E3 2008 Nintendo Conference

It's obvious that Nintendo is now using E3 to reach out to the mainstream media and court 3rd party publishers. .

I don't think P.C's like this effectively court 3rd party publishers

Not surprising to me, but I think regardless of what comes out later, the conference is just a really blatant example of how Nintendo doesn't give a shit about "core" gamers. That what people are reacting to here, but a lot of people here realized this long, long, ago and have moved on to MS and Sony for the majority of their gaming.

Maybe, it all depends on how the rest of E3 and the year goes down. They may have stolen and ruined "our" event and given it away to the casuals but in the end all that matters to me is if the games are delivered not when theyre announced.

Wii Music looks horrible. You just press random buttons and flail your arms and the software plays notes related to the song being played. The motion control detection seemed real off (especially with the drums). The only cool thing about it was the use of the balance board for the pedals.

Why would anyone want this game though? Its air guitar which you have to pay for. At least stuff like Rock Band and Guitar Hero take skill to make the music come out right.
But isnt that basically what you do in Wii Sports? And we all know how that worked out for nintendo...

GitarooMan said:
I hoped for that for years, but it seems like they are content to just pump out another Mario and another Zelda in 2009-10 to satiate Nintenfans and have no real interest in any new core gamer IPs.

I'm sure there are more first-party core game announcements coming in the near future, but this really is a shame.

Nintendo doesn't need to operate around the industry anymore. To suggest that Nintendo needs to "use" E3 for media exposure when they get access to daytime talk shows, news programs, enormous billboards in Times Square, the blogosphere, etc., is like some kind of rationalizing yourself out of the picture. There's no reason to believe they couldn't have taken 5 minutes out of the conference to show Pikmin 3 (which I believe exists).
That's a fair point, but E3 is when you show your companies policy and direction, so it makes more sense to show off the casual face that they're trying to cultivate. Plus, games like Zelda or Mario or Pikmin take time to make. It may have just been a case of Nintendo didn't have anything presentable to show at this point. The lack of any core game announcement's at all is a bit worrying, but again it's obvious they're there, so question becomes, "why weren't they shown?" That's the point I'm trying to make. GAF's over reacting.

How in the world was so little shown? This is especially perplexing because we have no idea (officially anyway) as to what studios are working on what. If I recall from the speculation thread we have no games known under development for over half of Nintendo's teams.

This isnt a new market or genre of gaming, the PARADIGM has shifted.

In 10 years we wont see anymore Ninja Gaiden, Halo, or Final Fantasy. The titles we currently enjoy will be put on gaming development's financial back-burner and fade into niche obscurity like fighting games, top-down shooters and PC-adventure of the past decade.

Aaaand here we go.

whoa okay so i just woke up. Did nintendo's conference totally flop? Was there no news of, say, a new DS, or a new zelda game like people have been speculating?

A bit disappointed, where was the HDD announcement or at least them unlocking the SD slot? Where was their major game announcement? Animal Crossing will be sweet, but come on.

I just want Nintendo to actually try another truly original IP aimed at those who loved games such as Zelda or Metroid. They have plenty of money and success now. Such a title would be truly fantastic.
They will, just don't ever expect it to be shown at E3.

Go back to bed. Trust me.

Was Brawl in last year's press kit? If not, there's still some hope of another stealth trailer release for a core game before the end of E3.

Come on, you know new Marios and Zeldas and Pikmins are coming. What's the big fucking deal? It's perfectly reasonable to declare Nintendo's E3 press conference a massive failure, but to proclaim that Nintendo is dead and you're selling your Wii would be denying the existence of these games. Just because they weren't shown here doesn't mean they aren't coming.

E3 has changed dramatically from what it was. The mainstream press is taking notice of it now, Nintendo is simply showing them what they want to see. I'm just think there's no reason to be so deliriously furious.

This is GAF. Hysterical overreactions are our forte. (Not that the conference didn't suck, though...)

I don't care what Nintendo fans will say but that was horrifically boring. I feel like they are either running out of ideas for this system or just not showing anything. I'm guessing the former, but we'll see.

By far the worst E3 from Nintendo.

oh god, good thing I didn't actually watch it

I wouldn't be surprised if they gave another certain title it's own presser. I'm talking specifically, but won't comment on it. Why they didn't show it here is beyond me. Perhaps they now know the mainstream press follows them everywhere, and don't want to let them know they can still have appeal with the hardcore gamer.
wait what? are you implying you know something we don't?

Oh please, Wii Fit posed more of a thread (if any) to hardcores than Wii Music does. At least Wii Music looks fun.

