Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

First post here, hello! I've been playing since Alpha, and it's been fascinating to see the development on ED as it happens. Trying out 4K screenshot mode for the first time earlier... can't quite believe the results I'm getting :)

Elite in the Rift is just something else. I know that OR support wasn't originally a part of the plan, but I feel like the whole game was made with the Rift in mind.

There's just so many little quirks the game has that makes it perfet for the Rift.

Some of the wow moments for me.

- Flying under the rings of a planet. You see the individual asteroids and marvel at how fucking huge those rings are.

-Flying in the airlock. It seems like a small thing, but even seeing the scale of the airlock and how it seems to constrict you when another spacecraft flies in another way, just sends shivers down my body.

-Approaching docking and seeing those docking numbers. This one came out of left field. Having played in the monitor and landing I never gave a second thought to those numbers. Approaching them in the Rift, and seeing the scale of those numbers just grounds you in the whole spaceport.

-Flying near a spaceport and looking up and seeing the whole top of your canopy in just the exquisite detail of the spaceport. Truly beautiful.

-When in the hangar, you're seeing the gas vent right above front of your ship. When I first saw that, that's what confirmed to me I'm in this world. That one gas vent grounded me in the Elite Dangerous world.

I'm pretty sure I'll have more wow moments. Yes, the resolution can still improve, SDE is still there, black smears on the cockpit and the text is still kind of hard to read. But all that just melts away after you're sitting in the cockpit and you're no longer in front of a computer, but in the year 3300 witnessing human ingenuity at its finest.

I can say that spaceports such as those in the game will not be possible in my lifetime, but that doesn't mean I haven't been in them and witnessed their majestic beauty.

I was sitting in a hangar, and there were little particles of dust floating around. Some dust started floating towards my nose and I swatted at it from instinct. I ended up knocking the side of my Rift pretty hard.

The game is goddamn gorgeous, even in beta.

EDIT: At the risk of sounding elitist (lol no pun intended), Elite in VR is the first thing I feel like I can point to and say "this is next-gen."

I own a PS4, Xbox One, and WiiU. This blows everything else away. It's so far beyond anything else out right now.

It's not elitist. It's fucking true. Nothing that I've played on the PS4 matches my experience of sitting in that cockpit with the Rift on for the first time having stared at that steam vent right in front of your ship for 15 min.

I stared at that vent for 15 goddamn minutes. Yeah, they did something right.

Dk2 is nothing like it was for DK1. It was cool and neat in DK1, but with DK2 it actually feels like a real game. It's no longer a super cool demo to try out, and now it's something you can sit down and play for hours and hours.

I'm so blown away by this game. The first time I tried it with DK2, I said I was gonna pop in for 5 minutes then go to bed. Took off the headset and 5 hours had passed without me realizing.

Anyone owns a Thrustmaster Hotas X and this game ? I just want to know if the combo works well, i need to be ready when my DK2 arrives in September (i hope).

Not trying to port beg or anything but is there a chance of this game coming to the PS4/Xb1?

Cause this game looks pretty damn amazing.

Can anyone tell me a bit about missions in this game, i tried to do one of the missions were you have to kill eranins (?) or something, i went to a conflict zone found a few ships but had no idea who are players and who were npc's i needed to kill. Also if you complete a mission do you need to 'turn it in' or how does it work in general?

Some things in this game so friggin cool, like dropping out of supercruise in a saturn kind of ring and finding yourself in an asteroid belt....awesome.

They mentioned consoles in one interview, but don't expect it till way after release. Since they will also have the expansions to work on for the game.

Thanks for the quick reply. :)

I don't mind waiting, pretty cool that they are considering it.

Yeah, they need to fix the bounty missions. Currently, you have to scan everyone you see until you find your target. Bounty missions don't pay enough for the time it takes to do that. You do have to turn missions in as well. Transport goods from X to Y, you have to return to X to collect. I imagine that will be changed at some point.

Unless I'm really missing something, the bounty missions could do with something similar to the ones in Frontier and FFE: A bounty which says, target X will be at/leaving location Y at time Z.

Protip: You should watch your temperature. Seriously.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OjQMwlB8ZQ

I now configured my voice attack to have "normal mode" with all systems on. "combat mode" with my weapons out and stuff like cargo scoop and such off and "emergency shutdown" where all systems except lifesupport are turned off.

Serious question from someone who has never followed this game or played the previous ones --

Is this a very accessible game and simple to play? I'm coming from the standpoint that I love space settings (games, movies, etc)... but I do not want to play a super complicated game, particularly with the flight model or whatever.

The graphics look awesome which is a huge plus, because that's very important to me.

But is the game honestly accessible for any random gamer to pick up and play?

You don't have to go back to collect anymore since 1.01 I think.

The controls of the game couldn't be done with a Gamepad only, it uses way to many keys.

Someone associated with the project said 'they'd be stupid' not to bring it to console, so it'll happen. I hope so, personally. Only way I'll check it out. Requirements above my PC specs.

"Is this a very accessible game and simple to play?"

Depends on your definition of accessible and simple to play.

Well I played Privateer and Freelancer back in the day, and really liked those games. But I would not want anything too much more complicated than that?

