Elden Ring initially had a bestiary

New files have been unearthed in Elden Ring which allude to the game once having a bestiary.

The files in questions were found by Twitter user JesterPatches, who wrote:

Looking through [Elden Ring's] files I came across a few icons making me believe that a bestiary was planned at some point.

The user continues:

There are 128 icons showing different NPCs. Each NPC shown has two icons, one greyed out and another one filled in, so it could be not found and found.

The brazilian-pt translation already received major cutbacks from item description. I imagine what they would do by having to translate a full bestiary.

Things like "The flaming sword of Aesir was given by the king by his brother..." were translated to "The flaming sword is a sword in flames" kind of thing. Really lazy stuff.

And item description in a FROM game is like 90% of the story

A few times through the game I thought of how cool it would be to have a bestiary. I did never use any kind of summon, but I still was happy when finding one since that mean I got to read some lore about the monstie, so having all that expanded and more accesible would have been great.

Dunno why they decided to remove it.

Funny enough I thought the same a day or two ago =)

Would be cool if they could patch it in

Its be cool if it worked within the game. Maybe like Castlevania where the more you kill a monster the more information you get.

On the one hand that would have been cool, on the other stuff like that always gives me OCD to complete them, and I have enough work with this game anyway.

Would be nice to have a detail bestiary.
Drops, drop rate, HP, attack dmg the works.

But this info is locked until you defeat that creature.

Having a bestiary might impose a sense of objectives on the player, like a quest log. Elden ring's strength is the free-form nature of the game.

This definetly reads like out of money and out of time.
It would be super cool if they manage to patch the game with all the content left on the cutting board, maybe they can do it now after selling that much, it's not just From's call tho, but Namco's.

I could see that or they didn't like the transparency

It could be done to fit the game though.

Model viewers in particular would be awesome in FromSoft games. So many amazing creature/enemy designs that you don't really get to appreciate because they move so fast and you're focused on not dying.

Shame, i really enjoy bestiaries. Plus there isn't much lore to some enemies in from games. I want to know about the sleep paralysis demons in caelid.

I think it would've been pointless, since all enemies can be beaten by beating them with sticks, the only info they could give his the lore of each creature, but that would also be lacking, as there is no concrete explanation for the existence of many enemies monstrous form other than the shattering of the ring messed everything up, which had just recently happened.

So not much to go on for a bestiary.
