Elex |OT| Gothic 5: Risen From Jank

Put in an hour and a half. I'm a major PB fan, so of course I'm already in love with it. My single biggest gripe so far: after saving your game, you can't hit B to back all the way out to resume playing hah.

So you have to close a few menus before you can resume? I believe their previous games had this too. These kind of games should have something like a qicksave or at least not too much of a hassle.

It does have auto save. There's an option in gameplay settings. With auto save set to 3 minute intervals as default

Couldn't contain myself and played for a while. Controls feel really good (for a PB game) and the game looks fantastic. Protagonist has a hilariously deep voice.

Played almost three hours and I'm loving it so far. It really feels like a proper sequel to Risen 1.

I think I've already somehow glitched a sidequest though.

Somebody told me to find and kill Bigby. I find him, but he's already dead. Maybe he got killed by a beast, or something. Anyway, I go back to that somebody, and he doesn't say anything.

Now I've got this unfinished quest just sitting here.

There is a quicksave with pad
just press menu and then Y. then again menu and you are back in the game. quick and easy.

I play with mouse and keyboard though and really like the controls
biggest surprise for me is that I think it really feels a lot more like Gothic and less like Risen 3. I only fought single enemies so far, though. The problems start with groups of enemies as far as I read.

I also build my character differently. In the past I used to just put everything into int from the start (or even save points until I could cast magic) which made me a wimp for the first 10 hours and then immediately become a god.
I decided to make the start a bit easier for me and distribute points easily, progression is noticeable imo. Quests and immersion are A+, though, as expected. the game and the world just feel good. The first town is also a lot bigger than I expected.

Love that Berserkers get pissy even if you just open up your menu/inventory (its accessed by wrist based tech) around them. Heh.

does this have any class system?
No. You choose the skills/stats you want to level up and learn as you go. You form your playstyle from that.

It is worth noting that the factions each have their own unique set of skills you can acquire and better specialize in if you join them. Berserkers can use magic, Clerics have psi powers and mind control, Outlaws can get super high.

Just started getting into the Berserker town. Doing a simple fetch quest and I found a sweet weapon while exploring around that area. I probably won't be able to wield it until I level up 10 more times or so though.

I got my copy! Woohoo! My local store were all preorders, so I had to drive 20 m, but it was worth it. Woohoo, jank time!

A levelup awards you with 10 attribute points and 1 Learning point.
attribute points can be spent immediately and raise attributes (strength, constitution, intelligence etc.)

Learning points need to be spent at certain trainer NPCs and they will teach you perks. There is a huge variety of perks, things like bartering, stealing, lockpicking, weapon damage, up to powerful spells. These perks also have attribute prerequisites so for instance spells require a lot of intelligence while weapons need strength and dexterity, lockpicking requires a certain amount of cunning etc. so you need to plan your character carefully.

You have your typical RPG attributes like Strength (melee strength), Consitution (health), Dexterity (ranged attack), Cunning (rogue related stuff), Intelligence (magic and psychic) etc.

The attributes affect and are requirements to get better at/invest in the various skills at trainers with learning points such as melee weapons, ranged weapons, heavy weapons (which I'm assuming are the rocket launchers, flamethrowers and miniguns), thief techniques (stealing, lockpicking and pickpocketing), crafting and grenades. Stuff like Magic has their spot under the faction trees so I'm assuming you have to join specific groups if you really want to dig into that, I might be mistaken. Still early on.

Tip: Read through all the dialog that is offered, a few times quests were available at the last speaking option. You will miss it if you leave any dialog unchecked.

Really liking what I've played so far :) I don't think I'll bother actually joining the Berserkers though, they seem kinda...dull. Outlaws sound like they could be a blast plus I want to use my shotgun damnit.

This is pretty good so far! Definitely feels more in line with Risen and Gothic 2. We'll see how it holds up in the long run but first impressions are good (if you're a PB fan, anyway).

Amusing how it runs better on my PC than Gothic 3 does to this day. ^_^

One weird thing I've noticed is a charisma stat (like Charisma 4) at a certain level is required to access certain dialog options but I see no indication of what my charisma is anywhere in the stats menus.

I am not sure but I think this is the sum of points you have spent in charisma perks

I'm just gonna say it.. The dev company needs to send the op a free copy.. First OT that actually sold me the game. I'm gonna pick this up tonight.

Is anyone playing this on PC with a wireless xbox one controller ? Do you have the issue of it showing keyboard bindings instead of controller prompts at all ? Not tried my 360 pad or plugged in the wireless pad via cable yet, I'm wondering if it's the wireless causing the issue.

EDIT - Nevermind, glitch in the matrix, seems to be working fine now :)

Wow so many good reactions! Does the game really feel more like G2 and R1? How about the combat? I'd be so happy if this is true and it doesn't feel like R2 and 3.

