DW5s Story Mode is magnificent!

HAHAH TAKE THIS OFF TOPIC!

Musou Mode just flows so nice now. its like they tweaked the events to make them obvious enough to the player, and present some real tension.

Last battle for Xing Cai was awesome.

Peasants fight for the Shu, awesome. Love the help. The stupid Honor Justice loving guy goes running out to help, but I run to save them all. They all cheer for me, then thank me by getting their worthless asses out of the fight and protecting Lui at the castle.

Stupid Lui Bei's son has some crush right, so I get my ass kicked, he comes rushing to help, then Xing is like Get the fuck outta here! And he's like youre right.

So right as that part ends Zou comes at us with his fucking katana on horseback so I have to fend him off while Lui runs off to the castle again. I manage to fend off the pirate when one of our generals up north is dying since stupid Wei strategist defeated the stone maze thing WHICH NEVER WORKS ANYWAY. But OH NO! Lui is under MAJOR seige at the castle. I knock a lower ranking general out of his stupid horse and charge for the castle, helping out in skirmishes along the way.

Fuck here comes 3 generals all for Lui then I come crashing into their troops and start laying ASS WHOOPIN EXTREME, then my body guard and I do a dual musou and TEAR them up. All looks good when Gan Ning or whatever shows up and starts ripping into me. Things look bleak at the castle when HURRAH! Reinforcements come in at the last minute and we destroy Ga and his dumb army.

Finally we charge the final general, but it was a trick! He's to the south! Chaaaarge! I won, cause im awesome.

That was in normal mode, and it was fuckin hard I thought. Jesus. Barely made it through that one.

The ending movies are awesome and in general all the cinematics, in game script n stuff is VERY well played out in this installment leading for a very scripted feel even tho the player has control of the outcome.

Awesome Koei, you ROX MY SOX.

Poor kids have to suffer Zhuge Liang to get hold of Yue Ying.

Play Samurai Warriors XL!

Zhuge rox, cept for his somewhat homosexual conversations with his successor. Using him is like using the death star. It rocks. Generals fear his musou!

His giant laser is kinda neat, and he is married to the lady of death.

One thing I noticed about this game is that you can earn 4th weapons on the first playthrough. I mean once you get a decent set of items to equip in the tweens range, there is no reason to NOT play on Hard anyway, even with new characters. I actually got Zhuge's peacock feather without even realizing the requirements surprisingly enough(his is easy, just follow the instructions of the screaming heads on his 3rd stage I think...one where you conquer 3 castles to win)

The Nanman campaign stage was kinda kewl in this game too from what I remember. Similar to DW4, but more colorful with some new traps and tigers. And no Meng Huo duels.

It does lack the sheer glut of mohicans in DW4 though, THAT was freaking awesome just looking at the sea of red filling that map. It just kept throwing them your way.

Damn, am I gonna have to rebuy DW5?

DW5 has even more troops on the screen at once, I was mentioning that to drinky crow. Its pretty fucking nuts what they throw at you, and they're more than capable.

just beat the game with one of the "other" generals to get that

characters on their first play through is hard to play.. even on normal.
it's easier to train them when you get them their 4th weapon first... max your stats on like easy to train characters like ma chao, ling tong, lubu, wei yan.. etc. and play as 2nd player to help them unlock~~ most missions require P1 to kill the generals themselves so it's better to have a friend over to help~

wei yan rocks on ground, ma chao rocks on horse~~
equip wei yan with the item that increases your attack radius and he's crazy~~

yeah id do the easy route, but the battles on normal without doing that are SO much more fun when you dont cheese the system. Its freaking down the wire.

You guys think so? With a 12-ish attack+defense item on and the ice orb, I kept the game fixed on Hard permanantly even with new blood. The first couple maps are generally stupidly easy(outside the rare general with the fuzzy aura...use Musou coin on them); it's not until the 4th or 5th map that you really get the feeling of ownage, but by then you've raised several levels anyway and can likely equip an extra accessory or two.

Zhuge Liang was no problem from scratch for me via Hard. Just sayin, cause on normal difficulty with those accessories, unstoppable.

depends on which character you use

with characters that i haven't trained at all before, in hard mode when you get to the 5-star stages even killing normal soldiers take like, 10-15 hits... that's a little bit of a problem

of course, with characters like ma chao, even on the first play through, killing the soldiers/generals is like cutting grass

i had a lot of fun on cao ren's last stage on hard on my first play through.. I didn't know i was supposed to cut off yue ying's supply route, which made the morale drop super low... even my generals were getting owned by normal soldiers. me and my bro were literally planning strategies and routes on how to take on the enemy because basically we had to attack and defend everything with our 2 generals and our body guard~

They need to make a yue ying spinoff game or something. One of the best characters in a videogame ever.

