SPOILER TIME

SPOILERS ALL UP IN THIS FULL METAL HARLOT

The ending was the only thing that bugged me a bit about the movie, does Cruise now have all the powers from the Hivemind and can set back time like he wants?
Actually, I've been thinking about the ending and wondering if that means the Mimics are in control again.

Let me explain:

1. The scientist that helps them in finding the Omega Mimic mentions that there are almost assuredly other Mimics roaming around the universe.
2. Mimics can control time and have been known to trick humans into thinking they've been winning battles or making advances in winning the war.
3. When an Alpha is killed, the Omega Mimic resets the day (this is mentioned when they're about to attempt the final run on the Omega Mimic - Cage tells the team to "take one for the team" since killing an Alpha will fuck everything).
4. There is a connection between the Omega Mimic and Alpha Mimic which is what gives whoever kills an Alpha the "reset powers". This may be me making a jump in logic but I assume the powers come from the Omega Mimic (see 2 & 3).

So! As mentioned I started thinking about the final sequence and what it means that Cage got the powers right after killing the Omega Mimic, just to make sure we had a happy ending; then I wondered if it was a not-so-happy ending after all.

What do you guys think? Omega Earth Mimic got killed for sure, but then when the Alpha Mimic dies as well it triggers a day reset from another Omega Mimic (somewhere else in the galaxy) and since they've learned that humans are more than willing to die and die again in battle against the Mimics, they change their plans and make humans believe that Mimics are defeated instead.

Am I reading too much into this? Speaking of reading, I haven't read "All you need is Kill", so if this is actually the ending and it's supposed to be super-obvious then just ignore my wall of text. :P

I wouldn't be surprised if there is an alternate ending somewhere that was either darker or more ambiguous.

He blew up the Omega, but got flooded with it's time juices. Pushing them both back in time, but the Omega still blew up killing all the Mimics.

Hence Cruise got dumped back in time with no mimics. A bit of a happy happy ending.

They only theorised that there could be more Mimics around. If there are I doubt they'll be connected.

I think the ending doesn't make sense. When you die and load to the previous save point, why would the boss dead in that save file?
Bad game design.

The ending doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If it made sense, it would mean that all the events happened a day earlier. Since when Cage woke up, he woke up at the START of the day again. While the mimics got defeated.

What a clusterfuck. All that just so that everyone can be alive again.

Cruise woke up at the start of the alien time loop, not his. He was looping in their loop. That's why they could do stuff and prepare even before he deployed. So when he killed the Omega at the end, he went to the beginning of their loop.

OHHHH SHIT A SPOILER THREAD
IT'S PARTY TIME

So I saw this a couple weeks ago and loved it, especially the stuff related to the time loops.

Tom Cruise being a coward is goddamn hilarious to me. I straight up expected him to be bitchmade until the very end, that's how shook he was

Rita was awesome and I love that they kept the Full Metal Bitch nickname, but towards the end of the movie she didn't really do too much. Her main arc ended with that helicopter deal.

Paxton being a goober supreme was pretty funny, as was him (& the General) never being able to be convinced of Cage's story whatsoever, no matter how he tried.

My favorite time loop was probably the one where Cage dies trying to roll under the truck, Paxton's reaction makes that shit.

The credits could not have chosen a worse freaking song.

tldr; Reset

And yeah, like I said in the other threads, beyond the concept and some of the characters (Cruise, Blunt, Paxton's), everything else is basically completely different.

The truck death scene is awesome. His scream is hilarious.

I don't quite get the ending too even after the explanations on the posts above.

the thing that really bugged me wasn't any sort of inconsistency with the time travel or the ending, but that the enemies seemed to be able to fire projectiles by some means that aren't ever shown in the film, that doesn't quite make sense given that they appear to be octopus monsters that don't use weapons. in the initial beach storming scene the dropships are clearly being shot down by something, but as far as i could see they never showed what was doing the shooting.

i sort of assumed that a lot of things must just be explained in the book but they had to cut it for the film, so hearing that it doesnt follow the book closely makes some of the scenes seem oddly under-developed. like the whole learning her middle name thing, and then it never came up in the rest of the film.

i thought it was pretty great up until the bit after they found the initial omega was a fake. after that it seemed to be a bit rushed and once they took out the mechanic of him dying it just became a slightly plain action film. the final attack on the omega felt especially rushed and bland.

Why can't we do this in the OT, movie's been out a while now...

Anyway I really hope there's an alternate ending director's cut in the home release. I liked the happy ending well enough, but that movie was really good at having an edge right under the surface, would love to see them double down on it.
