The Smash Brothers Documentary Series - If you want to learn more about the challengers.

General Background on these players:

Milktea: Old school Peach main, she joined the scene as PC Chris’ girlfriend and always teamed with him at events. They’ve since broken up, obviously, and she took a long break from Smash. It wasn’t until last year with the resurgence (and of course, being featured in the “The Smash Brothers” documentary) she came back to the community. She doesn’t appear to compete as much but she’s still very good with Peach in Melee. It’s uncertain who she will pick since Peach isn’t available in the roster.

HugS: Old school Samus main, he has been in the community since practically the beginning. He’s always strived to be at the top and at one point, back in the old 2006 MLG days, he was. He’s still a very competitive person and possibly the only old school player that can still compete with the likes of SoCal’s best (such as Westballz, DEHF, MacD, and so on). Likely to be the only player that will pick Samus.

LiquidKen: Known as the “King of Smash”, he’s one of the only Smash players to have held title as “the best” for several years. As a Marth main, Ken used to be very arrogant and overly confident about himself and this was very apparent when he was in Survivor: Gabon. However, since rejoining the Smash competitive scene over the last year, his attitude has changed. He’s still got a bit of an ego (as evidenced by how many trophies he has in his room…) but he’s aware of how much he’s fallen as a player since he hadn’t been playing for over 5 years. Likely to try and go for Marth. It’s worth noting Ken competed at EVO 2008 when Brawl with items was on there and placed in 2nd.

LiquidKDJ: Another old school top player from back in the MLG days, KoreanDJ was always a bit of a “shark”. He challenged himself at every tournament to money match any player he could to get any data about them. Even made a list to the point where he would cross off names of the players he’s beaten in a MM. He placed higher than Ken at SKTAR 3, a recent Melee major so he’s making his way back to the top faster. He mains Sheik in Melee but his secondary is Marth so his character of choice may be Marth… but who knows when there’s so many other players who want Marth for this event. It’s worth noting KoreanDJ played and won at one of those “official” Nintendo Gamestop tournaments for Brawl in 2008 -- winning that special Wii console.

Crs.Hungrybox: One of the top 5 players of the current competitive Melee scene, Hungrybox is a Jigglypuff main who is very charismatic, humble, and dedicated. He’s been hated over the years for playing such a “lame” Jigglypuff but more recently he’s been getting a little more positive reaction from the community. He also dabbles a little in Ness and Falco, though he never uses them too seriously. Since Jigglypuff is not in the roster of characters to choose from, it is unknown who he might pick but since he uses Mario in Project M it’s likely he might just pick him.

MIOM | PewPewU: One of NorCal’s best players and another Marth main, PewPewU is a very excitable and nice Smasher overall. He’s constantly pushing himself to improve and help others improve as well. He’s one of the new school players that is considered to be near the top echelon of players for Melee. Again, since he mains Marth it’s likely he’s going to go for him but there’s other people who want Marth so it’s possible his second choice would be Greninja (he has said he’s interested in the character).

EG.PPMD: Currently considered to be the best Smash player for Melee at the moment, Falco main and seconds Marth PPMD is a very articulate, intelligent, and personable Smasher. Even though he rarely travels out to tournaments, he strives for consistency wherever he goes. Coming off of a recent huge win at SKTAR 3 he likely wants to prove himself as capable of adapting to a new game quickly. Since Falco is unavailable he is likely to go for his secondary, Marth, but he has gone on record that he has a list of characters in case Marth gets taken before he can get him -- characters such as Fox and Greninja as mentioned in this interview

TheRapture: Primarily known as a Brawl player and commentator, TheRapture is plainly just a nice person -- oh and he wants Ridley in Smash 4. Even though he may be known for his Brawl, he has been in the community for a long while. He played Melee competitively enough to have a Sheik as a main. It’s not too certain who he might be interested in picking for this event but with Sheik not available in the roster he’ll likely pick a character no one else will.

