Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

I'm cool with no lock-on but I hate the fact that Pawns keep telling me not to swing wildly. FUCK OFF PAWNS! I do what I want!!

I swear, I want to kick the shit out of some of these pawns and send them back to their masters crying.

I also assume that the monster at the bottom of the roundabout room under the capital, is not defeatable until later in the game (or higher level), cause as soon as I got there and it started showing up, my 3 pawns booked it to the exit before I did.

I assume it is. I pretty much left them in the dust trying to run up the stairs.

Fucking hell the hired pawns I have are retarded. I'm trying to be safe, not attacking the bandits near the fort and just going to the witchwood, but the two I hired just RUN straight at them as soon as their in sight.

Is there no way to change their behavior? The D-pad commands don't do anything to prevent it, and I die every time they do it because they aggreo 5-6 bandits.

I dont seem to have this problem with my pawns. Maybe the ones you hired are set up to be more aggressive?
When you send them back to the rift, rate their helpfulness low and see if there are any message options to reflect why. Maybe youll get the creators to change the behavior some.

The knowledge chair is kind of annoying. They should just let you go through all the questions and pick how you want them to act, instead of just throwing a random two or three at you and then making you re-try over and over until you get the one you want to change.

Yea, I spent about 30 minutes trying to do it the other night, finally gave up and just bought the pots at the encampment to set stuff.

I....I went to far....too deep....too fast.

I'm at the bluemoon tower or something, and The only quests I've done in gran soren have been escort missions, everytime I go on a long mission I get sidetracked and explore my surroundings...now Im stuck on the completely opposite side of the world.

so many ogre fight highlights, and in that cave especially. i've never had Throwblast before, but my eye opener came when i was climbing on an ogre's back. In most games i'll just get swatted at or fall off once my stamina runs out but in this game the ogre jumped backwards into the air, slamming down on it's back with me still on him.

i was very dead obviously but still that surprised the shit out of me

Yep, those damn ogres are indeed pretty deadly. The tide can turn on you in an instant and there are so many little nuances and things to consider in this game. It's going to be interesting to take on even more powerful and deadly foes later on, such as the Drake. This is a game that rewards patience and taking the time to grow. All with a tremendous risk/reward system, which is as it should be. But it rarely is in games like this these days.

I assume it is. I pretty much left them in the dust trying to run up the stairs.

really? cause i was down there for a long ass time killing tentacles. they just keep coming back. i turned off pawn subtitles because hell do those things take up screen room and fifteen minutes later I hear one of them scream that "they just keep coming back". Killed more on my way up the run too.

there is an awkward down time when you kill enough of the tentacles where they just stop emerging for awhile. gets eerie.

Eh? What pots?

Low level sorcery is hard as fuk!

In the encampment you can buy potions to set your pawn's actions.

No lock-on requires you to learn to be more precise. I have always had a thing for archery especially and love how you have to be a crack shot in this game. But those who want more of a lock-on can either go magic archer or fighter. Magic archer has full lock-on and fighter semi-locks on when you raise your shield.

I think the combat covers all bases, really. There is something here for everyone, but it is still not going to make it easy for you. That's a good thing.

Honestly, I'd rather have zero lock atm because the current setup just sucks. Fighting bandits or goblins, when they swarm you can't do shit because your blocks always keep trying to autotarget and you get spun around and around in circles(inevitably getting backstabbed).

I switched over to Strider/Ranger for a bit last night and the controls seem MUCH more fluid, but I don't really want to play that type of character(at least not atm).

Last night had an epic battle. Got stuck outside in the night battling all kinds of night creatures. Down to 120 hp, fingers tired from swinging the sword, inventory empty. I somehow took a wrong turn and ended up in a valley. I was making my way down through the valley when I realized I was heading away from the settlement.
Then the low singing started.
As dawn broke and the wind was whipping I fought off what seemed like endless harpies. Lost 1 pawn, then another, both made good impressions in their deaths. I exited the valley into a large field. I haven't felt so happy to see a full dawn ever.
Then a group of bandits and magic users. I got off a couple shots. I leapt into the air to finish one of the magic users and he shot me straight in the face with a fireball...man epic night.

