Dying Light IOTI A dead island on the mirror's edge.

I still have to do this part, but a quick question, can I use a burning throwing star or does that mess up the sample? Just trying to figure out how I kill it without it taking off.

I am talking about killing the bolter at night by the way, realized it was not clear.

I just snuck right up behind it and snapped it's neck without ever needed to distract any volatiles or anything.

Speaking of night, whats the advice regarding your normal flashlight? I feel like I have to use it because the city is so damn dark, but does that draw infected or virals?

Should we run with flashlights shining? Try to hold still somewhere and creep in the dark?

And I've only used survival sense rarely and only in the early going to see what I could interact with - what use is it when dealing with night time in particular?

BTW - dipped my foot into some co-op last night and had a blast. Very smooth to pop in and out. My only gripe - and a minor one at that - is that all players need to huddle up very close together whenever there is an objective that starts a cut-scene. Its a minor annoyance but can still be picky and touchy and happen too often as you can never really tell which minor actions might spawn a cut-scene. Besides that though, combat, looting, exploring and tackling quests has been great. The horror aspect of the game is diluted as you add players but thats not really a problem as the game straddles both its serious tone and its playground of zombie mayhem tone without issues.

Curious about this too. Is there even a benefit for leaving the flashlight off or do zombies and the volatile spot you just as easily?

Can't wait to unlock that stealth takedown and lurk in the shadows.

I don't bother turning it off. Volatiles don't seem to react to it in general. I also don't really bother being sneaky since you can sprint directly behind a volatile and it won't hear you. All you have to do is stay out of their small vision cones.

I don't think the baddies can see your normal flashlight in the dark... at least that's how it appears to me.

Co-op is very cool. Yes, you all need to huddle up but you can do that quickly by hitting the fast travel button (hold down touch pad on PS4). If you are not in the right spot or your co-op buddy has traveled ahead and is waiting for you, you can hold down that button and you'll immediately be dropped where you need to be.

Just keep en eye out for volatile cones on your map. Turn it off when they're getting close to being in your path. They are pretty blind outside of their cone. Even if your flashlight tips one off (which you can tell by the noise it makes) if you're out of their cone they will lose sight and you should have time to get safe.

I think the first night probably screwed with some expectations, as it seems to have artificial amount of enemies to deal with and wants you to bolt home. Nights after that are not as hard.

Can still screw yourself up sometimes though, so don't get too reckless.

You can always craft the night vision potion early on in the survival tree if you want too.

and finished at 32 hours. All sidequests done (I actually did the 3 fetch quests for coffee, lighter fuel and medicine supplies when I went back to the slums, because why not), but I didnt delve into the challenges or the escort acitivities things (I did one of those and the reward was so bad I didnt bother with the rest).

I totally feel like I got my moneys worth anyway, and I loved the game. Good start to 2015

If its an immediate *bamf* to your co-op buddy that'd definitely work. If there's a load screen or load times, it'll still be kindof annoying. Will use, thanks.

Only problem is that when I turn the flashlight off I'm completely blind. Can't see shit cap'n!

Sounds like good advice here - haven't gotten that recipe yet tho.

You can walk right up behind one at night. They don't move around so as long as you stay out of the cone of vision they won't take off.

Ha, when I read "bamf," I think "bad ass mother fucker."

Anyway, yeah, it's instant. No load screens or anything. You just zip right to them and the cutscene starts.

Just look for the prompt in the top left of the screen.

I think one of my favorite things in this game was I came across 3 of rais's men with melee weapons. I decapitated one and switched to a police rifle and aimed at the other two, and they immediately put their hands up and backed up a little. After about ten seconds I hadn't fired, so one of them ran at me with his wrench and got shot in the face, and the third guy ran away after the gun shot.

Argh, 43/44 of the side quests, no achievement and no idea what's missing. Looking at the Steam stats (0.1%) it could very well be bugged.

I dint get a achievement either. I didn't count them but I did all of rhem and there were no.more on the maps (unless the challenges and protections count)

There are a few achievements that aren't popping correctly for some people. Side quests, safe houses, quarantine zones, and note collecting related achievements have all been reported as broken. Pretty frustrating that they are all of the "start a new game" variety if they don't work properly the first time.

So I'm reading through this thread as much as I can but...Is the general consensus that this is a good game? Thinking about picking it up tomorrow now that I'm done with FarCry 4 and REmake.

Hmm, so apparently this is available at Power Level 13. I am currently at Level 7. :( Think I have a bunch of side quests to do perhaps.

I just snuck right up behind it and snapped it's neck without ever needed to distract any volatiles or anything.
So see above, if I do not have neck snapping and just attack it with a melee weapon, will it not take off, or is the point attack them and have them fall to the ground, at which point I am afraid the volatiles will just take my ass out.

I just feel like I am at this point in the game but nowhere near powerful enough on any of the my skills or weapons. All my weapons are still under 100 Damage except for the larger ones like the Rebar, etc.

So do I need to do what i said and focus on the side level quests?

TIA to anyone that can offer suggestions, assistance, etc. Feel as if I have hit a bit of a brick wall. I actually just fired the game up, so about to play and see if I can get the one gun. I also do not have any guns right now.