I am still playing The Technomancer but to be honest I just want this to end because the backtracking is really really ruining it now. This is something I just know Elex won't be suffering from. Lack of variety when it comes to locations and fun quests. Technomancer is starting to drag now. I mostly got Elex on my mind now. I might buy it before One X release after all, haha.

Oh there can be a shit ton of backtracking.

how viable is the shooting? Can I play this like some sort of third person shooter rpg? All I see is meler stuff :/

Looking at benchmarks, it seems like my GTX 770 would have a hard time even on low-mid settings.

I guess there should be some patches out by the time I eventually upgrade my GPU...

Other than the bow, it's pretty bad.

There's almost no animation at all and you're not aiming like in shooters, but instead soft-locking your target.

Shooting should be fine.

Just don't expect it to feel super great.

PB games have mostly felt designed around melee first.

The bow is awful, energy weapons are a bit better because you can use different types of shot. To me, the best weapon was my mind, as once I unlocked the PSI stuff from the Cleric faction I could finally kill everything without having to rely on cheap tactics (well, mostly, I still used the jetpack to get out of melee range and such)

Wait, the guns don't use the bow aiming crosshair? It uses the lockon?

Dunno about other weapons, but both the laser and plasma rifles use the same crosshair type as the bow.

Oh my god, this game has locked keys that can't be rebound. Fuck my life, why do developers do this? For those that use ESDF instead of WASD, you're shit out of luck. Good job PB, gonna have to refund the game.

Why not move your hand a little bit to the left and use WASD instead..?

It's not that simple, when you use a certain style for so long it gets locked into your muscle memory, having to redo it all makes it uncomfortable and a pita.

Try using e/s/d/f and see how that throws you off if you're used to w/s/a/d. There goes your muscle memory for q/e/r/shift/alt key, etc.

One thing they should definitely add in a patch is the possibility to mark the map yourself. You can set 1 marker, but I want permanent markers. It's just odd they didn't add that, they have created a huge map with so many interesting things in it, seems obvious you'd want to let people mark them.

which keys cannot be rebound?

Oh there can be a shit ton of backtracking.

"Backtracking" in good RPGs (Ultima, Gothic, etc) typically just means that areas are actually "lived" and you'll have plenty of good reasons to go back to them.
New monsters will appear in way that make sense to the story, old NPCs will have new interactions, things to say and quests, etc.

I will never understand the mentality of players that want any location in a RPG to be a "disposable" throw-away scenario you'll need to traverse only once.

Euro-jank is my favorite genre. I'm going to check this out if I can find time. I've bought 4 full priced games in the last 3 weeks, so it's rough for budget and playing time. I'll be following this thread tho.

Don't be shy with the screenshots guys.

All the keys that have a lock symbol next to them in the key configuration menu! Man I am so pissed. I wanted to play this game so badly and now I can't. Please if anyone found an ini file to edit the controls, please share! I tried looking but couldn't find anything.

90 minutes in, never played any Gothic or Risen, but loving this so far. Yeah, definitely has some control and menu issues, but nothing I can't get past. Can't wait for the weekend to put some real time into playing.

I've been playing the game for about 7 hours straight and it's pretty damn good so far. Sure, the UI is terrible, the voice acting is a problem and the combat is nothing to brag about but at least the melee combat is solid enough but really this is giving off the feel of a classic PB game. I love entering a settlement and when you get there it feels like a puzzle. You have a basic idea of what each faction is about but as you discover more you see that each warlord has their own motivations. There's loads of choice and consequence just in the little bit that I've played so far. I feel I've barely scratched the surface.

I feel like I probably should have went with melee combat but you can't dangle rocket launchers and flame throwers in front of me and not expect me to use guns.

Played about 3 hours:

Disclaimer I LOVE Gothic, Risen, Divine Divinity etc so i know what i’m getting with games like this. Know that it has bad animations, bad voice acting, clipping in environment etc etc BUT, there is just something magic for me with PB games.

I’ve got a huge (really seems big) world to explore with cities caves dungeons 4 factions - classless leveling where you can be whatever you want to - challenging combat - i think the game is super pretty maybe not technically but at 1440p maxed settings i love it. Music has been really good so far and reminiscent of Risen.

If you like open ended open world games with a TON of player choice in various aspects and can deal with the issues PB games always have, i can heartedly recommend Elex.

1 question: anyone figured out a faction to join yet? I’m leaning toward Berserkers for that classic feel of magic and medieval weaponry but i’m interested in the Clerics. I just don’t know much about them and not sure what to do! Picking a faction may be the hardest decision i make in the game....

Really enjoying this so far. Haven't really gotten into a PB game since Gothic, but that's what it feels like. I like the lack of leading you around by the nose and sense of exploration.
