Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Does anyone know why I was able to hire a prawn like 30 levels above my level for 0 RC? She goes down easily but packs a wallop.

Planned to buy this today, but bought Deus Ex Human Revolution Augmented Edition instead.

I'm sorry Dogma GAF. I'll be with you in a month when it's LTTP perhaps, :(

The lack of fast travel is exactly WHY I am enjoying myself so much. I can run past weaker enemies if I want or easily kill them for reagents. But the constant travel just feels right now me. And I love Skyrim but this just feels perfect with the portstones allowing you to do some quick but limited fast travel as a medium solution.

It's why I'm not enjoying it much at all anymore. There's currently 4 escort quests in the starting fishing village. To do each means I have to run there, do the escort which is very far away, then run all the way back to the fishing village. It's stupid game design.

What class is it? A squishy character is going to die easily regardless of level if enemies are pounding on them.

Mage of some sort, and yeah it might have been a friend. Pretty crazy, it's actually making the game a bit more enjoyable since it's not frustratingly hard any more.

I wonder what the difference is between my tank going off and coming back with a couple hundred RCs and the times he's come back with 20+ thousand.

About 40 hours into the game, first playthrough and taking my time. I am level 39 and I thought things were getting easy. Hadn't explored at all in certain regions of the map, but I was having a relatively easy time with most enemies in my regular travel spots; goblins, wolves, bandits, cyclops, etc.

Then I went to Bluemoon Tower........love this game. :D

Just put the Port Crystal down at Cassardis and use a Ferrystone to Fast Travel back at the end of each escort.

Okay cool, I'm just going to put my data on a USB stick.

Don't want to bother with another PSN profile because I'm lazy. Going to go Strider -> Ranger this time around as I played a good deal of Sorcerer and Magick Archer the first time.

I don't have the game yet, but I was thinking of being a Strider and progressing to an Assassin (sword and bow). Is this cool or would being a Fighter help me more in the end?

Those dont exist in my game yet.

I don't want to say where you can get one, if you feel it's spoilerish, so I'll spoiler tag it.
You get one in Bluemoon Tower during/after the Quest "Griffon's Bane". It's a relatively early story quest (perhaps a little closer to the middle of the storyline?).

Honestly the lack of fast travel wouldn't bug me so much if every enemy encounter didn't happen in the exact same place every time. Doing the quests around Gran Soren and such, I've memorized every goblin pack, wolf attack, etc... it's really droll. It doesn't help that the game throws enemies at you all the time. I know you can run past low-level stuff, but it's still kind of annoying - I've tried setting my pawn to be as passive as possible because he really likes to engage fucking everything.

But yeah, the escort missions really highlight why some form of fast travel might be nice. Cart rides maybe? I appreciate what they're going for; Skyrim totally lost its luster after a while with the ability to travel from anywhere, but god damn if trekking around the same roads doesn't get boring after a while.

The pre-planned nature of a lot of the open world is turning me off a little bit, actually. I did an escort mission for Mercedes where, halfway up the road,
a griffon appeared overhead.
It was really awesome, and I decided to try and fight it, but Mercedes died so I reloaded my last save, which was at Gran Soren's gate. I didn't mind, because I was feeling "wow! What a crazy turn of open-world events". Lo and behold, though,
a griffon attacked in the exact same spot in the road,
so I just picked up Mercedes and hauled ass to the mine because I didn't want to reload and do everything all again. The sense of foreboding while traveling is really hindered by the fact that a lot of things like that seem heavily scripted.

On the other hand, that careful game design does mean that there are usually much more interesting things to find if you go off exploring, as opposed to the glorious nothingness that inhabits 90% of an Elder Scrolls or Amalur or whatever.

Exists in a perpetual state of Quantum Crotch Uncertainty.
(This post is re: the trial quest.)

Goddamn, that explains it. One of my pawns mentioned that they've heard people talking about
Fournival
in Cassardis, so I took a trip there and found no one because I haven't finished the
gardener
quest yet because I can't remember what I combined to make
skeleton keys
. There was even a quest marker there at some point, but it must've been referring to
the traveling merchant
, who was gone by time I arrived. Waste of a trip.

I had something really similar happen where I
collected the evidence and turned down the dude in Cassardis
, then saw a quest marker appear at Greatwall. So I trekked all the way there only to discover
that it was just Reynard out wandering about and mucking up my quest markers.

He and I are no longer on speaking terms because of that.

Ah, that makes sense, then. Pretty sure it was nighttime, too.

So, I did the quest Trials and Tribulations. The accused
Fournival
was found guilty, even though I purchased the
writs of innocence from Reynard
. The bastard led me to believe I could swing it either way I wanted with these.

Did you
turn in any of the condemnations, and did you get all of the legitimate petitions for his release on top of the fake ones
? From the context of the quest and the dialogue afterward I'm pretty sure that
Fournival's supposed to be really hard to get acquitted
. When I did it I think I turned in
three legit petitions for release, one witness in his favor, and two forged petitions for his release, which was enough to get him off the hook. Aldous never even laid eyes on a single piece of negative evidence.

Now hold up a minute, this seems a little off. I get a quest called "
Duchess
in Distress" where you are supposed to, I assume,
save the duchess from the northern manse where she's locked away using the soldiers garb Mirabelle gives you.
But the thing is, as soon as I am given the quest, it fails. Why is this happening?

EDIT: If it helps any, I just did "Deny Salvation" because this wasn't available before it.

