Elder Scrolls fans will have to wait, Bethesda has no current plans for ES5

Wow.. worst idea ive in the last month or so. There are too many story elements in Star Wars for Bethesda to pull off correctly.. thats kind of a sad thought. What i think would work great from Bethesda is a cyberpunk rpg. Open world, hacking minigames, cyberspace worlds, scores of people devoid of any emotion, a handful of interesting characters like Mr. Johnsons.. too bad they dont have the Shadowrun license.

Hah!

Would be a good concept, though.

Bethesda already has enough problems with bugs and balancing in their single player RPGs. I would be certain to avoid any MMORPG endeavor from them unless it came out and received universal praise or something.

Their games already do receive universal praise, and are still buggy on day one.

Wait a second... do you guys think ESO would be a console MMO or a PC exclusive? Because if it's not a console game, won't Bethesda be throwing away a sizable chunk of their fan base?

TES has always undergone big graphical improvements between mainline sequels. Since we're still on the same generation of console hardware as when TES IV was released, it is not surprising a TES V is not in development, at least until there's better hardware for it to move on to.

TES III was on last generation hardware, IV this gen, and V will not be out until we see the next gen I believe. And since everyone seems to be quite content with this generation, that probably won't be for a while.

So what are Bethesda making? Fallout New Vegas is being handled by Obsidian and probably coming out 2010. Elderscrolls V is probably next generation. What does that leave for their 2011 game?

Too bad, would love a new open world medevil/fantasy game

Jeesh, such a good sub-genre and oblviion sold liek crazy...why don't other companuies make something similar? Outside Oblvion this gen there's Two Worlds, which is garbage, and nothing else.

From the release of Arena in 1994 until now, there hasnt really been an Elder Scrolls "clone" which i find kind of odd. The whole genre seems ripe for the taking. Especially if its something other than fantasy.

Man, that really sucks. So at best the next ES is like 3 years away? :\

I call bullshit. And they better not be making a fucking MMO.

It's expensive and hard to execute. Even bethesda themselves can't make a slick open-world game. I mean... look at Two Worlds. =/

Actually, the ES games always seemed like more like MMOs than a true SP wRPG to me anyway. At least with other people, you'd have some interactivity with the otherwise static and 1 dimensional world.

So no ES5
No more fallout dlc
Fallout vegas is 3rd part developed

Wtf are they working on?

I was thinking about this. Other than the possibility that Todd's main team is working on the MMO, the only thing I can think of is maybe a brand new IP.

Steampunk game by the main TES/FO team?

Why not? Arcanum would be great in a FPS style RPG. In fact Arcanum 2 was suppose to be a FPRPG using the Source engine.
i dont want to get into a huge argument here. i dont think Bethesdas strengths play well to games like Fallout or Arcanum. i would much prefer Bethesda make a new ip thats built from the ground up around what they do best than shoehorning their gameplay into other franchises.

If they made it, it would't be aracnum anymore, just like when they made fallout 3, it wasn't a true fallout game.

Two Worlds was an epic masterpiece.

mightttttttt be sarcastic, but i thought Two Worlds was enjoyable and i'm pretty harsh on games. Maybe it was the low expectations and the fact that Oblivion's main quest was horrible ( beyond horrible, more like disgraceful), but i had some fun with the game.

I tried to play Two Worlds, but it was impossible. I can't play a game like that with sub 20 frames per second. No way.

Thank goodness Bethesda is around. I love large Western console RPGs, and if it weren't for Bethesda and Bioware, I'd have to break down and do the unthinkable. Buy a gaming PC.

If elder scrolls 5 ever gets made, it'll definately be my fav game of all time.
As long as its not an MMO.

If they're going to give the franchise the MMO treatment, then I hope they will at least try to hit the same level if interactivity and quality questing. Though I don't see how they could pull that off in a world with thousands of wrenches in the quest machine instead of just one.

I have zero interest in MMOs. When TES5 arrives, I want it to be a single player experience like the rest of the series, and I want Bethesda to have taken their time to polish it very carefully. Most of all it needs a balanced leveling system, non-leveled items and enemies, and a minimum of glitches.

