E3 2011 Sony Conference Thread [Over]

I wouldn't expect more than 20% of the conference to be devoted to the Wii.

Here's hoping this holds true, it would be great to end this e3 on a high note, instead of the current state of brown note.

As someone said earlier, based on the first party announcements we heard today for 2012 and beyond, I think new consoles are coming sooner than some of the 2014/2015 crowd think. It wouldn't surprise me to see PS4/Xbox3 in Fall 2012.

It wasn't a great conference to be honest, better than MS (not difficult) but not as good as 2010.

There were no real surprises for PS3. Sly 4 would have been a nice reveal if they hadn't already released a teaser. That Dust 514 thing is a third party exclusive but that's only because MS probably turned it down. The new Move games looked OK I suppose. Otherwise it was lacking impact on the PS3 front.

The Vita stuff was good but I was disappointed that Sony decided to showcase first party games after we heard about most of them last week. The stand out moment of the whole show was clearly the price for Vita which is extremely competitive and will put the fear into Nintendo. Almost a megaton.

Nothing im really interested in, always hated the Rachet and Sly games. Insomniac are as bland as ever.

But uncharted 3 does look amazing. What a trailer!

Why would Sony show games like Twisted Metal, Journey, etc be shown again this year? They are all on the show floor, surely within the time limit they can only show so much, and they needed plenty of time for the PSV. They had to show some move stuff even though what they showed was worse than last year, have to show they are still supporting the device, but the bioshock infinite move controls could work well. I expect come Gamescom that Sony will be showing more PS3/PSV games, and TGS will show Last Guardian and give a WW release window. The infamous 2 showing was a bit strange, but it makes sense to show one of their big exclusives off a few days before release to all the poeple watching, a world wide free advert i guess.

There was some filler (especially Kaz going on about.....nothing) that could've easily been used to show even trailers of more games. The conference is already almost 2 hours, and you can't scrounge up even 30 seconds for Twisted Metal and Journey trailers?

I agree though, it's a pick-and-choose proposition and certain things will be left out. They certainly will show more at other conferences (GamesCom, TGS etc.).

- Not satisfied with the apology. They never said hey we screwed up, but we are doing everything we can to make our online data secure. This will stop. If they keep up this negative momentum they'll fall behind woeful nintendos online. I was impressed with their Netflix claim.
wow did sony kill your freakin dog or something? some of you guys crying about "sorry isn't enough" are ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC.

edit: when psn finally came back i bet you downloaded those free games as fast as you could though huh?

Have to agree.

They apologized twice and it was done so in a professional manner. Yes the network outage was a nuisance, but you got free games, PSN+ and now an apology.

Let bygones be bygones.

Couldn't believe how dull this conference was last night, it was on par with Microsofts for me, except at least Microsoft had that Halo 4 announcement. I can't believe they didn't show at least a Last Guardian trailer, yet they had time to show that ridiculously dull sorcery game and spend far too long on Move and 3D, both of which I have zero interest in.

I give it a C, same thing I gave Microsoft. It's up to you now Nintendo.

Someone has to edit that "The PS3 has no games" comic to "The PS3 has no NEW games". I guess I won't run out of games for the PS3 but a few really new things would have been cool. My expectations have already been lowered because I thought a huge portion of the conference would be about the Vita - but not even that surprised me. Why spend so much money on a show when basicly everything has been said/shown already. I doubt casual gamers from the EU stay up until 2am to watch the show ... unlike me :)

Watched it in bed, at 2 in the morning. :P

It was a nice show, fo sho. I never got really bored (well, that Medival game didnt look that hot tbh). LBP on PSV and the console itself looked fantastic, as did Uncharted 3.

I went to bed ahead of schedule because it was boring as fuck. Did they really not demo The Last Guardian? Show any new good stufF?

Pretty darn terrible. Big disappointment. Like MS' show nothing really impressed. It was a long drawn out, tedious 2 hours. I don't think I've laughed so hard in a while at that medievil game. Great job, Jeremy XD It looked bad, worse than Sorcery. That Dust game looks as generic as they come. File under Haze. Uncharted was the best of a bad bunch, it looked impressive but the demo hardly set my pulse racing too much. R3 looked nice again but nothing thats got me running to my local to pre-order. Nothing on Vita caught my eye. Sure Uncharted looked nice again but not enough for me to shell out for new hardware. I think I'll sell on my Move stuff. There was nothing there I'd buy for it and I'd rather just use a pad for the stuff it supports.

