Lupita is fine but the girl in the OP is fine also. And you should address you prejudice view of black women that you keep avoiding.

The vast majority of black girls don't have light skin, green eyes, and brown curls. So no, that animated character in the OP isn't fine. We need more dark girls on the big screen.

It also bothers me that Dreamworks feels they should get a pat on the back for it.

If you're going to get so upset about what I'm posting, at least read what I'm posting. I said that the combination of light skin, light eyes, and brown curly hair as expressed on this animated character are signs of racial intermixture.

When I think of a black woman, I think of a woman of Lupita Noyong'o's phenotype and general appearance. I would like to see more women of that phenotype/appearance in the media.

I'm sorry if that offends you.

It doesn't matter who you think of as a black woman. Black women come in far more varieties than Lupita. That you don't seem to get that is quite frankly insulting.

Yeah they should have made a black girl as token as they come.

My point is that women that look like Lupita are greatly underrepresented in the media.

Yeah they should have made a black girl as token as they come.

Why do you feel that a girl looking like Lupita Nyong'o would be "token", but a more mixed appearing black character wouldn't be?

Black characters in general are underrepresented in the media. You quibbling over whether she is mixed or not is a particularly stupid point to argue over. It only causes derision and division when the this film should be happily celebrated.

Would it be correct to make a statement like "when I think of white women, I think of Malin Akerman and any variation outside of that is just not white enough."

Thats just an ignorant way of approaching this subject, the genetic variation of black african(let alone black people around the world) is large & varying.

I have 2 aunts at least two or three shades lighter than me. My second cousin is slightly fairer skinned than me but my hair type is fairer than his.

I was born yellow boned but grew darker(like 5 shades) into my teens.

I'm from east africa brah.

We're not hard coded to all look the same and have one distinguishable feature. Those are stereotypes for a reason.

The moment you take a step outside that bubble of preconcived notions and understandings, you will see the world is a lot larger than you imagined it.

If you watch the documentary "Dark Girls" by Oprah Winfrey, you'll see why this film shouldn't be celebrated.

Black people are underrepresented. Hell, the title of this thread tells you all you need to know about that. But you're complaining because she's not black enough? That's just disrespectful.

She looks black enough to me. Hell, she's even darker than me and I'm black.

She just got her hair did for the movie, that's all.

True, but when we do get represented, least for female characters, it's almost always the ones with light skinned and eurocentric features.

Black enough?

Or must she have Lupita's hair too?

Dude, Tiana has the worst animated hair of all the disney princesses. Her hair is a bun and it stays a bun with like zero movement. Which is weird considering Disney's princess hair game is usually on point. Even weirder considering a lot of the concept art for the movie had her with nice natural hair.

green eyes and the second image she's light skin. Not black bro.

Cate Blanchette's natural hair colour is slightly dirty blonde... might be an ethnic mix...

Not white enough.

You can't forget all those white people with curly hair. Most of white people i've seen don't have curly hair.(seriously) That is not natural they must be mixed.

And those high cheekbones... must be that australian aborigine in her.

Just sayin'

Because is made by white people. They will try to get a version of character that resemble the definition of their beuty the most. Nothing wrong with that.

Just look at all asian in hollywood. Ugly as fuck. Noone even come near to the worl of jpop kpop stuff. But yeah thats how western see beuty from asian. So we are fine. Not sure why moan. Create your own version if it does represent what u like.

It's fair to say that the only way a girl can have those set of features shown by the character in the OP is to be a child of pretty equal white European and black African heritage.

That's a real shame. The more natural-looking hair did look a lot better than the bun they stuck her in throughout the movie.

I wonder what led to that decision. Might be worth looking into a bit more.

?

Read my post above.

So then what color would you put in the us? African? Latina? It's a nasty can if worms you opened with little explanation and the one you do doesn't hold up at all. If other 3d movies don't change their main character then why should this one?

Also meh at Rihanna, I can inky hope she does good work.

Well, I don't know about the movie but in the book the movie's based on the character is biracial.

Well I guess they didn't feel like didn't putting their A-game in hair they wouldn't have to animate for very long what with them making her a fucking frog for the most of the movie.

No. Just because a black individual is light skinned does not mean that they are necessarily of mixed heritage. All it means is that they have light skin. Black as a race can cover a wide variety of skin tones, eye colors, hair types...IT DOES NOT MAKE SOMEONE ANY LESS BLACK.

We're going to have to launch a full scale investigation.

True, but light-skin, curly hair and green eyes? Nobody's denying that Black people come in all sorts of variety but lets not pretend that hollywood almost always highlights the ones with eurocentric features.

It's great that we're finally getting a major 3d animated film with a female character of color but design-wise this looks like business as usual.

This topic makes my head hurt.

Did they reveal that her parents were of different races? "not being black enough" would be insulting to me if I had parents who were of different races.

Stay on GAF a bit longer before making such statements.

How actually reading the thread? because no one thinks this character is "not being black enough"

The character have same skin color as Rihanna, we gonna arguing she's not black too?

I know she from sweden but shit..

Seriously, why do people's reading comprehension turn to shit when discussing race? Nobody said anything about her not being black enough.

Eh, I didn't really like the movie, but I know what you mean. I was mainly addressing how ridiculous Measley's points were.

Well.. She looks like she could pass as Rihanna's little sister so... Plus Measley is basically arguing we need more Lupita's than Rihanna's because Rihanna types aren't the real black. I'd say he's following and comprehending the thread just fine lol.
