Drake - Take Care - 11-24-11 [Drake's Sophomore album]

Frankly, I'm getting fucking tired of people calling artists soft. Im not a big Drake fan, but calling him soft just because of what he chooses to write about is frustrating. This goes for any artist really. If a certain artist isn't talking about things you want to hear, listen to another one. Being "Soft" isn't a valid criticism.

Luckily he's the greatest his country's ever seen.

Exactly. If it's not "hard" it's not hip hop. Fuck someone speaking their mind on a track, go make a pop song with that shit.
Not for nothing .. But how could he ever really be
"hard" and claim to be real at the same time
Grew up in a priveledged household and was on a nickelodeon show - if he was hard, he would get laughed at (not by girls though)

That's nice and all but this is the same Drake I've been bored with for the last year. He didn't switch up anything and the songs sounding like a continous loop from one to the other isn't being cohesive, it's tired. This is an album that's forgettable in no time.
I'm with the "this isn't the guy I've been listening to for the past few months" camp. I call this a return to So Far Gone form.

I don't know how you can criticize this for not having a message and then big up TML at the same time. Drake is talking about some real emotional things on here you probably can't relate to I'm guessing. People are hating on the title track here is odd to me cause that shit is incredibly relatable, gave me goosebumps.

I relate to a lot of Drake, sadly. Marvins Room is actually very similar to things I've done in the past. If songs about ex loves and heartbreak aren't your thing, Drake isn't for you. Don't let the Young Money label fool you, he is a lot different than what that label portrays.

Yeah I think 808s comparisons are very apt in all regards to this album. If your not into the subject matter and musical direction, you should stop anticipating something it's not. Sux2bu though because all your favorite artists are soft :P

Btw, what was your opinion on 808s, Recon?

Aside from like 2 tracks, I thought 808s was brilliant.

I know GAF-Hop doesn't give a shit about my opinion but holy shit this thing is left field. Some shit I thought I'd never say:

Top 10, possibly top 5.

Yes, this is Drizzy's 808s in all the right ways.

Possibly better than Cole World. Definitely better than TML.

Yes, Take Care is gonna be a huge single, shit gave me goosebumps no lie. Theres some real shit on this album.

The production is surprisingly none of that muddy 40 and Boi-1da shit, and is really good and more importantly, thematic. Unsurprisingly, production channels 808s in a lot of places, which is only a good thing. Lord Knows isn't even my favourite production (that'd probably be Crew Love) and it's still incredible.

Stevie Wonder feature was disappointing but not bad by anymeans. Next time, consult the The Big Bang.

I'd hazard at calling it nearly perfectly structured and sequenced if it wasn't for the expectedly shitty Weezy verses on The Real Her. Surprise: Andre 3000 verse wasn't as bad as I expected (considering every otter verse people have been apologetic for recently) or people are saying, but that last line kills it :/

I have a feeling Toku is gonna love this shit.

This. I feel exactly the same way.

You know I love his musical direction and overall production. The problem with most rap music, especially pop songs is that there is just an overall lack of concept. I love "Headlines" but put the lyrics and the title on a piece of paper and read. It's probably one of the better songs on the album and it's like he doesn't even know what he's talking about. This isn't an issue I have specifically with Drake but if you are going to slow it down and do something "soft" please write some actual lyrics instead of just saying words because ambiance rhymes with audience.

Exactly and the artists who do make aggressive content are labeled "real music"...phrases like "about time the streets gets some real music" can go to hell.

I ride for that "good music" anyday

It's just kids trying to act hard.

You're missing the point again recon. Soft rappers doing soft music is all gravy. The problem occurs when soft ass rappers try to hard music. Look at Game, j.cole and big sean. Nothing wrong with bathtub raps man. Problem is bathtub rappers trying to do street shit.

i'm liking this album a lot more than TML. nicki minaj is terrible tho.. not like make me proud was gonna be that good of a song anyway, but she makes it unlistenable.

Dude Drake spent half the Bar mitzvah paycheck to help his brother beat the case. He really lives that life dude.