Everything was just as expected and there was no surprise. Nice there's a date for Team ICO collection though. I was looking for something new and came away disappointed. Even Starhawk isn't getting me excited enough :(

If its it out next year it will probably be to TGS

Have to admit, Sony really had a great conference this year.

Sly 4 was a nice surprise and Uncharted 3 looked sick!

PSVita software lineup and launch price show Sony is aggressively after 3DS.

Ok now here is the thing:

What problems could possibly occur if I import the PSV from the USA for $249? It will be by far cheaper then paying €249...

So what are the complications that can occur like compatibility etc.

Thanks in advance

I think this conference showed that Sony has given up on the US. Not even any Japanese games. I guess Sony will keep all the good stuff for TGS.

The price of the Vita is pretty good and it seems like a capable device. I doubt the market is there though... seems like phones and pads are eating up the mobile market. I hope Sony does not sell them at a loss.

Was anyone else super excited when they announced Medievil Move? I was thinking Skyward Sword killer. Sure, the franchise hasn't been relevant in ages but I thought the only reason to bring it back, for Move, would be to make it fuck awesome and go all IN YOUR FACE NINTENDO. Then they just showed that on rails mess. What a freakin waste, Sony.

That was a so-so conference at best. A really poor showing for the PS3 redeemed with a great (but poorly presented) Vita showcase.

In the hour or so dedicated to the PS3 there were FIVE games based around shooting, a trailer for a platformer (no gameplay), a terrible demo for a sports game with what may well be the most tacked on motion control support that I have ever seen and a hideous on-rails motion-control based adventure game. The variety and pacing of the first part was just atrocious; I said that Sony needed to come out swinging to get back some of the lost interest after the PSN debacle; instead, like in previous years, Sony came out talking. When will Sony realise that no one cares about this 'power of PS3' BS that they spout, they really should take a leaf out of Microsoft (but just this leaf only) and Nintendo and cut down on the chit-chat.

As for the footage itself, nothing really impressed me. UC3 seemed to take what I hope to be the most scripted sequence of the game to show. R3 looked nice but the demo was far too short and was again overly scripted. Dust looked so ordinary and I expected something more when the EVE devs came on stage. There was no sign of Agent, The Last Guardian or even one of the many Final Fantasy titles releasing soon and there was nothing out of the ordinary. It's a sad thing when Machinarium in the opening sizzle reel is what got me the most excited during the first half.

The NGP/Vita segment saved the conference from being one of the worst of recent times. Despite some awful presentation skills (there must have been some really steep steps to get onto that stage), I thoroughly enjoyed what was shown. There was a great variety of new titles shown (dungeon crawler, FPS, action/adventure, LBP, fighter) though what was more interesting were the connectivity options, such as the abiity to exit a game from Vita and continue on the PS3 as well as cross-platform play and the like. The hardware itself looked amazing, though I'd be frightened of using the touch screen for fear of leaving fingerprints on that pristine OLED screen. And then they had the price: at the equivalent of $249 in £, I would be tempted to buy one at launch even though I promised myself that I would never buy a console at launch ever again.

Overall, the conference was certainly disappointing, though I found it much better than EA's and Microsoft's pitiful attempts at generating excitement for their products. For the next time though, I hope Sony learns to tone down the shooter saturation and bring us more genres, such as RPGs and they learn to shut the fuck up every now and then. Additionally, since there are a number of titles suspiciously omitted (such as GG's new IP and The Last Guardian), I take it that Sony have something significant to show at Gamescom and at TGS to make up for it. Or at least they better had.

Sorry for creating a game-list now, but I want to round up all known and coming (retail) PS3 exclusives in no particular order:

Twisted Metal
Sly 4
The Last Guardian
Uncharted 3
Starhawk
Dust 514
Resistance 3
GoW: Origins Collection
R&C: All 4 One
Ruin
Sorcery (ehh)
Medieval Moves (ehh)
Final Fantasy Versus 13 (lol)
Agent (LOL)

Did I miss anything? Despite what I think of their conference (it was really subpar), they still have a lot of exclusive retail games in the pipeline, so personally I can't complain too much. Still, I'm curious to see what SSM and Guerrilla Games have been up to.

agree, if you can't even accept an apology from Jack Tretton, something's wrong with you

Good write-up--I agree completely. I was pleased with the variety of genres of games shown for the Vita although I wish it was paced a little better. The PS3 showing was lackluster but I am psyched for Sly 4.

