you want to change.

aight. back with the ps3 version, too bad about my level 22 but i can burn back to that in no time. hopefully this version plays better.
and as for lock on - the game definitely has a lite version of auto lock - test it out by holding block near a bat, your character literally swivels around to face the bat at all times (this is the easiest way for me to kill bats - enchant shield with the mystic knight, watch them fry). That being said, coming from a DMC background i would love to have more control over who i target and when. This is especially true for certain warrior/fighter moves. The wide arc move in particular lets you chose which direction you want to dodge in once you have the upgraded version. but without a clear lock on system, the game inconsistently reads my joystick movement as a "walk" instead of a "dodge this way" input.
also if anyone knows someone who wants this Resident Evil demo code speak up
Just to make myself clear,i don't have a problem with DD's combat personally.I'm quite used to play games without lock-on like MH and DS.I loved the demo and i'm currently waiting on my copy of DD.
But since i'm sensing an "i'm too uber for you easy-mode peasants" attitude coming from your posts then you obviously missed the point of my posts so yeah, you should better just "let it go."
This game just keeps on surprising me with all of the attention to fine details. Last night I was doing the 'Of Merchants and Monsters' quest and was being ran through by an Ogre. I needed to find a place to heal before going to rescue my party, so there is a little room off to the side that the Ogre can't reach you in.
When going through my inventory I noticed this item called 'Throwblast' that I had not used yet, but sounded like it would obviously cause some serious damage. Choosing to ignore the "handle with extreme care" message that was in the description, I figured I could get a good shot in on him with this item and then take off to revive my pawns.
Lo and behold, I throw it right at the doorway where the Ogre has been swatting, growling and trying to get to me from and BOOM, it blows a giant hole in the wall and in comes crashing the Ogre and takes me out with one swat. This game is full of little surprises, but I guess I should have heeded the warning more carefully. It's just that most games don't go quite that far.
OK... I'd like to progress the story forward. My last quest in the area is to find scrap metal, but I haven't the slightest idea where to obtain this. I've been farming bandits, but no luck. How do you craft it?
I'm ready to move on, but my completionist tendencies are getting the better of me.
I've gotten up to about Level 22. There was a rough patch at about level 15-19 that kind of sucked. Kept getting nearly killed by bandits on the road, and other creatures. But now I can kind of feel like I'm hitting on all cylinders.
Almost maxed out Mage, but I've now switched to Magick Archer. Man, Archer in the game is a blast. It's a good selling point for the game by itself.
I'm trying to stay with Pawns created by other Gaffer's, hope they do the same with mine.
I did get a couple "Dragon Dogma Servers not responding" when saving at the inn yesterday, but it still seemed to go through for me. Anyone else get this message?

so many ogre fight highlights, and in that cave especially. i've never had Throwblast before, but my eye opener came when i was climbing on an ogre's back. In most games i'll just get swatted at or fall off once my stamina runs out but in this game the ogre jumped backwards into the air, slamming down on it's back with me still on him.
i was very dead obviously but still that surprised the shit out of me
No lock-on requires you to learn to be more precise. I have always had a thing for archery especially and love how you have to be a crack shot in this game. But those who want more of a lock-on can either go magic archer or fighter. Magic archer has full lock-on and fighter semi-locks on when you raise your shield.
I think the combat covers all bases, really. There is something here for everyone, but it is still not going to make it easy for you. That's a good thing.
Fucking hell the hired pawns I have are retarded. I'm trying to be safe, not attacking the bandits near the fort and just going to the witchwood, but the two I hired just RUN straight at them as soon as their in sight.
Is there no way to change their behavior? The D-pad commands don't do anything to prevent it, and I die every time they do it because they aggreo 5-6 bandits.
I also assume that the monster at the bottom of the roundabout room under the capital, is not defeatable until later in the game (or higher level), cause as soon as I got there and it started showing up, my 3 pawns booked it to the exit before I did.
