What kind of ship is the Diamondback? Is there a new mining mechanic?

No news on the role of the Diamondback yet, and mining has a lot of enhancements: surveyor drones (to scout material/content of asteroid), scoop drones (to pick up floating fragments), and low/high intensity resource extraction sites (low has less pirate activity and is safer, but less yield; high has more pirate activity and is less safe, but higher yield).

They did say that mining is getting an overall bump in terms of profitability--even the low intensity RES will contain more materials/profit than the current RES.

Belt clusters aren't affected by these changes, btw.

well I did it boys. I did enough missions to get Baron status in the Empire and enough bounty runs at local RES sites to get enough money to buy a Clipper.

I am now the proud owner of the most under-equipped Imperial Clipper in the universe. I feel like I just bought a BMW 7-Series with no A/C, no CD, no Cruise Control, no Power Windows or Locks. Just the car and AM/FM.

I need another 3.5M just to have a respectable powerplant and FSD...and another 6 mill away from having quality weapons on it.

but I did it. I'm styish as fuck...and broke as fuck.

Congrats, now earn money to be able to cover insurance, once you have that safety net you should focus on outfitting.

This seems like exactly what people who were turned off by a lack of concrete goals, needed. Lots of potential here. I'm looking forward to it.

Yup. Powerplay brings a persistent "storyline" for each faction, AND lets you influence it. Can't fucking wait.

I hope this eventually extends to the frontier. Right now it seems faction vs faction exclusively, but I hope there will be "expand the Federation along this route!" missions, where you work to inhabit empty space.

It would be AWESOME if we could create waystations way out in unoccupied space. Would be nice to have some little areas of occupied space for explorers to drop into in case of emergency.

Thanks. I never done mining but my co-workers said I should wait till they get scooper drones. I didn't know there would be surveyor drones.

I am doing that community fight right now (at the 40% group) and hope to either get a type6 or diamondback depending on if I should mine or trade.

I put so much money into my cobra for rare trading/combat.

Powerplay seems to be more combat and trade focused, but I've got a hunch that an exploration focused patch in the "near" future will allow us to do just that: expand and build stations to new systems. The powerplay update seems to be adding all of the foundations and framework needed to do just that.

Are we not getting any drones to help with or augment exploration? I remember seeing that surface scan concept a few pages back but I want more. Would be cool if they actually put wing exploration mechanics in to efficiently map and survey. I know they talked about some form of that previously.

Straight from the newsletter,
New drones for collecting cargo, prospecting, mining and transferring fuel to empower you whether you favour trading, combat or exploration, whether you prefer to fly with friends or alone.

The fact that they clearly differentiated prospecting and mining leads me to believe there will be some types of discovery/scanning drones for exploration purposes.

I think they mean the drones used to scan the asteroids for resources being different from those used to collect the ore.

Playing Community Goals in Solo play gives you the same rewards as Open?

Man...that's kinda lame and I don't want to have to do that but the credits per hour and living without the fear of ganks is too tempting to pass up I think.

So what the hell is up with the debug camera. I tried it out while autodocking. The popup said "use normal flight controls to move the camera". Ok, great, tried that, camera doesn't really move, next thing I know I'm hearing shield grind noises, pop back into the cockpit and I see I'm caught on a tower it tells me I have 1 second left to clear the pad, autodock computer says "approach docking bay", and then I get zapped into oblivion. I didn't even have enough for my rebuy, but it took out a loan for 57k which I didn't know was a thing. So I guess that's the bright side.

Also tried fixed weapons on the Clipper, I know people said it was bad, but I guess I didn't realize it was unusable. But yeah, 2 buttons to fire 4 weapons that aim in completely different spots. There's no way to 'skill' it into being decent.

Then I winged up with someone, he had to leave for a few minutes, he came back, and the wing invites would just instantly disappear. Then every five or so seconds the game would freeze for a good half second, which got super annoying. I think that's enough Elite for tonight. Can't say I enjoyed today's run.

interestingly, insurance is only about 300k over what my Vulture.

of course that will go up as I spec it out. but that'll be a couple of weeks, I think. I wonder just how much Insurance will be once I start adding $5 mill parts to it.