What? It's the exact opposite! At least Wii Fit had redeeming features, what part of this clusterfuck of a game looks fun to you?

That was pathetic. From the crazy lady at the start trying to prove that her son loves her (wtf?) to Wii Sports 2: Casual Sports for Casual Gamers, that was a very weak press conference.

I wander back over to the gaming side, and this is what I see?
God damn, all the bitter tears in this thread explain the downpour earlier on in the day.

From what I see, they didn't announce much. Oh well. I'll can catch up on Okami, Zack & Wiki, and No More Heroes. (Not to mention MK and SMG. Shit. : ( )

Hopefully, for you fellows this emotionally attached to a gaming conference, 3rd parties will announce something nice soon. Aren't there a couple of more days in E3 anyways? I recall Brawl was announced after the conference itself occurred.

I know. It's disappointing. Mario Galaxy shows just how much talent Nintendo has and seeing them try something original would be so awesome.

I think this has more to do with fuckwits at MS and Sony pricing themselves out of the market. Not only did higher prices limit the userbase for the systems, but it made games much more expensive to make. Notice all the mergers going on? The buyouts? The companies failing over the last 6 years? That's not a good sign.

By gaging the reaction in this thread I expect the post conference interviews to go something like.

1up: So umm.............wtf?
Reggie: We hate you.
1up: No Shit!

I ALMOST halway thought about buying a Wii the other day when I saw one in Wal-Mart for the first time in my life.

:lol I'm glad I decided to stick with systems that have real games coming out in the future.

I will say that I did believe Nintendo's PR speak that they would find a balance between the hardcore and the softcore gamer (remember that third pillar stuff before DS was such a success?). Why wouldn't I when they had Wii Sports and Zelda out at the same time. But, it appears that they themselves are not going to live up to their promises. I'm convinced that this year is their test year to see if they can get away with not supporting the hardcore audience with a tent-pole production. Animal Crossing Wii is not it, and I still have problems believing that Reggie thinks that it is. They are really getting god at lying.

Expect next year "hardcore" missing from their vocabulary altogether. But, i don't get where all the hate from the hardcore is coming from. I've lost touch with my Nintendo fanboy a log time ago, but it seems to me that people need to see these companies as business and not teams. If Nintendo does not want to make the games that I like (ie, large budget, in-depth titles) then I will buy something else. The industry is just too large to care anymore.

Not to mention that Nintendo are definitely helping the industry move out of the box. The 1 vs 100 concept was awesome to me. I don't need avatars, but that new dashboard looks sweet. There is unprecedented amounts of variety in the market today. Why all the hate?

You mean like when Reggie said that fucking AC was for hardcore gamers, right?

The part that upsets people is that THIS is the face they are trying to put out there now. That the hardcore gamer community is reliable enough that we'll take whateverthefuck they decide to throw to us, when they feel like it. The old 'You got your 3 fucking games be happy' isn't good enough, sorry.

Makes sense for Nintendo to do what they did today.

They do need to anticipate the maturing of the mindset of the avg Wii gamer, More in depth waggle is great but not an exit strategy, and have the harder-core games coming out for Holiday 2009 and 2010. Not doing that is dumb.

People fail to realize the reality of Game development prices etc. Not every development studio has sony/microsoft waving them a 50 million dollar check to make sure even if it flops they stay in operation.

Wii has plenty of games coming out and im sure that more will be announced...

The conference was terrible... and showed very little of the lineup...

the 3 third party choices were strange, but maybe they were trying to appeal to everyone? casual core and mainstream gamers?

wii music does not look great

motion plus looks good

They should have at least showed a reel with upcoming games.... at least to remind us games are coming....
rb2. gh4, mad world, all the new sims games, ea sports, lwario, sluggers, the conduit, ittle king story, tecmo bowl, harvest moon, the announce rpgs, fragile, fatal frame.....

we really got nothing but animal crossing, wii music, sports 2, and snowboard...

Yeah, it's earily reminiscent of the PC industry circa 1996-1999. :(

It let's you simulate music? It just seems more game-y to me than Wii Fit, which I see as one of those fitness DVDs plus a peripheral.

Doesn't this debacle basically further suggest that third party developers aren't interested in the Wii? What other explanation can you arrive at after watching Nintendo claim there are "too many" up-coming third party titles to show, therefore highlighting a Call of Duty title, another Rayman minigame title, and a Star Wars title that is going to all the consoles in some form or fashion eventually.

I am with you on that. The game clearly changed its direction totally. Initially they talked about making your own music etc. now its what it is