You will never know a point with an attitude like that. You are stuck in your mindset, look at the names you are bringing up.

it's the first song with her on it I find tolerable. actually, I might even say I enjoy it.

jokes on him cause it wasn't very good and theres a bunch of better songs on this than that

Yup. I enjoy The Weeknd just like the rest of the universe but there is much better stuff out there, including on this tape.

listening to this pretty stoned and i'm on the second song and i logged on facebook and see so many people talking about the leak and these showed me that Drake is like the Justin Bieber of rap and sometimes i fall into the trap myself. Some tracks of his I can't stop bouncin my head to but then songs like this second track makes him so soft. Basically what common's sweet song describes:

I enjoyed the weeknd when he wrote hooky music but now he just leans on drawn out 'atmosphere' and its really just so tiring and disappointing.

This is whats wrong with hip-hop. Fucking dumb ass attitudes like that.

Check out Dropxlife, he rolls with all them Candadian boys, I think they are LEGO Gang. Mixtape is called Pawncho.

I think I miscommunicated the names. Those would be examples where keepin it real goes very very wrong. The biggest struggle J.Cole ever went through was deciding which iPhone to get.

Truth. <3 Yoda.

Thanks, and yeah, i don't care if people like other artists and dislike artists i like. But at least have some criticisms that are intelligent, and not "omg he so soft, he talks about girls".

I have Kamps on ignore, what is he bitching about now? Let me guess:

1.Eminem is a puppet/Jimmy Iovine conspiracy
2. Something J.Cole is soft, Something something Soft
3. Something ignorant and stupid.

I feel if its any of those it reaffirms my decision on throwing him and domino on the ignore.

So here is my thoughts on the album.

What the fudge Drake, you had all the time in the world to get inspired by real fucking production wiz kids and once again it just seams like you are borrowing from them. And it is always XL why?!

First you pull BTSU and butcher it. Then you do ok on Wildfire and now Rihanna is singing Gil? Why?!!!!

Decent album I guess but it is going to have to grow on me. I had bigger expectations on this. Same old Drake.

A litle bit of b.

But now you've ruined the guessing game on who you hate in GAF-Hop. What did Domino ever do though?

The more I think about it...Cole World is a pretty boring/forgettable album for the most part. He can be so much better, oh well let's see on the sophomore effort.

This one surprised me, I really fucking hated Drake's debut. It was corny and overplayed on Canadian radio so the combination led to contempt from me but this one is moody as fuck and I'm in the phase where I enjoy that at the moment. I wouldn't put it in top 5 or probably even top 10 albums of the year but I'm still liking it.

Domino i just find so profoundly stupid in every way imaginable. He is the only one from Gaf-Hop i find lacking so much, intellectually, that i can't suffer his posts any longer. I also do not fuck with the Gaf-Hop thread any more, too many new people talking out their ass.

I bet he put me and Dom on ignore right before he posted that knock-off Grieves ablum cover.

I haven't even heard Take Care yet, but I'm pretty sure I'll like it. I bumped the wheels off most of Thank Me Later.

Pretty ignorant. Hard? No, but it shouldn't all sound exactly the same. He just repeats himself and his emo act is getting incredibly old. lol, speaking their mind? He has some sort of important message he puts out there? He says the same crap over and over again, this isn't a dude with a message.
So you call him soft as a criticism but then say he doesnt necessarily need to be hard. Okay I guess. Andnow hes repetetive too... Soft, repetetive, emo... You should have saved yourself some time and called him pretentious or something, it would have had the same amount of substance as your other criticisms.

And yes he is speaking his mind, a lot of these songs are pretty personal. You dont have to have some profound message to speak your mind. My point is hes being himself as an artist rather than releasing shit that panders to people like you who want him to fit into some stereotype of a "hard" rapper. If you dont dig his shit thats fine but if you feel the need to convince other people of your opinion at least put some effort into it.