Lilo: Lilo comes from a very skilled Melee region, Arizona. She plays (or has played) with the likes of the infamous Melee Pikachu player Axe, the infamous Mewtwo player Taj, and AZ is even home to the old school player Forward who mained Marth. She is also a Peach main but don’t let the “unknown” aspect to her fool you, she’s surely to be pretty good at picking up the game -- though maybe not as quickly as the likes of PPMD or Hungrybox. It’s a little uncertain who she will pick since Peach isn’t available in the roster.

CTRL | DJNintendo: A newer school player who is from New York and primarily exceeds in teams tournaments in Melee. He’s widely known for his Bowser in Melee but he also has a very large selection of characters he uses in tournaments, from Mario to Fox to even Samus. He’s gone on record as saying he will definitely be repping Bowser at the Invitational.

MIOM | Toph: Toph has been in the community for years, since PC Chris’ trip to Hawaii (as mentioned in the “The Smash Brothers” documentary). He’s a very technical Fox main in Melee but also more recently commentates the game. He places pretty decently in tournaments although he’s not always at the top of his game (such is the life of a Fox main -- consistency is important). He is likely to pick Fox given his Melee main but he has shown interest in Greninja.

Peachyhime: Literally the only “unknown” player. She is a newer player to the community, a Project M player in fact (though she does dabble in Melee). She apparently is actually pretty good at PM, too. She is a Peach main and… again there’s not much about her to begin with. Since Peach is not available to choose from, it’s uncertain who she will pick.

Crismas: Apex series tournament organizer, Crismas has been around in the Smash community for many, many years. It’s unknown who she mains in Melee these days so who knows who she might pick at the Invitational.

MacD: New school SoCal player who is a Peach main and the manager of Curse’s Super Smash Bros. division. MacD is another very “teams” centered player but he’s also no joke at singles, placing very high at the stacked Super Smash Sundays locals every week. He hosts his own tournament series called “Mayhem” for both Melee and Project M. Since Peach isn’t available to choose from it’s hard to say who he might pick.

VGBC | aMSa: Known as the “Red Yoshi”, aMSa hails from Japan and made a big splash at Apex 2014 this year placing 9th with YOSHI -- considered to be one of the worst characters in Melee. More recently he placed 3rd at Republic of Fighters 3 (a big European tournament), almost taking out Leffen in Loser’s Finals. He’s all about “play to win” but since Yoshi isn’t available to choose from it’s uncertain who he will pick in the end.

CT | Zero: Known more for his Brawl placings, Zero is one of the only multi-Smash talented players at the Invitational. Zero is almost as good in Melee as he is in Brawl. In Melee he mains Fox and in Brawl he mains Meta Knight. He is a very technical player and learns things pretty quickly. Since he mains Fox in Melee and Fox is available he might pick him but it’s uncertain if he might risk it and pick a newcomer instead.

Revven for challengers' background informations

Here is the reason why I made the thread early so Georly and I want to collect more questions from Smashers so we can test them out at the stores to seeking for the answers.

And you can post now! :)

Thank you! Wonderful. I'll try to update the FAQ questions as I can, but I might need help! :)

Edit: Under FAQ (stage based), mechanics, line 3 is supposed to be another category. One for other, miscellaneous smash bros/gameplay mechanics. (star KOs, character intros, ledge mechanics, etc)

"qq more for corrected my terrible english"

I can't tell if this is intentional, just to be ironic, but in the off-chance it's not, *correcting

This is something I posted on GameFAQs for Tafokints to test out at E3 (since apparently he's going as a potential substitute for one of the players...) but just in case he happens to not test some of this stuff, I want Gaffers to:

The edge mechanics. Find out if you can cancel the tether latch by pressing down and then do another tether immediately after. See how many tethers you can do (in Brawl, you could do a max of 3 tethers). Link is confirmed to be in the demo build there so you should be able to test this (as well as ZSS). Find out how soon you can jump from the ledge (aka doing a ledgehop), Brawl had a set amount of frames before you could let go from the edge and jump. Find out if you can attack during ledgejumps (as in when you press a jump button while on the edge) and/or do anything else during ledgejumps. Find out if rolling onto the stage is possible to be used as an edgehog (doubtful but it could have a little more occupancy than Brawl, you never know). Finally, test out edgehogging and see if it's a legitimate strategy still.