My mostly A and D spec explorer outfitted clipper is 1.75m insurance

not bad. i'll be specing mine for combat. I know it's not the best combat ship, but idgaf. I had to sell my Vulture to make sure I could afford it while the discount was on, and fighting is what I like to do in the game. I'm sure I'll move out of it and on to something one day but I'm gonna make this work for now.

New Powerplay update sounds VERY good. Hopefully it's as involved as it seems, because it will be great fighting for your power and voting on what to do on a weekly basis. Hopefully the missions are a bit more involved, as well.

Clipper is very capable in combat. 2 x large gimballed burst lasers, 2 x gimballed medium mc was the best combination I could find, and I tried damn near every combination available. Shields are paper thin though, so you'll want at least 2 x boosters.

I'm going to jump back in for a bit over the weekend to take a break from GTA and attempt to build up some funds. I'm thinking about going to investigate the conflict area that I saw listed on the active community goals to see if I can get some funding and rep. Granted I can make more at RES if I've been paying attention but I had fun in the conflict areas in Lugh due to the ships having shields and the verity of ships present vs the random "luck" in RES.

It sounds awesome, but I was a little underwhelmed by their newsletter. It offered a pretty vague overview of the feature, plus a rundown of little things that we already knew (drones). I just wanted some more details to tell some people about, other than a somewhat nebulous "you can join factions and complete missions for them!"

The community manager basically couldn't tell us anything, either. I hope Braben's AMA is a bit more relaxed with info!

EDIT: AMA is live https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=140032

First case seems to be a bug. You could open a ticket.

Devs have worked on the autodock computer, should work better in 1.3.

There are some bug fixes to Wings in Powerplay coming, and we are continuing to look at all issues.

As for your freezing problem... Never happened to me.

There already are... ;-)

Don't think they'll ever add some sort of intelligence/intrigue angle to the content/faction struggle. Pretty lame. Let me be a spy damn it.

roger that. I have a pair of A3 shield boosters on her that were on my old Vulture. I think they'll feel pretty good once I upgrade the shield generator itself.

Upgrading the shield generator is my next item purchase. Then the FSD.

I am running the same setup you were running it seems. 2 high-quality, large gimbaled burst lasers (also from my old vulture) and 2 multicannons. The damage is outrageous.

What I got so far:

