Elite Dangerous: Horizons |OT| Just scratching the surface

that sad realization when you've reached the maximum potential accuracy with a hotas and if you want to get gud with fixed weapons you've gotta go back to m+kb

;_;

Been saying for a while that M+K is actually equal to superior...

Only nobody on their right mind at Frontier can have played extensively with the default mapping the game offers, because it's hilariously bad and unfinished and therefore drives people to buy a HOTAS.

Yeah having played for close to a year with the hotas going back to M+KB feels like a set back as far as comfort for mobility but as far as accuracy? Man suddenly I can hit sidewinders going at full speed at max range with my PAs like it's nothing.

David Braben is doing an AMA on Reddit right now.

Can you tell us anything about potential changes to the Season plan?

Co-op missions are a popular topic here, especially with Multicrew looming. Are there any plans to allow Cmdrs to participate in the same mission?

If I were to say the word 'caves' what would you say?

[–]DavidBrabenCEO & Founder 13 points 13 minutes ago

Hi Golgot. Firstly on the season plan; I don't think people liked having to pay for multiple updates in one go, so that is something we are going to move away from. At this end of the 'season' it makes sense, as people can see the huge number of features we are delivering, but it makes for a higher price.

Secondly, co-op missions is an interesting idea we are looking at for a future update, but there are a good deal of complexities too, which is why we haven't done them yet.

Thirdly I'd say "Canem" :)

So we're all gonna post our Commanders after we create them, right? And by that I mean, make a nice commander to post and then go with a female commander instead.

Some of Braben's stances on shit just don't make sense. On adding roles to multi-crew he's saying that will be based on how many people use it. Well...why would you expect a large amount of people to use something that's barely designed and you nerf payouts for? You can't look at low population using X poorly designed mechanic as evidence of anything but it being poorly designed.

On the other hand there will probably be quite a bit of multi crew people just using it as tourists at Jacque's or Beagle Point or some other out of the way place. Hopefully enough to convince them to give exploration multi crew an effort.

Sandro had the same exact response in the livestream. It's basically what they’ve already done with Wings, Power Play, and CQC: half implement what they said they would do and then move on to the next big shiny feature they can market and sell, while never going back to improve the already laid foundations. My expectations from Frontier’s responses on this is that multicrew will be just like it is launching in 2.3 for many years time, without ever being added to or improved upon. They don’t have any current plans to flesh it out, it’s not even on their roadmap at all right now, so any such work would be years away.

Take it or leave it pretty much, but they are done with multicrew for the foreseeable future. It is what it is.

Can't blame FD really, they only need to devote minimal resources to make framework updates to have the game sell.

Oh, burn! :'D I should narrow it down to online space game. Scope ought to be similar as well. Would be surprised to see X4 actually putting any pressure on ED.

I can just about imagine how great Elite would be if it was an offline game with seamless transitions and modding support.

I see you guys are feeling fun already today.

Anyway, taking screen shots of my CMDR config so I don't have to do it all over again from scratch. Pretty disappointed with the lack of skin complexion options.

Man, should I continue playing stellaris and persona 5 or log in tonight to screw around with the new patch.

Tough decisions.

Eh. I wouldn't be interested anymore. Playing cooperatively with friends is the main draw, or I could just go and play the old X games I haven't touched before. And don't plan to, as I have zero interest in an endless offline space game...

Developing Elite as an offline game would've certainly freed lots resources to be invested in fleshing out features. But I don't see the trainwreck they call game design being fixed by the game being offline. When the best you can do for bounty hunting activity is create instanced areas where wanted ships you're free to blow up spawn indefinitely and even insist on alterRiNG between sets that are worth a damn and those worth shit, I don't see what offline and seemless transition between those areas and "general space" would fix. Other than making mods possible, that are build by more competent game designers. :p

One thing I'll give you though, if it was an offline game, long range journeys might benefit of some form of timelapse or autopilot. That might fix the pretentious "space is big, have some more loading screens" or "go in a straight line for half an hour" bullshit they insist on preserving in the game.

I'll just agree to disagree, it's not a good online game when it has all of the drawbacks and none of the benefits.

Play that delightful Stellaris soundtrack while playing Elite?

Yeh, I was actually planning to do that. Great sound track and even better game. IMO really underrated. Pretty much a bit more complicated Civ game in space.