Test out Sonic's Homing Attack, see if he can still stall under the stage when someone is within his homing range ala Brawl.

Test to see if Mega Man and Sonic can air dodge after their Up Bs.

Test to see if grabs restore character's jumps. Test to see if grab releasing chaingrabs are still in the game (and if they are, this isn't good lol).

Test to see if Bowser's Koopa Klaw can still be influenced by the person who is grabbed when they have lower % than him and vice versa.

See if momentum from a running jump is kept.

Check to see if any attacks can trip people (try this with Zelda's Down Tilt or even Bowser's Forward Tilt). I saw Bowser's Ftilt trip a character in one of the clips from the Smash Direct, I want to know if they've kept those in there or not as a holdover from Brawl.

Can't think of much else right now... those are my top ones.

Edit: Just remembered some more simple stuff you can try. I'm sure much of these you were going to look into anyway but it doesn't hurt to mention!

See if any Brawl techniques are in the game still such as DACUS (Dash Attack Canceled Up Smash), Glide Tossing, RAR (Reverse Aerial Rush, the tech you use to turn yourself around as you're going into the air), and etc.

See if you can air dodge more than once in the air. Also test out how long air dodge invincibility lasts and how punishable they are vs Brawl.

Also compare spot dodges, see how long they are invincible and if you can spam them as much as you can in Brawl.

Test out shield drop lag (if there's any at all) as well as if there's any shieldstun (Brawl didn't have any shieldstun which made shieldgrabs super powerful at the beginning of the metagame).

Obviously see if dashdancing exists and is useful again or not (in Brawl it existed but the window was ridiculously small and tripping effectively made it impossible to do so it was worthless). Also test if you can cancel your run with a crouch, you couldn't in Brawl (the only way to stop your run was with a shield).

I won't be able to go to any Best Buy event, unfortunately. Too long of a drive for something that will likely only last 5 minutes and have excruciatingly long lines.

So feel free to make these into more general questions bullet points for the OP if needed.

Also, you can watch the Invitational on Twitch's main channel too: www.twitch.tv/twitch (that channel may even have an open chat unlike the Nintendo one).

It's in FAQ

Maybe rename the second FAQ, or move the twitch info into something else.

Those are great! Thanks!

Awesome OP! There is a duplicate picture in the challengers section - the one with Ken and KDJ in it.

Will be going to the Best Buy event on June 11th so I'll try out some things if possible.

As I said back in the SmashGAF thread, I'll be heading to one of the Best Buy demos! June 11th to be exact.

I'll be mainly trying out my old Brawl main: Olimar! So I'll be able to provide some impressions from how he is thus far in the demo build and some other stuff I noticed.

I expect Pyrosphere to be one of the playable stages, so it's weird that we still haven't seen Ridley yet. I bet that will be Monday's pic.

Looks great, nice job on the OT! I'm especially excited for the tournament, but I'm also looking forward to finally getting my hands on the game at Best Buy, hopefully on the 11th.

[1st Round: 4-Players, 4-Stock, 5 Minutes, Items on High
2nd Round: 4-Players, 4-Stock, 5 Minutes, Items on Medium
3rd Round: 4-Players, 4-Stock, 5 Minutes, Items on Low
Grand Finale: 1-on-1 Finale on Battlefield, 8 Minutes, Items Off
It's Medium-Low-Low, not High-Medium-Low.

Had to subscribe. Smash is pretty much the only thing I'm looking forward to at this E3.