STFU with all this "this is wrong with hip hop" attitude. I can't take Drake seriously because he talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk. When someone calls him soft we mean hes a hypocrite. i aint got no problem with party mindless hip hop as long the artist is bein real. Come on you really gonna act like that OVOXO shit is some street gang? they dont know shit bout gangs! tryna act like all street and shit.
Read Common's track 'sweet' it desribes what i'm saying better:
How can I say this, fuck it I’m the greatest
I am the A-list for all these great debaters
A lot of ya’ll nah nah, forgot na, who I am
The ’87 nigga used to rah rah in the jam
Ow yeah, we put them things in the air
When I drop a single, it’s really like a pair
Of Air Jordans, important to the culture
If you aint true to it, callate la boca
Get my drink on like a coaster[
Post up on a wall, a mic, used to live off
Hip Hop Master ?, I’mma get my shit off

Rollin’ in a Maserati Gran with the lid off
I bit off like a monster, live nigga this is my encore
Encore, encore, I rhyme for the commoners
My name synonymous with prominence
I’m to hip hop what Obama is to politics
Common is

Yeah, man, y’all niggas man, you soft muthfuckers
Yeah my man, muthafcker
Then come around my crib
You know where I’m from
Some hoes ass niggas
Singing all around me man, la la la
You aint muthaf-cking Frank Sinatra
Uh, lil bitch
Yeah, this the raw right here
Yeah this the raw right here nigga
Sweet muthafuckas
Sweet ass bitch muthafucka

[Common - Verse 2]
Wa da da da, wa dada dada da
The C-O double-M O-N, I’m not playin’
Da da man at work, I make my own lane
I’m the franchise so I rock my own chain
No I. said give ‘em that 80′s cocaine
Somethin’ raw, something pure so I stayed in that vain
The hero that he know, that he cold
like winters below in the Geo, wipe ya feet off in the Regal
I’m king, observe the throne and the dream
I have it, supreme like mathematics
Yeah, I rep the fresh air for you asthmatic rap addicts
Pro black magic, this is semi-automatic
Rap we won’t jam in traffic
The game need direction, I’m here to map it
Uh, some people say that they be missing creativity
But when it come to hip hop, it begins and it’s with me
Sweet

[Outro]
You know man, you should know where I come from
You should know who I am nigga
You should never wanna go against me
You know man, you too soft for that man
I be seeing you man, I see it in your eyes man
You aint the type of nigga to go against me
You get in my presence you gon’ feel like a little hoe
You aint a man yet, you tryna be somebody else
Man, be yourself man, you come around my crib, you get your shit took
Huh, wherever you go, you probably be overseas in Europe and get yo shit took
You’s a hoe, you know you sweet
Aint nothing you can do man, people see that man
Broads be seeing you sweet
Done wit’ you muthafuckas, it’s over for you
It’s over for you? It’s over, sweet muthafucka

A lot of the stories sound really personal and I like those songs. The song about his grandmother or aunt or whoever taking care of him in the summertime was awesome. It's the super slowed down stuff with no real meaning besides "this is for the bitches" that comes across as weak to me. If you wanna stretch your abilties and be judged as a proper artist (commercial or not), you are going to be judged like everyone else. Last time I checked Jamie XX was doing a live art collaboration, Radiohead remixes, and doing entire album of remixes for Gil Scott-Heron...Drake has a handful of good songs and an ear for melody.

After listening through the whole album 2-3 times, I still believe that Over My Dead Body is the best track. It gives me vibes of the So Far Gone mixtape.

I find it hilarious how people say Drake is soft

My question is when did he ever say he was hard???

He never released any Young Jeezy/Rick Ross/ whatever music before that made him some hard rapper he has always been a rapper/singer so how can people all of a sudden be surprised when he sings.

Seriously are we forgetting that the song that blew him up was Best I Ever Had??

When he came out he was singing all over the place and nobody was saying anything back then. He came out singing all over Successful w/ Trey Songz, Best I Ever Had, Houstatlantavegas, etc.

Just because he started rapping more lately the last year with Lil Wayne doesn't mean anything. He has always been a mix of rapping/singing.

I could get behind this.

The best thing to come out of this album is Jerome Potters (LOL Boys) DJ Dodger Stadium Edit coming out on Body High.

Can you imagine if Drake had the nuts to actually release stuff like that? Would change the world.