I didn't imagine bounty hunting with friends, so it has the benefits all right. :p

Or rather a shallow, feature-starved and inclomplete set of its potential benefits married with poor game design that'd be just as poor if it was an offline game. I still can't believe they claim to do an online game, but then are too afraid to implement formal guild features or a competent chat...

It's pretty good but goddamn that soundtrack is transcendental. Made the trip back from Beagle Point that much more tolerable.

I did that once but then fucked right off when I saw my bounties were halved and that there were no actual cooperative activities or missions. Half-baked doesn't even come close.

Anyway that's enough of that, I can't wait to recreate my douchebag android from Andromeda in 2.3, it's going to be great.

Yeah I am with Burny, elite when you can find an activity to fo with friends is something special.

Some of my favorite moments in this game are chilling at the 17D CZ with friends as well as screwing with people trying to do the CG and getting each other blown up by picking fights we had no chance of winning. Or when we decided to try mining and ended up just playing t7 bumper cars instead.

It's not even about the reward as much as it is not playing alone lol

As much as I shit on this game I really do absolutely love it.

Really excited for multi crew later just to see what we get to goof around with.

Good thing they fix that with 2.3, only two years after the introduction of wings:

2.3 changelog said:
  • When a bounty voucher or combat bond is awarded, all players in a wing who would previously have gotten a share will now get a copy of the full value

... only to preemptively fuck this up again for the new headline coop feature multicrew, introducing some intransparent bullshit rank-based substraction from the bounty for crew players. Because they're mortally afraid of people being able to speed up their carefully crafted early game progression and arrive too soon at the bigger ships. No fun allowed! (Edit: at least the helm gets full share, so that's something)

Funny, how they try to introduce a sensible coop feature with payouts that don't discourage participation, that in turn leads to reevaluation of their old cooperative feature which has been broken since it launched due to discouraging participation by means of gimped payouts, go on to finally fix the old feature and then break their new coop feature motivation for participation again, turning it into the same rubbish their old feature was since release. Sometimes these people really make you wonder. That's why I feel the "online" vs "offline" debate is a reduction of the issue to strawmen. As long as the same people were to call the game design shots, they'd find all new creative ways to break game design in an offline game as well.

Edit: Sorry for being a downer, but I have literally zero faith in Frontier's Elite team delivering competent game design and they managed to strike again with multicrew. I'm happy about the addition of faces, the asteroid bases and mega ships at least. That finally brings more much needed life into the game universe by means of diversity of locations and player characterization. But the game design... Mission chains aren't particularily motivating for me either. The missions are 90% tedium (supercruise and jump-grinding) and 10% normal flight, which is the game's strength. I don't think chaining them will improve that much.

So was Winters' decal ever added to the power play decal pack? Didn't see anything regarding it in the patch notes but wasn't sure if they ever went back and added her's in early after they said they would when 2.3 came out.

Careful with the nameplate purchases. The Ship ID pack is a separate purchase than the nameplates. Basically you have six different styles for the nameplates themselves, and then one choice for the shorter but larger ship ID plates. In order to get both your name and ship ID on your ships you need to buy at least two items of DLC: a nameplate, and an ID plate.

$3 + $3 = $6 for the full ship naming feature.

AMA with D. Braben kinda confirms 'space legs':

D. Braben said:
Thank you so much for everyone that took part.

It's great to see so many people participating on AMAs like this, and watching our live streams.

Speaking of which, I'm now off to appear on our live stream with Ed at about 2pm BST.

The future for Elite Dangerous is very exciting, including a whole raft of incredible features, yes including 'space legs' but so many more things too. We have such a great community, and we're really glad that you guys share our passion and support us.

Holy Hell, with all the new DLC put up on the store today, this update really should have been called Elite 2.3: Multi-DLC. Now I see why multicrew is so anemic, they had everyone working on DLC for the store!!!

Flightsuits, face tattoos, ship nameplates, new ship kits, and stuff is still being uploaded….

Commander Zorbs reporting for duty.

Only had a chance to take one pic with the new camera suite. Trying to figure out how it handles depth of field. But I can see myself spending a lot of time with the new camera.

I named it "The Duke". Whats the deal with the ship name/ship ID? What's the difference? when does one get used over the other?

How so?

In beta, nothing was bound. Make sure you have key/mouse bindings set.

There are two mouse cursors, one that appears to be only for show but is super sensitive and the normal cursor that randomly vanishes so you can't click on anything.

It worked perfectly fine in beta so not sure what's going on now.
