Elite Dangerous: Horizons |OT| Just scratching the surface

Best way to learn to play thi. Watch video tutorials or just jump in.

Think this is the type of game you need to watch some tutorials on. It's flight sim-esque when it comes to controls but without any of the insane start-up procedures. It's mostly the systems they have in place that aren't explained well.

Galactic Fork

A little fluff between the ears never did any harm...
*Sigh* I am really disappointed. I got my XBox One on this past Monday thinking Horizons had already come out, only to discover it didn't come out to the 3rd. Elite was $37, but I figured I'd just go ahead and get Elite, and then get the Horizons update on Friday, and only be out 7 bucks compared to the $60 bundle. But nooooo, the bundle also comes with the commander pack thing... which comes in a 45 dollar version of the horizon add on. So I really screwed myself over by getting Elite a few days before Horizons.

Well, at least Elite's really fun, and I spent an embarrassingly amount of time fiddling with Excel to make a spreadsheet to calculate distances of all the rare goods planets from each other. At least I did it at work.

8 rolls on my huge pulse laser and no special effect. DAMN :D Had spare materials so it's not that bad. It's interesting because only the huge laser had a chance for a special effect.

How do you manage to get that much material?
It was only grade one :( ;)

I bought myself an Anaconda. Fitted it with two lvl5 collector limpets and am sitting in highres scanning ships, mining some asteroids and if I see fit I shoot the bad guys. The authority is doing the rest. Got 7 million and 300 materials that way today (around 3 hours)

Grade one Pulse Laser does not need much material either (for light weight mount that is) - 2 phoshorus, 1 galvanising alloys

I just got 2 T16000m's for some sweet dual stick action. This is going to take some getting used to.

How am I supposed to get all the critical buttons on my hotas. I can't use a keyboard while in VR.

You can use button combinations. So you could group similar functions together on one button + a number of other buttons. That's how I mapped most stuff on an xbox controller.
A + dpad was super cruise, landing gear, hardpoints etc.
A + bumpers was chaff and shield cells.
B + dpad was UI stuff

you can make it pretty intuitive.

....did Frontier change up RES in some systems?!

There was a Hazardous so close to the station in my home system and it's gone. I only see High and Low now. What the fuck Frontier?!

Not sure if this is an Oculus Rift/VR issue, or a controller issue, but in game, if I press the back button on my xbox controller, it seems to make all my inputs stop working in game, but I can hear it selecting stuff somewhere.

So like, everything is great, then I press back button, and now when I use the stick to aim/move or whatever it does nothing on screen, but it sounds like its making selections in a menu somewhere, haha.

Running it on steam? That happens, the Xbox controller is controlling the steam menu in the background. Not sure how to fix that.

You can't even bind the back button since one of the recent updates, because that just cancels the "press a button" popup. You have to modify the binds file to do it.

And yes, SteamVR has this annoying menu that pops up when you press the back button. I haven't been able to get it to stop. It's really annoying because back basically toggles my hand brake.

Thought I'd do some missions for GAF but even a cargo run is impossible. Got diverted to complete the mission at an outpost even though I'm in a Corvette and there's no way to turn it in at the original destination.

Back to the engineers.

VoiceAttack.
This only works if you can make noise :D I'd like to use it but if I talk to my PC all the time my GF is going nuts and my son wakes up :D When I'm too loud that is. Which happens :D

Yep!
That's what I do with my x52 pro
Like I posted earlier here I use my fire button for switching. Since it has two phases which are represented in "button 1" and "button 15" I can use it to tripple assign all buttons. (Just hold all three buttons when assigning them in settings)

That way I have the "Deploy Hardpoints" button set to
Deploy Hardpoints
Toggle Silent Running (first phase fire button - Button 1)
Toggle Flight Assist (second phase fire button - Button 1 and Button 15 pressed)
Same with the thumb button on the throttle
it's used for Boosting in my case
with first phase fire button it's Hyperspace (jump to other system)
with second phase fire button it's Supercruise (start supercruising if target is obscured)

I'm not quite sure. I had one case of this as well I guess. Thought I mixed it up though.

Something went wrong when I entered this ring, but it was pretty neat.

You can do missions for gaf? I have no clue what I am doing. I just flew around delivering shit.

Damn, almost lost my SRV today. Logged into the game and immediately began to drop below the planet's surface. Thankfully, logging out and back in brought me back up to the surface. Maybe I'm not so crazy when I start boosting as soon as I spawn, before the ground has a chance to pop in.

Only 6K out from the core.

oo man, never log out landed on a planet; especially when exploring. I once logged in and my entire ship was inside the planet.

I stowed the Corvette away and very carefully sold and rebought its upgraded FSD and thrusters to put on an explorer Conda, the jump range turned out decent for a heavier build.

I was just about to do this when I checked back into this thread, good timing. Won't be back in the bubble until there's more work done on material limits, mission reward commodities and module storage, or until I think I can hit exploration Elite, whichever comes first.

