It looks good, very pretty, but I dunno. The book gave the whole world a very different vibe for me than these images show. Just veyr.. brownish yellow, almost red due to all the heat and sand. This just looks grey and kinda cold.

Also, the book made it pretty clear (to me at least) that the Fremen were basically middle eastern people, but looks like the movie makers probably figured there were limits for how diverse they could be, so they went for some gender/race bending instead. Hollywood is weird.

The original idea was to do it like It. In two parts, filmed separately (not all at once like LOTR). Prior to COVID, the movie would've been released in theaters last October and then they would've immediately begun filming part 2 (the script for part 2 is already done).

But there's a natural break point that makes sense. Part 2 will begin two years later after the end of this one.

Oh good Lord. That’s not good. Dune is such a dense work that I don’t see it being much of a box office success, so getting part 2 greenlit won’t be easy.

I guess ending it with
Paul, and Jessica teaming up with the fremen and him getting the Muadib name
is a pretty good place to pause, but I really wish they’d filmed the whole thing…. 😳

No, I haven’t read Dune and don’t remember much about the David Lynch-directed 1984 bomb or the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel two-parter.

The title on the movie is "Dune Part One"

Opens with voice over from Chani about Dune (this is in the new trailer). Shows her and Fremen attacking a Harkkonnen harvester while she talks about them oppressing the Fremen only to be ordered to leave one day by the Emperor.

Then the title and Paul wakes up on Caladan. Lady Jessica tries to get him to use the Voice at the breakfast table to order her to give the water to him. Then Paul watches a hologram and reads a book about Dune and we get a little more exposition.

The Herald of the Emperor arrives with the mother and the Spacing Guild to order them to Dune. Duke signs the decree with his seal and the first 10 min ends.

The Spacing Guild looks awesome and the scale of the ships is AMAZING. This is Peter Jackson LOTR level reverence.

They also showed the entire spice harvester scene where Paul sees a worm for the first time.

I mean, they wage jihad on the universe, that kinda gives it away of what they are stylized as. I always thought it was a great portrayal much ahead of its time, same thing as (books spoilers all the way):
Jews surviving all the millennia as a united and diverse group

Actually did not realize this was only the first half of the book... hm. That's disappointing.

The footage was good though. It's a shame to open the movie with a glut of exposition... but I understand why it has to be done. LOTR did it much better.

The design of the world, unsurprisingly, looks incredible.

No bullshit detected.

I find it pretty hilarious how they hyped up the diverse casting in some interview, while completely ignoring this tiny little slightly important part of the book.