I've been pretty lucky with my pawn experiences. They really seem to to have individual personalities at times.

Which seems completely ridiculous. I doubt that Capcom has managed to code in a detailed and seemingly unique behavioural model that learns over time in Dragon's Dogma but...yeah...kindof looks like it at times. *shrug*

What I WOULD like is a "stealth" type method of resolving combat. When you go stealth, all your pawns do as well.

A party of four murderous, sneaky fucking bastards would be marvelous when dealing with bandits...or...well...anything really.

I am still rolling Assassin and love having no lock-on. So far I have found out that if I screw up, I was just being hasty or simply got out-matched. If I am not powerful enough or on the losing end, I will retreat. If I die, I try again and eventually overcome and feel great about it.

Overall, there are a ton of skills, the vocation variety is fantastic and will offer gobs of replay value. It's fast, deep, challenging and very satisfying for me. Only gripe is the camera in tight corners is annoying sometimes. Other than that, this game is exactly what I wanted.

Speak for yourself - I wish that song was playing the entire game!

I'm only speaking about when the rock part rolls in. Everything before that was as it should be....musically fitting for the environment. ATM though, no game released this year can hold a candle to the musical score for FEZ. Talk about a masterpiece!!

Woah, wait. Is block lock-on off w/ Assassin? If so, I'll switch to that pronto.

so anyone else moved from xbox to ps3 version have comments? is it just minor slowdown (vs 360) but zero tearing?

the tearing got to me so I just bought the PS3 version, though wont be able to try it out until tommorow AAAAHHH work and outside commitments suck

So am I. When the song goes into full metal mode, it becomes awesome. Now THAT's a DLC package I can get behind: "Bad-ass music DLC", where it plays every time you get into a battle. lol

Speaking of DLC, I don't like how often the game reminds you that there's DLC available. It's not as bad as Dragon Age and it's "oh looks like you don't have that content installed!", but shit.. do I really have to be reminded so often? "If a pawn has foreign armor then it could be DLC! Hint hint wink wink!" -_-

Wow is this game just pure fun. Really glad I went ahead and bought it last night.

I feel like I got locked into some story quests as I didn't know what would happen if I didn't escort this wagon to Gran Soren. The lady made it seem like there was a lot of money to be had and since I was still wearing my rags I didn't want to take the chance of failing it. Glad I did as the escort and all the mobs leading up to Gran Soren netted me a lot of cash where I was able to finally upgrade my equipment. However, I wasn't left with enough cash to upgrade my pawn, and that is where the fun really began.

I've been running around the fields in search for loot and supplies, and now I'm taking the same lady who's wagon I escorted to Gran Soren on some type of scouting Mission. So now I've embarked on this journey, stopping at various establishments hoping to find some more quests along the way. Just having a blast so far venturing off with just my party and exploring the land.

Awesome game thus far and I can't wait to dive back in later today.

Well I tried two new ones. Same problem. Just running straight through to the bandits as soon as they're rock they stand on is in sight.

I can't do the witchwood quest now if all the pawns I hire are going to do this and get me killed. The boss bandit mixed in is too hard with 4 or 5 of his buddies helping him.

Ya the amount of money you can make just trolling around the fields and picking stuff up or killing random badguys is pretty insane.

Some hot female pawn to distract with a little song and dance to buy time whilst a Sorcerer conjures up something wicked behind their backs.

Alright so here are my stupid questions of the day:

When and how do I move from Strider to Ranger? My bow damage sucks with a strider.

Can I use healing consumables on my pawns from the select menu? I can't seem to figure out how to use an item on anyone but myself.

Whoever made them must have set them to aggressive behavior. I can't recall if you can see the behavior settings prior to hiring them or not.

You can only give it to them; they decide when to use it.