I really liked the conference. Lots of games I am actually interested in, and the 3D monitor and Vita prices are bang on. One thing I find odd though is just how little new games were announced at the conferences today. Probably just fallout from the fact that too much was announced too early last year.

I went from being firmly in the "no more handhelds" camp to the "day 1" camp with the phrase $249, and the connectivity options. I'll get me a NGP for sure. Plus being able to download and enjoy the persona's that have come over to the PSP is just icing on the cake. I'll be there.

It felt too me that Sony just had way too much to show in such a small time frame, although there were a lot of missed oppertunities. The PS3 software reveals were pretty lackluster but I think they just didn't have enough time. I'm sure they've got tons of stuff they had to cut out which can be left to brew and revealed at a later date and I'm find with that.

Ok show. It got me excited about Vita which is the best thing I can say about the conference. None of the PS3 game spotlights really resonated with me like the Twisted Metal announcement last year. Of course I'm looking forward to Uncharted3 and all that, just don't feel the need to see another demo of it.

i do not know. with such lackluster showings from MS and SONY i really think if Nintendo just gives us a look at Cafe for 2 minutes they will have single handedly stolen the show.

Only if it has zelda and a 6990...otherwise, the NGP will probably impress me more...near ps3 graphics on handheld>>slightly above ps3 graphics on a console. If it can't even keep up with current pc graphics it will be a disappointment.

What's with all this negativity.
They showed thons of content,
Vita has a sick pricepoint,
continued hardcore support for the move,
exclusive content and support on many new third party devs
and lot's of 3d enabled content in the future.

Their trailers showed machinarium running on a ps system,
as well as a new vanillaware game for the vita,
which both got me super exited.

Maybe there weren't many surprises,
but what was there was good.
One of the better shows in a long time imo.

I'm thinking Vita will be essentially DOA (same with 3DS).

I'm not saying that the hardware isn't compelling and that I don't think it will sell out and sell well for the first couple months. The problem is the business model for mobile has changed and Sony can't realistically expect the Vita to be a five year machine anymore. It's going to be technologically lapped by cellphones and tablets within a year if not sooner. Mobile 3D performance is jumping by at least a factor of two every year.

The pricing will definitely be an issue. Yes, $249 is a good price for the device in a vacuum. Unfortunately, it's competing with subsidized mobile devices. $500, $600, and $700 devices are selling for $199 or lower on contract. That's a difficult row to hoe for a device with a limited scope of usage.

Ultimately, I think the Playstation Suite on Android is going to be much more successful for Sony than the Vita. I'm a bit surprised they didn't focus on it more.

You cannot discount Japan and Asia when you talk about PS Vita. It's like half of the market IIRC.

I basically feel like the Vita was made for Japan first. Other markets second.

True... if it can convert the current PSP buyers into Vita buyers things are looking good. For the rest of the planet it will be DOA. The age of dedicated mobile consoles is at an end. Maybe not for hardcore gamers... but the market has shrunk dramatically.

The point is Sony is not trying to compete with phones, nor are they trying to replace them. Its an affordable device that offers premium gaming content and interface, which consumers could hypothetically own in addition to their smart phone. So long as mobile devices are limited by stagnating battery technology, so long as phones are unable to deliver sophisticated controls necessary for hardcore gaming, so long as smart phones are too expensive to buy for your children, there will be a place for dedicated portable gaming devices.

I would disagree based on the games we've seen so far and the emphasis on connectivity.

Sales numbers say it's false.

The question is.. does hardcore gaming and mobile gaming really go together?

I am a hardcore gamer at home... but I just can't do hardcore mobile gaming. Sales numbers from yes *gasp* Apple suggest the world is moving in another direction. Damn Angry Birds is selling more than Pokemon (actually I didn't check the actual sales numbers... but you get my point :) ). The Vita is also not small... so more something you carry around on a real holiday in your hand luggage, not on your daily commute to work.

Oh well.. we will see. I am not overly negative or positive about it and I *am* developing for mobile devices mainly now. So the more the merrier! I am just not a fan of "Ooooohhh Shiny!!! MUST BUY" posts of a lot of people.

Sales numbers say it's false.

NOT