Engineer-ed FSD? That's a pretty respectable jump range. If engineers were involved, how long did the upgrade take?

I think it took a few days to get from 3rd grade to 5th but I wasn't exclusively going for FSD mats. The jump from 4th to 5th was exceptionally shit, the roll was something like a 3-4% increase compared to the previous grade.

I could easily get a bigger range with smaller thrusters but I like the speed I get with my current ones, makes having no weapons a bit less suicidal.

Landed on my first planet this weekend and drove around with the SRV. Must have been low gravity, it was bouncing around. Had a blast just aimlessly driving. But now I have some questions.

What is there to do on the planets besides the mission specific objectives? Does the detailed surface scanner give you a better idea of which planets to check out? Can you mine on the planets? Are there different SRVs you can get, like more combat focused. Pretty sure you can't, but can you upgrade the SRV in any way?

Aside from the mission objectives you can also gather engineer materials by breaking apart some rocks with the laser on the SRV. I'm not sure if you can mine regular materials, I didn't find any when I messing around, but I didn't spend a lot of time looking either.

The detailed surface scanner gives you more info about the planet i.e gravity and composition. I.e if it has a high level metal content you'll usually find better materials.

You can't mine on planets but you can find materials if you use the scanner. There is currently only one SRV in the game, cant upgrade the SRV.

Thanks for the answers guys. I will stop asking silly questions at some point I'm sure. :)
Off to do some planet exploring now.

Is this game still not completed, because I've had several missions I cant seem to do. The first mission is to find black boxes, but the mission wont accept them I dont know why if its a bug or whatever. Then another mission I go to the specific station and there is no mission board or any way to hand in the goods for mission.

Like here, there's no way of completing it.

yeah I had this too. go to the place for a promotion mission to deliver covert data, and no one there wanted any covert data. no choice but to let it fail.

did have an instance where I couldn't drop off cargo, but it was because my cargo bay wouldn't allow for the reward which was... more cargo.

I had this happen to me once and I couldn't find a cause. Someone told me that it was because part of the reward was material and my cargo was probably full which could have been the case I guess (I abandoned the mission so couldn't check after the fact).

I started only taking boom data delivery missions until I could grab the higher level missions and haven't had any issues yet, but maybe I've just been lucky and you were unlucky to get two in a row.

Noob question time, the 3:2:1 planet materials ratio doesn't exist any more does it?

And some texture porn:
highresscreenshot_2016xxqp.jpg

oo man, like I said in my previous posts, the increased quality of both the textures and the performance of the planet stuff is the best thing about the latest update.

Agreed. I did some mods to that specific profile and added commands for rudder pedals to handle Yaw. It's simply the best.

CH, folks. Accept no substitutes if affordable.

VKB sim is very difficult to get hold of, but the only thing I'd recommend over CH products stick, especially with their gladiator pro stick offering a cheap alternative for a very high quality stick with a metal gimbal (Ch products uses a high quality plastic, but VKB is still the only company to offer specific machined gimbals for their sticks) and a contactless MarS proximity sensor which wears even less than a hall effect sensor whilst also being more accurate, plus the gladiator pro is also compatible with their metal KG-12 grip, for an even more premium feel if you want it. it's rumoured to be from £110-£150 for the stick, but should be well worth it considering it shares some of the same internals as their flagship mamba and gunfighter sticks.

My ideal setup would have VKB pedals and stick with a CH throttle

The problem with VKB is that they're a small company, so they don't have much stock and take preorders very early on, even more difficult if you live in Europe. Anyone have a good amount of money to spend should definitely look into seeing if they can get in on the Gladiator pro soon.

The metal gimbal alone for that price is insane

That's what I do. Fixed is so hard with FA OFF. And gimballed are much better at hitting modules as well.

I find fixed easier with FA off, because you can make small adjustments to your rotation instead of having to hold the stick at one specific point continuously.

Gimballed will hit more, but then you have to worry about chaff. I wish there was a gimballed version with a smaller range.

Does anyone play for extended periods in VR?

How long can you stand to play?

I had nothing to do last weekend so spent a pretty large amount of time playing. I probably went at least five hours and it didn't bother me at all. Nothing in the game has really affected me aside from putting the SRV to full throttle and spinning the turret around quickly while bouncing around on a planet.

To be honest, I didn't even notice how much time was passing by, the Oculus is comfortable enough that I could have easily kept going with no issues. I just wish there was an in-game web browser on the ship for the long downtimes when traveling.

Still looks blurry at medium distance, but yeah they did a great job (before and after the update) considering the previous planetary detail was mostly procedural noise.

Every time I go exploring I think this, adding the game in Steam just to use the overlay's crappy browser is the only real option right now.

I need to try this in the bigger slower ships. With eagle, vulture and FAS thus is damn hard because they turn so fast :) could work on the Anaconda though

I play elite in vr only and if I play it's for around 3-5 hours :)

yes, SRV is not that good haha but besides this elite is easily playable

Thank god there is a clock in the hud now :)

And yeah, a Web browser or video area would be ace
