There are a ridiculous amount of notable releases this week, so this'll be multiple posts (I can't fit all the boxart images in a single post).

America's love affair with poker continues:
B0009WPLV2.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

No boxart for the five-disc Jackie Chan box (but it's produced by Madacy Entertainment--beware).

No boxart for the 1925 silent version of the Wizard of Oz, with Oliver Hardy as the Tin Man.

There are roughly three jillion TV box sets out this week, including Six Feet Under S4, The OC S2, Kung Fu S3, and this lovely box:

Is that really Kurosawa's Samurai 7 or some shitty anime remake?

It's futuristic anime remake of Seven Samurai. It's actually quite faithful to the film, but throw in a lot of mecha and warships. Mifune's character is also a robot.

Here is a link to a trailer if you're curious as to how they ruined it for you
http://www.samurai7.tv/

If you hate anime, you probably won't enjoy it. It's nowhere near as good as the film, but being a huge Kurosawa and anime fan I was able to appreciate it. And I typically hate samurai anime with a passion.

I'm sure Kurosawa was like, "What this film is REALLY missing is a bunch of giant mechs... I'll add it in the director's cut". Whoever made the anime sure had balls.

Much like that Seven Samurai 20XX game, they had the permission of the Kurosawa family to do it, along with some assistance from his son. Not that it prevents him from rolling in his grave, but still...

Layer Cake
Oldboy
Gladiator (They added back in 16 minutes of footage that was taken out after the AiCN screening)
Howling Special Edition

I love Gladiator, but screw that.

Wait, The Truman Show wasn't on DVD already? Awesome, I'm buying it.

Truman show is already out on dvd,but its barebones.

Slight word of caution, though if you don't already own Gladiator you probably don't really care, but this new version of Gladiator doesn't have the DTS soundtrack like the original 2 disc special edition did.
I'm not giving up my DTS for some deleted scenes. :D

Oooh, new Gladiator DVD? Details?

Amazon.com said:

It looks like the two-disc edition of Gladiator (with the aforementioned DTS track) is now out of print.

I dunno--that's one of my favorite Ridley Scott movies. But at $27.99 at Amazon the price is pretty steep if you already have the movie.

I never did get the barebones, so I'll probably pick this one up if it's cheap. Same with Happy Gilmore... I wanted to get it before but it was only packaged with Billy Madison and they were both Full Screen.

I already own Gladiator, but since it is one of my favourite movies, I'll rent the new DVD just to check out the extended version.

Thanks.

I have the original release, but will probably pick this one up as well... Along with that new Studio Ghibli flick that came out last week, I think.

There were two Studio Ghibli films that came out last week: Pom Poko and My Neighbor The Yamadas. Pom Poko is great, but I don't care for Yamadas.

Oh, hello. Added that one to my cart too. Thank you much. :)

Wow, a lot of shitty "Special Editions" this week. Gladiator is the only one deserving of the treatment.

Howling 2?! ZOMGWTF! I've been waiting on that for ages. I want the Sybil Danning leather bustier bursting Werewolf secks goodness. I'll just set an A-B point on my DVD player for the part where she tears that bitch off - in fact, that sounds like a great new avatar. :P

Definitely doing the double-dip on The Truman Show. I think the new transfer is at 1.85:1 instead of 1.66:1 like the original, non-anamorphic release. Besides that, I might pick up Layer Cake if I can find it. Never seen it, but I adored Lock, Stock... and Snatch, so it's probably a sure thing. On a related note, I wish Guy Ritchie would do another crime/comedy. Revolver seems to be a straight drama piece, so that's a little disappointing.

Uh oh, is this new release of Meaning of Life the watered down 1 disc set? Aren't they doing the same thing with ET? Downgrading from two discs to one?

*gulp*

Want more info on the new Transporter DVD! Cover looks dumb, but I'd still like to know what's on the insiiiiiiiiiiiide.

It looks sort of off, but that Transporter cover is really nice. The best aside from the Criterion boxes, as usual.

I grabbed Planetes today. Anyone else have a problem with the first disc always becoming dislodged before opening it? It's happened to me 3 times already.... :/

I'll get the Flaming Lips and Happy Gilmore on tuesday.

I had that problem with volume one, but the disc played just fine in my player. I ordered volume two from The Right Stuf, and they sent back their entire inventory to Bandai because they received a ton of floater discs, demanding something in better condition. Bandai picked terrible cases for this set.

When I got volume 1 AND 2 of Planetes, the first disc was loose in the case as well. Every copy the store had was like that :/

It's because Bandai used shoddy disc holders, and they don't appear to be listening to the rabid fanboy complaints over at AnimeOnDVD.