Personally, I'd love to visit Morrowind again.

Oh, bullshit.

And Nintendo has no plans for another Mario game, S-E has no plans for another Final Fantasy game and MS has no plans for another Halo game. There are always plans.
Nintendo has already announced Super Mario Galaxy 2, and New Super Mario Bros. 2, SE has FF13, 13Versus and 14, MS has Halo ODST, Halo Reach etc. :P

Exactly, we're just hoping Bethesda isn't making Elder Scrolls MMO.

I love the Elder Scrolls series, but I'd never touch a MMO, even if it's Elder Scrolls MMO. Also I'm kinda disappointed to hear this, I was looking forward to ES5 using the Rage engine :/

Wasn't it back in April that Bethesda said they had 'no current plans' for Fallout DLC for the PS3? Obviously they did have plans, but found it prescient to deny them at that time.

My guess is a new ES in late 2010/mid 2011.

I'm sure they aren't saying anything because they don't want to sap attention from Fall Out New Vegas (Does that come out this year?).

I'm sure once New Vegas is out they'll announce something... hopefully.

Guys, this isn't anything new. They always deny everything until they're announced. Even small things like DLC or the Fallout construction set were denied like this until they announced them.

Oblivion was announced a few months before its planned release, and up until that point they denied its existence.

Second, they're not doing the MMO, Zenimax' online studio is.

TES V: Skyrim is still coming. Relax.

i have to say that The Elder Scrolls MMO has been providing some serious laughs. The trolling by Ausir on the TES forum is fantastic :lol

Of course it is, which is why the series so much needed updating to the Fallout 3 format (as so many Bethesda fans have glaringly pointed out), exactly like The Elder Scrolls needs an update to the MMORPG format to go with the times. Single player cRPGs? It's not 1994 anymore.

QUOTE
Ausir, you either obviously don't understand the whole point of the popularity of TES for so many people on here

So? For many people the point of popularity is not the same, and the setting and lore is what's important, as well as the exploration, freeform quests and other things I mentioned. And a TES MMO will surely appeal to a new fanbase, just like Fallout 3 does not have what was the point of popularity for much of the old fanbase, but still appeals to a whole new group of fans, as well as these fans for whom the appeal was mainly the post-apocalyptic setting. A lot of people I know would love to play TES Online.

QUOTE
Any TES MMO would be made by ZeniMax Online, not Bethesda Game Studios.

Exactly - a new developer taking the franchise into a new direction.

QUOTE
And a lot of people I know would spew at the thought of a TES MMO.

Just like a lot of people I know would spew at the thought of Fallout being a real-time FPP game. But it did happen, and guess what? Turned out to be quite popular.

QUOTE
I could get Civilisation and turn it into an Age of Empires clone

You mean turn it from a turn-based game into a real time one, based largely on the player's reflexes? Funny you say that, since that's what Bethesda did with Fallout 3.

QUOTE
I'd also alienate the hell out of the old fanbase and destroy the basic principles that were part of the game series. "Appealing to a new fanbase" is not always a good thing.

It certainly was a good thing commercially for Fallout 3, despite alienating much of the old fanbase and abandoning the basic principles that were part of the game series.
:lol :lol

Freakin' s'wit better get his people working on another Elder Scrolls, I love the series but I've played Morrowind and Oblivion to death. I wouldn't expect another one until next gen, though.

Gosh I really liked Oblivion, despite it's numerous flaws. Fallout 3 didn't do much for me. And I hate MMOs.

This news depresses me. :(

Oh I was serious. I got 900/1000 achievement points in it. That's right. I played it on 360.

I am glad because Oblivion sucks
It's clear that some juniors know the way GAF works, while others are used to gamefaqs and have no idea how to act.

I would love a scenario based primarily in a distinct landscape (like a huge desert or during a mini ice age). In my mind, I'm thinking a sort of Kingdom of Heaven look (visually) :D

They're keeping their cards close to their chest. No new TES, or Fallout. What could they be working on...hopefully nothing too outlandish - I like Bethesda for their WRPG open quest style, but I think they'd fail if they tried something weird like a full FPS.