  • General Information
    • Beta test is coming--dates will be announced noon
    • Think of Powers as "intervening layer" between Minor Factions (small powers with local governance) and Major Factions on the top; however, not all Powers are linked to a Major Faction
    • You can be aligned with multiple powers, but only one at the same time; the same actions to support a chosen Power can have an effect on your wider rep with a major faction--there is a lot of interrelation between Powers and Minor Factions
    • The more influence you have with a Power, the greater the repercussions if you defect
    • Cannot rename powers, for consistency sake; however, they are looking into being able to name/rename minor factions that have risen due to player action
    • Powers can be aligned with Independent factions
    • It is unlikely that a group of factions can form one huge, mega-Power and dominate, as there are escalating costs and supply line issues based on the distance from the Power's "capital"
    • Multiple Powers can work together, but it depends on the ethos of the Power(s). These relationships can be supported by players, or sabotaged
    • Community Goals will still be around and will connect with Powerplay (example: campaign of CGs to elevate a Minor Faction to a Power)
    • Players can influence what happens to NPCs. The question was specifically about choosing next Emperor, and Braben cryptically remarked "Medicine in 3301 is pretty good, so the Emperor may be in a coma for a while yet..." So maybe if Medicine supply lines are cut, the Emperor could die!
    • ~10 powers available at Powerplay's launch
    • Not all systems/factions are influenced or "under" a Power, especially frontier systems
    • Powerplay will give players reasons to venture into dangerous anarchy systems and enemy held space in trade ships, making protected convoys more viable
    • Nothing in the galaxy is being "reset" to prep for Powerplay. At most, some minor factions may be renamed/modified to ensure all factions are unique
    • Powerplay is optional--you don't have to join a Power. Power-specific perks won't be available, but you will be able, of course, to reap benefits that come when any Power changes
    • Powers and their associated characters can die, come and go, etc.
    • Powers can change what is legal vs illegal in a system
    • The Power that Braben has aligned with has not been revealed yet (suck it, Imperial scum)
    • Powerplay won't allow "carte blanche" when it comes to combat. You can attack "anyone" if you're in a system controlled by your Power, as long as they are aligned with a Power different from your Major Faction
    • Powers could provide safety zones to players within the faction
    • It's possible for a Major Power to be wiped from the galaxy, but is unlikely
    • Minor factions can become Powers if they are successful enough; "There’ll be a chance at this for an Old World resurgence around the time of the Powerplay launch – if the players should choose to back them."
  • Power Perks
    • Power-specific weapons/modules will be available; more info at announcement
    • There is no exploration-oriented Power, but there is a Power with exploration-specific perks
    • Looking into Power-specific paint jobs, but probably won't be in 1.3
  • Other 1.3 Updates
    • In-cockpit GalNet can access global news but system news requires you be in-system
    • "When will there be non-celestial things to discover in deep space?" "There already are... ;-)" and he wasn't referencing probes. He says what he is referring to was actually added in 1.2
    • NPC piracy profitability will be buffed
    • No advanced player group options (kicking out hostile players, for example) coming in Powerplay
    • Rank up notifications are coming
    • Imperial Slavery is similar to signing up for the army. You have a fixed period of time and do what they say for that time. How "acceptable" this work is is dependent on the army you signed up with
    • Imperial Courier
      • "Master" is required rank for Imperial Courier
      • Imperial Courier is "shiny fast multi-role ship" that could be used as a fighter, but it's not a specialist fighter
    • Ship scan will show the aligned Power
    • Next week's dev update with be a "Crime Special" regarding bounties and pirates
    • Wing bug fixes are coming in Powerplay
    • Detailed system map, with orbits, etc., is still coming, but doesn't sound like it's coming in 1.3

On "God-like powers" (???)
There has been a considerable discussion on the practicalities of what those God-like powers mean in the game. We see a path where the DDF (and perhaps other invited members of the community) have direct input into the Powers.

We are looking into ways we can make this work, but it will not be in Powerplay at day #1. Maybe even one of the powers could be driven directly by the DDF?

Which is when comms chatter started to appear on galnet regarding unidentified craft being sighted in the outer reaches..

You know, I was in a far flung out system the other day, still within inhabited space, and saw something suuuuuuuper far away on the HUD that wasn't anything within the navigation tab.

But I was in the middle of a 30-45 minute stint of hunting a USS for a mission, so I was a little irritated and couldn't be bothered to make the long journey and see what it was.

I regret it.

Hmm...I have noticed a group of very bright stars arranged in a pattern while on my travels. Time to plot a course towards them I guess. Will grab a screenie of them next time I'm on.

Pulling the information from the active goals thread on the community forum gives this. I'm not sure of the specifics on where it is in the galaxy though and if any of the big factions control the area.
System: BV Phoenicis
Station: Aoki Dock
Objective: Submit combat bonds to the Conservatives of BV Phoenicis at Aoki Dock

Some random pics from my exploration journey. Couple of ammonia and water worlds and earth-likes, among other things: http://m.imgur.com/a/vKhQu

Neat photos, thanks for sharing them! At some point I'm going to work my way up to a ship suited for exploration and give it a try (I keep saying that). I guess that is more incentive to return from my break and start working towards my goal again.

Can't imagine going back out and exploring. Really need to enhance it somehow. Super tedious and boring after a while.

Yeah, I'm hoping exploration is gonna get some love in 1.4 or something. I am curious what those exploration perks for a Power will be, though.

I'm not expecting anything too crazy.
Maybe you get like 10% more credits if you sell your data in a system controlled by your Power or something like that.
