E3 2008 Nintendo Conference

haunts said:
All in all its good they are taking on this position. Ive always said that. Better Nintendo then Sony or something.. They are expanding the market with these types of games, and its only natural for a portion of that market to want to move onto a real hd gaming console at some point like the PS3.

I gave the Wii a chance and had high hopes, but I wasn't delusional after I played it. Knew right off the bat it was coming to this, but its not a bad thing guys! Relaaaax...
It feels less like an expansion of the market, and more like growth of a different market imo. Or, maybe just a return to the old NES market in a way; back when games were simple and everybody played, before 20 button controllers and long tutorials, while the other consoles are moving in a different direction.

I've been saying for a while that I'm not sure if we can compare Wii sales to 360/PS3 sales directly, because they really are hitting on very different markets. This press conference solidifies that more than anything imo; GAF is calling it out as one of the worst ever, but you know this stuff is going to sell a billion copies.

I'm happy with my Wii, because there are a couple of hardcore games on it to keep me happy, plus some simpler party style stuff that my wife and friends can jump in and play with me. I don't think I could be happy with just a Wii by itself, though; I think I could be happy with just a 360 or PS3 by itself. When setting up my budget for the rest of the year the last week or so, I couldn't think of a single Wii game that I wanted to pick up. That's not to say that it won't get played (still haven't opened Twilight Princess or Z&W, and Mario Kart + Wii Sports still get a lot of play), but "Wii time" in my living room just feels more and more like "family board game time" than "Monroeski's video game time."

I may already own all the Wii games I will ever need to fulfill its role in my house (though I will of course buy more eventually)

Yes and Kagari should be banned.
To be fair his City Folk thing was exactly corret even on the graphics front. It sucks, because that made me think Pikmin was gonna be thre though.
I'm gonna assume it exists and will come out at a later time.
Remember the suprise SSBB trailer?
No point in getting hopes up though. Its gonna be a hard day if you only own a Wii, but I dont think they should overreact and say things they will regret.
Its pretty obvious that Nintendo has something cooking.

Still, I'm glad I have a 360 (plus my Netflix subscription!)

P.S. seriously Wario, disaster, Fatal Frame and Kirby werent even there.
Curious about Flock and Mad World later...

Reggie on G4:

"How could hardcore gamers feel left out after that conference? We announced Animal Crossing: City Folk, which everybody's been asking for... and uh, GTA DS. Again, how could the hardcore feel left out?"

Paraphrased

Quoted for historical purposes.

I watched that whole thing...

It's like Nintendo created a new breed of gaming - super-casuals.

They even said, word for word, that Wii Music is for people that have no talent but want to make music - my goodness...

It's like they totally forgot about the even slightly-hardcore gamer...

Can't believe this is the same Nintendo that was the home of the original Ninja Gaidens, Battletoads, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and countless other games that busted your balls growing up - and they have no one to blame for this image but themselves.

That was GARBAGE...

Though I'm gonna buy Wii Sports Resort just for that sword game...

Mii Music, looks like it controlled like crap, and it sounded like crap too...
Never been a fan of Animal Crossing...

I really though at the end they were gonna announce some core game...
Really I did. :(
This fall/winter I don't think I'm buying anything for the Wii...

What the hell were you thinking, Nintendo? You make me put up with Cammy for half the conference and then you don't announce anything hardcore? Ugh. So lame.

Whaaa? Nintendo at the top (the NES/SNES days) was the golden age of gaming...
Only because Sega came along as created competition for a company that was making sure it was on top by any means necessary, and forced them to advance. If Nintendo had it their way they would of probably stuck with the NES for many more years than they did. Just look at the game boy: they had no strong competition so they pretty much stuck with the same technology for about a decade.

i can assure you, it was not the golden age for how they treated developers.

Maybe. But, at the very least, back then they used to make...well...games. Today they develop...things for people who hate or just don't care for gaming.

Now the best thing is that I don't fucking care about Animal Crossing. It's basically the same N64 game over and over again. First GC, then DS, now Wii. I don't know why people are still hyped about this.

Seriously, Wii's lineup for the rest of the year is complete shit. Shit. On a stick.

