AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch leaders on Wednesday condemned comments by a Muslim teacher who said he hoped for the death of a popular politician, further stoking religious tension prompted by the murder of a filmmaker critical of Islam.
Abdul-Jabbar van de Ven, a Dutch convert to Islam, told a Dutch television chat show on Tuesday he hoped anti-immigration populist Geert Wilders would soon die, although he did not want him to be killed by a Muslim.

Asked by presenter Andries Kneuvel if he wanted Wilders, who faces death threats for criticising Islam, to die within the next two years, Van de Ven said yes, preferrably due to illness.

But he said he hoped Wilders was not murdered by a Muslim and that murder in general was wrong.

He did admit however that he felt "some joy" on hearing of the murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh on 2 November. Van Gogh was apparently killed because he made a short film featuring semi-naked women talking about domestic violence in Islamic society.

Meanwhile, a debate raged about Muslim treatment of women after an imam refused to shake hands with Verdonk.

Imam Ahmad Salam told a news conference on Tuesday he was keen to talk to the minister about integration but said Islam prohibited contact with women outside the immediate family.

"It seems as if integration for Minister Verdonk is something that should lead to people outside of Islam saying how Muslims should practise Islam," he said.

There is NOTHING in the quran that says the bolded part, that is not only fucking stupid, its insulting, degrading and absolutely illogical. What the hell kind of Islam is being taught in Holland that this is not struck down.

I think Islamic extremism has become a serious problem in European countries that is widely overlooked. Most people don't realize that the influx of north African Arabs has drastically changed the demographics in major European cities.

I was watching the show last night and i really gasped when the guy said those things.
Man that is a true idiot, the bad news is we can't kick him out of our country cos the guy is dutch.
You really had to see him sitting there in his muslim outfit with long beard. What a psycho!
The host asked him if he was allowed to drink wine, the guy answered that if the host would drink wine he would leave the studio.

I'll try and find a screencap of this incident.

Oh, and the justice department already said that they can not arrest him because it is considered as freedom of speech.

The whole thing has been taken out of context a little.

The interviewer, Knevel, is known for approaching everything from a very christian perspective, so the way he asked the questions really put those words into the mouth of the guy. It went a little like this:

Knevel: So, would you like Wilders to die then?
Muslim Teacher: well...yes, but I wouldn't want a muslim to do it.
Knevel: so, you'd rather see him die of something like cancer?
Mulim: ...yes...that would be better.

Still I think fundamentalism can be a very dangerous thing and we really have to take some drastic measures to prevent the situation from getting out of hand.

There's a big difference to saying something and agreeing with something, especially in an interview where the interviewer fires questions at you and you have to answer quickly.

I've heard quotes here such as "dragged out into the street and shot" or maybe a bit tamer removed from the country entirely. I don't know why people are using terms such as "extremists" and "fundamentalists" when Ripclawe pointed out that these ideas have little to do with religion. The best term is "radicals".
