EA Q2 FY16: Exceeds guidance, raises expectations again, #1 publisher for 2016 so far

Thanks a lot for the info. And just curious, and sorry if it seems a bit of a random question (you're not obliged to answer) but how are you so knowledgeable in this stuff?
Following businesses is a hobby for me, especially game companies. Get lots of info about games, and get to see interesting business strategies play out in an unstable industry.

Things get delayed... Titanfall isn't coming out in March again I don't see them shipping it during the middle of the year, given (despite mentions) it has not been officially announced yet and they won't launch both at the same time...

I think we will get both Battlefield and Titanfall next year. One in probably September and one in November

I'm happy to see EA doing well. They've really turned around as a company and are in my good books. Ubisoft, on the other hand....

I disagree actually since they don't need to. One of them will be in November '16, and then the other in March '17. They've already got their fall lineup in 2016 packed e.g. with Mass Effect Andromeda.

Thats true but will it really take mainline DICE that long to make a Battlefield game? The main team isn't working on Battlefront and didn't work on Hardline. I guess if it isnt going to hit until 2017 the franchise is getting some major shakeups

'EA Access base doubled over the last 2 quarters'

EA gaming quality is improving, EA Acess is great and they are on the right track!

give me titanfall 2 and BF5 !

Yup which makes me sad :/ Damn it!

So is it pretty much confirmed that it was an exclusivity deal with Microsoft.

No. We don't have EA Access on PS4 because Sony cockblocked EA for no reason. I originally thought it was because they were afraid of losing EA games on PS+ but Sony almost only puts indie games on PS+ now. At this point, I'm not sure why they won't allow it.

-EA’s live services for Battlefield™ Hardline and Battlefield 4™ continue to engage players with more than 6 million monthly average players across the two experiences.

Translation Battlefield Hardline was a tremendous failure, so we'll lump it's numbers together with the 2 year old BF4 to make it look like less of a disaster.

Based on my own stats I grabbed from how Battlefield multiplayer stats shifted it doesn't really matter for EA if you buy Hardline at launch and then after a month go back to Battlefield 4 as long as you play a Battlefield that is supported and allows you to spend money.

Granted I only took an intro accounting class, but what's with GAAP vs non-GAAP number? It's showing they had a net loss using GAAP, but net gain using non-GAAP.

Accruals/deferrals...sometimes something can hit from another time period or something you pay for (that doesn't have impact yet) has to be expended in the period it occurs or GAAP. For non-GAAP, you can expend it whenever you want. An expansion of staff or buying a building that has no income has to be reported when sale occurs for an example (GAAP).

Battlefield 4 was such a great game and had tons of post launch support, even after they fixed it, that it pretty much deservez whatever success it has. Hardline just couldn't keep me playing.

Maybe they don't want to offer the 10% discount across all EA games on the PSN store, but even that doesn't make much sense.

EA doing amazing stuff and Battlefront is only going to nuke even harder for them.

Pretty awesome seeing these good numbers from Sony, EA, etc. Console industry still thriving

The number are good but not great. Sales and net profit are down around 10% YOY for the last 6 months. This quarter YOY current gen went up, last gen went down, but also PC sales have gone down. Mobile was flat or maybe down 4%. Obviously Star Wars could turn things positive next quarter and the Halo and PS4 price cut could spur hardware sales which can help next gen grow for them more quickly. NFS is back too I guess.

Would this be a good time to buy EA stock or is the Battlefront rise already baked in?

I don't think the Battlefront rise is baked in. I believe it will surpass 13 million. Also, Mass Effect: Andromeda has yet to be released, then there is multiplat Titanfall which should sell well, and there is the next Battlefield, which will be the first one that is not cross gen. And that isn't even counting the unannounced Star Wars game with Amy Hennig, and the new open world game being developed with Jade Raymond. Oh and Need for Speed this year and Garden Warfare 2 next year (which I think will sell better than the first due to word of mouth and the free giveaway last PSX). In my opinion, things are looking very up from here on out. I would invest if I were an investor. I just can't see any reason for stock to go down.

So, PC brought EA $184 million, whereas both PS4 & XB1 were responsible for $332 million (GAAP results) in Q2 2016.
Pretty neat, I guess.

195million, up 27% YoY for freemium games

FIFA Online 3 from China is "meeting expectations", but no numbers given (was actually kind of curious about this)

New titles in quarter are seeing around 20% for digital sales, except for FIFA which was a bit lower than that (edit: This comment may have JUST been about FIFA)

Damn, I want to see more numbers on Gaming Companies ventures in China. Like how much % it comprise in their PC section and whether it's doing like double digit growth.

But this second one doesn't seem like it was greenlid with the intention of being a mega financial homerun in the first place.

Right, it most likely exists to keep DICE happy and not feeling like they're a Battlefield factory.

Works for me.

EA mentioned last quarter that it expects FIFA Online 3 to generate between $10-15 million per quarter. So, it's around this range this quarter if its meeting expectations. If that's the case, Online 3 revenue makes up about 8% of this quarter's PC sales.