I hope someone puts this Reggie interview on G4 on youtube because his backpedaling regarding hardcore getting left out was so lolsy

At GDC, Reggie did say that they would show their "big" holiday title at E3, and that it was something people already knew about. I thought it was pretty obvious he was talking about Animal Crossing.

Anyway, i turned this off when they booted up that Ubi snowboard game and never looked back.

Don't worry, you quoted him so he'll provide you with plenty more words. You can save yours.

Well, I know enough to know that anything I say would not make a dent. So I'll just keep enjoying my PC games, 360 games, PS3 games, and even my Wii games. That a mod is able to continually post this kind of ish is beyond me.

Nintendo am sleeping with your Grandma and boss. Ninty doesn't love us. They love everyone else but us. FUCK YOU NINTENDO!!! GRRR... *Punts Wii out window*

Gamers destroyed Sony after E3 2006, and now gamers are looking to revolt against Nintendo in 2008. Nintendo will learn not fuck with the core gamer.
Nintendo's been being dished by gamers far longer than that.

Nintendo has such incredible potential to deliver amazing core games from Retro, EAD Tokyo and the Zelda team but instead of even a mention we get an awkward Wii Music demonstration. I'm definitely looking forward to Wii Sports Resort and Wii Music but where are the titles that bring the wiimote to life like Metroid Prime? At least we could have seen a short clip of random games like new Excite Truck, Endless Ocean Adventure or Star Fox Wii. Aye. 1:1 motion for nothing.

Wait, is this true? Did this really just happen on G4??????

Morgan Webb: So Reggie what do you have to say to harcore gamers who might feel left out by you at this point?

Reggie: How can you possibly feel left out. We've got Animal Crossing with voice chat fully hooked up the internet, and Grand Theft Auto on the DS, so how can you possibly feel left out?

:lol :lol :lol :lol

You will get crucified for saying that here. Sour grapes and w/e else. I own a Wii too, but yeah its a very different system and a very different market. At the same time, with that market being so huge, even if a portion moves over to HD gaming at some point I think thats a good thing. Without the Wii, would they have ever considered gaming -at all-?

That's what really frustrates me about Nintendo. Casual gamers aren't watching this! My mom isn't calling me every two minutes going "are you seeing all the awesome shit Nintendo's puttin' out!" NO! Jeebus, throw me a fuckin' bone will you! I mean sure I'll be buying Resort but am I peeing my pants for it? No, I'm not. The next Call Of Duty game, on Wii? That's what I'm supposed to be excited about? Hello?! If I want it I'll get it for my 360 or PS3 where it'll actually look good (although, for a Wii game, I thought it looked pretty good). HELLO!!! Is anybody out there at Nintendo actually listening? What's-her-name asks Reggie "what about the hardcore gamer?" and Reggie's like "Animal Crossing!" Man o' Christ what planet am I on!

After seeing endless bitching about how G4 is mainstream and etc., they did broadcast it, so I bet some watched it.

Yeesh, I'm glad I'm not freaking out like most people are, I have more than enough to handle on upcoming games.

I don't get it where are the games we even know Nintendo's making? They're not on the press site at all.

I never would have believed it, but Drinky Crow turned out to be quite the visionary. If anything, in hindsight, he was a bit understated.

It was entertaining to watch, though. Instead of literally yawning a couple of times at the 360 conference (haven't yawned in quite a while), I was enthralled with how much Nintendo was blowing my mind.

No first party DS games at ALL
No WiiWare games at ALL, be it first party or 3rd party
No single core Wii game SHOWN, not to mention nothing announced
So then where are they? Why didn't Nintendo show any of it? It's safe to assume that it's not that they don't have any... but then..?

The only thing potentially interesting I saw from the conference was Cooking Navi. But still, that's a maybe.

With SMB:Galaxies, SMK:Wii & SSB:Melee all releasing so close I was afraid Nintendo had blown their load early in... that may have been the case...

I had an idea it would be shit but that was fucked beyond comprehension.

Wasn't there supposed to be a punchout game? What happened to that? Thrown in the trash along with the rest of Nintendo's 25 year gaming pedigree?

This company is dead to you 'fanboys' here and you're too stupid to see it. They just keep stringing you along. Move on.
