EA Shutting Down Anthem Servers on January 12, 2026 - No Longer Playable Afterward

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Hi everyone,

We have an important update to share regarding Anthem. After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026. This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days. As of today, you can no longer purchase in-game premium currency, but you can still use your remaining balance until the servers go offline.

We deeply appreciate your dedication, passion and support over the years and we'd like to thank you for that.

Q: Why can't I play Anthem in offline mode?

A: Anthem was designed to be an online-only title so once the servers go offline, the game will no longer be playable.

frankly there's no good reason for them to not patch in an offline mode, what does it really need online for at this point anyway?

Yeah, the game is still a looker. The flight mechanics are also fun.

Losing it permanently would be a shame.

Genuinely surprised they let it linger this long.

Yeah there is. It would be a monumental waste of money to pay developers to patch the game to support single player when the game has been dead for years and regularly was on sale for under $5. They might as well take a pile of money and burn it, it would give them the same return on investment.

not a good reason from a consumer perspective, and not like they haven't had YEARS to plan for this, and this sorta thing is really starting to piss people off

hopefully Stop Killing Games eventually gets the EU to pass a law that makes it so companies can't pull this BS

WTF I didn't know it was still alive.

What a pile of shit, one of my great gaming disappointments.

Remember when they were going to fix/reboot it as Anthem 2.0, but they canceled it because so many important people left the company?

Consumers knew they were buying an always online game that would eventually be shut down one day. BioWare and EA were very upfront about what Anthem was.

Consumers don't get to complain now when the eventuality they knew existed comes to pass.

They could have used the surprisingly good flight mechanics to make something fun and well...good.

Instead we got Anthem.
I think EA Motive are still working on that Iron Man game. So if they aren't completely retarded, they hopefully recycled that part of Anthem (if they use Frostbite as their engine)

Out of curiosity: Can't they allow people to host private servers?
I guess...
Demon's Souls ps3 can still be played online with a private server, all you need to do is use a specific dns, so I guess the same could be done for Anthem, but I doubt anyone would go through the trouble of doing it.

So while the proposal to the EU commission will probably go through, anything resulting from it will not be retroactive. EA/BioWare, you can bury this.

This game got bad reviews and all, but last time I saw an article years ago it actually sold 5M copies at the time. By now with some bargain binning maybe it hit 6M.

Not a total disaster at all in terms of new IP sales. Too bad the game got grilled so chances of a sequel would be dead in the water.

But with so many sales it at least sparked gamer interest. So it shows the concept was actually pretty good. Just bad execution.

This is why charging full price for live service games is a waste. If devs are charging up front and it's not free to play best believe they should be putting an offline mode in.

do you work for ea??????????????????????????????????????

I'm genuinely surprised that it's still live. That's amusing, I guess.

It's kind of hard to frame this as an example of why always online games or games without some sort of private server support are stupid... I mean, the game's dead, so that sucks. But it's also shit, so... who cares? As a principle, I'm not a fan.

Funny thing is you can play through the whole campaign missions single player, so really there is no reason why they couldnt patch the game so you can play the campaign offline.

Obviously they dont want to spend the small amount of time and money it wold take to make that patch.

Fuck EA.