I just unlocked
Duchess in Distress
as soon as I started
Deny Salvation
and it didn't automatically fail. I talked to
Aldous, started Deny Salvation, and saw the Duchess' maid hanging out with a bubble over her head on the way out and picked up Duchess in Distress. It didn't automatically fail.

It sounds like that quest has a really narrow window of opportunity. I appreciate the indirect hint about which of my two major quests I should tackle first though. Your sacrifice is not in vain.

Cart travel would have been great. There should be carts at Cassardis, Gran Soren, The Great Wall, and maybe The Blighted Manse.

Haha, I just went with what I purchased. Should have figured it'd be harder than that. Something to keep in mind for a NG+, thanks.

I'm about to go to Bluemoon Tower, the griffin quest, how far along am I (half, three quarters?) I'm absolutely loving the game.

Also I can't believe that there's a fucking tooltip in the game that pops up every now and then telling you about DLC.

Those popups became annoying in general. I turned off the tutorial messages, and haven't gotten any about DLC, either.

holy crap just found the golem..that was hard :(

Golems are extremely easy if you're a Ranger. Ten Fold Arrow on those medals, and they go down like nothing.

I left them on because I think they're pretty helpful, but I've seen the DLC one about three times. Talk about ballsy.

Yeah, they definitely were at first. Eventually all they were was "If you come to an impasse in your quest, mark it a priority" and the DLC plug.

Sadly thats a quest design issue and not the lack of fast travel, but I think everyone agrees there are some issues with the quests. Maybe with a sequel they will get the quests done correctly. Or add mounts. I certainly hope they don't add a fast travel to the sequel even with the price of the stones it can be seriously misused.

Yeah, I'm really starting to see all the problems the game has that it got dinged for in many reviews. Walking the same exact paths over and over and over and facing the same exact enemies in the same exact place who exhibit the same exact behavior over and over. The game is great fun when I'm experiencing new locations, but unfortunately the majority of the game has been spent going over the same damn territory repeatedly, and quite honestly the terrain isn't all that interesting, and after about 5 hours you've pretty much seen every enemy the game has to offer.

When it's an option *you* have an option not to use it.

Yeah, I've turned off tutorial messages and that fucking message still is popping up. I don't want your damn haircuts and fetch quests, Capcom.

Who did they commission to localize this game? Does Capcom have an in-house localization staff? Honestly, a lot of it feels like the English was written as the primary language. I started out playing it in Japanese, and a lot of the text was very different from what was being said in English. Honestly, it got kind of distracting, so right now I'm playing in all English, and the localized names are really excellent. Considering how much Capcom gets a bad rap for their localizations, I'm quite impressed.

I'm a HUGE fan of Dark Souls and Song of Ice and Fire. Main question, will I enjoy this?

I should damn well hope so. The writing style certainly seems heavily influenced by how GRRM writes, and there are a lot of things that should give you a Dark Souls vibe.

It's got it's fair share of flaws, but it's really an excellent game.

I'm pretty sure the entire game was written in English and is subtitled in Japan.

No on both counts. The story is garbage, the dialogue is crap. Nothing at all like George's masterpiece. As for Dark Souls, nope. Dark Souls requires vigilance from start to finish. Around level 15 in this game you'll start to feel like a god. You can let your guard down and just be stupid etc, which you can rarely if ever do in a Souls game. I don't view that as a negative against DD though. I didn't go into this wanting a Souls game.

I have to say that one thing I really like is that when you go to a shopkeeper to upgrade your armor and weapons, you don't need your materials with you. They'll pull them out of storage for you.

Ya I think thats why I like it so much. When the option is there you will take it. When its not there you have to work around it.

yeah, this is up your alley, though it really doesn't have much in common with ASOIAF except for some of the language/dialogue.

The storyline is not the strong point here- there's no deep conspiracies or political intrigue to be had- just exploration and sidequests galore.

the game is a solid 8/10 for me, which by no means is a bad thing. Dark Souls is the better game in just about every area i can think of, though.

Working around the boredom means for many of us simply not doing anymore of the quests that require us to be bored again. The choice would mean you could do those quests without fast travel, and I could still do them with fast travel. Make a rule that says you cant fast travel at night and keep the danger, but for god's f***ing sake stop making me travel the same boring stretches of road 10-20 times. Where Dark Souls was such a huge success was level design. It took a long time to get many places, but once you got there shortcuts opened up to make subsequent travel there much faster. This game needs that.

There is a lot of Darksouls vibe but after beating this and Darksouls finally I have to say I enjoy the combat a great deal more and just the general gameplay in DD much more.

As for the story. Its not super. Its ok at best. However, some of the quests are very interesting(others not so much), but no the story isn't that great. The gameplay is in my opinion.

Is there any fast travel that doesn't cost 20k gold?

Spending 20 minutes running past/killing easy wolves/goblins is enough for me to say fuck it and not even bother turning the quest in.

This and Dark Souls are perfect examples of games I think are amazing one minute (basically the boss/epic battles in both games) and complete and utter garbage the rest of it.

As for the ASOIAF fan? Maybe, but it won't be for the story. The few story heavy moments have been really poor so far and I would be shocked if any of the political intrigue from the series had any influence or resemblance to anything from the game. Shield/swords and shit though /shrug.

Ya everyone has their own opinion on it for sure but it is what it is and the game we are playing is what we have. If its boring there are tons of games to play. Then maybe a sequel will fix the quests. And hopefully have a better more in depth story!

you can buy the stones for 10k from the merchant in the noble quarter.

on top of that, there's another item that can be found during the griffin quest that allows you to set another waypoint to fast travel to.

set that waypoint at one of the out of the way spots, and you cut your travel time significantly.
