Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

I was powersliding into stations after getting used to kbm controls.

There is nothing cooler than seeing another player who is probably new to the game slowly inch his way towards the station, trying to dock and then you shoot past him at high speed, enter the station and dock before he even passes the hatch. Makes you feel like such a pro pilot, haha.

Stepping up in the world! I love my new transit van ;D

Is there finally something that knocks people out of subspace? Not sure how you manage to be a pirate otherwise.

Nah, there isn't yet, but you can meet other players in the persistent instances like federal distress signals, nav beacons, resource extraction sites, conflict zones.
Of course you'll never see traders there cause they only ever fly from station to station.
So what you need to do is stalk around a station if you want to attack a player ship, but it's not really possible cause they can just speed towards the station.

I was more joking around with my "i'll pirate you". I'm more into pirating NPCs atm :D

It's not elitist. It's fucking true. Nothing that I've played on the PS4 matches my experience of sitting in that cockpit with the Rift on for the first time having stared at that steam vent right in front of your ship for 15 min.

I stared at that vent for 15 goddamn minutes. Yeah, they did something right.

You guys are pretty much making me cry with you vr talk. :D

How do you add people to friends list anyway? Commander Quin is my handle, I'll be busy shooting past stations because you can't do the instant deceleration trick from FFE in this one.

In the main menu is a "friends and groups" button.
Click it and in the friend list just search for commander names from our list in this thread and then add people bit by bit or accept people trying to add you

Got to admit I can't help but be amazed by how empty this world is. I really want to love it since there nothing cooler than space, but I dunno what I expected from this game. I think I expected epic space battles and the like due to the trailers but the universe doesn't seem to support it. On top of that my whole 3 days spent with the beta has consisted doing jumps 6-7 times in a row the supercruising to a space station for 10 minutes. Sell some goods, buy some goods and maybe carry some cargo for extra cash, but what else is there?

Just curious if any of the fans here with previous experience (I'm new to space sims) could tell me a bit more about the draw of Elite. I feel like there's something I'm missing as outside of visiting interesting real life locations such as Eta Carinae I can't see anything to do but get richer by trading.

remember that this is a beta and there is barely any content in the game yet. There are like, two systems that have conflict zones and federal distress beacons in them.

All the background simulation stuff like wars and so on are not in. They only just added a few NPCs actually flying around stations and so on. Frontier is really big on releasing very barebones systems to test their underlying tech and then working on it internally before releasing a big update for it.

So basically what you are seeing right now is the game being super barebones. Hell, the supercruise alone has like 10% of what they planned for it in it.

Go to Eranin or Dahan and go to a federal distress signal if you want to see a big fight around a federal dreadnaught or go to conflict zones for constant fighting.

Just got done setting up and playing with my DK2 and x52 pro, this game is pretty cool. Way better once you go online. I had just been playing that chemical waste destruction mission and thought it was kinda lame. This will be insane with better rift hardware

Oh ok! I think I may have just been a little puzzled by the testing stage then. I guess since I'm pretty new to early access, kickstarter and the like that I figured the game was very close to feature complete being a beta. Good to hear that there's still a lot to come, especially with supercruise as honestly, I find it tedious currently.

I really do enjoy exploring however. I had a lot of fun accidentally stumbling across a brown dwarf in the I-Bootis system, so I guess for now I should probably just stick with stopping off for the odd dogfight whilst seeing what lies out there.

Oh that gives me an idea for the OT:

Elite: Dangerous |OT| - it's like ETS2 but in a spaceship and in Space

Really loving this now I've got the Thrustmaster X Hotas stick, the difference it makes is unbelievable ( I'm now able to dock in 30seconds as opposed to 5 minutes with the xbox controller! ).
Still haven't managed to save enough cash for a new ship but i have 11,000 credits so it's happening slowly but surely.
Can i add my name to the commander list?

Commander Kymbo :)

Another HOTAS X user, welcome buddy :D

Finally saved up enough for a Viper. Now to save up for some class 4 weapons. Is there anywhere that details what the weapons do? Like are beam weapons better for stripping shields and chainguns better for hulls? The official wiki is pretty sparse atm.

Standard mapping for the X52 Pro:

I'm really pleased at how the Saitek x52 Pro is natively supported, out of the box. Plug it in and elite immediately recognizes it and provides a complete button mapping by name. Even looking at the stick in-game, it appears to be modeled after the x52 Pro. I would say if anybody is looking for a no-fuss HOTAS, the x52 Pro really fits the bill.

If you have Saitek rudders, it'll detect that too and move yaw from the rotation of the stick to your rudders as well.
Dammit, now I have to buy one of these too.. lol.

That's some Rendezvous with Rama stuff right there.

Methinks I need this game. Especially with a Rift on the way.

So TEST (Reddit Group) and the Elite forums members are declaring open season on anyone who has a CMDR Backer ####### name so I suggest you guys change up those names quick.

Jesus, I'm soooo bad at dogfighting, half an hour trying to put down the barstard in the third scenario and I almost got him until he got me in the last second, I was screaming at the screen. Loved it, and that was just a scenario with a simple combat, lol.

BTW, I'm having a problem with resolution, for some reason it won't allow me to put at 1360x768, is there some ini or command where I can force it?

The missions don't factor in the weight of the cargo. With an empty ship you may be able to make the jump, with however much cargo you took on you may not.

Yep, this just caught me out. I've now got 7 tonnes of leather onboard (yes, leather) - that was supplied upon acceptance of a mission - that are now weighing me down to the extent that I can't make the jumps necessary to deliver it all!

Yeah it's a pain.

I suppose in the future you can check the galaxy map before accepting a haul like that and adjust the mass slider to compensate for the amount of cargo you're taking on to see if you can reach the destination or not.

The latest patch should have actually made it so that the weight of the cargo is calculated into the range the mission shows

Went ahead and ordered the Thrustmaster Hotas X-Flight stick that was recommended her. Was going to go wiuth the Saitek X52, but thought I should start with the Hotas and if I like the game enough upgrade to the X52. Should have it on Monday. I'll probably hold off on trying the game until I get it.

Hey guys,

Really amazing to read the positive comments about this game, and that you guys are enjoying it so much with or without dk2 just thought I'd just say its great to read and helps keeps us motivated.

Hey thats cool, frontier on GAF. I must say, you guys made one of the most inspiring videogame i've ever played. The network at my job must find it suspicious the number of page refreshes i've done when we were approaching the beta release ;)

I bought the game based off those positive comments too haha I've been hearing constantly that Elite Dangerous with the Oculus Rift is one of the best experiences they've had in gaming so that's quite something
