Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

I...I want to buy one of those!

They don't normally attach to a saitek HOTAS. I used a piece of 8" x 4' particle board as the main attachment, then used a 8" x 8" piece of wood to hold the throttle. Painted everything black, 3 coats of eggshell black over a coat of primer. The rudders were most difficult to attach, I cut 2 strips of 2' long thin pieces of steel and bolted them to the rudders using #10 3" nuts and bolts, and then cut and filed down the excess bolt.

It was actually a lot of work getting this together, but man I'm stoked. I'm about to boot up elite to try it all out.

And here I am with my X52 pro velcroed onto a cutting mat. :P

I'm having a little bit of a hard time with Elite because most of the HUD/UI is a bit difficult to read. It's also tough to use the mouse/kb with it having such intense controls (this may prompt me to finally order sticks/etc. Any suggestions?).

It's probably a good idea for me to learn the game outside the Rift first. Other than these small complaints, I was pretty blown away. I flew a space ship!

I'm finding it really hard to locate the docking areas in the stations, am I missing something really obvious?
I applied for and got permission to dock but then spent the majority of my time trying to locate the actual bay. Once I found it I only had 30seconds to dock which led to me flying in at full speed and promptly blowing myself up!

Just been given confirmation of my new commander name :

Commander Kymbo

hehehe

I posted about this on the Elite forum but has anyone else been dealing with a constant minor stutter even though the framerate is otherwise OK? I've been getting it since day one of the premium beta. I figured it would sort itself out but it's still there and it's going to make DK2 a real mess.

Yes I get this, FRAPS shows a solid 60fps but still get an odd micro stutter.

I was having stuttering issues too with the DK2 especially when looking around the cockpit and space stations. From what I have been reading on the forums, the DK2 seems to have juddering issues with any frame rate drop below 75 fps. I have an overclocked GTX 780 and still had to reduce some graphics settings from max so that it plays smoothly.

There's a simple trick :)

The entrance is always in the side that is rotating counter clockwise relative to your position.

For stations like Azeban City, just observe its rotation. There are two sides of the station that don't move around the axis and just rotate. So, which of the two sides is it? If the station is rotating from top to bottom, it's the right side of your screen, if it's the opposite, from bottom to top, it's to your left.

For all the other stations (that are cilinder-esque) the same applies, it's always in the counter-clockwise side relative to your position, which is often the biggest side of the cilinder as well.

At around 8km away you'll also see the metallic grid for the docking, and if you lock on the station in the Comms tab, you'll get the model rendered in the left side of your cabin, so you can also check there (depending on the angle of your ship) if the entry is there or not :)

Quick question, when doing a bounty mission and trying to find the target, is it all about just flying in the system where I got the job (unless specified otherwise) and finding Unidentified Scanning Targets, checking each until I find the target?

Is there a way to plot multiple jumps to your destination or is the nav system limited to one destination at a time?

I have a t-flight hotas x. Is there a good way to configure it so that I can navigate the ships menus without a lot of hassle? Also what about the head look? Will I need track IR or can I use the joystick+toggle?

Yep, that's how it has to go at the moment.

Is there a way to plot multiple jumps to your destination or is the nav system limited to one destination at a time?

No, not at the moment. You have to do jump after jump by hand. Apparently in the future they will add nav computers.

Yep. Wouldn't recommend them.

Pretty much aimless needle in the haystack gameplay.

If that's how it ends up been in the final version, I'd be sorely disappointed.

Change your handle. No one can add you with your 3 character name. 4 character minimum search.

Which is really dumb, but it is how it is currently.

That's weird. Some people have already added me in, and one even sent an invite in-game while flying at supercruise!

Interesting. Well, in that case, why don't you add everyone on the list? :P that's one way to get peeps on.

I'm just not sure how to interact with my friends list yet.

I bought the beta last night, and just docked for the first time...holy shit...i love how hands-on this game is, beautifull.

What the hell is this?

I was thinking maybe a high gravity laboratory (because why the fuck not that would be a cool thing), but I doubt you'd find that on a mining station, and upon closer inspection it kinda just looks like a huge metal rod...

Thanks for the info...it was a little frustrating but I guess that's the learning curve! :)

Stations are procedurally generated out of different parts so they can look different.
I guess this one is a little bugged and decided to put a huge metal rod on itself :D

It's just a big hammer for smashing asteroids.

really really dumb question. I normally have my PC in my office but we are relocating and will be in corporate housing for the next 6 months. Is there any chance I can play this game with an Xbox one controller and not my HOTAS set up?

