ran away like a peon. it worked though.

so is there a mode i can grind in and come back to the current campaign with upgrades? Free Mode? Or just replay stages? Not sure how to unlock branching paths even though it explains the conditions.

Free Mode, Ambition Mode, hell you could choose stages from the Story Mode after you complete it.

To unlock the paths, you'll have to play the stage in story mode. It'll unlock the branching path if you clear them and you will unlock the Hypothetical mode once you clear all of them up to the branching point.

Dumb beginner question but here we go. I'm doing Ambition Mode and am using Xingcai. What got me through a lot of fights, is her Square, square, triangle, triangle, triangle combo where she always went batshit and slashed at the air like crazy doing great damage.

Then she just...stopped. Now when I do the same exact combo she just...doesn't do the crazy slashes anymore. What triggers that?

Edit. Nevermind, it's the Storm Rush thing mentioned in the OP. I thought it was a combo this whole time hahaha. Can AI people switch their weapons to take that advantage away if they can? I've definitely seen baddies with blue signs over their heads, suddently turning Red while I'm still holding the same weapon.

Do you have a lot of Velocity on her weapon? Sometimes in Musou games you can speed up the characters' attacks so much that it gets to a point where it's hard to properly control their attacks.

Edit: As per your edit, yes enemy officers do indeed switch their weapons in order to not be at a disadvantage against your's.

I'm going to pick this up for PS4 in a little bit! I never played much of vanilla 8 so I'm looking forward to this.

That comparison video Koei released reminded me of the last generational transition in the best and most hilarious way. Bump mapping and processing effects everywhere! I actually really like the way it looks.

Yep, they can switch weapons just like you can. Definitely makes officer fights more interesting. Do you fight a weapon you're weak against to charge your Rage meter, or wail on them with a type advantage for quick dispatch? Up to you! Of course if your other weapons have equal typing the decision is made for you.

My observations so far. I just played a mission as Cao Cao where you....god, I can't remember anyone's name. Anyway some guy invites you to his
palace so he can betray you with the evil Strategist and your big fat right hand man dies.

  • The plot isn't super hard to follow, though it does jump around considerably and there are probably too many characters to make anything anyone says or does meaningful to me. A lot of people talking about their ambition, blah blah.
  • There's a surprising amount of variety for a game where you'd imagine the primary mechanic is hitting square. Lots of different mission encounter types, bosses with different weapons, different level layouts, etc.
  • I am totally confused by the weapon selection interface. I never know if a certain character should use a certain weapon or if I'm out to swap them around. Then when I do swap them around, the game just has "compatibility" and no easy-to-see measure of strength from what I can tell.
  • Wouldn't this game benefit from having some type of strategy overlay grafted onto it? I'm thinking of something like Kessen. You would have these skirmishes for individual battles, but it would be interesting to direct the armies/groups of armies on some big giant map for a massive battle.
  • The voice acting is so bad that I like it.
  • The basic combat loops are satisfying. The weapons feel unique and distinct. Can't help but wonder if they could improve things by making the AI more aggressive and giving the player more dodge/parry options
  • Even with the variety and the loop being satisfied, I don't know that I could play a 20-30 hr game of this. It's not that I don't like it or don't enjoy it, but at least so far it seems a bit...I don't know, brainless? What am I missing there?
  • There was one mission when I was escorting the Emperor in a carriage when Lu Bu showed up and I actually DID beat him. I guess that doesn't count as pursuing him!

8's story is weaker than 7's and feels like it's trying to cover different content, which means it jumps around a lot and hurts the flow of the story. Even aside from that, 7 had a lot more cutscenes and more linear objectives to help keep the story consistent. I've definitely come to appreciate the amount of side content in 8 after playing 7, though; I didn't really do much after beating all four stories in it.

Nah, weapon selection is all preference. For example, people like me prefer to use only a character's EX-enabled weapon. Just remember to keep two different weapon types equipped (heaven/earth, earth/man, man/heaven).

For strategy added, please see the Empires subtitled games.

Enemies on higher difficulties DO pose more of a threat because they can actually kill you if you're not careful. DW4 had a parry, but in practice, it was pretty limited when fighting groups (stupidly-good when fighting the duels, though).