I EARNED the game complete with Xiang, she's a horrible character to be totally honest, but her story is probably one of the best in the game, as it is told. Her moves just leave soooo many fucking openings.

Yea, Xing sucks. She was the first character I used, and what a world of difference it was to jump into Xiayou Dun right after.

xing is ok i guess

zhen ji is a character that i really have no idea how to use aside from a pretty useful musou
or maybe i should've leveled her up a bit before trying to get her lv.4 weapon on hard 5-star stage where just killing 300 people is a pain in the ass

cao ren's square square triangle triangle triangle triangle triangle triangle triangle triangle is really nice, haha. i didn't realize you could keep on pressing triangle for a lot of character's moves (usually the sq. sq. tri moves) to increase the combo.

Someday in the future when you tire of this game, seriously give SWXL a look. I think you would really dig the branching plotlines and "missions within missions" approach. Lots of focus on rivalries and interactions among the characters, plus the development system is pretty expansive. Only 20 characters, but so much more involving than the micro-stories for the 50+ cast here.

Just keep it in mind is all, and I'll shutup about it.

Zhen Ji was always kind of a icky character except for her musou which was insanely powerful given a long enough bar.

Xiahou Dun will always be the first character I choose, cause he is so bad ass. Took me a while to get used to some his new moves, but man, just far too awesome. I've only cleared it with Xiahou Dun and Ling Tong, but I've yet to grab the orbs... Figuring out the 4th weapons do seem to be easier, but there is a lot of special/rare items out there for me to find.

Know what also has a similar story mode you should check out?

...yes, while I'm being a smart ass, I actually do recommend you try reading it. Especially with your interest in the DW story mode. Also check out the ROTK series for probabaly one of the most addictive strategy games ever in my opinion.

Xiahou Dun is THE MAN. His lack of eyelash maintenance, mascara, and rouge set him a cut above the rest of the cast in the testosterone department. Plus he hates Guan Yu and Shu for being a bunch of whiny wusses. He's a man with a job, and that's to pave Central China with corpses. Plus, his moves just FEEL hard -- each lop of that massive scimitar is just brutal. He put that sniveling "hero" Guan Yu in his place -- well, at least he does in his Musou plot.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Ma Chao just 'cuz his name sounds like "MACHO" and because he's just fuckin' pissed at the world. Kicked out of his homeland by Cao Cao, betrayed by his countrymen, and pretty much made to work for that pussy Liu Bei (and his fop of a son, Liu Chan) while in exile SHOULD make a man bitter, but he always finds the time to scream about JUSTICE in a world that has none. His ending is just him charging the armies of Cao Cao and Xiahou Dun, ready to GO DOWN FIGHTING. He may be Yue Ying Lite on the battlefield, but he's still strong in the crowd control biz, and he puts the punks down with style.

As for the chicks, I side with MAF: Yue Ying's a freakin' beast. She's unstoppable. All her Charge moves are awesome, and her spinning Musou is only trumped by the Death Star antics of her husband. Plus in her missions, SHE'S the one who commands the Juggernauts, instead of the one getting torched by 'em. (Sucks to play the Nanman side in the jungle campaigns thanks to her.)

What bodyguards do you folks prefer? I have a Brilliant/S ice sorceror who saves my ass in Normal/Hard missions, and I haven't used anyone else. The archer chicks have great Musou strikes, but the sorcerors seem to know how to stay out of melee clumps and target generals with their freeze spells. Once a general gets all frosty, he's guaranteed at LEAST a half a bar of pain, seeing as the freeze lasts a good 5-10 seconds sometimes -- more'n enough charge a Musou twice over.

I haven't unlocked much, so I haven't seen an S rank bodyguard yet. I'm content with the spear wielding bodyguard cause he's helped me clean house. All I keep yelling is "HOLY SHIT!" when the guy kills like 5 guys at once with his mighty musou.

I've only played with SSX (the girl, not the poster) since DW3 and I haven't changed since... I like her moves, but man, she has been totally nerfed since DW3. I used to be able to get 1000 kills easy with her...

Xiahou Dun is a savage. The guy ate his own eye! How hardcore is that! I also like his six-hitter, which is really a 7, cause that double cut at the end really looks like it hurts...

As for storyline, it's changed so much from the original story. In DW3, Xiahou Dun respected Guan Yu. In Dw5, he hates his guts and beard. So reading the stories won't matter much, maybe will give you some insight in finding weapons...