I meant that I get that stutter even before connecting the DK2. It's still there after turning graphics settings as low as possible and dropping resolution to 1280x800.

If I turn vsync off, I'm getting well over 100 FPS at those settings but the stutter still shows up every few seconds. It's really annoying.

"Ok Charlie, we need to do some more mining, so go ram the station into the asteroid!"

"Sure thing, boss."

I love it :D

So I got myself an Eagle yesterday, so when I come home from work tonight, I'll stream some Eagle gameplay for a bit, trying to catch some pesky pirates!

It works fine with a 360 pad, that's how I played it while waiting for my HOTAS to arrive.

So trading pays a lot.. bought my way to an hauler and now im making roughly 7k profit per 1 node jump. But what im doing so far is very basic, so im wondering if i search a bit are there goods that can generate mad profits?

Its also interesting for future traders how the mechanic of jump distance greatly favors traders, the lakon type 6 has a 12 LY jump capability while the type 9 has 35 LY jump. Outrunning pirates should be possible since small fighters have short jump distances (so far). No idea what the viper or anaconda jump distances are.

Btw, Wyrd system is quite rich..

Goddamn this game to hell. I just can't catch a break. FUcccckkkk.

It's just really hard to kill a cobra solo in a sidewinder, shitty NPC or not shitty NPC.

Why the fuck do they make the NPC so hard anyway?

I've died so many times I've had to reset, and the first mission you get when you reset? Eranin/Dahan defense force shit.

And what do you see when you get to the locations you're supposed to go? Fucking 1 federal fighter - the only thing that's reasonably easy to ping in a sidewinder... and cobras and eagles and anacondas.

Seriously, these guys did not think about the actual play experience starting out. I mean, ok, it's not the full game yet, but still, this is exactly the kind of shit that the playerbase needs to ping them for before release so that the game is actually fun to play.

At this point, it feels like Gran Turismo 5. There's a beautiful game mired under the hubris of the menus and poor user experience; in this case, instead of slow menus, they've got jumping into and out of supercruise to serve the same do nothing for long stretches at a time transition.

It's not just dropping into and out of supercruise - it's navigating to locations in super cruise. It's not just a case of accelerate and be there - every jump involves a slow minute long wind up and deceleration.

And then when you are actually doing something exciting like combat... the encounters aren't exactly well balanced.

It seems to suffer from a classical design issue; where the further you progress into the game, the easier everything is. Which means that it has a brutal brutal upfront curve.

A lot of that can be better solved through better game design.

The Premium beta conflict zones were actually a great starter location - slow, easy rewards to get players feet wet on the combat. Great place to go swat flies.

No kill limits, and no loss of credits if you die before you cash it in (currently: if you die before you return to base you lose all the credits - you have to cash in bounties which you lose upon death).

Mission structure is also just atrocious like I mentioned before. If you're given a system to jump to, you're not given a broad indication of how to locate the targets - the lead designer has literally told players that the intent is for you to fly around and investigate unidentified signals.

Well, that's like searching for a needle in the haystack - not a whole lot of fun, time consuming, and a lot of luck required.

And even if you do get into battle with the right opponents; the AI is tough. And sidewinders against larger ships requires a lot of skill and a lot of luck. And the rewards they pay is shit - so it's not as if the intention is for you to go and grind you way up to a decent ship so you can take on these risky, time consuming, but highly rewarding combat missions.

The whole thing just reeks of people pulling numbers out of thin air and releasing it without actually playing through the user experience.

A reasonable play experience would provide sufficient stepping stones to get players started with little friction. Then ramp up the difficulty as they teach you the skills you need to take on more daunting tasks, with punctuations of higher risk and reward scenarios along the way.

Pretty much the only mission worth taking right now are delivery missions. Thousands of credits for moving one piece of cargo around. Only problem is, those missions are few and far between - the game shouldn't devolve into you loading and reloading so that you can get one of those missions to spawn. But that's what you gotta do to optimize the earning rate.

And you want to do that, because the sidewinder while a decent ship, is just less capable than all the other ships you'll come up against.

I want this so bad.

...

We have to make these comments in the official forums. The good thing is that they read, and design according to feedback.

The mission system is bogus now so i didnt even bother. Sometimes i go see a unknown signal source to see if im lucky. I agree that the dogfights are tough but, a cobra (if it doesnt have missiles) are easy targets with a sidewinder imo, do you lateral thrust out of they way when they eventually (and they all do) attack you from the front? I died against them in an instance where they were 3, i waited just a tad too long to see what they were up to, they all had freaking missiles! I didnt even have time to fight back.