At level 10 you can. Change vocations at an inn.

Also, when my hired pawn is like "What else do you expect with my help?" when I'm the one who sniped everyone with my bow. lol

I noticed pawns run ahead when they know the quest at hand and where to go, but in this case it backfires because they run right into some bandits lol.

Just come back at night. You'll have to deal with a shitload of wolves but I found it to be more manageable than those dudes with the impenetrable armor. What's the deal with those fuckers anyway? I still don't understand why they're so overpowered.

I would have killed for my 2 hired pawns to know what was up with this mission beforehand because I had to drag those assholes kicking and screaming up 15 floors i sware to god.

Almost hit level 30 last night before i had to turn it off and get 3 hours of sleep for work today. My warrior pawn has been getting better and better but i'm not sure if i'm going to keep him warrior or roll him back to fighter because of the extra abilities and life span the shield grants you. Was really hoping i would be able to take my bow off my assassin and fit 3 more sword skills to him and just be crazy sword focused but alas... i'll just have to keep plugging away with the bow. Someone earlier mentioned talking about lockon and how it forces you to be precise and to that i say hell to the yes. Been waiting for a game like this to reward the fact that I am a dead eye with the dual shock. As soon as i realized head shots were MUCH better than your standard I started grooving my sights slightly upwards. As soon as I got the Lyncean vision/shot thing (spelling?) it was all over. If you've got no armor on your dome i'll put three in it before you get to me every time. Groups of bandits all get one in the face before I mop up.

archer skills:
5fold shot
Mighty bend
Lyncean sight

I tried the piercing shot but it just wasn't as effective as mighty bend. Poisin arrows helped but the effort to line up a shot was frustrating when 5fold+fire enchanted weapons = everything burns.

Sword skills:
Intimate strike (forget the name of the leveled up version - fyi BEST freakin skill ever. Such a fantastic tool)
the stinger
clarity/gouge/windmill depending on what i'm doing

As i said ... wish i could double up sword skills to 6 cause I love throwing fast crazy damage at assholes while i'm right up in their face then dipping out after some crowd control and coming back in at a different angle. gouge is a must for the large animals but useless the rest of the time so i have a hard time leaving it in my set but gat-damn is it nice when you run into a cyclops.

I've had so many good times with this game already I won't extend this post even longer by rambling on about them except to simply say - I knew i had something special and that I was really clicking with the gameplay as well when i was in the catacombs, getting tossed around and losing light constantly. Managed to maneuver around the 3rd large encounter room enough to have most of the undead directly in front of me, illuminated by the light from my hired pawns healing me into my last 300 hp...
step in with half a standard combo then Intimate strike and caught all 6 of them. The whole group. Writhing and twisting and shooting infected blood all over the room... all the soft green light. stood there and re-lit my lamp. Observed the now re-dead bodies all over the floor and smiled.

My kind of fucking game. So hawt.

(specific info about a mission
My Troublesome Tome mission glitched as I have read it is aught to do. I completely wiped out every female bandit in that piss ant little fort. searched everywhere and the chest on the tallest tower gave me some re-enforced ladies garments (looked like sophia's skirt from soul caliber). Ended up having to go all the way down to the male bandit fort, chattin with the leader then climbed THEIR tower and bam... tomes galore. I'm curious what makes this glitch happen... only thing i can think of is that i didn't attempt to talk to the female bandit leader. She had a red talk box above her the entire time i was cutting her and her team to ribbons.

For you guys that are broke, go out and kill big shit. I killed two ogre's, a chimera, and a bunch of bandits last night and when I got back to town I had over 200k in loot to sell.

I'm still in the general area of the capital too. I'm sure I'll be raking in much more cash later on as I venture further out into the wilds.

This dagger I picked up from Meladine (sp?) is crazy overpowered right now. It's got a permanent fire affect on it and sets everything on fire + does a crazy amount of damage. I'm sure it'll cease being useful once I fight something that's resistant to fire (if I do - nothing so far), but I'm a class A bad ass at the moment.