Call me cheesy, but it may be, uh, the love. I've been playing Dynasty Warriors since I was 12 or 13 (on a friend's PS2, co-op with that friend). Dynasty Warriors is one of the few constants in gaming, and seeing the iterative changes with every entry is like seeing an old friend and catching up with them, shooting the shit, committing genocide.

The story is also quite compelling. Once you are familiar with the kingdoms and the major characters, you start to have much more fun playing them. For a quick-and-dirty primer, I suggest watching the John Woo films Red Cliff parts 1 and 2 (not the single-movie Western release).

Finding one or two or a handful of characters that you really like will drive you to max them out.

And IIRC it was
Dian Wei
who died.

When you're selecting what weapon type you want, the little picture of the weapon will have an EX next to it.

Also, each weapon does have a damage rating. It sounded like you didn't notice it from your other post.

How do you tell which weapon is ex enabled again?

It'll be the one with the small "EX" in the corner of the icon of the weapon next to the name. Otherwise, it'll typically be the weapon equipped to slot 1 of a character you've never touched before (unless you sold their weapon).

For me, this is what I look forward to when picking up a new DW title. Koei's made each character have a distinct personality loosely based, or even completely separate, of their historical figure. It's nice to see each title evolve them a bit further (DW7 Cao Cao was a really nice treat if you were used to DW3-5 Cao Cao) or have them do things when they aren't constrained to the "script" (Warriors Orochi games are great for this).

The game yeah while it is mindless it is quite amusing in bursts and can lose hours just powering up a favorite character and collecting weapons for their skills and such. Other folks play it for the characters and story. I already put in about 40+ hours into the game I think lol

The more "strategy" related stuff is the Empires series. While the fights and such are the same general thing as the standard DW game there are strategy elements included. Its a pretty good series. I think in the US the last one made was Dynasty Warriors Empires 7. I wonder if they will make one with 8

And for someone like me with no home systems apart from PC, Wii, and Wii U, getting a content-perfect numbered Dynasty Warriors game is a special treat. The last Warriors game I played was Next, which, while pretty good, was bogged down by Vita garbage. Prior to that, Samurai Warriors Chronicles, a very good game in itself. I also played pretty much every localized Samurai/Dynasty/Orochi/Strikeforce game on the PSP. I haven't played a numbered entry since... DW4? DW5? So this is a momentous occasion. Hope Vita gets that framerate patch soon, though.

I really want to play with my friend who has a PS3, though. Can he just buy vanilla DW8, generate a save file, then sell off vanilla DW8? He's not looking forward to buying both vanilla and XL when the costs are still prohibitive over here. The chart in the OP seems to support this:
BjF2bTqCcAA5OCV.jpg:large

Also, I am nearing the weapon limit. Which weapons are safe to sell off? Are first weapons with no abilities okay to sell? I only have Reforge, and very few weapon materials.

Sell all the crap with no abilities just as long as its not something with high damage stats which you would want to transfer skills over to later.

Pretty much just sell anything that is low damage + no stats / wont use.

Also, I am nearing the weapon limit. Which weapons are safe to sell off? Are first weapons with no abilities okay to sell? I only have Reforge, and very few weapon materials.

you can safely sell lv 1 and lv 2 weapons if they have crappy/no skills. you should save them though if they have skills you want to add onto lv 3/lv 4 weapons since remember, the attributes are cumulative (lv3 weapon with flash 5 combined with lv 1 weapon with flash 1, will give you a lv 3 with flash 6).

always look up the description of the skills, because there's 2 weapon attritubes with the SAME NAME but different bonuses. which is hella weird and a screwup imo.

do not sell lv 3/4 weapons with no skills though, because those serve as the best weapons to add attributes you want to. empty or 1-2 skill lv 3/4 weapons are the most sought after and hardest to find.

you can also reforge 3 crappy weapons into 2 random ones, if you max out your wallet.

So got the Vita version of Complete and started fresh (I've played a reasonable amount of 8 non-XL before but using a Friends copy) and I decided to do Lu Bu's story first. Was playing on Normal without to many problems but then I hit (Stage 4)
"Capture of Puyang"
. I cannot complete this stage properly even on Beginner (
On Normal there's not enough time to do the recruit warlord's escort, on Beginner I can do that, but I can't defend the Engineers because Chen Gong decides to suicide rush a castle on the opposite of the map , by himself, just before they spawn and by the time I get back to the engineer point they're all dead.
I ended up brute forcing my way through by clearing
the castle Chen Gong tries to suicide in
and then clearing the other and then riding across the map and killing
Cao Cao
before he can finish of the strategist.

