E3 2015: Horizon: Zero Dawn’s Incredible Balance of Action and RPG

The whole plot really depends on it, so if the answer is poor, that's it for the game's story :lol. I mean, when I saw the presentation, I didn't even pay much attention to it, because the world and the enemies looked so cool, but the time I stopped to think about, I was like wat. I really wish that the game will give detailed information on how every energy source just "ended", considering that we already know so many alternative ways to produce energy. Judging by the city they showed at the beginning, humanity probably had that knowledge already by the time it all went dark.

edit: @nib95 and Raven Prime: how come humans vanished if all those types of energy sources are suddenly viable? If humanity crumbled because the machines turned against them (which is the most used cliché in the book, aside from zombies), it would be understandable, but stating that the world went dark and humanity died because of it is quite weird.

All I can make out from the trailer is that "a darkness came", that could mean anything.

So people died because power vanished

but machines rules the world

so what powers the machines?

The machines took control of all forms of energy, not allowing people to have any. Machines continue scouring world looking for all sources of energy.

Do you have a life bar in this game?

Would be a bummer to see auto-healing. You can build so many RPG mechanics around health.

The more i read impressions of the more, the more pumped i become. The fact they've brought in so many peeps with a background in open world titles (and good ones at that) means GG mean serious business with this. W3 proved you don't need huge towers to climb to unlock parts of the world, or similar things of that ilk. And given GG's technical prowess i'm fully expecting them to blow the socks off anything open world related next year...and by quite a margin. So good, so very good so far.

But please make Aloy less talky.
I agree. Only thing that annoyed me in that trailer. Commenting on almost everything was a bit much. This is a minor gripe and could end up being a non-issue.

I'm more afraid how the story will turn out. After The Last of Us and Bioshock: Infinite no story has been able to grip me like they did. Even the story in Witcher 3 feels just ok after those.

Game looks amazing my one gripe with it, is what I worried about when there were rumors of the game. The story sounds dumb

I whole heartedly disagree. Part of the reason Horizon resonated with me so much is that the story is very reminiscent of one of my all time favorite short stories: "By The Waters of Babylon" by Stephen Vincent Benet. The idea that there is a people who live long after the fall of contemporary civilization where current technology (both basic and advanced) is mysterious and magical coupled with former cradles of civilization being regarded as taboo holy sites to be revered and not violated is basically straight out of the short story. But they added in this concept of perpetual autonomous machines which take the form of individual living organisms. Such a concept has a lot of promise both lore and story wise in this sort of universe. To make things even cooler some of them take the form of dinosaurs sooooo I am beyond sold. (I fucking love dinosaurs.) It certainly doesn't hurt that it is jaw droppingly gorgeous either. This is definitely (and admittedly surprisingly) my game of the show for Sony.

On a side note if any of you are science fiction fans and haven't read "By The Waters of Babylon" please do. It's relatively short and I promise you won't regret it.

On the subject of energy, the cave paintings at the start of the trailer could be depicting various forms of power.

Fire and wind. Maybe even a little nuclear symbol on the left.

Water and geothermal.

Detective GAF!

Actually there's no doubt more to these drawings than anything else in the demo. I think we should focus all out attention on these to see what we can garner.

she has a special bond with the mechanical beasts that she hunts. Guerrilla stressed that Aloy isn’t just a murderer – the way she connects with the raptor-esque Watcher when she performs a stealth kill shows the sort of relationship she has with the inhabitants of the crumbled world around her.
Watching Aloy set up a series of tripwires across two tall rocks, scaring a group of Grazers into running off, and seeing them set off the bombs and get completely blown apart
if you say so. lol

I love how much excitement this game has drummed up even amidst all the major announcements at this year's E3. A lot of new IPs lately have been met with skepticism, sometimes with good reason, but this seems like exactly the right kind of new to get people pumped.

Yeah. They hit so many amazing notes with the reveal.

Can't believe how well they brought that concept art to ingame. Plus they hit practically most of the theories being dreamed about in that Leaked Concept Art thread after we learned "open-world RPG, robodinos, red haired female main character". And then they went one further and the story sequence (which had a good narration setting up some of the world and awesome music) went straight into gameplay in those same insane graphics playing it live with that amazing looking gameplay.

I actually enjoyed Aloy talking throughout. It helps her personality become alive. I mean shit if I was up against these things I wouldn't be silent.

Incredibly hyped for this.

Speculation time:

With her name being Aloy which looks like Eloi (the race from the Time Machine) and the way the trailer showed the city fully modeled before the apocalypse perhaps this is a time travel story. It has also been mentioned that she has a deeper connection with these machines and is quite crafty. What if she was a scientist, created these first machines as a way to sustain the planet and use the resources. Stumbles on a way to make Time Travel (atleast to the future) possible and designs it and uses it but this event causes the blackout, her machines evolve over these 1000 years and she lands in the future with no or just fragments of her memory.

Ah well probably looking way to much into things but just so incredibly hyped for this.

guerrila should give us the option

uncharted mode:talkative
zelda mode: silent

done
everybody wins

This is fast becoming my most anticipated new IP.

I do hope they hold back on the audio prompts though, sound lake a lot of hand holding in that trailer. Hoping it's a tutorial, or (even better) optional.

Mother of god.... I would pay $1000 for this.

Shh, you fool, they'll hear you!

All I can make out from the trailer is that "a darkness came", that could mean anything.

Stargate style? Maybe we (humans) opened a gate and an alien-form invaded us, or (a la Pacific Rim) they sent these robot creatures to fight the residents of the planet.
They fight for them -> all are dead on the planet -> they invade the planet without any resistance.

"A darkness came."

Could be anything, a nuke, a disease, some kind of entity.

Probably to do with technology. Maybe the human race died out completely and the only survivors were biological AI that evolved into the "humans" we see today and somehow lost their awareness of that fact?

There's a lot of potential for some wonderfully ridiculous sci-fi here.

The only reason I haven't said anything about this game yet is because E3 was bursting at the seams with other announcements/updates that blew me away. That's just a testament to how ridiculously amazing E3 was this year, is all. Horizon is absolutely on my hori... uh, I won't do that to you.

But yes, best-looking new IP by far. The sci-fi fan in me perked up. The fan of strong female leads in me perked up. The wtf-mecha-dinosaurs fan in me perked up. To say that I perked up would be an apt descriptor.

looking forward to hunting at night.

Oh man, what if you can spot robotic creatures in the dark because of their glowing eyes and lights etc? That would be a cool and logical/immersive way to help the player find and see robots at night from a distance.

Would be a bummer to see auto-healing. You can build so many RPG mechanics around health.

I read somewhere that there was no auto healing and you need to gather herbs and stuff to heal a la MonHun. Good in my book.

Cutting Edge Open World Tech: Stunningly detailed forests, imposing mountains, and atmospheric ruins of a bygone civilization meld together in a landscape that is alive with changing weather systems and a full day/night cycle.

They didn't mention that before, but that sounds awesome.

Someone mentioned they're glad there's leveling on this. I haven't read anything mentioning that, but I hope it's not true. Leveling should be MonHun or Souls way. You get better by getting better equipment and by actually getting better at the game. Your character remains largely the same.

I agree option is ok who want silent but should not remove that talk which is nice for me and allows to better know the character and find what she is thinking contextually.

Umm read the OP.

Also this is not a Monster Hunter or Souls.
