can't seem to find it on the EU store (switzerland)

I'm conflicted here. On the one hand, I don't like the game*, but on the other hand, I liked Mother 3 and I want to support the series in NA. I'll probably just pick it up whenever I get a Wii U later this year just to help the cause.

*I liked the music, atmosphere, characters, story, etc., just not the actual gameplay. I struggled to get through the game with its restrictive inventory system and poor balancing (dat early game grind, dat late game power leveling of Ness when he's already your best character, dat useless Jeff, dat etc. I'm sure there's more, but I played the game early this year and have forgotten most of my impressions).

What the fuck does that have do with the matter at hand? That's SE acting like the asshole they are. This is Nintendo being the asshole they are.

My point is that it's not just Nintendo that does this, it's any known game they can "take advantage of" with a higher price, companies do. It's a perfectly good (if understandably irksome) loophole in the supply and demand chain dictating prices ;)

Today? I had no idea. I thought this was going to be a December release or something hah

Will buy when I have a Wii U. Don't think the price is problematic at all considering the game is finally being re-released. I'm just glad it's here

Well, I always assumed it would be 8 bucks. I mean, Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, and FF 2 and FF3 were all 8 bucks on the VC.

There's got to be a reason they're charging two extra dollars besides 'because they can'. Probably music royalties or something.

Assuming this does hit today, would this not be the second time an apparent no-VC week on Wii U has turned into a surprise release? First was during E3 with the Mega Man release splurge, IIRC...

EarthBound is one of the best games ever made. I am glad to have played it, because it has made life better by doing so.

This is one of those very dangerous quotes people make to hype up this game (unless you're being sarcastic, damnable internets). I think people who've played a game for ages and have set it in a pedestal sometimes forget that when you set the bar too high for new comers, you leave them gravely disappointed.

That and Earthbound really is barely one of the SNES better RPGs, let alone one of the best games ever made.

Tons of people in this thread will flame you for this, but I totally agree. The hype for an emulated Earthbound is dumb.

A lot of people haven't played Earthbound before, you know. Why is it dumb to be hyped for the chance to play a celebrated game for the first time at a non-exorbitant price?

I kindly disagree. Earthbound is an extremely innovative game that definitely left the mark. You may disagree with it being one of the best games ever made, but he set the bar just where it should be. It's a great game, with many unrepeated amazing design lessons. Just like my avatar, yeah.

10 bucks for a SNES game, no matter how classic, with no extra localization or anything like that is a robbery.

only if

1) you determine how much you're willing spend on a game based entirely on how much effort you perceive to be put into it (instead of, you know, how much pleasure you'd get from it)

or

2) you don't like the game in question

I don't care about all of that, I'm merely just relating my experience of playing EarthBound for the first time. Let them be disappointed, their loss.

Of course not everyone is going to have a religious experience playing the game, but I did.

I played it for the first time like three years ago.

One of my favorite games of all time, and a narrative so finely crafted that it's second only to Mother 3. No nostalgia here.

Edit: Your point below is fair.

Earthbound is perhaps one of the most overhyped games I have ever seen. It's not bad. No, not at all. It's quite good. But people herald it as some amazing RPG that just blows you away. It's really not. It has an amazing soundtrack, one of the best ever. The graphics are stylish and the setting is great. But the gameplay is a mediocre turn-based system with very little depth, which just doesn't hold up today. I played it on my SNES like two years ago and couldn't get too far because the battles were boring.

Of course, this is my opinion.

Anytime anyone claims a niche game a "best game ever" I have to give a second to pause on that and remind myself what the definition of "niche" is, and why something is considered "niche" to begin with.

Earthbound is a great game, but I again think people shouldn't take their 15 years of hype, compress it down to 2 sentences, then toss that at someone who's never played said game before. You're only setting them up for an experience they won't ever have.

Sure, the battle system is just "Dragon Quest garbage" (I HATE DQ), but I thought they at least put enough interesting spins on it (rolling HP meters, unique, charming enemies, enemies on world map, battles instantly over if over-leveled) to make it totally enjoyable for me, despite my previously stated hatred of Dragon Quest.

I did enjoy the rolling HP meter. I thought that was pretty nifty.