I primarily played the game with zero walkthroughs or videos, which is what I always do, but am starting to think perhaps that was not wise with this game.

To top it off my time to play games is extremely limited, so I only get an hour or two (tops) here and there, so it is hard to get in a groove.

The code has been dug into. A quest was removed from the game but not tracker. That achievement/trophy is impossible to get as of right now.

So waiting for a patch it is.

They die very quickly, just hit it with your best weapon, one swing should be enough. Then loot and run away, doesn't matter if you die.

I had some good times doing coop today. It was 4 of us at night in front Rai's base. We spent the whole night beating zombies to death throwing flares everywhere. By day break there were so many bags on the ground they started stacking themselves 5 high!!

I didn't have that ability yet. I just walked up behind one and bashed its stupid zombie head in with my melee weapon.

Awesome thanks. Waiting for night right now, looking for crayons in the meantime.
Also once I realized I actually had the grappling hook just for the challenge, did that too.
Progressing slowly but surely.

My supplies from the awful companion app even showed up!

Thanks again. Feel much better about taking this mission on now.

ARGHHHH they patch the dupe weapon glitch, have to uninstall and reinstall game and hope it doesnt auto patch, I need to make a few more of my supah antique pick axe

Hawkian

The Cryptarch's Bane
ah, a patch!

to each his own, I cannot imagine wanting to break the difficulty curve on this game, I'm already getting pretty confident

Finished up all the Side Quests and the final Story mission. 40 hours total, 74% Trophy completion.

The final mission is actually damn good. Video game finales are so typically anticlimactic, that this one was surprisingly satisfying. In the end, Crane does turn out to be a pretty likeable video game protagonist. He's got a lot of personality, some of his lines at the end are gold.

So I'm reading through this thread as much as I can but...Is the general consensus that this is a good game? Thinking about picking it up tomorrow now that I'm done with FarCry 4 and REmake.

I just finished Far Cry 4 a few weeks before this, and even though the two games are very similar, I still found Dying Light compelling enough to 100%.

Crane is awesome.
I really like his back and forth with Rais when you first are out doing stuff for him trying to get Antizin plus all his own dialog with himself and his GRE contact over the whole issue.
I thought it was really well written.

Yeah, my opinion of the writing, overall, improved steadily as I played through the game. I still feel like the NPCs talk waaaaayyy too much without anything really meaningful or interesting to say, but there are definitely some memorable moments and memorable lines of dialogue exchanged throughout the game. There were a few funny, memorable NPCs throughout (
Gas Mask Man, Captain Jeff and his Apocalypse Wall, Gazi and his mother
), but the vast majority of them are lame and drone on forever about nothing.

I think the second half of the story is better than the first. I think the story is kind of clumsy getting off the ground, but it actually kinda comes together in meaningful ways as it goes on.

I was listening to Rebel FM and Arthur described the story in this game as 'atrocious'.

I haven't nearly finished the story yet, but 'atrocious'? I realize opinions are all subjective, but how does this story qualify as 'atrocious', especially when compared to other video game stories? So far it has a few semi-interesting characters, some tropes, some surprises and the voice acting is pretty convincing.

Does the story go to shit at some point, or does Gies just have a different definition of what 'atrocious' means?

The story is absolutely not atrocious. Actually above average, as far as video games go, I would say. Definitely better than Far Cry 4's, or Dead Island, or any of the Dead Risings... or Resident Evil 5 or 6... or Mirror's Edge...

There aren't a lot of games out there that you can directly compare to Dying Light that have it coming out looking markedly worse in storytelling. I would say it's actually a little bit better than it even needed to be, for a somewhat co-op multiplayer focused game.

Yeah, the side quests REALLY shine with dialogue/small story. It really fleshes out the world, you have different people reacting to things differently and just trying to live their own way.

That's Arthur. He seems to judge first and then come up with his opinion to fit his judgement after that.

I think it is well written and takes extra strides to make it seem realistic and not overly scripted (some people contact you with updates while you are out and about or approaching destinations rather than just doing it all face to face).

I also think that the premise of the story is okay, it is a zombie apocalypse game after all. I like the effort that they put into matching up the characters (parkour instructor) with the gameplay (better off using elevation and evading much of the time) and the environment (lots of connected roofs to jump on) as well.

I agree it is a bit talky but considerably better written than Dead Island and I much prefer its understated style (Crane's sarcasm and slightly snarky humor) over something hammy and big budget action flickesque like a Call of Duty.

I'm still in the first area though so it could go downhill in terms of the overarching plot, of course. I don't see the minute to minute dialog taking a dive, though.

I'm not sure how I feel about the whole plant thing, though. Seems really silly to send someone in and have them do downright evil shit just for a file (why would anyone who saw it be able to do anything with it anyway? Aren't they all trapped in the city just trying to live as long as they can?) And I'm not sure why Crane goes along with his handler after the early Rais stuff.

I really appreciate the detail that has gone into all the broken down cars in this game. You don't usually see that in game that doesn't allow you to drive them.

The game ties all of that up in pretty convincing ways, I thought. Like I said, it just takes a while.

I bet Arthur hasn't played very much of it, because also like I said, the beginning is sorta rocky and really leads on like it isn't going anywhere.