I agree they have to balance things out for early players, its always standard to have an easy starting area.

The sidewinder is free though, we shouldnt expect it to outperform anything outside of large slow ships. I see no problems starting with it and knowing it'll require some work beating an eagle or cobra, but its doable. AI really sucks at anticipating horizontal thrusts, they fight like WW2, you have a lot more tools to play with than WW2 planes ;)

I figured it out guys!

To all those trying to add me: Add % to your search, so it looks like SIG% . The % is a wildcard character apparently, and can be used to fill in the spaces of usernames with three or less letters.

I just couldn't help myself. Even though I said I was going to bed and would try it proper today, I had to swing through real quick last night. My only other experiences with positional tracking were the low-fi Valve demo from SDD and our own work with HL2VR, so Elite Dangerous was like my first big-budget experience.

Just... holy shit. It works so well. Everything is awesome. I cranked that bitch as high as all the settings would go and just became engulfed in the experience. I said "Ok, I'm just gonna land in a dock then go to bed." But like every small detail commanded minutes of inspection. The radar in particular is so awesome now that you have the ability to move your head. It actually makes a lot of sense as a 3D radar now, where it was kind of hard to use on DK1.

Landing was awesome, so much fun. Then I had to spend some time just craning my neck around the cockpit to take it in. Then I had to fly around in space a bit more. Oh and just one more thing to check out, then another, then another.

I began dinking around with Elite at about 11 pm. When I took my headset off, after what was supposed to be only a few minutes to test it out, it was 4 am. I spent 5 hours in VR without realizing it. And all I did was dock and fly around in space.

Sooooo cool.

Huh. They actually toned the AI and the ships you encounter way down. It's almost too easy now in many places compared to the Premium Beta.

Guess mileage may vary.

Btw, in flight assist off mode now, it keeps the boost's speed, i dont know if its a bug but its a nice way to escape, put all the power in shields, flight assist off and boost, you'll be at max speed without needing to distribute power to engines. Nice way to manage heat too without boosting constantly.

That's not a bug. FA off turns off your forward thrusters that normally fire when it's on. It's quasi-Newtonian in some ways since you'll just keep moving forward without even having to use thrusters.

I say quasi, since Frontier intentionally limits your speed and even after using boost again during FA off, your speed doesn't increase. There's a cap.

Anyway, that with silent running can be pretty helpful. In asteroid fields, combine that with deploying heat sinks and you can confuse your enemy since the heat signatures can get picked up in enemy radar.

Just ordered the CH Fighterstick und CH Pro Throttle for like 270€.

I think its ~200$ in the US. Fucking expensive for us here in Europe. :<

Have not decided yet, I think M&KB is fine especially with the ship interface. maybe I will get a sole joystick and go stick + KB.

It automatically slowed down to non boost speeds in premium beta though, even in flight assist off. Thats why i thought it was good to mention it.

I love some of the touches.

Like the way that turning off your life support causes a graphical overlay of a helmet visor, and breathing apparatus sounds.

I like using the FA off / boost / all systems shutdown if I drop out of frameshift too far for comfort in a less regulated system, point towards the station, turn off FA, boost then go dark, better than silent running as far as making myself less of a target, although if I do get spotted & targetted like this, I'm going to be dead quickly due to the time it takes me to get back into normal running config from this mode haha.

The comments in this thread got me to buy this yesterday. Tried it out last night, and I have no idea what I'm doing, but I like it. If I didn't have a wife and child, I could definitely see this as a "spend the whole weekend in front of the computer" sort of game.

Also got my DK2 yesterday, so naturally today I ordered a CH flightstick and pro rudder. Should be here tomorrow. It's been an expensive few days.

I'm in the same boat. No clue what I'm doing haha. I'm using a controller and a dk2, already have a steering wheel setup, can't afford the hotas. Maybe we should watch a few YouTube tutorial type deals to catch us up to speed faster?

Watching videos or streams is always good.
When i stream later tonight and you feel like jumping in I can answer whatever questions you have.

Just got home from work, downloaded the new hotfix, boot up game, try to push on friends and stuff. It waits for a while, and nothing happens, then i hear a sound as if i was constantly clicking :/ And none of the menu options work, i push on them but nothing happens...

Tried to push anything else, nothing happens.... Game is broken for me at the moment :(
Made a post about this in their boards under this patch thread. if it gets accepted that is.

nah mate, that happens a lot to me, just press the menu a few more times. it's usually just some lag when trying to connect to the servers. Maybe they are borked cause everyone is connecting right now.
