Search for WMD in Iraq ended

The hunt for biological, chemical and nuclear weapons in Iraq has come to an end nearly two years after President Bush ordered U.S. troops to disarm Saddam Hussein. The top CIA weapons hunter is home, and analysts are back at Langley.

[...]

Four months after Charles A. Duelfer, who led the weapons hunt in 2004, submitted an interim report to Congress that contradicted nearly every prewar assertion about Iraq made by top Bush administration officials, a senior intelligence official said the findings will stand as the ISG's final conclusions and will be published this spring.

President Bush, Vice President Cheney and other top administration officials asserted before the U.S. invasion in March 2003 that Iraq was reconstituting its nuclear weapons program, had chemical and biological weapons, and maintained links to al Qaeda affiliates to whom it might give such weapons to use against the United States.

Thank God for Bush and the people who voted for him (again).

We're now ready for formal apologies from political cartoonists, pundits and GA OT members who mocked the UN weapons inspectors for not being able to find these non-existent WMDs.

Hahahahaha, seriously. I was actually thinking about how they were right all along, and yet got so much shit.

The biggest joke to me, and I mean joke in the way the Comedian from Watchmen would consider it a joke, is that the certainty of Iraq having WMD's was driven home time and time again by Dubya as the only reason we needed to pre-emptively invade Iraq. It was the entire basis for this shithole we now find ourselves in.
Yet, when it was clear that the media (and the public, more or less) realized that these claims were total shams, the government "changed course" (Noam Chomsky speaks about this tactic at length) to the oh-so-righteous cause of "liberation" and bringing "democracy" to the poor denizens living under Saddam's iron heel.

And the WMD's?
"That's yesterday's news. Sure, that was important, but now we're doing this."

The recurring joke behind everything: We can't do shit about any of it.

I'll admit I'm somewhat in shock about this (as well as eating crow). I mean, how could our administration tell us a bold-faced lie, and have so little people care about it? I guess since he wasn't "under oath" it's ok? I'm a little scared about the direction this country is going.

Don't you get it? The government does this ALL THE TIME. This is just the most recent display. Ever hear of the Iran/Contra scandals? That shitstorm, for as bad as it was, was never even rightly investigated and/or cared about. What do 99% of people remember from that? Oliver North. As if that idiot did all that covert shit on his own. What a fucking joke. Then you had old Ronnie essentially playing the Alzheimers card about a decade early, saying w/ a straight face that he just couldn't remember a damn thing about what was said or authorized or whatever. The craziest part is that I actually believe him---Reagan was a big PR stunt. No way anyone involves him in anything as messy as that.

Wow, tin-foil hat here we come. First off, I was referring to telling a bold-faced lie to get us involved in a pre-emptive war (i.e. telling us lies to go to war over a threat that didn't exist). That has never happened in the history of the US. In case you're unaware, American troops are fighting and dying over a giant lie. This isn't Iran / Contra. this isn't Whitewater, or the president getting a BJ in the Oval Office. I understand the government doing underhanded shit it feels it needs to do to play the International politicing game it has to - I don't understand how they can lie to the public about reasons for going to war and get off without repurcussions. Once again - this has never happened before. The closest I can think of is the Spanish-American war, but that was another era entirely. Not even comparable to this.

Basically, I believed what the top officials are saying because I believe going to war is more or less the last resort. I saw Hussein's history of trying to get around weapon's inspectors, and I saw the supposedly "top-secret" evidence that guys like Colin Powell (who I respected at the time) showing to the UN. So I believed them. But now it turns out it was not only shaky evidence, but many top officials believed the information to be false (the attempt to buy Uranium - how could they even use that as evidence?). I don't know if I can ever trust the administration again, and it's only reinforced in my mind that people no longer give a shit about civic duty - it's become a fanboy war on a politic level.

Try "the evils of communism." Do you have an idea the number of dictators we've propped up in southeast Asia and South America and how many people have died as a result?

Well, you're right, this isn't Iran/Contra, because at least back then we had the sense to hire and train mercenaries to do our dirty work. Where exactly does the tin foil hat come in? I was just saying that the government lies all the time and other people get killed as a result, the difference here is that now we're dying along with everyone else. *Shrug*

Tin-foil hat comes in because you say the government does this "all the time". Iran/Contra was a series of lies to cover up their involvement, this was a straight-faced lie to the public to start a war. I think there's a huge difference there, and equating the two with the conclusion that the government does this "all the time" is something that the tin-foil hat crowd does.

Iran/Contra wasn't just a "series of lies". That's what you do when you don't want your girl to know you're going out drinking. And I still don't see the difference between lying to someones face or behind their back. Actually, in a way, the former is actually easier.

You're being sarcastic obviously, but the chances of Mr.Bush not getting any whoring action while president is unlikely. Like sports stars, politicians use their status to put women into bed. Washington is FULL of call girls.

I thought I was, until I saw my little post turned into a Republican straw man. ;p

Anyone else remember the funny that was the run up to impeachment for Bill Clinton? The Repugs newly selected House Speaker was zero'd in by Hustler Magazine and found out to be having extra-martial affairs.

Paraphrasing...

"To be sure, I've had extra-martial affairs, but I've been the victim of visious media wanting to have headlines(I GUESS CLINTON IS THE EXCEPTION, THEN?)..."

His speech in the senate was pure political...

"I'm resigning my post effective Jan 20, and so should the President."

If you really do want to learn more about this, you can read All the President's Spin. It tells how he constantly gets away with lying directly to the public. It might piss you off though. :p

Yup, look at how even though it's on the front page of many newspapers and news sites it's only a small headline.

Of course I believed Bush. I was also an exclusive owner of Nintendo products. Shortly thereafter, I purchased an XBOX and became a green-loving, tree-hugging, LIBRUL.

In short, I blame Nintendo for keeping me in a cage.

Well, I'm not understanding your statement, Bionic. At first, I believed Bush, and thought we should invade Iraq based on the "evidence" he and his staff presented the country. Soon, though, I changed tunes and was indeed mocked for stating that WMD's were not there and that no amount of searching would ever uncover some massive stash of the elusive MUSHROOM CLOUDS.

It'll happen eventually though. In the future an incident be it a cover up or a breach of civil rights will push the usa over the edge. it will have to be big though. Then something will happen, who knows what.

Ohh ps are the 500 people (I'd say at least half are innocence) in guantamo bay ever mentioned in the press in the usa any more?

I was just wondering if you were one of the few who openly questioned whether or not the president was telling the truth from the beginning. I assumed you were considering your open hate of the president these days. I took some shit at the law school myself for saying that the whole war was a crock of shit. Oh well, it feels good to be right in the end.

And don't blame the president outsmarting you on your love for Nintendo products. :D

You wanna find the WMD's, look in Iran and neighboring countries. We only hesitated getting in there by about 4 months. It's not like they didn't have time to ship them out of country to make our government look foolish. What did Sadaam gas the Kurds with? Not mustard gas, was it? Oh no .. maybe actual mustard huh? Give me a break.

You haven't. Those that have include Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin etc.

Still as Hitler believed (although I don't think it was his idea) if you tell a big lie many many times people just accept it as truth.