I'm also using the upgraded version of snare which is HOLY FUCKING SHIT awesome. It snares larger enemies too and pulls them towards you. So I just snare a bunch of enemies and then hack them all to death before they can even get back up.

Almost have strider maxed out too, so I can go (hopefully) go assassin tonight.

Well, they didn't run very fast, caught up with them about 1 floor up. Then I had the same issue. They kept getting attacked by "it", which would cause them to want to attack it. So it became a game of run up, run back and revive, run up, run back and revive, repeat 15 more times, escape!

You can just leave them behind and when you exit the area they'll show up next to you comatose. Just revive them and off you go. I left 'em behind when I ran up :p

I'm gonna start this game this weekend. As someone who gets easily turned off by a ton of management stuff, and little/no RPG experience, any starting recommendations?

I know that probably makes it sound like it's not a game for me, but I'd like to give it a shot, since the combat looks interesting.

I haven't actually noticed small text, but then again i'm only playing on a 24 inch monitor. sounds like a bigger tv problem? If you're on the 360 did you try making sure your video settings were right? i think it was Karak who has been posting about the auto detect setting as RGB when you really want a high def option. maybe give that a shot?

Ya it was. Setting it to the high def movie setting in the console settings(Found it! YCbCr709 is the setting I switched to and though Auto was supposed to do that normally it was obviously never working) Last night I spent a good amount of time in those settings and in AVG forums and various websites investigating all the problems they have caused for 360 owners. Blarg. MS. 1 step forward 1 step back sometimes.

Just one of dozens of threads with suggested settings. Post#9 has a good set of examples and some testing of the reference leveles, basic, intermediate and expanded. And some mentions of the actual HDMI Colorspace settings which is where I found some magic.
http://www.highdefforum.com/gaming-...lay-settings-hdmi-color-reference-levels.html

MS's official page for the settings so you can mess with them
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906663

One of the positives of messing with the colorspace setting is that colors are far more accurately set and some tv's need different settings than others. But in the end the clarity is GREATLY increased due to enhanced color separation. When I first switched mine even the text on the dashboard was almost to sharp. But when I went into the game, man it increased the look of the game dramatically. I then loaded up Red Dead, LA Noire, Crackdown and about a dozen others to check. All of them really popped on the screen. And I wasn't unhappy with my picture in the first place. DD was the first game that appeared off like I said back on page 17 here. Obviously you will of course have to slightly adjust your TV settings to fit your preference. But 5-10 minutes of fiddling can work wonders on a picture.

Lastly there is also a calibration test you can get from the "Community" Section on xboxlive. Under "T" for Television calibrations.

Oh my goodness. As much as I think people should play this game...you might be picking something up that you don't like...at all.

There is a fair amount of item management and much of it is left up to you to discover on your own.

Ok, just started the game. Wandered off to the first encampment north, got my first Main Pawn and did some of the training the one fellas there offers. Went to rest and fought some crazy ass Hydra that went rampaging through. I (somehow) defeated it at only Lvl 4 fighter, and now trying to wander about completing some of the quests I learned of in Cassardis, but I get ravaged trying to fight wolves, or those croc-looking things in the well. Seems like I can't do much other than fight goblins.

What's recommended for me at this point? Any quests or things I should be doing instead?

Thus far, I have basic purchased equipment from the Cassardis main shop.

I also tend to avoid strat guides and online walkthroughs. So that won't be an option for me.

Help me, Dogma-GAF!!! :)

The combat is not as good as Demon's souls/Dark Souls, but it's far better than Dragon Age.
if you're focused on combat and not so much stat management, I'd probably go for Dark Souls instead.

The hydra might be a timed fight. it goes down long before you put a dent in it's HP. the next thing you should be doing is escorting that cart/hydra head to the next town. you do so with a large contingent of NPC fighters and can hire extra pawns, so its easy. After that you should have enough XP and decent equipment to start sidequesting.
