First listen done, and I'm not feeling it. But then again, Thank Me Later was something that I didn't enjoy at first, but it grew on me later. Maybe this will be the same way.

Jamie ended up on the album after all? Which song?

It's the title track. It's a radio love song with Rihanna. Pretty whack aside from the ending which liberally uses sampled Heron vocals (which will no doubt be cut from the radio edits). I mean if you are going to sample a song at least give it a year. That album came out at the beginning of this year.

Well Drake and Jamie have been hanging out...

excellent album overall. definitely will be in my top 5 in the year-end post.

lmao @ him sampling Back Dat Azz Up
he went hard as fuck on HYFR, Lord Knows & Underground Kings. and We'll Be Fine

Holy shit, listening to the first track of the album with headphones is.. whoa! I love the production on it.
Amazing intro track.

I thought the Rihanna track was terrible though.

Well I'm not saying i don't like other songs on the album, I just don't like his bad singing half rapping songs with female pop star on the hook songs.
That's like 90% of his songs.

well all I am saying is that he probably asked Jamie if he can have that sample, so I am sure he's cool with it -- if he likes the end-result that is :D

And that sample is beautiful. I really need to get my hands on that album, I didn't really have much time to listen to music when it came out but I do love me some xx.

Well Jamie got paid. Diplo was probably fine with letting Beyonce take Pon de Floor because he got paid. I wouldn't care if I actually liked the song. Drake obviously has great taste in production I just think an original production would have been more exciting. I was excited about hearing Diplo working on the Beyonce album but hearing a reworked year old song was incredibly disappointing.

Well of course an original production by Jamie would've been more exciting, but I think 99% of the people listening to Drake won't know and some will probably even find Gil Scott-Heron/The xx through that song, just look at the YouTube comments for I Will Take Care of U.
It's win-win for everyone involved, really.

6 songs in and the album's pretty dece. Many of the songs start out a bit slow (I don't mean beat wise) but then they get good.
I really don't mind the introspective or "emo" Drake as some call him.
I'll edit this or post again when I finish my first listening of the album, cause Kendrick's verse is about to start.
HYPE!

Lord Knows that beat is going be on my brain for weeks. Can't believe that isn't a Kanye production.

Edit:

WTT and Carter 4 didn't really have leaks..

Carter 4 sold like crazy maybe in part of that..
I don't know man. These days you get 3 singles, plus two or three more tracks released before the album or the 'leak' is even out. J Cole seemed to do alright despite his album leaking early too. I just don't get the feeling that many people who don't buy the album because they got a leak a week earlier wouldn't have just waited a day or two after the album is officially out to illegally download it anyway.

Lord Knows:

"I'm hearin all of the jokes I know that they trying to push me,
I know that showin emotion don't ever mean I'm a pussy
Know that I don't make music for n****s who don't get pussy,
So those are the ones I count on to diss me or overlook me"

Good stuff.

EDIT: yeah man Lord Knows beat is nuts

Really? This is like a textbook JB beat. Kinda reminds me of Exhibit C
yeah, you're right :) i had no idea just blaze was working with drake for the album so I was pleasantly surprised when I heard it.

I thought you were just being good ol' Recon with this post, but damn were you right, that was bad.
Seriously? WTF is Andre doing, I'm not even hyped for his album anymore because all the features he does are this shit nowadays. What the hell happened to 3 stacks ...:(

Seriously though how is Take Care not the lead single on this album?

It's probably smarter not to lead with the most surefire hit for an album that is destined to be a hit to begin with.

Headlines -> Take Care -> Make Me Proud.

Just watch.

LMAO@Andre's verse. Its really bad.
Worst part about it, is that lately I think people have been calling Andre, asking for him to lay down a verse, thinking that they'll get something like he did on International Player's Anthem or A Day in the Life of Benjamin Andre. I don't even think Andre wants to rap, he just fulfills people's requests because he doesn't want to come off as mean.

There's a certain Irony with Rihanna singing about hurting someone else on a track with Drake
KuGsj.gif

I love that song though, gonna have to look into the Gil Scott Heron version for sure.

Really liking this album a lot. Plenty of songs I don't really like but at least half of them are good listens. Definitely can't say that about his first album.

fuck, i keep hoping he'll drop something like he did on those again...i refuse to believe dude doesn't have it in him anymore, just reminds me of the RZA where his mind's clearly somewhere else at the moment & id like to hear what he brings when he comes back down.

I know GAF-Hop doesn't give a shit about my opinion but holy shit this thing is left field. Some shit I thought I'd never say:

Top 10, possibly top 5.

Yes, this is Drizzy's 808s in all the right ways.

Possibly better than Cole World. Definitely better than TML.

Yes, Take Care is gonna be a huge single, shit gave me goosebumps no lie. Theres some real shit on this album.

The production is surprisingly none of that muddy 40 and Boi-1da shit, and is really good and more importantly, thematic. Unsurprisingly, production channels 808s in a lot of places, which is only a good thing. Lord Knows isn't even my favourite production (that'd probably be Crew Love) and it's still incredible.

Stevie Wonder feature was disappointing but not bad by anymeans. Next time, consult the The Big Bang.

I'd hazard at calling it nearly perfectly structured and sequenced if it wasn't for the expectedly shitty Weezy verses on The Real Her. Surprise: Andre 3000 verse wasn't as bad as I expected (considering every otter verse people have been apologetic for recently) or people are saying, but that last line kills it :/

I have a feeling Toku is gonna love this shit.

Really feeling this, the beats for the most part are all on point.

Over the next day or so I can really take in the lyrics to make my judgement.

First listen done and I really liked it. So much better than TML. you can tell Drake is a lot more confident with everything on this album. But above all I'm just so glad that none of the beats SOUND like a 40 beat with that snare and shit. I don't know who produced the songs but its nice.

I wanna say the album dies down after "lord knows", but that was my first listen to the whole album.

Overall good shit

Yup, one of the better aspects are the 40 beats not sounding like 40 beats. Dude is showing some range.

first listen and its incredible. title track is balls but ill take a better listen throughout the week. i always thought TML was whack but this album makes that sound like some rushed shit

yep, thats what im getting too

I like Drake and it's a good thing I do because Toronto radio is like 'all drake - all the time' thanks to the Canadian Broadcasting content laws. The man can be on an hour-long loop either fronting or featured. I've gone up and down the dial and heard him three different times. Guy can't fail with that much air.

Pretty boring album... definitely getting too much love here. Say what you want about TML but it at least had some songs with life in them. This album just certifies Drake continuing his path towards being the softest dude ever in hiphop... Actually he should definitely not be considered a hiphop artist anymore. He's more like a poor mans Maxwell now.

What is this I don't even.

TML was a commercially constructed album. Ladies songs for the ladies, bangers for the dudes, Fireworks and not much else. What you may define as something full of life, I define as lacking in soul or any sort of passion or direction. Take Care rectifies that while still being more sonically sound and thematically cohesive all the way through.

Luckily he's the greatest his country's ever seen.

Exactly. If it's not "hard" it's not hip hop. Fuck someone speaking their mind on a track, go make a pop song with that shit.

That's nice and all but this is the same Drake I've been bored with for the last year. He didn't switch up anything and the songs sounding like a continous loop from one to the other isn't being cohesive, it's tired. This is an album that's forgettable in no time.

Pretty ignorant. Hard? No, but it shouldn't all sound exactly the same. He just repeats himself and his emo act is getting incredibly old. lol, speaking their mind? He has some sort of important message he puts out there? He says the same crap over and over again, this isn't a dude with a message.