Is this normal or am I doing something incredibly wrong ?

Asides from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the Nobunagas Ambition series Koei for the most part has kinda abandoned the more experimental strategy titles.

They have not even made another Kessen in like forever. Kessen III was fantastic. Really wished that they would release that and the others on PSN...

They released it on US and apparently as Shogun Darius said.
My Kessen III purchase many months back truly bring tear of joys to my eyes.

Now, what I need it just PS2 Classics of RotK X and my life will be complete.

Same here. I wish I had the option for Japanese voices but I love how over the top and generic these guys are with expressions.

"Is there any foe worthy of my power?!?!" - English Lu Bu

I'm holding my purchase until they release the patch to turn off the deep of field effect, when can we expect the patch?, 1 or 2 more months?.

I've always found fighting Lu Bu on Wei's storyline easy, it's only on Shu that I've had a problem.

Well, I finally fought Lu Bu in the Shu campaign (Hulao Gate). That was fairly challenging. Zhao Yun was incredibly low-level and it took quite a long time to take Lu Bu down. And that was with all the Coalition officers helping, too.

I'm a bit later on in Shu's story now, and man, Xu Shu is amazing. Loving his Altair design, too. Zhuge Liang is still as good as ever. Assigned the wingblades to be his subweapon because, um, Sleeping Dragon?

Pretty much just sell anything that is low damage + no stats / wont use.

always look up the description of the skills, because there's 2 weapon attritubes with the SAME NAME but different bonuses. which is hella weird and a screwup imo.

Thanks to both of you. I got my weapons down to around 700 or so. I should be more vigilant about keeping house in my weapon stash. What weapon attribute is that, mesmerMAN?

Is this normal or am I doing something incredibly wrong ?

I don't remember having trouble with that particular mission, but I did do Lu Bu's storyline third. I may have had better weapons by that point. I'll replay it in a bit to jog my memory.

Just finish Shu story mode and man I love the Shu kingdom. They also have so much fun playable characters during the story Yueying, Xing Cai, Xu Shu, Guan Yu, Liu Bei, Guan Yingping.

The battle of Fan Castle during historical route,
when Guan Yu dies standing
reminded me of what happened in One Piece during the Marineford war.

I wished I got into the DW games sooner, I have a question, are the Gundam and One Piece DW games worth getting? Fan of both series and plan on picking up both, DW: Gundam 3 and Pirate Warriors 2, just wanted to know if they are worth picking up.

well if the combat system in DW8 doesnt bore you then yes it uses the same core mechanic in both Gundam and One Piece, get both One Pieve games (1 follows the story, 2 is a new unique story) as for Gundam, get 3 and maybe the new one

It was Aggression in 8 , but in Extreme Legends they changed Attack up if both weapons have the same Affinity to be Harmony instead and the other one remains Aggression (I think its Attack up, defense down one).

Aggression is Musou damage up.
Harmony (what was also called Aggression) is attack up if both weapons have the same affinity.
Frenzy is the attack up, defense down one.

Yes, both DW Gundam 3 and One Piece 2 are great musou games. Definitely get them.

So I had always known about this series but never played it much.

But I was watching the Giant Bomb Quicklook, and even though they hated it, I really enjoyed it.

Got the game, have been playing the Wei Story Mode (on Normal) and having a blast.

Some of the cutscenes are laughably bad but some are nice.

The feeling of being a one-man army is awesome :)

Don't get the first One Piece game. That game is terrible. The second one is leagues better, fixing almost everything wrong with the first one and improving gameplay across the board.

Finally had a chance to have an hour or so playing this today and i'm loving it so far. I've always been intrigued by the games but never had a system to play them on until recently. So far i've only cleared the 4 tutorials and started the Wei campaign.

On a similar note i have these in my wishlist are they worth getting down the line?