Great work on the OP, IntelliHeath.

Great work on the OP, IntelliHeath.

Thanks! I couldn't done that without Xane! He provided fantastic graphic works!

I should be able to contribute. I'll be at E3 as well as the tournament.

Biggest personal piece of information that I need to know is will DK have a mid air down special? Looks like it but we just don't know for sure.

Heath, will you be updating the questions list (I obviously can't edit the OP), or do you want me to try to keep doing it?

New questions so far:

Character Specific:

  • Will DK have a mid air down special?
  • Sonic's Homing Attack - can you still stall under the stage when someone is within his homing range?
  • Can Mega Man and Sonic air dodge after their Up Bs?
  • Is Bowser's Koopa Klaw still be influenced by the person who is grabbed when they have lower % than him and vice versa.

General Game Mechanics:

  • Can you cancel the tether latch by pressing down and then do another tether immediately after?
  • How many tethers you can you do (in Brawl, you could do a max of 3 tethers)?
  • how soon can you jump from the ledge (aka doing a ledgehop)?
  • Can you attack during ledgejumps (as in when you press a jump button while on the edge) and/or do anything else during ledgejumps?
  • Is rolling onto the stage is possible to be used as an edgehog (doubtful but it could have a little more occupancy than Brawl, you never know)?
  • Is edgehogging a legitimate strategy still?
  • Do grabs restore character's jumps? Test to see if grab releasing chaingrabs are still in the game (and if they are, this isn't good lol).
  • Is momentum from a running jump maintained?
  • Do attacks still have tripping properties? (try this with Zelda's Down Tilt or even Bowser's Forward Tilt). If so, is it random chance or guaranteed?
  • Are any Brawl techniques are in the game still such as DACUS (Dash Attack Canceled Up Smash), Glide Tossing, RAR (Reverse Aerial Rush, the tech you use to turn yourself around as you're going into the air), etc?
  • Can you air dodge more than once in the air. Also test out how long air dodge invincibility lasts and how punishable they are vs Brawl.

  • Test out shield drop lag (if there's any at all) as well as if there's any shieldstun (Brawl didn't have any shieldstun which made shieldgrabs super powerful at the beginning of the metagame).
  • Can you dash dance? Is it useful?
  • Can you cancel your run with a crouch?

Subscribed. I'm so excited to see all the footage and details.

I plan to play as Fox, Pit, and Greninja during Smash-fest, so I'll post my impressions of them and whatever other neat tidbits I come across.

Heath, will you be updating the questions list (I obviously can't edit the OP), or do you want me to try to keep doing it?

If you don't mind to working on gathering all questions and split them into categories for me then I will edit them in the OP when you are done. I'm not sure if I have time this weekend but it would depend on the weather.

Roger, i'll try my best.

PSA to everyone - if you want your questions added to the list and haven't been, please PM me.

Heath - please update the questions section to add a 'general mechanics' section. It's in there, but you mixed it in with 'Stage Based.' The last 3 questions belong to general mechanics.

I said it in the Smash thread but I'll say it again here. Let's find out everything we can about the soundtrack as possible. I will be at Best Buy on June 11th and I'll record some footage.

I am so jealous of those who get to play it. There are some things I'm personally on the lookout for, such as Fox's falling speed / reflector semi-spike / up-throw to up-air combos, Marth's juggling / ken-combo game and Sheik's forward-air.

Pit is looking pretty strong too, which is great considering he hit his ceiling pretty quickly in Brawl. Something I'm worried about is if his new forward-air is now a slow multi-hit move.

Great OP.
I'll take any bit of information I can get. And considering how many people are gonna be playing this thing, it seems there's gonna be a lot. Get hype!

Heath added background info on the players that I wrote up. Now you can know more about them (unfortunately some of them I don't actually *really* know a whole lot so... some have less info than others). Regardless, the info is there and fits.