You'll be fine, the game isn't crazy hardcore sim. It just likes to demand a bit more effort sometimes than you might be used to with all the super streamlined casual experience games.

Ok thanks! The graphics looks freakin sweet, that's why I really want to check it out if it's not too complicated

Question, how do you use the vertical and horizontal thrusters with the T-Flight Hotas X since there is no Hat? I'm just wondering how i'm gonna set it up.

I use the "slider" or whatever you call it on the throttle for horizontal thrust and buttons 5 and 7 for vertical thrust.

I was surprised it shouldn't have a Hat, I bought the T.Flight Stick X today, because the Hotas X was sold out and I was sure, both use the same stick.

Yeah, I was looking for something Low Cost too, my Logitech 3D Extreme is beginning to make problems, the center spring doesn't seem to center the stick 100% anymore.
The stick always leans a little bit to the left, which is annoying, cause the way you can move to the right is much longer, then to the left

A pity, I really liked the stick and it's layout. I find the button Layout of the Thrustmaster stick a little bit uncomfortable, the Logitech Stick had the secondary fire button placed, so that it could be pressed with the right thumb, on the T.Flight X I have to use the index finger, which I find quite uncomfortable.

Bought this last night to try with the DK2, but have zero familiarity with the game. Think I should learn the controls via a traditional display before taking the DK2 plunge or just go for it?

How do I intercept other players in supercruise? Like if I spot an other player who is wanted and wanna bring him down.

When you move in Supercruise you will see Unindentified Objects most of the time around stations, that's other people/npc. If you go near them, because of the mass lock you will be all ejected from supercruise.

I'd say go for traditional display first. Learn basic controls and objectives of the game at least.

If there's anything bad I can say about the DK2, it's that the galaxy map is unusable right now so I don't know which systems take which resources and whatnot,

Not the Unidentified Objects, I mean when I see another player in Supercruise, can I intercept him?

I can help you learn about the more popular low end setups, the crazy $500 high end stuff is way out of my league.

Affordable High End - Saitek X52 - $120 Supposedly the best you can get at a reasonable price. David Braben himself plays the game with this setup.

Lower End - Thrustmaster Hotas X Joystick + Throttle - $45 The cheapest all in one solution, never used it myself but I've seen some sick dogfighters on youtube who use this and have endorsed it with high praise. Probably doesn't compare to the X52 in build quality or responsiveness.

Thrustmaster T.16000m Joystick - $47 - This is the stick that I currently use, highly recommended by the community. It's an extremely responsive stick that will help A LOT with mobility and combat but not much else. The stick itself is great but the button setup on the base is terrible. I find that the best way to use this stick is with one hand on the stick, and the other on the keyboard. This works out perfectly since the flexibility of the keyboard gives you thrust control and complete control of all of ship's systems at any given time.

There's tons of other joysticks out there, but these are the ones that I'm seeing most commonly recommended for new players.

All of these sticks work fine with W 8.1 ?

First time I really paid attention to E:D and I am shocked I haven't been into this game. I love space but it never crossed my mind to look into this. Going to change that.

I've never really used a joystick before, but I think I'm going to go with that Saitek X52. Does it have a steep learning curve for a beginner?

On the performance side --- how is it? Does anybody use multiple GPUs? I'd be playing at 4k. While I know my rig would most likely not have any issues doing so, it would be nice to know ahead of time before putting down $$.

Mine works no problems. I think that it's safe to assume that they work, I've never seen anyone state otherwise.

As far as learning curve, I've never played an Elite game before this one and I was able to get the hang of flying after an hour or 2 on an Xbox 360 controller.

Thanks. I obviously don't have a flight stick right now...so would you recommend going the controller route vs KB+M?

Just bought the beta and going through the setup process now...

Passed 100k credits... I could buy a Viper now but i think i'll go with the Lakon 6, trading is quite addicting actually, and with that i'll make even more money! And then i'll go for a Lakon 9, more and more monies every run :o

Truck simulator in space

So I posted in the other thread. The only negative to the DK2 is that I cannot access the map to see which systems is good for which items to trade with..

Also, I've just hit the 24 mark so I'm guessing for effective trading I should upgrade the Hauler..

That one will be exciting in the DK2. lol Gonna save up a bit more to get some insurance money just in case.

Banned!

Honestly though, Ifeels this kind of space sim, with HOTAS peripherals, pedals, and Oculus Rift really make the experience the way it is. It's be harder to justify a console release once the expansions come in and would probably overhaul the entire game structure.

Controller is probably okay for learning some craft fundamentals, but don't expect to win dogfights with it.

I can access the map fine using the DK2. What happens when you select galactic map on the left Floating screen?

Up to ~ 200 k, which ship should i go for trading after the hauler, so i get a better jump range, Cobra 3 ? Viper ?

I cracked yesterday and bought into the beta.

Holy shit, if there's one game that does the jump to hyperspace (witchspace?) right, it's this one. Jumping into close proximity of the star looks amazing. I really look forward to more sundiving.

Naturally, I bought an X52 this morning so I can use it for both this and Star Citizen, even if I was powersliding into stations after getting used to kbm controls.