Samurai Warriors 3 (Wii)
Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes (Wii)
Warriors Orochi 3: Hyper (Nintendo Wii U)
One Piece Unlimited World Red (Nintendo Wii U)

Agree with this 100%. The first game should have been called One Piece: QTE Hell

Warriors Orochi 3 is great. Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate (Musou Orochi 2 Ultimate) has the most content, and it's coming for PS4 in June in Japan. If it gets localized, get it instead of Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper.

Attack rating on the right. The white dots above the weapon name tells you what level it is, so the more dots the higher the attack will be. You can use any weapons with any character but I generally pick the EX weapon plus another weapon that has 4 star compatibility for the damage bonus.

Y2Kev

That means you have to equip the weapon to see the attack rating. That's what I thought. I was surprised by that.

Playing through a battle on Wu yesterday and about 20 minutes in after completing most of my mission objectives the game crashed on me. It gave me some error code and invited me to share the problem with Playstation but was mostly just disheartening because I lost all the progress and will of course have to do that one over.

Are crashes common with DW8 on PS4?

Shouldnt be? I have not had a crash yet on the JP version?

How do you tell which weapon is ex enabled again?
Basically the game is set up where every single character has their own weapon class, the one with an EX by it. If you hit R1 when selecting a weapon you can filter out all the others to only show their EX weapons (It'll say Favorite Weapon for the filter).

Everyone has 2 EX attacks (which is shown on the info screen) that only they can do with their EX weapon. IE: Anyone can use the Podao, yet Xaihou Dun can do a multi-slash follow up to the [] /\ uppercut and an AoE fire blast followup to the [] [] /\ attack when he uses it.

  • I am totally confused by the weapon selection interface. I never know if a certain character should use a certain weapon or if I'm out to swap them around. Then when I do swap them around, the game just has "compatibility" and no easy-to-see measure of strength from what I can tell.
The weapon system allows you to use other weapons besides just the characters EX (unlike basically how all the previous games were where everyone only could use their weapons). This is where the compatibility system comes into place. Each weapon class falls into one of 4 categories: Dash, Dive, Shadow Sprint or Whirlwind. A character will always have 4 stars in whatever category their EX weapon is. Higher compatibility increases the weapons attack rating (from +2 to +10) and at 4 stars you can that category's specific action:
  • Dash types can jump cancel their attacks and press jump again in the air for an air dash.
  • Dive types can press jump while being knocked back from the enemy to perfect a special recovery.
  • Shadow Sprint types can press square while doing a triangle attack to do a forward charge that lets you continue your combo (it resets you, so you can do say [] [] /\ /\ /\ with someone, press square before its over to do the dash then start up another combo immediately after).
  • Whirlwind types have a wind aura on most of their attacks which increases their attack range. This is typically seen on stronger, slower weapons.

That means you have to equip the weapon to see the attack rating. That's what I thought. I was surprised by that.
When you equip weapons you first choose the weapon class (Podao, Axe, Horsehair Whip, etc...). Then when you select that, you get to choose the weapon itself (IE: Pick Podao, then you have all the Podaos you've collected and can choose the one to equip). It is here where you see the Attack strength and all the Elements on it.

I'd suggest just using the Ex weapon for your main weapon whenever you try a new character out, and using the second weapon to pick whichever weapon you've enjoyed using the most so far. As you get more indepth with the game and start playing on the higher difficulties, then you can find weapons that work well together with their switch attacks to allow fancy combos and/or you can start building weapons with different elements combinations for specific situations (IE: high musou gain w/ increased musou attack damage for musou spamming, recovery + defensive elements to use when your health runs low, slash + thunder + induction + lighting etc... for large elemental damage).

Heh, or you know use Halberd and C2 all the way :D
Bonus if you are Lu Bu

it takes some allure from lvl 5 weapons when you can make a lv3 weapon stronger than them :C

Isn't level 4 better? Level 3 is a specific star weapon no?

yes, but there's a higher chance of finding a blank lvl 3 that you can manipulate than a lv 4. and the difference in attack power is usually negligible if you can add flash+induction etc etc the 1 hitko and big damage attributes.

i just used lv 3 as an example

OMG thank you everyone for the tips!

I've found that niche communities that get shit on repeatedly by the "press" are really helpful and friendly in gaming! Big communities for AAA games are usually full of jerks.