EDIT - next gen DW (PS3 launch?) better make sure you can do some of the cool stuff Zhou Yun did in the intro. :D

Unreal Championship 2 was sold out today, so I ended up snagging this again.

Lucked out too as I resumed Yue Ying's 4th map(Hard mode) where I last left off and finishing it netted me a lv. 20 Defense item!

Her 5th map is very difficult since I haven't trained her and she is only rank 8. I found a really snappy way to level is to abuse 'Guan Yu's escape' map. The whole thing lasts all of 5 minutes and is a very linear gauntlet with about five generals to route. Playing on Hard nets around 4500 points, easilly enough to rank-up each visit. Plus there are a few obvious item stashes on the way, but because it's only a level 3 map, don't expect the juicy stuff to show. I have lucked out with a pretty solid 3rd weapon for her on it though.

Haven't read this before... but I did read the chinese ver ;)

Since I'm playing the japanese version, I dunno what my bodyguard ranking translates to... but mine is a sword guy with all 4 bars full and 4 skill... (shin-musou)~~
kicks ass

How dare you wankers pretend to go on at length about pure badass in a bite-sized Chinaman and not fucking mention Dian Wei! >:|

I don't like how dian wei uses a freakin axe in the game >:|

<-- dian wei~~

I don't like how dian wei uses a freakin axe in the game >:|

That is because he is so fucking metal!!!!! :lol

I wouldn't mind a more accurate version of Dian Wei, particularly using the dead bodies of other Chinamen as melee weapons as in the story; but a big, bald, bad motherfucker will have to suffice.

And some spill over from the SW love-in since I don't have regular net access. . .

Kenshin Uesugi was pretty bad ass.

Just because religious zealots rock for no other reason than they're willing to cut down hordes of enemies in the name of their cause. +1 Kenshin Uesugi, - ONE BILLION for Samurai Warriors being all assorted flavors of ass.

In the meantime I'm waiting on DW5XL. Screw Koei and their shenanigans. >:|

Just wanted to say that my brother and I already beat 6 characters' stories, which is pretty much more than what we did with DW4, DW4 XL, DW4 Empires, SW, and SW XL put together.

Or close enough to it.

Koei certainly did a much better job this time around.

I do miss the fun endings they had for each kingdom in DW3 and DW4. Nothing made me laugh more than the DW4 Wei ending when they were hunting animals... But thankfully I don't have to go all through that crap for DW5, I believe it's just one ending, correct?

I'm not falling for this thread this year. I swear to god that I sometimes think that GAF is just some secret cult viral marketing organization for Koei USA. Well, I'm not buying this likely delightfully fun game, and having a great time in co-op! As you can see, I'm solid as a rock, no caving this time, no sir!

DW5 owns all!

Indeed. This game is rocking me more than I ever thought it would. What a fantastic way to end this series on PS2. But I want an empires expansion! :D

Since I'm having the JP version, I'm getting my ass kicked with Xing Cai (but what a lovely ass to be kicked). First, I don't feel like checking which kanji stands for "hard", so could anyone with a US version tell me what the difficulty settings are when you start Musou Mode, left to right? I played with Guan Yu on the left-most setting and it was hard. I played with Xing on the right-most setting and it was hard.
Second, I'm afraid that I'll blunder about with the bodyguard settings. A fan user is good, right? Other than that, what should I look for?

Or maybe I'll just pack my Limited Edition back up, bite the bullet and get the US version (with dubs).

Easy/Normal/Hard in US version.

I used a sword bodyguard with Xing, that was fun, she's all fucking uber powered now, I use her all the time. People say ice sorc guys rock too but sword lady has yet to do me wrong.

Xing is an awesome experience because the missions are SO FUCKING hard with her, and for some reason, flow better for that reason. Her story mode and the missions involved were the most memorable ive ever had in the DW games.

The challenge was there, the story was good, it was just awesome.

Of course I was just playing Shu to unlock YUE YING ULTIMATE FIGHTER! ROX!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dumped 7 hours into the game on monday, so sad hahaha.

*fires up DW5*

A comment and a question:

Wow, switching from light to heavy weapons is dramatic, and not something i've noticed until now... Zhou Tai's attacks went from super slow to super fast.

Anyways, how do I unlock Guan Ping? Just complete Guan Yu's story?

GameFAQs is your friend...

Seriously kids, buy this game. At least rent it, save yourself the money in case you get snakebit, but then buy the game. GAFazon's got it. :D
